From the moment she joins the conversation Swami Nityananda's warmth and joy shines through. I start at the beginning, requesting a better understanding of “Swami” and her names. If, for even a second, you struggle to find your true self… or you define yourself by one of the roles you play in life, Swami will remind you of your strengths, and loveliness… again and again. Connectedness is a bit of a theme throughout, but Swami also has thoughts on those people who live and connect only with themselves. We have some discussion about gender and Swami explains that the divine is beyond gender, as is the light inside you / us but… we have social circumstances that also come into play. My questions may have proven my lack of knowledge in this episode but Swami's explanations really reflect her knowledge of, her belief in all facets of her practices. So much inspiration and joy from Swami Nityananda in this episode. On episode 111, I welcome Swami Nityananda. As Dr. Juniper Ellis, she is Professor of English at Loyola University Maryland. As Swami, she is the spiritual teacher and spiritual leader at Awake Yoga Meditation, a meditation community located physically in Baltimore that reaches listeners in many geographical areas.Highlights: 1.    Each human has a natural connectedness – to find yours, ask yourself where do you feel alive, at peace, calm?2.    It is simple to connect to your natural state of peace and calm, if you will pause long enough to remember (it is always with you…and you already know).3.    Connect with this pure energy first thing in the morning by setting an intention “I am….” (can you take a moment to do this before you look at your phone?) 4.    Tapping into this way of being will give you access to your intuition and help you navigate your day in a joyful way – step-by-step, choice-by-choice. Moment-by-moment.5.    This really is simple – yes, just a few minutes will make a difference!6.    Taking a few minutes in the morning and after work is a huge investment in your well-being (and whatever time you spend connecting with yourself you will get back in spades).7.    When life gets challenging, these simple practices will allow you to “shake off” stress like a duck shakes off drops of water and give you the opportunity to respond (rather than react).8.    When you take a few minutes to refresh and reset you improve every aspect of your life because you have access to your best self.9.    Use technology in a way that helps you connect with your intention (and if they aren't helping you, choose to use them in a different way); some ideas: sleep with your phone in another room, silence it, put it face side down, pick a screen saver that will remind you to breathe, write a positive message on your bathroom mirror, use a mindfulness bell app, etc. More ideas here: https://www.buzzsprout.com/1547113/1183239810. Pick a daily intention that will assist you move through your day – pick a word (calm, clarity, peace) and breath into this word. 11. We have the ability to create positive new pathways in our brain – things like picking an intention and focusing on that each day, simple yoga poses, taking deep breaths, will change your nervous system.12. Use YouTube to search for tools that will help you find methods that resonate with you (personally, I love Yoga with Adriene). 13. Trust. Trust yourself, your brilliance, the light within you, your own awareness and ENJOY giving yourself the gift of connection to the version of your best self.  Connect with SwamiWebsite: https://www.Awakeyogameditation.orgIG: @swami_nityananda_giriIG: @awakeyogameditationYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/awakeyogameditationTikTok: @swami_nityananda_giriFB: https://www.facebook.com/awakeyogameditationcenter/Get her book,  Awake: The Yoga Support the showSupport this free content: https://www.buzzsprout.com/1547113/supporters/new Get The Happy Doc Student Handbook: https://www.amazon.com/dp/0578333732Other resources at: http://Expandyourhappy.com Treat me to a green tea: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/expandyourhappyWant to make my day? When we are kind to ourselves, we are more able to extend kindness to others. But the Dalai Lama talks about how at the end of the day, he's tired, and he can get cranky. If that's true for the Dalai Lama, it allows us to have a sense of graciousness and patience with ourselves. This is how we offer unconditional kindness to the world, it starts by offering it to ourselves first.  In today's episode, join Matt as he interviews Swami Nityananda, a devoted spiritual teacher at the Awake Yoga Meditation community. Her teachings invite people to explore their innate capacity for love, wisdom, joy, harmony, and kindness – prompting people to ask, "How may I be of service?" Today's show unravels the power of unconditional love and kindness, revealing how all of us can triumph even in challenging times. Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation:  What is a natural expression of our spiritual energy? The concept of equipoise The story of the mother who donated her son's heart Choose love first, or choose love second. Self-awareness and the ability to self-correct Focus on the light that is present everywhere How every human is connected to their own energy [02:40] Discovering Your Unique Awakeness: Embracing Joy, Curiosity, and Dedication Within you, lies a profound joy intertwined with an insatiable curiosity and an unwavering dedication to exploring spiritual questions. This innate awakening is the natural expression of your vibrant spirit. As each listener embarks on their journey, a fundamental question emerges - what form does this joy, curiosity, wonder, and creative life energy take for each of us individually? Like beautiful fingerprints, we possess a unique identity, but beneath it all, there lies a signature energy that defines our awakeness. Embrace the exploration of your own authentic expression. [15:39] Choosing Love First, Or Choosing Love Second Every human has the ability to choose love and kindness or just step out of the stream. If we do step out of the stream, just choose to step back again. The Dalai Lama talks about how at the end of the day he's tired and not his best self. This allows ordinary humans to have a sense of humor, graciousness, and patience. By cultivating these qualities within, we become more capable of extending the same graciousness and patience to those we encounter on our journey. [30:05] Harnessing the Power of Light and Love: Connecting to our Inner Divine Awareness In moments of anger, frustration, or disconnection, it's crucial to tap into the energy of light and pure love. This divine energy of righteousness, truth, justice, and clarity resides within each of us. By embracing this awareness, we can transcend doubt and live from a place of pure potentiality. So, whenever you encounter injustice or observe feelings of separation, channel the energy of light and love to align with your truest self and radiate your unique essence to the world. Notable quotes: [18:32] When we're gracious & patient with ourselves, we're more able to extend graciousness & patience to others. [18:40] [30:05] If you do experience that feeling of anger or feeling of frustration, or a feeling of disconnect… connect with the energy of light. Connect with the energy of pure love. We are bringing healing, compassion, wisdom, and awareness in." - Swami Nityananda"Of course, if you are a human facing loss, there's an adjustment and it's really honest spiritually to say 'This is a big adjustment that I'm going through, and humanly I'm experiencing grief right now.' And it becomes much easier to move through it gracefully, to not push down the feelings, not deny them, but also to connect with that wholeness, if we're able to connect with that connectedness which goes so far beyond the physical." - Swami Nityananda"Stay here. Every moment that you have to stay here in the body, stay here. Be fully here, and, when the time comes, do not fear. Absolutely do not fear." - Swami Nityananda

Even when it feels like your insides are crumbling. It's an invitation to approach ourselves and others with compassion and learn how to connect light to light. We explore what the saying "We Are All One" might actually mean and how we can respect both our universal energy and individual bodies. Swami Nityanda teaches non-dual awareness, which is simply the practice of being aware that there is truly no separation between us, a philosophy that can guide us toward peace and empathy. The message in this episode for all of us is that there is an easier way to awaken and experience a life of joy. And that way begins by accepting that we are already part of a universal consciousness - think of it as divine light - that knows us completely and cares about us deeply. It is a living wholeness that includes all sentient beings, and in fact all of existence. Swami defined awakeness as being in contact with the energy of divine awareness. We can choose to expand our light/spiritual self at any time to allow awareness of that living wholeness. When we do, we shift from the illusion of separation to instead directly experience the divine light, its wholeness, its unlimited goodness, and its joyful beingness. At any time, you can accept the world and its problems as they are AND realize that our spirit is greater than any of the world's problems. You can give yourself permission to see yourself as a child (or being) of light, and you can choose to experience human life in a more enlightened and holistic way. She also talked about the shared unity experience of meditating in community. At the end of our conversation, she told us to "Trust in the Light." Swami Nityananda has a new book out that I highly recommend called Awake: The Yoga of Pure Awareness. The book teaches beautiful insights about living in a state of awakeness. — Awake energy is fresh, new, and present within us and within all of existence. When we are in contact with awake energy, we trust the goodness, wisdom, and spontaneity of our knowingness and beingness. We are aware that we interact with all of existence and are supported by a network of steady light and kindness through every experience, the ones we humanly term wonderful, and the ones we humanly term terrible. We also understand that as we thrive in insight and caring, we support all beings in their insight, caring, success, and victory on all levels. If our perceptions have carried fear, obstruction, limitation, or have encouraged us to believe in the illusion of separateness, we heal those perceptions. We live in the fullness of the present moment, in overflowing pure love, wisdom, strength, courage, and confidence. We trust the beneficence of life here and now, in our very bodies, hearts, minds, and lives — and in every moment and every time and place. We are in harmony with our own energy and so interact with the energy of other human beings with nonattachment and understanding, caring and good humor. We do not expect our satisfaction to come from other humans acting in any predetermined way because we are aware that satisfaction is within us always — and then naturally, the beauty and preciousness of all life will shine spontaneously in energy, consciousness, and openness, including through unprecedented kindness and gladness shared with other humans. Valeria interviews Swami Nityananda  — She is a spiritual teacher and spiritual leader of Awake Yoga Meditation and author of Awake: The Yoga of Pure Awareness. Swami Nityananda became a student of Swami Shankarananda in 2010. Swami Shankarananda, who founded the Awake Yoga Meditation community, immediately recognized her as his successor. He announced that publicly in 2013 when he consecrated her as spiritual teacher and spiritual leader of the meditation community. In 2014 he consecrated her as a Swami and asked her to carry on his lineage and the teaching of Kriya Yoga. As Juniper Ellis, she is Professor of English at Loyola University, where she teaches American Literature and World Literature Written in English. She earned her PhD at Vanderbilt University. She has held Fulbright grants in New Zealand and Germany, and other national awards including an Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship and an NEH grant. Her book Tattooing the World: Pacific Designs in Print and Skin was published by Columbia University Press. Her scholarly articles have appeared in respected journals in many English-speaking countries. Her teaching helps listeners and readers connect with the reality of love, wisdom, liberation, joy, harmony, and kindness. People who meditate with her find Swami Nityananda practices a selfless way of living in the world that asks, "How may I be of service?" and models through open-hearted, generous, and effervescent guidance, a path for us all to recognize our own inherent divine qualities, and to see the same in everyone.   To learn more about Swami Nityananda and her work, please visit: awakeyogameditation.org                 — This podcast is a quest for well-being, a quest for a meaningful life through the exploration of fundamental truths, enlightening ideas, insights on physical, mental, and spiritual health. In today’s conversation, three of Baba’s direct disciples share a behind the scenes conversation about what it was like living and serving Baba and his global mission and the thousands of followers and devotees he touched. This is a conversation about the often-subtle teachings of one of the greatest yogis of the 20th century. We share the candid stories and insights those of us who had the privilege to work with him closely and interact with him personally experienced. He was often called the Guru’s Guru. He was a Siddha, a master who had completely merged with Pure Consciousness, the field that underpins all 3D reality. He lived and worked with us from that vantage point, for the benefit of all who came in contact with him or approached him with a yearning for Truth. From the Biography, by Swami Prakashananda:Baba Muktananda was one of the most respected and revered spiritual masters of the 20th century. He not only spoke on spirituality but was an Ecstatic Yogi who had the rare ability to give a person a direct experience of the inner Self.
