Pulitzer-winner Caroline Fraser maps the lives and crimes of Ted Bundy and his infamous peers—the Green River Killer, the I-5 Killer, the Night Stalker, the Hillside Strangler, and even Charles Manson—and explores an intriguing hypothesis: might environmental factors have played a role in the rise of serial killers in the 1970s and '80s? Caroline Fraser is the author of Prairie Fires: The American Dreams of Laura Ingalls Wilder, which won the Pulitzer Prize. She is also the author of God's Perfect Child: Living and Dying in the Christian Science Church, and her writing has appeared in The New York Review of Books, The New Yorker, The Atlantic, Los Angeles Times, and London Review of Books, among other publications. Her new book is Murderland: Crime and Bloodlust in the Time of Serial Killers.
In this episode, Mikey offers a talk on Angulimala, the serial killer who became a Buddhist monk. This story reveals the profound potential for transformation through the dharma. Support our Halloween “Overcoming the Darkness” campaign to help people with depression: https://weirddarkness.com/HOPEOn March 19, 1919, the entire city of New Orleans threw a massive jazz party to appease a serial killer who promised to spare anyone playing jazz music in their homes that night – or face the blade of his axe.IN THIS EPISODE: The axe murders of New Orleans took place over a hundred years ago, but “The Jazzman Story” remains one of the greatest mysteries and unsolved murder cases within the annals of American crime. (The Axeman's Jazz) *** The investigation of an apparent suicide in 1953 led to an unbelievable theory… not only had the victim used LSD years earlier, but it was quite possible it was forced upon him by the Central Intelligence Agency. (The CIA and LSD) *** You don't often hear of people being struck and killed by lightning – at least not nowadays. But pick up a paper from the early 1900s and you'd think people were doing it as a hobby. (Death By Electrical Storm) *** January 30th, 1835 was the date of the first attempt at assassinating a sitting U.S. President – Andrew Jackson. That fact itself doesn't warrant placement in Weird Darkness, seeing as the attempt failed – but the story leading up to the attempt, and the attempt itself, certainly earn their place in this episode. (The President and the Madman) *** I'll end the episode in the Chamber of Comments, but before that, my last story will the most disturbing one of the episode. Most ghosts are seemingly passive or even benevolent, appearing to scare people only by accident, never by intent. But then there are the stories of violent and angry ghosts – spirits that not only bring terror, but also bloodshed and even death by their own ghostly hands. We'll look at some famous cases of violent hauntings throughout history.CHAPTERS & TIME STAMPS (All Times Approximate)…00:00:00.000 = Show Open00:02:39.659 = The Axeman's Jazz00:22:15.246 = ***CIA and LSD00:29:01.021 = Death By Electrical Storm00:34:15.324 = The President And The Madman00:41:20.641 = ***Vicious And Violent Hauntings01:02:01.000 = Show Close*** = Begins immediately after inserted ad breakSOURCES and RESOURCES:BOOK: “A Terrible Mistake: The Murder of Frank Olson and the CIA's Secret Cold War Experiments” by H.P. On April 5, 1990, someone attacked and murdered 28-year-old Genevieve "Jenny" Zitricki in her Greenville, South Carolina apartment. The Greenville Police Department worked the case for years. We interviewed Lieutenant Tim Conroy about his experience investigating this disturbing case, the surprising clue that tied the murder to crimes in Missouri and Memphis, Tennessee, and the years-long effort to identify the culprit: serial killer Robert Eugene Brashers. We also spoke about the recent news linking these cases to the Austin yogurt shop murders.Check out our upcoming book events and get links to buy tickets here: https://murdersheetpodcast.com/eventsOrder our book on Delphi here: https://bookshop.org/p/books/shadow-of-the-bridge-the-delphi-murders-and-the-dark-side-of-the-american-heartland-aine-cain/21866881?ean=9781639369232Or here: https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Shadow-of-the-Bridge/Aine-Cain/9781639369232Or here: https://www.amazon.com/Shadow-Bridge-Murders-American-Heartland/dp/1639369236Join our Patreon here! https://www.patreon.com/c/murdersheetSupport The Murder Sheet by buying a t-shirt here: https://www.murdersheetshop.com/Check out more inclusive sizing and t-shirt and merchandising options here: https://themurdersheet.dashery.com/Send tips to murdersheet@gmail.com.The Murder Sheet is a production of Mystery Sheet LLC.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Why Our CULTURAL OBSESSION with Serial Killers is OUT of Control! Some names aren't just names... they're warnings. They're whispers of what humanity is capable of at its absolute worst. We're drawn to these stories, not because we admire the men in them, but because we can't look away. It's a morbid curiosity that pulls us in, a need to understand the minds of monsters who look just like us. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. On murmure, on attend.

A short review, because I just watched Netflix's "My Father, the BTK Killer" and I need to talk about it.This isn't another documentary glorifying a serial killer. This is Kerri Rawson's story. She's the daughter of Dennis Rader, the BTK killer who murdered 10 people over nearly two decades while pretending to be a normal dad.Imagine finding out your Boy Scout leader father, who danced with you to John Denver and took you on family vacations, is one of America's most notorious serial killers. That's Kerri's reality. And 20 years later, she's still processing it.This show hit...differently. Because it's not about him. It's about the wreckage he left behind. The family trying to make sense of the senseless. For over a decade, Israel Keyes moved silently across America, flying into random cities, renting cars with cash, and driving thousands of miles just to kill. He buried “kill kits” years in advance packed with guns, rope, zip ties, and Drano, waiting for the perfect moment to dig them up. By the time he was caught in 2012, Keyes had murdered a young barista in Alaska, abducted and killed a couple in Vermont, robbed banks to fund his crimes, and hinted at at least eleven victims scattered across the country. He was meticulous, patient, and terrifyingly ordinary, an unassuming father and contractor who built his life around murder and believed no one would ever catch him.
