Philip Hoare is an award-winning writer whose books often describe the lure of the sea, the strange and beautiful creatures that live in it and the inspiration artists have found in its murky depths. His book Leviathan won the Samuel Johnson Prize: it drew on his lifelong obsession with whales, which began with the gigantic skeletons in the Natural History Museum and continued with his own encounters with them at sea. His most recent book, William Blake and the Sea Monsters of Love, traces Blake's enduring influence on numerous poets, writers, film-makers and musicians. He's also written about Noel Coward, the British socialite Stephen Tennant and the Netley Military Hospital on Spike Island, near Southampton. His musical choices including Prokofiev, Britten and Copland. Producer Clare Walker

In this episode of the Shakespeare and Company Interview Podcast, Adam Biles welcomes Philip Hoare to the bookstore for a mesmerizing conversation about Hoare's latest book, William Blake and the Sea Monsters of Love. With characteristic lyricism, Hoare explores the mystic intersections between Blake's visionary art and poetry and the siren call of the ocean. The discussion flows through queer longing, mythic imagery, and the enduring pull of nature and art. A haunting, moving, and often playful exchange—as unruly and evocative as the sea itself.Buy William Blake and the Sea Monsters of Love: https://www.shakespeareandcompany.com/books/the-moon-is-a-watery-star*Philip Hoare is the author of ten works of non-fiction. The Ghost Furnace - Episode 117 "The Morgawr" This week we head back across the pond for another Cornish legend which had been sighted many times over the last 100+ years, but never decidedly identified. With so much of the ocean inaccessible by conventional means, it lends itself to stories. When you have an area where so many residents live near, work on, and love the water, it is natural that stories of unknowable beasts come to the surface. Is the Morgawr a single creature, a relic population of marine reptiles or something yet more strange? Parental discretion is strongly advised.IN THIS EPISODE: The Bermuda Triangle, also called the Devil's Triangle, is a famous part of the ocean where many ships and planes have mysteriously disappeared. Located between Bermuda, Puerto Rico, and the tip of Florida, this area has puzzled people for over 100 years. From the spooky disappearance of the USS Cyclops with 306 crew members in 1918 to the more recent sinking of the SS El Faro in 2015, the Bermuda Triangle becomes more mysterious year after year. Tonight we'll look at some of the strangest events in the Triangle, like Flight 19, which vanished during a routine training mission; and the Witchcraft, a boat that disappeared just minutes after calling for help. We'll look at other locations around the world similar to the Bermuda Triangle that don't get the same recognition – but are just as mysterious. And while we're in the water, we'll touch on a few ocean ghost stories, and reports of sea monsters. So before we get started, if you tend to get sea sick, you might want to grab your Dramamine.CHAPTERS & TIME STAMPS (All Times Approximate and Only Accurate For the Commercial Version)…00:00:00.000 = Lead-In00:01:21.662 = Show Open00:02:05.707 = Bermuda Triangle: A History of Mystery00:10:13.632 = Vile Vortices Around the World00:20:43.194 = Monsters Beneath The Waves00:38:49.705 = Ocean Ghost Storeis00:48:08.720 = Show CloseSOURCES AND RESOURCES FROM THE EPISODE…Bermuda Triangle sources: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/6sw5aj4j, https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/3mf3vvw6Vile Vortices source: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/2p8fhp3bOcean Ghost Stories source: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/rmhs277yMonsters Beneath The Waves source: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/596estzu=====(Over time links seen above may become invalid, disappear, or have different content. Do you ever scroll through social media and wonder why everyone else's life seems perfect while yours feels like a constant struggle? C - Monster dives deep into this modern phenomenon, exposing the carefully crafted illusions that dominate our digital landscape and impact our self-worth.With raw honesty and zero filter, this episode challenges our cultural obsession with influencers and celebrities who we elevate to hero status despite knowing nothing about their true character. "Idolize the person that gets up every freaking morning to go to work, to put food on the table and a roof over your head," Sea Monster urges, encouraging listeners to redirect their admiration toward those who genuinely impact their lives—parents, teachers, coaches, and mentors who provide authentic guidance and support. The conversation takes a revealing look at gym culture, where people film elaborate workouts while barely breaking a sweat, and contrasts it with genuine grinders who are "too busy grinding" to document their journey. Sea Monster delivers the powerful truth that "a good person, a real person, actually works harder and better and does the right thing when nobody is looking." This becomes the episode's core message: character is defined not by what you showcase online but by who you are when there's no external validation at stake.Whether you're struggling with social media addiction or simply feeling lost in a world of digital smoke and mirrors, this episode offers a refreshing reality check and a path toward authentic living. Subscribe to Can't Be Broken for more unfiltered conversations that challenge conventional thinking and inspire genuine growth beyond the constraints of social expectations.

My guest on the show today is novelist and TV writer Ben H. Winters. I first encountered Ben as the author of the wonder and wonderfully sad Last Policeman trilogy of science fiction novels, which are about a small town cop who keeps investigating and solving crimes even as a planet-destroying asteroid continues on its deadly trajectory toward Earth. I hadn't thought of him in about a decade, since I finished the books, when I came across his name again in a surprising place, as one of the co-creators of the CBS show Tracker, the first season of which I'd just binged. I don't usually go deep into the cast and crew of shows like Tracker, which is a fun but fairly generic CBS action series, but I'd been surprised to see that the show had been the single most popular scripted drama of the year. I was curious whether there was something in the zeitgeist it was capturing that I simply hadn't perceived. So I started researching the creators, and there Ben was. The more I read about him, the more fascinated I became. In addition to The Last Policeman novels, he's also the author of Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters, which was the second in the “Quirk Classics” series, after Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. He also wrote the third volume in that series, Android Karenina. Other science fiction and thriller titles include Underground Airlines, Golden State, The Quiet Boy, and this year's Big Time. As a TV writer, in addition to Tracker, he's also worked on Legion, the trippy Marvel series, and Manhunt, about the search for John Wilkes Booth after he assassinated Lincoln.Ben and I end up talking a lot about how to make a career as a writer, the unpredictabilities of the entertainment industry, and the ways in which Tracker blends conservative and liberal sensibilities. Show Notes Episode 471: Danger Zone Part 2-The Day After WTH Movie Night: The Day After This week Host Dave Bledsoe hit the bottle because he was terrified by the memories of something he saw on television as a kid. (Sigmund and Sea Monsters, Sid and Marty Kroft were FREAKY!) On the show this week it is a WTH Movie Night, we talk about the movie that scared the shit of Generation X: 1983's The Day After. Along the way we learn that someone was stupid enough to trust Dave enough to give him access to nuclear weapons. (He still has a plutonium core in his closet!) Then we dive right into the backstory of how ABC made a movie so scary an entire generation still freaks out when they think of it. (The same could be said of Jaws) We examine what it took to get the movie made in an era when television was more Love Boat than Masterpiece Theater. We talk about how the urban legend that says Ronald Reagan changed his nuclear policy because of this movie (Nope!) and the guy who REALLY thawed out the Cold War, Mikhail Gorbachev! It worked out really well for two angry ladies to be reading about a dragon shifter instead of a human man. This week, we read The Dragon of New Orleans by Genevieve Jack and we're so glad. Gabriel is an immortal dragon, but a witch placed a curse on him. He doesn't have long before his time runs out–he'll either turn to stone or he'll have to return to his homeland, where he's surely to be killed on sight. He believes that Raven is the key to breaking the curse. Except that she's in hospice, dying from a brain tumor. Good thing he can save her life…so that maybe she can save his. Also Discussed: Taylor Swift New Orleans Night 2, the shitshow of a week we've had, and why we choose the books we do. Up Next: Under Loch and Key by Lana Ferguson SOS Novella: Melt for Daddy by Holly Wilde What We're Reading: Swearing at a Sea Monster by Lauren Connolly Things We Never Got Over by Lucy Score Tales Beneath the Winter Sky (Anthology) by The Distracted Inklings (Lady Kilroy, Amber Thoma, Amber Paige, Veronica Wynne, Roxie Cohen, Rebekah Sinclair) (11/15) What We're Listening To: MaXXXine Booze, Boobs, and Blood How Did This Get Made? The most unexplored areas of the earth are its vast waterways. Humans can't breath underwater and thus our explorations of the seas are very limited. We often wonder if stories about mysterious and sometimes ferocious sea creatures are inspired by our imaginings of what could be below the surface of the water or if they are based on true experiences. When deep sea explorations do manage to send back pictures, some very unique and weird creatures are revealed. They help to make some of the legends we have heard about monsters in the water, more believable. On this episode, we are going to explore the myths and legends and possible true stories of sea monsters. The Moment in Oddity features the Cornell Pumpkin and This Month in History features Dizzy Gillespie. Welcome to Day 2461 of Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom – Theology Thursday – Slaying the Sea Monster – I Dare You Not To Bore Me With The Bible. Wisdom-Trek Podcast Script - Day 2461 Welcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! I am Guthrie Chamberlain, and we are on Day 2461 of our Trek. The Purpose of Wisdom-Trek is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, and to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Today is the twenty-second lesson in our segment, Theology Thursday. Utilizing excerpts from a book titled: I Dare You Not To Bore Me With The Bible written by Hebrew Bible scholar and professor the late Dr. Michael S Heiser, we will invest a couple of years going through the entire Bible, exploring short Biblical lessons that you may not have received in Bible classes or Church. The Bible is a wonderful book. Its pages reveal the epic story of God's redemption of humankind and the long, bitter conflict against evil. Yet it's also a book that seems strange to us. While God's Word was written for us, it wasn't written to us. Today, our lesson is: Slaying the Sea Monster! Slaying the Sea Monster When we think of creation, we think of everything beginning with God's spoken word—as Genesis 1 tells us. But some Old Testament writers concentrate on another aspect of creation—and a weird one at that. In Psalm 74, in the middle of God's ordering of the sea and dry land, His establishing of the sun, moon, stars, and the seasons, we find another event: God destroying sea monsters. 12 You, O God, are my king from ages past, bringing salvation to the earth. 13 You split the sea by your strength and smashed the heads of the sea monsters. 14 You crushed the heads of Leviathan[a] and let the desert animals eat him. 15 You caused the springs and streams to gush forth, and you dried up rivers that never run dry. 16 Both day and night belong to you; you made the starlight[b] and the sun. 17 You set the boundaries of the earth, and you made both summer and winter. (Psa 74:12-17). Warring the Sea Monster The reference to God breaking “the heads of the sea monster” and crushing “the heads of Leviathan” has led many on a desperate study of Old Testament zoology. But this, along with many other confusing Old Testament images, has a cultural context. In the ancient world, the original (“primordial”) chaotic conditions of creation were often portrayed as a monstrous dragon. This is reflected in stories from ancient Babylon and Israel's closest neighbor, Ugarit (ancient Syria, just north of Israel). In the literature of ancient Ugarit, the god Baal battles Yamm, who is portrayed as a chaotic, churning sea, and a terrifying sea dragon named Tannun or Litanu. These terms are equivalent to the Hebrew words in...
