Wendy James is tied up with some of my earlier memories of music. She fronted the band Transvision Vamp, who were hard to ignore in the late 80s. Songs like “I Want Your Love” and “Baby I Don't Care” were pretty big hits over here. Transvision Vamp split in the early 90s and since then Wendy has persuaded various solo projects. Interestingly her first solo album “Now Ain't The Time For Your Tears” was written by Elvis Costello, sometimes alongside Caitlin O'Riordan from the Pogues. These days Wendy is basically a cottage industry, self releasing albums and embracing direct engagement with her fanbase. She recently released an album entitled “The Shape Of History” and you'll hear clips from that throughout our conversation.

Wendy James' musical career has mirrored the life of many of her fans. From the rebellious punk stage to the seasoned, reflective artist, James has endured a lifetime of music many in the profession only dream of.Starting with the wildly successful, provocative and infectious Transvision Vamp in the 1980s - a band who oozed anarchaic intent coupled with a sexuality that would be frowned upon today - and moving through to her current solo career, James has always maintained a strong sense of worth and self belief. Professionally and personally. While her music has understandably gone through the subtle nuances of time and the public image might not be as openly flirtatious, James maintains a youthful exuberance that sees her release her tenth album The Shape Of History on October 25.James joined HEAVY earlier this week for a chat about life, music and art."There is a consistency to my songwriting," she measured when asked to delve into the musical nature of The Shape Of History. "I often say that my comfort zone is that CBGB/Max's Kansas City, mid 70s to late 70s downtown new wave punk sound that the Americans did. Even though I grew up with the English punks, it's actually that grimy New York downtown scene that I really enjoy. So there's always that in all of my albums, but The Shape of History is an expanded outlook and sound. All of my albums have experimentation, but they go off. So maybe there's a little country. Maybe there's a little blues. Maybe there's a little bit of girl pop, and this album, if it's got anything that marks it different to the albums, is the fact there's a bit of California sound in there as well. And it's called The Shape Of History because it is my tenth album and I did start when I was a teenager in 1986 and so you can chart the course of my life through all the albums I've made, and therefore you've got a shape of history."In the full interview, Wendy discussed her collaboration with Australian photographer and editor, David Lee Dodd, who condensed 48 hours of old Transvision Vamp footage into a 3.5-minute music video. She also talked about her album, The Shape of History, which starts with a beautifully ambient piano intro for the track Sweet Like Love. Wendy explained that she wanted to create a musical interlude, similar to the opening of Woody Allen's movie Manhattan, and worked with Dave Sherman to achieve this. We spoke about her history and music and how the two merge together, the changing musical landscape, her upcoming instore appearances, future tours and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

2022 has been a stellar year for music books – you'll know this if you listen to the podcast regularly, I've interviewed the authors who've penned many of the best. And though I haven't quite got around to compiling my own favourites of the year list, somewhere towards the top of said list is Exit Stage Left… The Curious Afterlife of Popstars by Nick Duerden. Nick's book came out in paperback last week, it includes new interviews with the likes of – deep breath - Bob Geldof, Shaun Ryder, Robbie Williams, Roisin Murphy, Stewart Copeland, Billy Bragg, Wendy James, Alex Kapranos, Joan Armatrading, Leo Sayer, Gary Lightbody, Lisa Maffia, Tim Booth, Bill Drummond, Rufus Wainwright, David Gray, and Justin Hawkins - so I thought it high time I got him on the podcast to talk about what happens when the bright light of fame fades… drug addiction, bankruptcy, depression and divorce… but truth be told, what Nick found out in researching the book, and what I found out here, wasn't anywhere near as miserable as you might imagine. A lot of what follows is inspiring stuff. Heads up; Some of the audio is a bit scratchy in this episode – Nick's wearing one of those headset microphones that makes him look a little bit like Madonna in the eighties. But I haven't had many people on the podcast more interesting than he this year. This was a conversation I really enjoyed and I hope you do too. Join the Substack!

Dear ones, My life is a f**king magazine. Pages of projects, my life, twixting and twaining. I've grown up in them. You are your experience, and in the same way that you are what you sleep with, you become what you do, I guess.I wasn't sure whether to hammer your inboxes daily with micro-content, a la Patti Smith, in the run-up to my biggest news to date (beyond Psychomachia) or to just throw it ALL down here.Because what I really want to share is our. Beautiful. Single. (You can nab a pre-order of here). But it feels more honourable to make a cover star award of Geoff Travis, founder of Rough Trade - arguably the most important indie label in the history of the British recording industry.  We met as judges on the Doc n Roll Festival, he memorably said, “I bet you like performing,” as we hustled together for a group shot. He's right. Just gotta stay away from manifesting drama in one's personal life, and love you what you do - but like all those Wellness Live Ya Best Life aspirational platitudes - how do you jump off the cliff by a bungy rope if you ain't stapled in financially? When I went back to university at 25, bounding in all Educating Rita, like a spring daisy from another nervous breakdown/rehab (again), I did a BA in New Media Journalism and Radio, it taught me to be pretty self-sufficient and DIY, editing across media, coding, I was working in BBC Radio as a researcher by the second year, reporting at celeb parties and on September 11th, before making radio documentaries for 1XTRA, R2, etc. Authenticity has become more and more apparent to my sanity over the years. I've taught Media Ethics, Broadcasting, Pop video courses, loads of zine workshops with victims of torture, and minority groups, after school clubs - that sort of thing before getting more and more quasi-academic, and wannabe Doctor, shifting between teaching vocational media work to City & Guilds, B-Tec, undergrads and some Masters (in a particularly sketchy institution).  I've also consulted internationally for cash. I've become more and more capable over the years, but it also means I am pretty multi-skilled and good at problem solving, but it also prevents me from working to true calling. As life does for most people who have to earn a living.  The reality of being a writer and performer is that without compromise to industry demands, you're on your own.Which flips me back to Geoff Travis -  there was a crossover period when I was still trying to lecture and edit Ambit (Ambit won in the end, despite it being a charity, and the money not being as good as teaching, I felt more committed to the responsibility of helming this great institution).I invited Travis to give a guest lecture when I was leading a class on the Music Industry to American undergrads (employed by the brilliant writer, Heidi Dunbar James).  I was surprised what I knew, despite having written about music since my early days, DJing etc, you may know from PSYCHOMACHIA, which examines  the patriarchal nature of the 90s music industry as fiction, I've been around it forever -  before editing Ambit I was the “Off The Floor” editor of the arts on DJMag, but have never felt part of the boys club -  despite knowing so many of the wheeler dealers who have hustled through life making money from music -  we all feel like outsiders sometimes. My DJ moniker took a non-female angle, K-Rocka - a nickname, and it was through doing a series of lectures about the music industry in the UK, I kinda realised that actually I'm likely qualified as much as anyone else -  but the guest lecture from Geoff Travis was landmark - I hope you may have time to listen to this founder of Rough Trade, I've added the lecture as a podcast here.  It's a masterclass in independence. He's very cool, casually reeling out how he didn't sign The Stone Roses, and being at one of The Strokes first gigs, and not knowing that one of The Libertines was going to end up a heroin addict. There's also the pain of board meetings, not really being in it for the money, and the backend of the music industry. It's solid - thank you to the students of that class for their questions…Gil and I started sharing our work live in 2018.   He's what one may call a “professional musician”, his first A&R was John Niven and he's been signed to major labels and produced John Martyn among others. He was performing with Little Barrie when we met, at a book reading for Tony O'Neill (who also used to work in music, playing keys for my friend Kelli Ali, but also Kenickie, Marc Almond and others. His first book, Digging the Vein was published by Wrecking Ball Press who put my novel out). Gil and I became friends after that signing, and in the maelstrom of our relationship, his band with Little Barrie imploded - as bands do - despite their only single as Pet Weapons being loved and played by Lauren Laverne.Gil commenced on The Long Road of who am I, why am I, etc.  The important road.We collaborated before we got together -  co-writing a poem that introduced him at Red Gallery, 15 December 2015.  And by NOLA, 2018, we were making a film for Jeffrey Wengrofsky's festival in NYC, me writing a poem, chalking it up in the streets, filmed, and Gil then made music to accompany it.  We later showed it at the Liminality show at Gallery46, first performing together there. We then played other galleries, like the Bomb Factory in North London. In Berlin, The Social, Pikes Ibiza.   We've now done a couple of tours. Our friend Martyn Goodace did the Das Wasteland compilation which was our first  release, on vinyl, from Berlin days…We met Blang! Records boss Joe, who works with Paul and Jules, Beth and La, with his wife, after the first show we did out of lockdown, in Sheffield at Sidney & Matilda, a great venue, supporting Band of Holy Joy. (There's a documentary about Blang! Records which is worth finding - about antifolk and why they started)The sound guy at Sidney & Matilda was good, turned me onto local hip-hop poet Otis Mensah - but in the basement, people were conditioned to not stand close to each other and it felt like we were defo sharing air.  By the end of the tour - it was a futile underground party of sweat-filled sardine dancing in venues in Edinburgh and North Shields.  But that first night, it was that kinda romantic dream: a record label coming up to you after a show and showing interest.  Blang! Records were later doing a residency at the Hope n Anchor is Islington and asked us to play.  We filmed the shows for them, and they offered to put out a single.  Initially it was suggested we did it with Pink Eye Club on the flipside, but we played them Rock n Roll Is A Deathwish, after they'd chosen Paradise Burns - that's what's coming.  There are 50 lathe-cuts. The artwork's by the brilliant Bert Gilbert - “northern Marina Abramović” -  who's showing at the forthcoming Horror show at Somerset House, curated by Jane Pollard and Ian Forsyth (who directed 20000 Days with Nick Cave).  We've done a beautiful UV spot bespoke print and they really are limited and beautiful. Bert used Gustave Doré as her main influence on the piece.  A modernised rising of a new enlightenment, we can but dream.David Erdos has been super-kind in his review of the single in International Times. Comparing us to everyone between early Dylan (the first record I ever DJed was Subterranean Homesick Blues), and my vox being halfway between Wendy James and Siouxie Sioux. (It's in that link…he's a genius, love his acting too…)****I would like to invite you to our single launch at Rough Trade East on Wednesday -  there are some free tickets, but they are going fast…Jonny Halifax Invocation, Sharon Gal, Savage Pencil, Gil, some poets, we'll all be celebrating the first look of The War Issue of Ambit, which coincidently is equinox (the end of summer) and World Peace Day. I began talking about this “War issue” of Ambit back in 2020, with a submission that stood out, and went public on it in April. It's resulted in 50+ international contributors selected by myself and my brilliant co-editors in Beirut, Sarah Chalabi and Zeina Chamseddine of Dongola Books. We launch in Beirut,  supported by British Council Lebanon, 18 November. There's so much to say about this issue -  and the magazine does it.  Order here.  It's a reaction to the spectacle of War we receive in mass media through mainly direct experiences from Poets, Writers, Artists.  For me, it says more than most news orgs.****If you sneak onto our Bandcamp - you'll see the artwork, but as there's a holiday tomorrow, perhaps I'll have time to make a lil video.x. Wendy James is the author of nine novels, including best-selling title "The Mistake" and "The Golden Child" which was shortlisted for a Ned Kelly award in 2017. Her debut, "Out of the Silence" won the 2006 Ned Kelly Award for best crime debut and was also shortlisted for the Nita May Dobbie award for women's fiction. Her latest novel, "A Little Bird" (Lake Union Publishing) was released in the US in November last year. A gripping and atmospheric Australian small-town thriller about a journalist who returns to the town she fled years earlier only to come face to face with her grief over the mysterious disappearance of her mother and sister. Highly recommended reading for lovers of crime fiction. I had the pleasure of chatting with Wendy about this book on the podcast a little while back.

For fans of music books from David Hepworth, Pete Paphides, Bob Stanley and Craig Brown, as well as thought-provoking human interest stories like Moondust by Andrew Smith, and books by Jon Ronson, Louis Theroux and Stuart Maconie. A quirky, thought-provoking look at the curious afterlife of pop stars. Nick Duerden has spent many years interviewing the most famous musicians on the planet. Without exception, they are at their most interesting when they've peaked, and when they are on their way down. In many ways, this is when these former idols are at their most heroic, too, because they reveal themselves not only to be humane and sensitive, but also still driven to create, to fulfil their lingering dreams, to refuse to live quietly. Some sustain themselves on the nostalgia circuit. Others continue to beaver away in the studio, no longer Abbey Road so much as the garden shed. The desire for adulation is a light that never goes out. We live in a culture obsessed by the notion of fame—the heedless pursuit of it, the almost obligatory subsequent fallout. But what's it like to actually achieve it, and what's it like when fame abruptly passes, and shifts, as it does, onto someone else? These are tales of heroin addiction, bankruptcy, depression, divorce—but also of optimism, a genuine love of the craft, humility and hope. All of which makes Exit Stage Left a fascinating, laugh-out-loud funny and often shocking look at what happens when the brightest of stars fall down to earth. Volvemos a detenernos en el disco recopilatorio de viejos héroes de Sarah "Under the bridge" y escuchamos a The Orchids y The Catenary Wires.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Transvision Vamp was one of the most popular alternative bands in the UK, with a number one album and five top 20 singles. No stranger to controversy, lead singer Wendy James was renowned for her rebellious and straight-talking attitude as well as her sexually-charged performances. Thirty years on and Wendy has now recorded six solo albums, the most recent of which, Queen High Straight, was released during lockdown. I caught up with her to talk about how digital has impacted recording and releasing music, and about what social media would have done for Transvision Vamp, given her provocative nature, had it been around at the time. In this special episode of the Digital Download podcast, I chat to Wendy about how, as an independent artist, social media is now an important promotional vehicle for her, about maintaining relationships with her fans, and about releasing a record during lockdown.

Starcrawler - and particularly frontwoman Aarow De Wilde aren't your typical teenage band. They are brash, controversial and ooze a charm not seen since Wendy James in Transmission Vamp, but one which is seeing them quickly gain attention on the international music scene. With the impending release of Devour You, Starcrawler step it up a notch, growing into themselves and their music in resounding fashion."With the first album we did it when we were still in high school and they were the first songs we ever wrote as a band," she explained, "and so its been two years since that came out and obviously we have grown. The difference betwen 16 and 18 is pretty drastic and that contributes greatly to how our music has evolved. This album shows you exactly how weve all gotten better as people and musicians.Going into the follow up, Aarow says that they had a clear picture in their mind of where they wanted it to go."We wanted it to be catchy," she offered. "We wanted every song to be catchy so it doesnt feel like there's any fillers. That's what I like least in an album is when there is a couple of songs that you always wanna skip. Of course, everyones taste is different but to me I feel that each song has its own personality and they are all equally as catchy and fun."Starcrawler elected not to play things safe either, bringing in choir backings, tube and trombones, adding an edgy layer that many would consider too risky so early in their career."I know," she laughed. "To be honest we didn't think about it that much when we were doing it. We just thought about what sounds good for each song. We didn't think lets make a country song or this type of song. We wrote songs and did what we thought would sound best for that song."In the full interview Aarow talks more about Devour You, the single 'Bet My Brains', the limited edition scratch and sniff vinyl and what it will smell like, ghe difference musically between album one and two, their live show, the possibility of an Australian tour and more.

This lecture examines poems which make reference to the Shipping Forecast, as broadcast by BBC Radio Four, including poems by Seamus Heaney, Carol Ann Duffy, Sean Street, Andrew McNeillie, and Andrew Waterman. The aim of the lecture is to consider how both the radio broadcast and the poems it inspired conceptualise the cultural geography of the British Isles. If culture is, as Wendy James has argued, 'adverbial' rather than 'nominal', what kind of cultural geography of the Isles is practised in the poems which draw upon the forecast's daily and nightly ritual of naming the sea areas around Britain and Ireland? How might this maritime and archipelagic imagination of the Isles be related to current post-devolutionary attempts to reconceive the British Isles, both politically and intellectually? All of the poems revel in the forecast's litany of names such as Dogger, Fastnet, Lundy, Heligoland and Finisterre, for example, which do not evoke places so much as they imply ideas of untapped spatial and cultural possibility within the British Isles. Might there be a utopian dimension to some of these poetic visions of the archipelago? On the other hand, some of the poems juxtapose domestic and maritime settings, and dramatise a tension between the safe and comfortable houses or beds in which listeners enjoy the broadcasts, and the exoticised coastal margins of the Isles in which the forecasts may be merely the 'cold poetry of information'.
