Accountability without compassion creates negative cultures that can't retain talent, while compassion without accountability creates avoidant cultures that can't perform. The need for both compassion and accountability is greater than ever before. On this episode of The Forward Thinking Podcast, FCCS VP of Marketing and Communications Stephanie Barton is joined by Nathan Regier, CEO of Next Element and author of Compassionate Accountability.  Together they consider the importance of combining human connection and accountability in performance in ways that benefit all involved parties.   Episode Insights Include:   Compassion and Accountability Compassion is much more than sympathy – it means to literally suffer with another. Many problems don't need to be fixed, they simply need to be journeyed through together. Compassion needs to be a co-creative process. Accountability is the co-creative process of getting things done. Accountability and compassion can't exist in isolation, they have to work together.   Why does this concept matter? Conflict can happen in a way that brings people closer together when compassion and accountability are present. The compassion mindset allows people to approach conflict with a productive mindset. People struggle with this concept until they realize that compassion and accountability can change our world.   Defining a compassion mindset The compassion mindset understands the choices we make have a material impact on others and on outcomes. It is a fundamental choice that we have the opportunity to make. Value, capability, and responsibility are the three choices of the compassion mindset.   Bridging the divide with a compassionate mindset Mindset is the first essential step. Skill set is critical to ensure that the correct behaviors have been learned. The bridge between compassion and accountability is conflict. There is no other way to get to compassion and accountability than through conflict because the purpose of conflict is to create.   Navigating trust and conflict Conflict provides opportunities to build or destroy trust. ORPO can help navigate conflict - Openness, Resourcefulness, Persistence, and Openness to safety. Every interaction is an opportunity to choose drama or no drama. Ask yourself what would happen if you interacted with every conflict with respect.   Incorporating compassion and accountability into culture Consider how your efforts support human value. No matter your company's brand, it is an indicator of your company's culture. Culture will always drive the brand. There is no excuse for anyone to dismiss their lack of efforts for compassion - growth is always an option. One of the most challenging aspects of our work is holding our people accountable. I've yet to meet a leader who doesn't wish that they didn't have to and that team members would do it for themselves. But we all know that's not how it works! Holding team members accountable can feel like a parent scolding or punishing the child, and no one enjoys that, mainly when dealing with a peer. Since then Nate has been reinventing, rebuilding and realising new opportunities for sharing compassionate accountability.Nate is launching a new book in July - Compassionate Accountability: How Leaders Build Connection and Get Results. A year ago, he was planning a second edition of Conflict Without Casualties but his team changed plans in order to respond to the challenges faced by companies coming out of the pandemic.The book reflects the tension leaders experience between paying attention to relationships and getting things done. Nate's understanding of compassionate accountability was in its infancy when he wrote Conflict Without Casualties. Since then, his team has developed the three switches of the compassion mindset, a framework for activating the behaviours required within a culture of compassionate accountability.Nate's latest book complements the many excellent books on Compassionate Leadership, as the only one with ‘accountability' in its title. He contends that ‘accountability' is an essential component of compassion, reflected in the latin root of the word, which means ‘struggle with.' We live in community with one another and that involves affirming human capability and being accountable to one another.In the book Nate establishes the relationship between the interactions connecting people, organisational culture, and brand. Culture is fundamentally the sum of the interactions between your people and, as Nate's friend Bobby Herrera has observed “brand is a lagging indicator of the quality of your culture.” Part 3 of the book is about implementation. It recognises that you have to “address common systems and processes that reinforce behaviour.” It starts with identifying behavioural norms, and then identifies the functional areas where processes need to reflect those norms. There is a tool for assessing compassion within the culture of an organisation.Nate maintains that onboarding, performance reviews, promotions, and reward systems in particular need to be aligned with compassionate accountability. Regular in-house training and practice are required to keep the materials alive.He acknowledges that “everyone is different, everyone comes on board from a different place, and it's not easy.” Sometimes the assumptions we hold can create barriers for us. The notion that compassion is soft can be prominent among these.Nate believes compassion can change the world. For example, he believes compassionate accountability is the next evolution of inclusion.

Compassionate accountability means that feelings matter, thoughts matter and behaviour matters. The associated tools are helping physicians and surgeons deliver bad news to patients in a compassionate way, helping boards of directors lead their CEO's more effectively, supporting negotiators do a better job, turning regrets into commitments for the future. The applications are really infinite. Compassion is my passion admits Dr Nate Regier. Compassion isn't about what we do to other people, it's what we do with them. And that life is struggle, but struggling together makes it meaningful, it makes it productive, it makes it purposeful. We don't ever get time off when it comes to compassion, we are feeling, thinking and acting. “You can't nicey nice your way towards serious change, and big problems. Accountability without compassion gets you alienated. Compassion without accountability gets you nowhere” cautions Dr Nate. How can they co-exist in full measure without compromising either one of them?

Dr Nate Regier is a trained clinical psychologist who has built a business on a beautiful idea. Diversity is a fundamental characteristic of the human race and an inevitable consequence of that diversity is conflict. He discovered in the work of Michael Meade that compassion is the mechanism that transforms conflict from a destructive force into a creative force. Nate is Founder and CEO of Next Element, a global advisory firm specializing in leadership communication, and author of two books: Beyond Drama: Transcending Energy Vampires, and Conflict Without Casualties: A Field Guide for Leading With Compassionate Accountability. In the 11 years of his clinical practice, Nate never quite came to terms with “diagnosing, pathologizing and setting myself up as the expert.” He much preferred coaching methodologies, consultation, liaison and training. So in 2008 he set up Next Element with some colleagues, to bring what they had learnt in the clinical space to the corporate world. His interest in compassion stems from his upbringing in Africa with parents who belonged to a Christian denomination that focuses on pacifism and non-violence. He became interested in how we might bring compassion not just to war-torn areas but also into the corporate workplace. Next Element has 80 certified coaches and trains, coaches and certifies people in healthy conflict communication skills so that companies can build cultures of “Compassionate Accountability.” He maintains that compassion without accountability isn't sufficient for navigating complex differences, whilst accountability without compassion – focusing solely on results and the bottom line – fosters alienation. A culture of compassionate accountability has three features – it's safe, it's curious, and it's consistent. Whilst some of Nate's clients are on the journey from good to great, for the most part, the executives Nate works with come to Next Element “because they want the suffering to go away”: they're tired of dealing with conflict within the organisation, they wish their staff would become more autonomous and capable, they wish people could deal with their own problems. The backbone of Next Element's approach is ORPO – open, resourceful, persistent and open. For example, if someone has said something that you consider offensive in a meeting, you might approach them later and start by disclosing how you are feeling (open). Then you share what you heard, how you interpreted it, and ask them for their intention (resourceful). The ‘persistent' element might involve explaining why it is important that we support an environment of safety and open-mindedness in our meetings. Then you could close by asking them how they feel about what you have said (open). ORPO is based on the idea that we are each responsible for our behaviours and we are not trying to fix each other but struggle together towards a common outcome. So far Next Element has worked with the leaders of organisations, but they have plans for making their training more accessible and affordable. Their theme for 2020 is “compassion reimagined.” They have a 2-hour webinar “Conflict and You” and they have just launched “Compassion Mindset”, a virtual learning course in compassion. “Leading out of Drama” is their compassionate accountability model. The UK National Health Service (in Wolverhampton) is already working with Next Element. Next Element has developed measures for compassion - “the drama resilience assessment” – that measures the capacity of an individual to resist drama and, instead, to turn it into something constructive. Nate rejects the idea that there is a giving and receiving end to compassion. In his view it is co-created between parties. Next Element practices compassionate accountability within their own organisation. They are a firm based on people skills and cultures and from the beginning they decided that they would be a laboratory. They've developed specific applications of ORPO for meetings,

Conflict is inevitable in relationships, with teams, at work, and in life. My guest today is an expert in compassionate leadership and conflict resolution. Nate Regier is an author, speaker, psychologist, and the CEO of a consulting company called Next Element. He shares with us how his unique upbringing shaped his view of compassion and drove him to develop a methodology to better solve conflict without casualties. He explains what the compassion cycle is and how we can resolve even the most difficult conflicts at work and at home.  And, when we do this, our teams.   Key Takeaways: [4:54] Nate’s family did missionary work in Africa, which led to him living there and attending an ambassador school that represented 35 nationalities. Change Your Life, But Don't Make New Year's Resolutions

Happy New Year!!  The new year is a time when we typically reflect on our lives and identify the changes that we'd like to make.  The problem is that we know that New Year's resolutions typically don't work. I discuss reasons why they don't work and offer an alternative approach.  Please refer to Sustain Motivation through Compassionate Accountability for guidance about setting reasonable goals and persisting past challenges.   Any change that we attempt will only last if we are being true to ourselves and acting from self-love.  I discuss my efforts to change over the past year and the challenges that I encountered.  I also review the hidden barriers that I could not have anticipated including past life and ancestral issues.   Take Action Item: Do one thing that helps you to feel grounded.  It can be physical exercise, body scan meditation, or a self-care practice (like rubbing oil on your skin).   Bonus Take Action Item: Write out your intentions for 2018.  You may chose to refer to sources that describe how to write affirmations for manifestation when writing your list.
