There's a moment—maybe you've lived it—when the email goes unanswered, the dishwasher remains unloaded, the phone rings but your hand doesn't move. You're not tired. You're not lazy. You're just… stuck. We call it overwhelm. But what if that word is too small? What if what you're feeling is your brain's way of saying, This system is not working for me?In this episode of our Duos series, we bring together two people who have spent their careers listening to the quiet, misunderstood signals of ADHD: Dr. Tamara Rosier, author of Your Brain's Not Broken and You, Me, and Our ADHD Family, and Brooke Schnittman, author of Activate Your ADHD Potential.Tamara talks about emotional flooding—those tidal waves of feeling that hit before a single task is done. Brooke explains how to pause just long enough to choose a different direction. Together, they unpack why ADHD-related overwhelm isn't a sign of failure, but a clue. A trailhead. A door.Because maybe, just maybe, the problem isn't that your brain is broken. Maybe it's that the world was built for a different kind of mind. Maybe the first step isn't pushing through. It's listening.

This week on the show, Nikki and Pete dive into the unique challenges of navigating the emotional rollercoaster of ADHD with guest Brooke Schnittman. Brooke, an ADHD coach with a background in education, is expert in the concepts of overwhelm and underwhelm, two extremes that often go hand-in-hand for those with ADHD. She explains that underwhelm, or boredom, can result from burnout after periods of overwhelm or a lack of interest and connection to a task. She emphasizes the importance of understanding the "why" behind tasks and breaking them down into small, manageable steps to build momentum and motivation.Pete and Brooke also discuss the role of executive function deficits in preventing individuals with ADHD from recognizing and addressing their basic needs, such as hydration, sleep, and self-care. Brooke highlights Dr. Thomas Brown's six executive function clusters and how deficits in these areas can contribute to both overwhelm and underwhelm.Throughout the episode, Brooke offers insights and strategies for managing these emotional extremes, such as preparing for potential setbacks, attaching oneself to small actions to regain momentum, and practicing self-compassion. The hosts and guest explore the overlapping triggers for both overwhelm and underwhelm, emphasizing the importance of self-awareness and developing coping mechanisms to navigate the challenges of ADHD.Links & NotesDr. Thomas Brown's model of the six executive function clustersActivate Your ADHD Potential by Brooke SchnittmanDig into the podcast Shownotes Database (00:00) - Welcome to Taking Control: The ADHD Podcast (00:54) - Support the Show • Become a Member! This week on Great Minds: People & Culture we're pleased to welcome Brooke Schnittman, MA, BCC, PCC, an esteemed expert in the field of ADHD management and support, renowned for her unwavering dedication to empowering individuals with ADHD to overcome challenges and achieve their full potential.
Brooke Schnittman worked closely with ADHDers for years providing disability supports, not realizing she had ADHD herself until she moved to virtual coaching and was suddenly unable to focus and stay on top of administrative tasks like she was before. Getting a diagnosis gave Brooke the tools and understanding to take her services and self-care to the next level. Through her company, Coaching with Brooke, she and her eight coaches help ADHDers transform their chaos and frustration into focused success through executive functioning skills. She also wrote a book, Activate Your ADHD Potential, in which she provides strategies for conquering the cycle of underwhelm and overwhelm that so often keeps ADHDers stuck. Brooke's book is transformative because she breaks the work down into 12 easy-to-follow steps, from gaining control of the chaos of your brain to organizing your schedule in a way that works for you. With the help of guided worksheets, Brooke's book will give you strategies for success that are strengths-focused and achievable, and I'm so excited to share her insights with you this episode. On episode 211, Emily Kircher-Morris talks with Brooke Schnittman, founder of Coaching with Brooke and author of Activate Your ADHD Potential. They discuss the barriers faced by ADHDers, the strengths of ADHD brains, the influence of the neurodiversity framework, the shift in our understanding of ADHD, the importance of structure and systems, her favorite tool for getting thoughts out of the head, and more. It's a great conversation with plenty of usable advice and ideas. Key takeaways: ADHDers often face barriers in trying to fit into societal expectations and meet the demands of teachers and employers. ADHD brains have strengths such as creativity, problem-solving, and intuition that should be explored and harnessed. The neurodiversity framework has influenced the understanding and approach to ADHD, emphasizing the need for structure and support tailored to individual strengths and learning styles. Getting thoughts out of the head and onto paper or through external processing can help with organization and reduce overwhelm. A message to a younger self with ADHD would be that it's going to be okay and that with the right tools and support, control can be gained over ADHD symptoms. She discusses her earlier experience with a diagnosis of generalized anxiety disorder and how she dealt with bullying through her ADHD diagnosis, by way of her auditory processing disorder.
