The more I've read and listened to info on the Conor Benn saga the more I think this is a cover up about the failings at UKAD. Nobody has challenged the validity of the VADA tests and now that the process is over, Conor Benn is unwilling to talk on the subject. It feels like UKAD need him to be silent, more than he needs to share his side of the story. There are huge issues here that need clarifying.

At some point, British boxing has to address its issues around doping. Doping in Boxing has massively watered down the credibility of the sport and left us in a position where we don't believe results anymore. UKAD and the British Boxing Board of Control won their appeal against the National Anti-Doping Panel, which means one of two things is true: 1. Conor Benn will hold his hands up and take his punishment then we can move on or 2. The Board. will simply say he is not welcome back in a British ring. However it goes, we need a line drawn under the situation as fast as possible.

In the gritty world of boxing, where the highs and lows rival any soap opera plot, sometimes the narrative takes an unexpected turn. After a 525-day hiatus from the squared circle, English pugilist Conor Benn made his triumphant return in a 10-round clash against Rodolfo Orozco in Florida. This return, however, was shrouded in controversy, adding another layer of complexity to Benn's saga. Benn, a 26-year-old boxing prodigy boasting an unblemished record of 22 fights, was sidelined due to a doping scandal. Following two failed voluntary drug tests in 2022, administered by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA), Benn found himself in a whirlwind of speculation and accusations. Clomifene, a female fertility drug, was the unwelcome substance detected. Benn, however, vehemently professed his innocence, standing firm that he had not knowingly consumed the prohibited substance. The failed tests, coming just before a highly anticipated showdown with Chris Eubank Jr., led to Benn's provisional suspension by the UK Anti-Doping (Ukad) authority in March. Yet, in a twist that would keep any sports drama aficionado on the edge of their seat, the National Anti-Doping Panel later lifted the suspension in July after a thorough hearing. This decision, however, remains a bone of contention, as both Ukad and the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) are currently contesting the Panel's ruling. Amidst this quagmire of legal wrangling, Benn found himself without a valid boxing license in the UK, a symbol of his struggles to reconcile with the authorities. Undeterred, Benn expressed his ardent wish to return to the British boxing scene, a place he calls home, for his future bouts. His foray back into the ring in Florida was made possible by the Association of Boxing Commissions (ABC), who lifted their suspension, allowing him to lace up and fight once again. Looking ahead, the future of Benn's boxing career remains suspended in uncertainty. The appeal against the lifting of Benn's provisional ban by Ukad and the BBBofC looms large, casting a shadow on what lies ahead. Yet, the resilient Benn remains committed to clearing his name and rekindling his career. His victory over Orozco, amid the storm of controversy, underlines his boxing prowess, refusing to bow in the face of adversity. The next big fight boxing fans were truly looking forward to watching in the UK has hit a snag, and the story is making the news around the world, as it looks like Conor Benn, upon being tested for banned substances, was indeed found with a testosterone booster in his system - and the problem is the test was done months ago, yet is only now coming to light, just days before he is to fight Chris Eubank Jr. and some fans and people in the industry wonder whether it is a ploy to increase PPV sales. This is according to Matchroom: “We have been made aware that a random anti-doping test for Conor Benn conducted by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association returned an adverse analytical finding for trace amounts of a fertility drug. The B sample has yet to be tested, meaning that no rule violation has been confirmed. Indeed, Mr Benn has not been charged with any rule violation, he is not suspended, and he remains free to fight. Mr. Benn has since passed a doping control test conducted by the UK Anti-Doping Agency, the anti-doping authority to which the British Board of Boxing Control has delegated its doping control testing for the bout. Mr Benn has passed all doping control tests conducted by UKAD. Broken Oars Podcast returns with what might be called 'The Performance-Enhancing Drugs and Rowing Culture' Episode - if we went in for such things as informative titles. * Following a recent positive test being returned in British Rowing, rather than risk us talking about spaniels (again), we enlisted the help of an expert in the field, the exceedingly knowledgeable Dr. Phil Hurst.  * Phil is a Senior Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Psychology, at the School of Psychology and Life Sciences at Canterbury Christ Church University. An early-career interdisciplinary researcher with specialism in placebo effects on sports performance and psychosocial antecedents of anti-doping behaviours, between 2017 and 2018, Philip worked as a research associate at the University of Birmingham where he undertook two projects commissioned by the World Anti-Doping Agency and International Olympic Committee.    Highlights of his research include looking at the effects, or otherwise, of legal performance enhancing substances, the placebo effect, and the reasons why individuals might be more or less likely to use PEDs in competition.   He's also a Northerner, which is a bonus in anyone's book.   (This might explain why Lewin (the Southern one) conducted this interview alone: scared of being outnumbered by two articulate Northerner, he slipped AJ the wrong log-in time ... ) * Neverthless, flying solo the fast lad had a wide-ranging and informative chat with Dr. Hurst, covering:   - The psycho-social reasons why people turn to PEDs.   - Why athletes and organisations use the TUE mandate to push the line on where clean sport ends and doping begins.   - Why some sports have a history and culture of doping; and why sport as part of the entertainment industry may be feeding it; with the impact of living in an increasingly image-conscious world playing into the use of PEDs.   - Why performance-enhancing drugs don't necessarily work, but the placebo effect they provide does - and how to recreate that by cultivating positive mindsets and pre-performance rituals to replace the mental boost PED's offer some athletes.   - Why rowing globally is no better or worse than other sports, but how and why British Rowing's culture and history of hard work = results have helped protect the sport.   - Phil highlights Redgrave and Pinsent's 'we work hard' approach as one that not only aligns with Olympic values, but which carried and flagged the credibility and integrity of British Rowing to the wider world of sport.   - Noting the importance of cultural narratives in defining whether athletes and various sports use or don't use PED's, Phil suggests that the perpetuation of the narrative 'we succeed by hard work' from the top-down and the bottom-up has had a preventative effect that has kept British Rowing cleaner than its peers, warning that Robert Strachan's recent positive test means we can't rest on our laurels. * This episode is a must for anyone in rowing and sport concerned with protecting clean athletes and clean sport, and provides real insight into the whys, more than the hows and whats, of illegitimate performance enhancement in sport.   * Bowside holding ... Multiple sources have confirmed that an "A" sample taken from Dillian Whyte tested positive for one or more banned substances prior to Whyte's July 20 fight in London against Oscar Rivas. Steroid use in gyms has grown, and with a new UKAD report outlining the prevalence of this, why people are taking them, and the side effects, it's a conversation that needs to be revisited. This week is Clean Sport Week in the UK. Clean Sport week is an initiative run by UKAD (UK Anti-Doping) and is an opportunity to come together and celebrate the important values of clean sport and support the hard work that sport in the UK is doing in the fight against doping. This year the main focus of the week is on Image and Performance Enhancing Drugs (IPEDs), and in particular the use of IPEDs within the gym environment. I am joined by sport psychology consultant Dr Claire-Marie Roberts to discuss all things psychology and drug use in sport. Claire-Marie holds an academic position at the University of the West of England and works for the Premier League in coach and football manager development. She also sits of the board of UKAD. We speak about the motivations behind IPED use; normalising the use of IPEDs; the prevalence of IPEDs; social identity and breaking the cycle of IPED use.

Nicole Sapstead, Chief Executive of UK Anti-Doping (UKAD), talks about her career as a woman, her challenges, her role models and her advice for other women pursuing a career in sport and exercise. She also talks about some of the emerging and current issues among females in terms of doping in sport. Nicole Sapstead was appointed as interim Chief Executive of UKAD in January 2015 and was appointed to the position permanently in March 2015. Previously UK Anti-doping’s Director of Operations, Nicole was responsible for the delivery of the organisation’s testing, intelligence and investigations, and science and medicine functions. Nicole has worked in anti-doping since 1997, having previously worked as the Assistant to the Director and Legal Advisor at the Drug Control Centre at King’s College, and in various roles at UK Sport, where she progressed to Head of Operations before joining UK Anti-Doping on its formation in 2009. In terms of athlete pathway education, UKAD publish news articles ad hoc (see below), but the Athletes Hub is content tailored for athletes. More than 1,000 young athletes to receive UK Anti-Doping education at 2018 School Games UKAD are starting to look at the wider integrity piece – not just as it relates to anti-doping and where they can be more joined up with those other stakeholders who are also are involved with differing aspects of integrity – they are also entering into a wider remit where they feel they have a part to play with educating the wider population and those that use gyms about supplements and the increasing societal trend of steroid use.

Sir Trevor Nunn CBE is a theatre director. He is a former artistic director of both the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre. He has directed some of the most critically acclaimed and popular productions in recent decades. He is currently directing two shows in London's West End, Cole Porter's 'Kiss Me Kate' and Alan Ayckbourn's 'A Chorus of Disapproval'. Kiss Me Kate is at the Old Vic and Chorus of Disapproval is at the Harold Pinter Theatre. Debra Searle MBE is an adventurer, television presenter and is a Trustee of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award. In 2001 she set off with her then husband on the Atlantic Rowing Challenge from Tenerife to Barbados. But after only 14 days he withdrew from the race, leaving Debra to finish alone. During the last decade she achieved a new world record in a dragon boat across the English Channel. She also competed in the longest canoe race in the world. Mike Brace CBE is former chairman of the British Paralympic Association and director of Vision 2020UK. He is currently a director of UKAD, the UK's Anti-doping agency for sport. He was in Singapore in 2005 when London won the 2012 Olympic bid. Blinded at 10 in a firework accident, he represented Great Britain at cross-country skiing at six Paralympic Games, three World Championships and two European Championships. Producer: Annette Wells.
