For most people, caffeine is their first drug of choice, and a very legal one used in everything from energy drinks and coffee to products you wouldn't expect (think protein bars and over-the-counter pain relievers). That over-reliance on caffeine to provide a daily boost in energy and alertness often comes at a high cost, especially if you're addicted to it (which many people are) or metabolize it very slowly (as a majority of people do).So, if you could find a substitute to caffeine that provides some of the same benefits but without the health problems, would you try it?Paul shares his very positive experiences trading his morning espresso with butter for UPDATE, an energy drink formulated with the far gentler paraxanthine, with its formulators Daniel Solomons and Shawn Wells this week on Spirit Gym.Connect with Daniel and Shawn and the UPDATE community at their website and on social media via Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter/X, TikTok and Instagram. It's not a human being, but it's playing this role of orchestrating a lot of our experience and people's development. And so creating an optimal AI or an optimal environment would be trying to foster optimal agency, optimal meaning, which is really optimal wellbeing as well.” - Mahon McCann [00:38:23] “I think part of steeling the culture is to get the people within the AI industry [to] drop the sorcerer myth. As we head into the holidays Aniesa wanted to explore stress and what is referred to as allostasis. She explores the concept of the allostatic load and the impact this has on the body in both the short term and long term. Aniesa also discusses the role things like sleep and trauma can play in how we manage and cope with stress. Importantly, Aniesa talks about how we can all learn to manage our stress levels and take ownership of minimising the impact as much as possible. KEY TAKEAWAYS Allostasis is the process of trying to achieve stability through physiological or behavioural change. This is usually in response to stress. Your allostatic load is your chronic exposure to fluctuating and increased stress levels. Stress produces a spike in adrenaline and after this initial spike, the body and you relax. But this cycle of high and low adrenaline has an impact on your body. There is an elevated risk of chronic disease and mental health disorders from those who have long-term elevated stress levels. There is a very strong connection between your allostatic load and things such as your class, finances, living situation and perceived discrimination. Sleep, exercise and a balanced diet are simple but can help your body manage stress. If we can take ownership of managing our stress and learn what works for us as individuals to manage stress then we can lessen the impact it has on us. BEST MOMENTS "It's self-regulating so we're trying to keep this constant state while we are under stress” “This constant continued strain is really going to compromise your immune function” “That's going to affect your overall lifespan, your cognitive function and your well-being” “There's a real strong association between your allostatic load and your social demographic characteristics” “We need to be proactive in managing our stress, we need to stay informed” CONTACT METHODwww.instagram.com/aniesabblore/           www.instagram.com/sensationalkidstherapyuk/    www.facebook.com/sensationalkidslondon ABOUT THE HOST Aniesa completed her degree in Occupational Therapy at the University of Stellenbosch, in South Africa. She has since been focusing on pediatrics and sensory processing and integration. She has worked across a range of pediatric fields and has extensive experience in autism, specific learning difficulties, as well as anxiety and emotional regulation. Aniesa has one teenage son with autism, and one with sensory difficulties. She herself was diagnosed at a late age as having ADHD and has found that understanding her neurodivergence has led to a greater connection with children and their parents.

In this episode, my guest is Dr. Lisa Feldman Barrett, Ph.D., a Distinguished Professor of Psychology at Northeastern University who is a world expert in the science of emotions. She explains what emotions are and how the brain represents and integrates signals from our body and the environment around us to create our unique emotional states. We discuss the relationship between emotions and language, how our specificity of language impacts our emotional processing, the role of facial expressions in emotions, and how emotions relate to sleep, movement, nutrition and the building and reinforcement of social bonds. We also discuss actionable tools for how to regulate feelings of uncertainty and tools to better understand the emotional states of others. This episode ought to be of interest to anyone curious about the neuroscience and psychology underlying emotions and for those who seek to better understand themselves and relate to others and the world in richer, more adaptive ways. I discuss whether willpower is a limited resource, the controversial “ego depletion” theory of willpower and the role that beliefs play in determining our tenacity and willpower. Then, I discuss the neural basis of willpower in the brain and body and how tenacity and willpower relate to sleep, stress, focus, and possibly lifespan. Then, I provide a series of science-supported tools and protocols to increase your level of tenacity and willpower. We need to develop the skills that are thought to be just in the zone of genius and make them commonplace. Dr. Erik Kormen (@ErikKorem) shares his expertise on high-performance technology and innovative thinking to reach maximum human potential. He shares how to unlock the power of tracking your fitness and recovery through his revolutionary fitness tracker, AIM7.  “Stress is really not the enemy. It's the gateway to growth.” - Erik Korem   Key Takeaways: Coaching: A good coach helps somebody unlock their potential or pull a roadblock out of the way. They identify what their client/athlete's strengths and weaknesses are. Coaches and teachers, mentors, advisors, and co-creators. A coaching relationship is a two-way street. The coach helps clients create a better possible future. In the process, both the athlete/client elevate the realm of possibilities and potential of life and the goals set. Adaptive Capacity: People who are the best in the world at what they do can adapt to tremendous levels of psycho-physiological stress. Part of it is genetic, and part of it is developed. So, just like any capability, people are wired with specific innate abilities, and they can constantly improve them. When someone exceeds their capacity to adapt to acute or chronic stress, they get injured, burn out, and develop physical and mental health issues. Adaptive capacity is training your stress responders so that your gas tank(resolve) is higher/bigger. This allows you to do more with less cost. Building this capacity involves five basic things: sleep, exercise, mental fitness, nutrition, and healthy relationships. Allostasis for Adaptation: When your body tries to achieve stability through change. Allostatic load is the cost that is incurred whenever you experience a stressor. Your adaptive capacity gets bigger if you can build more capacity for more allostatic load. When that happens, what once was incredibly taxing is now your baseline. There is a limit to this, but most people have yet to get close to their absolute capacity. This is, again, psycho-physical. It's both the capacity of mental processing as well as physiological processing.   Sponsors and Promotions: Life Force: Start your membership today and save 40% using code DIVINE40.  https://www.mylifeforce.com/divine   Vessi: Get the extraordinary sneakers that could redefine your daily commute and weekend adventures.  Get 15% off your order and save by using code DIVINE https://www.vessi.com/DIVINE   Lectric eBikes: Shift into a new way of getting out there with a Lectric eBike. This week on the podcast Mikki speaks to Dr Peter Sterling about the allostatic stress load and its impact on health. The term “allostasis” has been coined to clarify ambiguities associated with the word “stress.” Allostasis refers to the adaptive processes that maintain homeostasis through the production of mediators such as adrenalin, cortisol and other chemical messengers. They discuss how Peter integrated his interests in neuroanatomy, physiology psychology and human behaviour/social issues etc. that then informed his career and the development of the stress model that considered social injustices. We also discuss how his informal anthropological research taught him about the stress response, and the pillars of health that he then wrote about. Dr Sterling's book https://www.amazon.com.au/What-Health-Allostasis-Evolution-Design/dp/0262043300Research https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=Xrgtce0AAAAJ&hl=en Contact Mikki:https://mikkiwilliden.com/https://www.facebook.com/mikkiwillidennutritionhttps://www.instagram.com/mikkiwilliden/https://linktr.ee/mikkiwillidenSave 20% on all NuZest Products WORLDWIDE with the code MIKKI at www.nuzest.co.nz, www.nuzest.com.au or www.nuzest.comCurranz supplement: MIKKI saves you 25% at www.curranz.co.nz or www.curranz.co.uk ooff your first order

Full show notes at www.LearningLeader.com Twitter/IG: @RyanHawk12   https://twitter.com/RyanHawk12 How to respond instead of react… The 4 P's: Pause Process Plan Proceed — Using the 4 Ps will increase your chances of responding better than reacting quickly Non-Dual thinking. It's not this OR that. It's this AND that. It's not self-discipline or self-compassion. It can be both. As we learn more, we become more reasonable. The world is not black and white. We can live in the gray and embrace it. Brad's core values: Life is the doing of his life (activities, health, workouts, showing up) Love is the being of his life (family, being there for the most important people) A new model for navigating change and disorder – A neuroscientist and a biologist coined the phrase allostasis. Allostasis comes from the Greek allo, which means “variable,” and stasis, which means “standing.” Allostasis is defined as “Stability through change.” When Brad went to the University of Michigan, he couldn't go to football games. “It felt pointless to be in the stands instead of on the field, too close to something the loss of which I was still grieving.” Science shows that when you fight change, your body releases the stress hormone cortisol. Hard Times are always hard – But with practice, they get easier… In a multi-year study of more than 2,000 adults aged 18 to 101 published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, University of Buffalo psychologist, Mark Seery and colleagues found that people who had experienced medium levels of adversity were both higher-functioning and more satisfied with their lives than those who had experienced extremely high levels of adversity as well as those who had experienced hardly any adversity at all… Five Questions for Embracing Change: Where in your life are you pursuing fixity where it might be beneficial to open yourself to the possibility, or in some cases, the inevitability of change? In what parts of your life are you holding on to unrealistic expectations? Are there elements of your identity to which you cling too tightly? How might you use your core values– the rugged and flexible boundaries of your identity– to help you navigate the challenges of your life? In what circumstances do you tend to react when you would benefit from responding, and what conditions predispose you to that? 10 Tools for Developing Rugged Flexibility: Embrace non-dual thinking Adopt a being orientation Frequently update your expectations to match reality Practice tragic optimism, commit to wise hop, and take wise action Actively differentiate and integrate your sense of self View the world with independent and interdependent lenses Respond to change with the 4 Ps Lean on routines (and rituals) to provide stabiliy during periods of disorder Use behavioral activation Don't force meaning and growth; let them come on their own time True confidence comes from evidence, and it allows you to OWN YOUR SEAT. Owning your seat does not mean certainty, nor does it mean a complete lack of doubts. It means taking your doubts with you and stepping into the arena no less—because you've done the work. Easy: showing up when you are at your best and everything is clicking. Hard: showing up when you are in a hole and the current is going against you. Most everyone can do the former. But it's the latter that has a huge impact on lasting progress, fulfillment, and success. Progress is nonlinear. Keep pounding the stone. Some days nothing happens. Some days it cracks a little bit more. Occasionally, it splits wide open. The implication of this truth is both simple and significant: If you're addicted to visible progress, then sooner or later, you'll burn out of whatever you're pursuing. This is a big reason so many people quit after the honeymoon phase of trying something new. Brad's 3 non-negotiable daily practices for physical and mental well-being: 1. Forty-five to ninety minutes of physical activity. 2. At least one deep-focus block of sixty to ninety minutes on good, meaningful work. 3. Do not fight evening sleepiness, which usually means bed by 10PM. Don't define yourself by what you have. Define yourself by who you are. On developing a BEING over HAVING orientation, and the strength and freedom that comes with it.

Today Oliver Crossley (Yogic Physio) and I discussed allostasis as a model to better understand and treat pain.  Allostasis potentially helps us to better understand how apparently disparate things like psychological stress and social pressure can place a cumulative load on our bodies and ultimately combine with other stressors to produce or enhance pain, using principles more in line with a more recent understanding of pain such as neuro-immune-endocrine factors that can lead to nociception.    Oliver included some great examples along the way to better illustrate and explain the model and also included some great tips and takeaways about how he uses allostasis to help people with persistent pain.    Outline What is Allostasis? What is the Allostasis model and how can it help us to explain or understand pain? What are the possible mechanisms of allostatic load and pain? Stress can produce a paradoxical response within the immune response within the immune and nociceptive systems.  Acute stress - analgesia Chronic stress more variable and can produce stress-induced hyperalgesia Top down of central governance of stress response Brain determines what a person perceives as threatening or stressful in a particular context, influenced by past experiences and beliefs. For example muscular strain during lifting could be perceived as threatening or non-threatening depending on the person's expectations and previous experiences.  If person has negative beliefs - your inhibitory responses may be lost and you experience a stress response in the absence of tissue trauma.  Multiple dimensions possibly contributing to, and interacting in pain presentations: Central and peripheral nociceptive processes Movement Psychology  Social  Genetic + Epigenetic factors  Health + lifestyle Oliver Crossley  https://www.yogicphysio.com/

The key to high performance is building adaptive capacity, or the ability to take on physical and psychological stress and adapt."- Dr. Erik Korem   "The five key pillars for building adaptive capacity are sleep, exercise, mental fitness, nutrition, and fostering and engaging in healthy relationships (community). Not only will these five pillars improve adaptive capacity, but they are the key to preventing the most common lifestyle diseases plaguing society (i.e., diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular disease)." - Dr. Erik Korem “I maybe have a different concept on leadership. To me, leading is a verb. If you're leading, you're a leader. If you're swimming, you're a swimmer, if you're driving, you're a driver. If you're leading, you're by definition a leader. I define leading as being looked to in a particular moment to decide or perform an action based on your unique gifts and abilities. So by that definition, everybody is a leader. All rank and role really describe is how many people are hoping you get it right when it's your turn to wear the weight.” - Clint Bruce "Attention is the currency of performance." - Dr. Peter Haberl “That's what I've discovered in the lives of brilliant, prolific, healthy creatives, is that they have networks of people they leverage in the course of their work. That they learn from, that they were challenged by, that they gave great insight and purview into their own life and work, in such a way that they were able to receive feedback that helped them get better at what they do.” - Todd Henry "Restful and fulfilling sleep enables you to grow, adapt, and thrive. It creates the conditions for adaptation, so you can pursue audacious goals and thrive in uncertainty." - Dr. Erik Korem "Most exercise programs fail, not because the reps and sets are poorly designed, but because the program doesn't adjust for how much stress your body can adapt to that day! How do you create a life that combines neuroscience with social activism?   Well, our next guest Dr. Peter Sterling has written the playbook on it. From being a Freedom Rider and getting arrested for social justice to seeing the connection between discrimination and brain stress, Dr. Sterling started to see a connection between wellbeing, brain science and overall health in marginalized communities.   He also shows how this affects our Intercultural Creativity®.   Working in communities of color, Dr. Sterling observed high rates of strokes from hypertension and began to explore its neural basis. He soon realized that it was not primarily a problem of the body or genes (as the medical textbooks still claim) but rather chronic stress mediated by the brain to the body (blood vessels, heart, and kidney). What caused this effect?   Discrimination and lack of belonging.   He began to publish articles on this topic, beginning in 1977, and what he learned about the brain-body connection ultimately developed into two books, 'Principles of Neural Design' and 'What is Health? Allostasis and the Evolution of Human Design' (2020).   Join us as we jump into the intersection of well-being, the mental and creative effects of being excluded and how art is an important component for our mental health. Check the website here: http://enlites.com/ Dr. Peter Sterling is Professor of Neuroscience in the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. His broad goal has been to learn how the brain is designed – to understand its functional architecture. He is the author of books like Principles of Neural Design, and What is health? Allostasis and the Evolution of Human Design. In this episode, we focus on What is health?. We start by talking about the best way to approach the study of how the brain is designed, and how to study it at different scales. We discuss the concept of “allostasis”. We talk about four epochs that characterize the design of the human brain. We discuss the concept of “optimality” in design. We talk about an explanation for things like music, art, play, comedy, and laughter. Finally, we get a bit into questions surrounding modern medicine, like how to distinguish between a disorder and expected variation, and the problem with the principle of homeostasis. -- A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY PATRONS/SUPPORTERS: KARIN LIETZCKE, ANN BLANCHETTE, PER HELGE LARSEN, LAU GUERREIRO, JERRY MULLER, HANS FREDRIK SUNDE, BERNARDO SEIXAS, HERBERT GINTIS, RUTGER VOS, RICARDO VLADIMIRO, CRAIG HEALY, OLAF ALEX, PHILIP KURIAN, JONATHAN VISSER, JAKOB KLINKBY, ADAM KESSEL, MATTHEW WHITINGBIRD, ARNAUD WOLFF, TIM HOLLOSY, HENRIK AHLENIUS, JOHN CONNORS, PAULINA BARREN, FILIP FORS CONNOLLY, DAN DEMETRIOU, ROBERT WINDHAGER, RUI INACIO, ARTHUR KOH, ZOOP, MARCO NEVES, COLIN HOLBROOK, SUSAN PINKER, PABLO SANTURBANO, SIMON COLUMBUS, PHIL KAVANAGH, JORGE ESPINHA, CORY CLARK, MARK BLYTH, ROBERTO INGUANZO, MIKKEL STORMYR, ERIC NEURMANN, SAMUEL ANDREEFF, FRANCIS FORDE, TIAGO NUNES, BERNARD HUGUENEY, ALEXANDER DANNBAUER, FERGAL CUSSEN, YEVHEN BODRENKO, HAL HERZOG, NUNO MACHADO, DON ROSS, JONATHAN LEIBRANT, JOÃO LINHARES, OZLEM BULUT, NATHAN NGUYEN, STANTON T, SAMUEL CORREA, ERIK HAINES, MARK SMITH, J.W., JOÃO EIRA, TOM HUMMEL, SARDUS FRANCE, DAVID SLOAN WILSON, YACILA DEZA-ARAUJO, IDAN SOLON, ROMAIN ROCH, DMITRY GRIGORYEV, TOM ROTH, DIEGO LONDOÑO CORREA, YANICK PUNTER, ADANER USMANI, CHARLOTTE BLEASE, NICOLE BARBARO, ADAM HUNT, PAWEL OSTASZEWSKI, AL ORTIZ, NELLEKE BAK, KATHRINE AND PATRICK TOBIN, GUY MADISON, GARY G HELLMANN, SAIMA AFZAL, ADRIAN JAEGGI, NICK GOLDEN, PAULO TOLENTINO, JOÃO BARBOSA, JULIAN PRICE, EDWARD HALL, HEDIN BRØNNER, DOUGLAS P. Everybody has a story and this podcast is always seeking out new insight, information, perspectives, and opinions. Everybody has a story. My life is an open book and gladly share with the world my pain, my suffering, and anything that I feel someone can relate to and/or help someone. Many years ago, during my drug abusing days, I was lost. Despite many of the arguments that these drug abusers just want to get high, and want to live this irresponsible life that will kill you any day, they are wrong. I wanted out. I wanted to be free from that nightmare. I hated myself, my life, and wasn't able to see a future. Some of us start young in life while others wait some years to begin. Either way, it doesn't look good for anything or anybody. Stay tuned for my guest today. He is an author of “The Naked Guy in the Attic.” and has a powerful story of hope.Drug abuse has many faces and it can be hard to pick them out until it is tyoo late. Having worked with many people over the years; you come across some who didn't embrace this demon, or to even go darker, sell their soul until later in life. For those who can say that they started young as I did, it wasn't usually the same reason we started as those who began later in life. I started to self-medicate depression, felt a pleasure that I never thought existed, it gave me confidence, more outgoing, and it masked all of my fears and feelings I wasn't comfortable with. For those later in life, it was usually a major event that triggered the desire to try it. This way they could numb or avoid the pain. The similarities that we all had was that it worked, or at least seemed to work in achieving what we thought we needed. Now solving it in the world of drugs is not the way most think of as a solution but pushing it far enough way to forget about it or not feel anything about it.For my listeners who haven't experienced the horrors of chemical dependency, I am fighting hard against the stigma and am working to get people to understand the grip it takes. As words can hardly describe the power; I have a guest today who fits the face of a powerful meth addiction that began later in life and it was triggered by a major event.Methamphetamine, for those that haven't used it, creates a powerful illusion that life is perfect, the drug induced pleasure is so powerful that you can't even imagine there is a problem with it until it is too late. How can you argue that energy, focus, pleasure, and confidence are bad. Feelings go away and emotional pain no longer seems to matter. As you continue using the drug, tolerance builds, requiring more of the drug until you have walked out of homeostasis into a new norm called allostasis. Allostasis requires the drug to keep moving and without it, you are completely incapable of functioning at all. Did I know that this would happen when I started? No. I felt that this solution would last forever. Did all of my education in school teach me this. No. In school; I was taught, just say no. What was I to say no too? Energy, focus, pleasure, and confidence. We continue to fail our people. Fear tactics without real education tells us nothing.

The old definition of health is that it is a static state. Molly is on a mission to radically extend healthspan, maximize human potential, and redefine health care using medicine, technology, education, & media. Her fascination with innovation permeates her concierge medical practice that is focused on providing personalized medicine to entrepreneurs, technology executives, investors, & celebrities in Los Angeles and the Bay Area. The new idea of health is the ability to adapt and manage it when faced with adversity! This statement was made abundantly clear throughout the organic conversation that Louisa and Molly have as they delve into the hormonal adaptations of women during their 30's and draws an insight into self diagnosis as a means for longevity - 'know thyself'. Homeostasis vs Allostasis, which is our ability to achieve stability through behavioral change and mental health through the ability of an individual to reach their potential, cope with stressors and contribute to their community. The key to healthy aging by fundamentally building bioenergetic capacity by building mitochondria, essentially our power plants. Find Molly here: https://drmolly.co/and https://www.instagram.com/drmolly.co/

Podcast: Brain Science with Ginger Campbell, MD: Neuroscience for Everyone (LS 60 · TOP 0.5% what is this?)Episode: BS 178 Peter SterlingPub date: 2020-11-27This month's episode of Brain Science features neuroscientist Peter Sterling sharing the key ideas for his new book What Is Health? Allostasis and the Evolution of Human Design. In recent years neuroscientists have developed a growing appreciation of the predictive functions of the brain. Sterling takes this principle to the next level by asking what this means for human health. He argues that medicine's traditional focus on homeostasis ignores the much larger role of what he calls allostasis, which is a word he actually coined many years ago to capture the idea that the brain's predictive function is critical to health. His book explores the ancient origins of both allostasis and homeostasis with an emphasis on why recent changes in the human life style contribute to the health problems of modern life. One goal of this episode is to remind listeners that understanding how the brain works may be the key to our future survival. Links and References: What Is Health?
