Getting Unstuck 05/19/23: Ep. 45: "What's Behind Life" How do you get unstuck when your deepest wish does not come to fruition? My guest, Sherrie Laryse, was on a 7-year rollercoaster ride of trying, as she puts it, to fall pregnant. As you will hear in this episode, she used emotional intelligence techniques and meditation to find peace with her outcome. What I love about our conversation is she discusses how she began to find gratitude in everything, the “good” and the “not so good”. Sherrie began journaling her way through the ups and downs of trying to become pregnant and these healing pages ultimately became a fabulous book. Her book, On Path, can be found at Amazon as well as other retailers. Sherrie is also a Demartini Method Facilitator, Neuro Linguistics Master Practitioner, Suicide Support and Trauma Trained, Demartini Institute training in Psychosomatics and in years gone by, Reiki Master and Corporate Guru. She also does one on one healing. Timeless Teachings - Spirituality and Mysticism in Daily Life
The world has been shocked this week, when we found out that tWitch took his life. A father of 3 wonderful children, a husband, a son, a brother, an entertainer, an inspiration and a role model to so many across the world. What has happened? Why someone who are seemingly so successful, so loving, so blessed and so happy… would suddenly go to a hotel room and shoot himself? How can one feel so alone and so isolated in their suffering… when there are so many people who love and care? In this episode we talk about what is really going on behind the closed doors of truly successful people, why our current society is deeply guilty for driving people mad, how can we prevent such incidents from happening, how can we help those who are going through a “dark night of the soul”…I am also sharing a few insights into my own personal journey of mental wellbeing, how I have been struggling with my inner demons, and what/who has helped me to choose life. Retired Police Captain Robert Sweaza and his wife, Kristen, are my guests in Part Two of Mental Illness with Police Officers, where we discuss mental illness and how it relates to law enforcement officers. Kristen and Robert are the founders of Blue Wives Matter, a nonprofit dedicated to providing support for the families of fallen law enforcement officers. In this conversation, we talk about the particular challenges of mental health and suicide prevention education in law enforcement, the mental health stigma as it relates to first responders, and what goes into supporting the families of fallen officers. If you are in crisis or know someone who is...please call: Suicide Lifeline at 1-800- 273-8255 or text the word “help” to 741-741 http://afsp.org/get-help About Blue Wives Matter: Blue Wives Matter was founded in 2017 after the untimely death of Fountain Valley California Police Officer Rick Nilos. Officer Rick Nilos dedicated his life to helping others, as a police officer and a US Marine. It was in his death that Blue Wives Matter became inspired to help the families who are left behind. It is our mission to provide the support that families need in their time of loss and grief. We support families no matter the cause of death. Blue Wives Matter has provided support to over 100 widows and widowers. Support has been provided financially and emotionally. This year we plan to offer mental health grants for those in need while dealing with grief. Blue Wives Matter also honors the children of officers who have died through the Patches of Honor Program. Each month, these children receive police patches in the mail. Patches are donated from agencies and officers all over the world. As the children build their patch collection, they feel connected to the law enforcement community. Professional Certified Coach Michelle Ahnang knows very well how not allowing yourself to grieve can hurt you far after you've lost a loved one to suicide. 15 years ago, Michelle's husband killed himself. Their family decided not to tell people the truth about his death for some time, which made Michelle's healing process long and arduous. In this episode, she talks to Hope Out of the Darkness about the words that got her attention and helped her decide to get herself well, then turn her experience into a platform to help others with their own mental health challenges. If you are in crisis or know someone who is...please call: Suicide Lifeline at 1-800- 273-8255 or text the word “help” to 741-741 http://afsp.org/get-help About Michelle: Success is a strange thing. It's never a linear path, but a collection of events and our reactions to them. What we do with what we are presented is up to us. It makes sense then that our success is also up to us. My path has not been a linear one, as so many of us have experienced. Growing up with emotional abuse in a constrictive house my sense of worth and worthiness were eroded, obscuring my identity. I learned that in order to be safe, I must become invisible and silent. I lived by others' expectations, never realizing my own. I remained this way into adulthood, my marriage and new motherhood. But then the unthinkable happened. My husband of 12 years, my best friend, died by suicide. With two young children to look after, I shifted into survival mode without ever processing my own grief, confusion and anger. Meanwhile, my husband's suicide lingered over me, the stigma stripping me of my ability to speak the truth of both him and what happened. I remained shame-driven. Climbing out of silence. I lived that way for over ten years, until I was no longer able to carry this backpack of shame and guilt and silence. I was forced to confront everything--my childhood, my husband's death, and my identity as a widow, all while raising my two beautiful children alone. I started going to therapy and began the hard work of healing and discovering who I was. I learned that my voice was stronger than silence and that I was more than the singular events that brought me to this place. The true me. It's from these experiences that my coaching practice was born. Throughout my healing and discovery process, I learned what it meant to guide others living with mental health challenges, and the lethal impact of stigma and silence. This is what I do: I help strip the silence, shatter the stigma, and get you on the path to becoming who you truly are. I work to support families faced with mental health challenges, individuals who are ready to stop their own cycle of self-sabotage, and professionals struggling with balance. This is my mission. I hold a BA in Psychology from York University, am a Professional Certified Coach (PCC), and a Certified Professional Co-Active Coach (CPCC). I am Mental Health First Aid certified through the Mental Health Commission of Canada. I am also trained in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction and Mindfulness Training for Emotional Resilience, and am an active public speaker and educator. I'm an avid lover of dance, reading and general decompression. My sons, Eric and Zack, are my world, although they love to roll their eyes at me, particularly when I'm dancing. Host: Shell Pavlis Guest: Jennifer Sandowsky Jennifer Sandowsky literally wrote the book on exploring the role of unresolved emotions so that we can shine the light of forgiveness on ourselves to liberate us from the victim inside. In this candid interview, she highlights the importance of advocating for yourself, understanding all courses of available treatment, and using a tool like her Mental Health Life Report. Jennifer gives great advice on how to have an open dialogue with your health professionals and daily practices for your own empowerment to heal. If you are in crisis or know someone who is...please call: Suicide Lifeline at 1-800- 273-8255 or text the word “help” to 741-741 http://afsp.org/get-help Jennifer Sandowsky grew up in New Jersey with a mother, brother, and aunt who all had schizophrenia. An extremely chaotic upbringing, along with frequent disputes with her Father, was followed by the tragic deaths of her closest friend at the age of 14, "when she was hit by a car and dragged to her death in front of Jennifer," and the murder of her grandfather at the age of 16. She was also expelled from high school and placed in a facility for "emotionally troubled youngsters." Years later, her life improved, and Jennifer graduated from college with a B.A. in Psychology, then went on to have a long career in pharmaceutical sales, selling both antidepressants and antipsychotics. Through Forgiveness Jennifer and her father have established a very close and loving relationship. Jennifer approaches mental health through "journeys" of oneself in ordinary life events that we can all connect to, yet in a casual and inviting manner. Unlike other systems that offer a more linear or scientific view, this approach helps to break down the “good, bad, and ugly” within us all. Host: Shell Pavlis Guest: Joseph Reid A support group allows members to exchange personal experiences and thoughts, coping methods, and firsthand knowledge about mental health. A support group can bridge the gap between your own coping strategies and the need for emotional assistance for many people. A person's connection with a doctor or other mental health staff may not give enough emotional support. Groups made up of family, friends, and others who have had similar experiences may be a strong and influential tool for meeting your emotional needs and helping you through even the most trying times. If you are in crisis or know someone who is...please call: Suicide Lifeline at 1-800- 273-8255 or text the word “help” to 741-741 http://afsp.org/get-help Joseph Reid has had a passion for loving and helping people from a very early age. Suicide, attempted suicide, and purposeful self-harm have all increased as a result of this increase in social media use, particularly among adolescents. According to several studies, greater use and exposure to social media platforms predicts an increased likelihood of undesirable consequences such as bullying and may lead to suicide. Here are some suggestions for using social media in a healthy and productive manner. Follow people and things that bring you joy. Unfollow unhealthy accounts. Support and connect with others in real life. Reduce your screen time. Take an extended break away from social media when needed. Marie Cradle joins this episode of Hope Out of the Darkness to talk about the dangers of social media and offers tips and tricks on how to become more conscious of when you're starting to develop toxic and potentially harmful behaviour. She shares some of her favorite self-care practices and urges people to design their own self-care routine, both on and off line, to help improve their mental health. Marie also shares the various challenges of trying to reach people through social media and how AFSP has found success by using social media marketing. AFSP is working to not only bring awareness to suicide prevention, but also reach people who might be in need and don't know where to look. 00:00 Introduction 1:15 How did you get involved with AFSP? 3:25 What's your social media background? 6:18 The challenges of reaching those at risk 8:57 How to use social media in a healthy way 15:05 Upcoming AFSP programs 19:40 Suicide prevention hashtags 24:02 AFSP top Events 25:11 What is the Out of the Darkness Walk 32:57 Your go to suide prevention and mental health resources 35:29 Listener Question Connect with Shell Pavlis: American Foundation of Suicide Prevention OC Board Member, AFSP Give Back Partner Realtor® Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties shellpavlis.afsp@gmail.com All Shell's Social: https://linktr.ee/shellseeshell Connect with our Guest: Marie Cradle, America Foundation of Suicide Prevention, OC Board Member cradlewrites@gmail.com marinarena.com IG: @marinarena_web https://afsp.org/chapter/orange-county https://bewelloc.org/ Council on Aging OC https://www.coasc.org Children's Hospital of Orange County https://www.choc.org/mental-health/ Hoag Hospital https://www.hoag.org/about-hoag/community-benefit/hoag-programs/mental-health-services/ University of California, Irvine https://counseling.uci.edu/services/ Let's Stop Suicide. Each year, over 45,000 Americans die by suicide, averaging 123 suicides each day. According to a 2014 assessment, despite the high risk of suicide in the United States, around 40% of people with mental illnesses do not seek medical help. One of the main reasons why people don't seek help, according to researchers, is stigma. Suicide is a sensitive subject that should be handled with care and respect. It's not simply about being politically correct. Whether we're having a conversation, talking to someone who has lived experience, or writing about the problem in a professional situation. It all boils down to saving lives. As our knowledge and awareness of suicide grows, so must our approach to discussing it. To help us be more aware of our own language choices, Nancy discusses the power of a solid support system and surrounding yourself with loved ones, the correct terms those around you can use to better communicate and help, what not to say and where to find suicide prevention resources. 00:00 Introduction 2:34 The language of suicide prevention 5:18 Using the correct terms when speaking about suicide prevention 7:33 The power of a solid support system 10:46 Ways to show support 12:27 What not to say 16:30 being the chapter chair of AFSP 19:44 Duck Duck Hope 23:34 Suicide prevention resources 25:57 Listener question 27:27 Self tips for loss survivors Connect with Shell Pavlis: AFSP Volunteer, Advocate, Event Sponsor, Give Back Partner Realtor® Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties shellpavlis.afsp@gmail.com All Shell's Social: https://linktr.ee/shellseeshell Connect with our Guest: Nancy Cooper, America Foundation of Suicide Prevention, OC Chapter Chair ncooper1011@gmail.com https://afsp.org/chapter/orange-county https://bewelloc.org/ Council on Aging OC https://www.coasc.org Children's Hospital of Orange County https://www.choc.org/mental-health/ Hoag Hospital https://www.hoag.org/about-hoag/community-benefit/hoag-programs/mental-health-services/ University of California, Irvine https://counseling.uci.edu/services/ Let's Stop Suicide. It's sometimes referred to as "development work" and is very relational. Community building, communication, effusiveness, enthusiasm, cheerleading, optimism, sincerity, and the capacity to establish and execute plans are all part of how the AFSP approaches raising funds to make a difference in people's lives. The AFSP hosts several events in support of suicide prevention year round. They bring individuals together from all walks of life who wish to help prevent suicide in their communities. Chapters are energized by families and friends who have lost loved ones to suicide, vulnerable persons, mental health professionals, clergy, educators, students, community/business leaders, and many others. This week on Mouth Wide Shut we're super duper proud to introduce Paige and Coral, our favourite sisters who are doing all they can to help prevent suicide! "My mind breathes when i'm asleep, it doesn't need my brain to do anything with it." Paige and Coral founded @itsokay.needtotalk an online mental health service based on Instagram, that aims to bridge the gap between managing your demons alone and going to therapy/seeing a doctor. The girls open up about their personal heartbreak with suicide, which lead them to set up this platform, as well as dealing with PTSD, OCD, and depression. With so much personal experience around mental health, Paige and Coral offer some invaluable tips on managing panic attacks, supporting people struggling with suicide, as well as educating us on the important of "social media health", and how you can curate your Instagram feed in a way that makes you feel good! These girls are utterly incredible and I hope you gain a huge amount of knowledge and positivity from this episode! BIG LOVE xoxo
