Wendy James is tied up with some of my earlier memories of music. She fronted the band Transvision Vamp, who were hard to ignore in the late 80s. Songs like “I Want Your Love” and “Baby I Don't Care” were pretty big hits over here. Transvision Vamp split in the early 90s and since then Wendy has persuaded various solo projects. Interestingly her first solo album “Now Ain't The Time For Your Tears” was written by Elvis Costello, sometimes alongside Caitlin O'Riordan from the Pogues. These days Wendy is basically a cottage industry, self releasing albums and embracing direct engagement with her fanbase. She recently released an album entitled “The Shape Of History” and you'll hear clips from that throughout our conversation.

Wendy James' musical career has mirrored the life of many of her fans. From the rebellious punk stage to the seasoned, reflective artist, James has endured a lifetime of music many in the profession only dream of.Starting with the wildly successful, provocative and infectious Transvision Vamp in the 1980s - a band who oozed anarchaic intent coupled with a sexuality that would be frowned upon today - and moving through to her current solo career, James has always maintained a strong sense of worth and self belief. Professionally and personally. While her music has understandably gone through the subtle nuances of time and the public image might not be as openly flirtatious, James maintains a youthful exuberance that sees her release her tenth album The Shape Of History on October 25.James joined HEAVY earlier this week for a chat about life, music and art."There is a consistency to my songwriting," she measured when asked to delve into the musical nature of The Shape Of History. "I often say that my comfort zone is that CBGB/Max's Kansas City, mid 70s to late 70s downtown new wave punk sound that the Americans did. Even though I grew up with the English punks, it's actually that grimy New York downtown scene that I really enjoy. So there's always that in all of my albums, but The Shape of History is an expanded outlook and sound. All of my albums have experimentation, but they go off. So maybe there's a little country. Maybe there's a little blues. Maybe there's a little bit of girl pop, and this album, if it's got anything that marks it different to the albums, is the fact there's a bit of California sound in there as well. And it's called The Shape Of History because it is my tenth album and I did start when I was a teenager in 1986 and so you can chart the course of my life through all the albums I've made, and therefore you've got a shape of history."In the full interview, Wendy discussed her collaboration with Australian photographer and editor, David Lee Dodd, who condensed 48 hours of old Transvision Vamp footage into a 3.5-minute music video. She also talked about her album, The Shape of History, which starts with a beautifully ambient piano intro for the track Sweet Like Love. Wendy explained that she wanted to create a musical interlude, similar to the opening of Woody Allen's movie Manhattan, and worked with Dave Sherman to achieve this. We spoke about her history and music and how the two merge together, the changing musical landscape, her upcoming instore appearances, future tours and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

These are a series of short Q&A chats we had earlier this year with some of our friends, all about their love affair with live music. We were due to publish them months ago - however the hard drive with the edited audio and song inserts corrupted! We had great fun doing them, and have therefore decided to go ahead and publish the Zoom videos in full. This video short is with the musician Jonathan Lilley. ( The Gracious Losers, Sister John). Jonathan covers pretty much every decade and genre in his recollections - including Status Quo, Patti Smith, The Swinging Blue Jeans and Transvision Vamp ( great gig, unlucky in love!) - with special mention going to his most 'gigged' artist, Bob Dylan. As ever, Jonathan is on top form, and we are sure you will enjoy his selections. ( some of them are added on video to the end of the chat on You Tube ) . Enjoy & stay safe.

Episode 21 of Season 5 kicked off TSORR at 19h00 on Thursday 26 May 2022 with Chickenfoot's upbeat 'Oh Yeah'.  From there it was Kiss and The Answer out of Ireland with a track called 'Feel the Fear'.  This was one of the most enjoyable episodes I have ever done.  It felt a bit different but I am not sure why.  It had all the usual fare; Punk from The Stranglers and the Clash, classic metal from Iron Maiden and Metallica, Grunge from Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden.  With Soundgarden, we went 'Full On Kevin's Mom'.The South African music bit was great thanks to Rebel Rocks' own Tinus Nel who had old recordings that I only had on cassette of The Diamond Dogs.  The Dogs were SA's finest live band back in the late '80s / early '90s and they would have been huge if they were in the US.  The energy from these recordings is palpable, We checked out a new track from The Black Cat Bones off the new album Book of Miriam which is being released slowly.  We also checked up Odyssey and Sacrifist.  My favorite bit was the last hour where we had some rocking heavy stuff from The Lazys and Billy F. Gibbons before having a mellow-ish Jethro Tull into Van Morrison, into Bowie bit.  Moving the show through to a seriously heavy ending took skill and worked like a charm, going via the weirdness of Electric Six and Beastie Boys and using the Kerry King solo as the bridge into Slayer with 'Americon' and then Arch Enemy with their new track 'Sunset Over Empire' and show closer 'Arrows In Words From The Sky' by Machine Head Artists featured:  Chickenfoot, Kiss, The Answer, Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, Annihilator, Iron Maiden, Texas Hippie Coalition, Hell Yeah, Danko Jones, Buckcherry, Led Zeppelin, Creedance Clearwater Revival, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Dream Theatre, Edguy, The Stranglers, The Clash, Transvision Vamp, The Diamond Dogs, Odyssey, Sacrifist, Grave Digger, Metallica, The Lazys, Billy F. Episode 20 of Season 5 aired on Rebel Rock Radio on Thursday 19 May at 19h00.  It was great to be back behind the mic after two hectic weeks in Clarens and then Cape Town.   The show kicked off with hair metal heavyweights Slaughter and a track called 'Shake This Place'.  That was the general intention from the start.  From there we checked out the two Mot's, Mötley Crüe and Mott the Hoople, with 'Angela' and 'One of the Boys' respectively. We went to Australia with The Screaming Jets and James Reyne and then to Germany with Accept and a delightful love song called 'Bucket Full of Hate'.  The show had a great mix and even featured a track from prog heavyweights Dream Theatre.  We had metal from Satan with 'My Own God', as well as more from Cancer Bats off their latest release Psychic Jailbreak.  The South African stuff came from Jasper Dan, Prime Circle, and Durban's very own Roland Suttie with his latest Theo Crous release titled 'There Was a Boy'.  By request, we slipped in The Uninvited and a track called 'Fixman' making a long overdue appearance.  It's a track of great relevance today with the immortal line "When the bullies go to war".  There was a bit of Gary Numan and Transvision Vamp and another track from Roger Kaye with Blue  Scream titled 'Weak at the Knees.  We also checked out 12th Avenue and gave a big shout-out to frontman Mark Haze who I saw in Tableview last weekend.  the good news is that Mark is rocking and sounding better than ever.  He has without a doubt one of the best voices in the world and it's wonderful to see a guy so talented.  As we said at the gig, he plays guitar as easily as breathing.  We finished off with the Admas Family, Ryan, and Big brother Bryan, lol, just a little joke.  Artists featured:  Slaughter, Mötley Crüe, Mott the Hoople, Def Leppard, Bad Company, The Screaming Jets, James Reyne, Metallica, Satan, Accept, Dream Theatre, Fate Warning, Dark Tranquility, The Rolling Stones, Gov't Mule, Jasper Dan, Roland Suttie, Prime Circle, Gary Numan & Tubeway Army, Transvision Vamp, Halestorm, Cancer Bats, Motörhead, Avenged Sevenfold, The Gaslight Anthem, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, 12th Avenue, Blue Scream, The Uninvited, AMH, Green Day, UK Subs, Pride & Glory, Slayer, Trivium, Megadeth, Kid Rock, Ryan Adams, Bryan Adams

Episode 14 of season 5 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 7 April 2022.  For the first time we clocked in with 39 tracks.  The show was light on '70's classic rock, blues and SA content for some reason.   There just seemed not to be enough time.  Things just work out that way sometimes, very little of TSORR is planned.  The show did showcase a track called 'South' off the new EP Vocabular Vacation from Deangersmith.  It made sense to feature his work in Odyssey while we were at it.  We also took in a bit of Agro and a new band out of Manchester called Heavy Sentence.  These guys are flying the flag for what may well become the NWOBHM II.  Lets hope.  The variation you have come to expect on the show was in evidence:  UK punk from Anti-Nowhere League, The Stranglers and The Jam, heavy stuff from Arch Enemy, Slayer, Megadeth, Metallica, and In Flames.  Southern Rock from Kid Rock and Black Stone Cherry, and then lesser-known metal from Tygers of Pan Tang, and Tokyo Blade.  There's plenty to get your teeth into, softer ballads from Lita Ford and The Pretty Reckless and then once again some rap / metal in a track called 'Gaddaar' by a band from India called Bloodywood.  Artists featured:  The Answer, The Quireboys, Great White, Guns ‘n' Roses, Avenged Sevenfold, Massive Wagons, Disturbed, Five Finger Death Punch, Heavy Sentence, Agro, Queensrÿche, Tesla, The Stranglers, The Jam, Anti-Nowhere League, Transvision Vamp, The Donna's, Arch Enemy, In Flames, Kid Rock, Black Stone Cherry, Greta Van Fleet, Jimmy Barnes, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Tygers of Pan Tang, Tokyo Blade, The Offspring, Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, Deangersmith, Odyssey, Accept, Avenged Sevenfold, Megadeth, Metallica, Halford, Lita Ford, The Pretty Reckless, Bloodywood, Slayer

Also: showing some mongrel, kids album energy, give Jurassic Joe his flowers, Pokemon is a gateway drug to evolutionary palaeontology, factchecking the Fauves, killer-to-filler ratio, Stiff competition, thinking you were washed at 30, the album of a year, the Bond films of hard rock, doomsday riff repositories, prosthetic eardrums, the genius of simplicity, sledging Birmo, maple syrup and melted butter, rotating tropes, morning sickness, Basils are faulty, cycling to a GnR concert, replacement Axls, very loud noises in a concrete box, good bands on bad nights, sitting down on the job, competitive woodchopping, so you’re saying there’s a chance, appetite for Appetite and extended Rain periods. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Transvision Vamp was one of the most popular alternative bands in the UK, with a number one album and five top 20 singles. No stranger to controversy, lead singer Wendy James was renowned for her rebellious and straight-talking attitude as well as her sexually-charged performances. Thirty years on and Wendy has now recorded six solo albums, the most recent of which, Queen High Straight, was released during lockdown. I caught up with her to talk about how digital has impacted recording and releasing music, and about what social media would have done for Transvision Vamp, given her provocative nature, had it been around at the time. In this special episode of the Digital Download podcast, I chat to Wendy about how, as an independent artist, social media is now an important promotional vehicle for her, about maintaining relationships with her fans, and about releasing a record during lockdown. We also cover some of her more controversial moments and her musical inspiration, and veer off into politics and sexual equality. What to do Next Subscribe to the podcast to receive new episodes automatically to your mobile or email. And if you enjoyed today's show, please email it to a friend and/or share it on your favourite social media channels. I'd love to hear from you with any comments or thoughts. I read and reply to every single email, tweet or message. And finally, it would also be very awesome and hugely appreciated if you'd be able to take a moment to leave an honest review and rating for the podcast on iTunes, as this helps others discover Digital Download. Care too much? Running around ticking boxes and meeting needs, getting things done, being there for other people? Hurt easily by someone’s reaction to something you said or did? Sometimes we need to stop caring about the things that just don’t matter. Weirdly, as I sat down to put this week’s podcast together, Transvision Vamp’s Baby I Don’t Care was playing in the kitchen which I thought was a rather apt soundrack for exactly this – stopping people pleasing, comparing, keeping up and box ticking but instead, embracing the seasons of life, letting go and allowing the leaves to fall at times.  “I no longer have patience for certain things, not because I’ve become arrogant, but simply because I reached a point in my life where I do not want to waste more time with what displeases me or hurts me.  I have no patience for cynicism, excessive criticism and demands of any nature. I lost the will to please those who do not like me, to love those who do not love me and to smile at those who do not want to smile at me. I no longer spend a single minute on those who lie or want to manipulate. I decided not to coexist anymore with pretence, hypocrisy, dishonesty and cheap praise. I do not tolerate selective erudition nor academic arrogance. I do not adjust either to popular gossiping. I hate conflict and comparisons. I believe in a world of opposites and that’s why I avoid people with rigid and inflexible personalities. In friendship I dislike the lack of loyalty and betrayal. I do not get along with those who do not know how to give a compliment or a word of encouragement. Exaggerations bore me and I have difficulty accepting those who do not like animals. And on top of everything I have no patience for anyone who does not deserve my patience.” Attributed to Meryl Streep but written by Portuguese life coach/self-help guru by the name of Jose Micard Teixeira in 2014 And the book on Fast Fashion I refer to is Fashionopolis by Dana Thomas

Along the way we’ll be finding out how much vomiting was involved in the average episode of Children's Ward, shouting sexist heckles at the male members of The Mock Turtles, saying a big hello to Fourth Bloke from Transvision Vamp, trying not to get too excited by the adventures of 'Turner The Screw', and exploring the little-known friendship between Kate Middleton and Honey Monster (Puffs). Whether this has any bearing on Gillian's choice of new National Anthem we're not saying...

In the 80s bassist Matthew Seligman was a part of some of the best alternative music coming out of England. Within the span of just a few months he managed to join the Soft Boys near the end of their run and Thompson Twins near the beginning of theirs. And shortly thereafter he forged longstanding partnerships with Robyn Hitchcock and especially Thomas Dolby, contributing to the excellent music they were producing during that decade. While this was happening, his expertise served additional artists ranging from Morrissey and Peter Murphy to the Waterboys and Transvision Vamp. He even performed with Bowie at Live Aid. As the 90s wore on, Matthew decided to turn his attention to the law and he is now a barrister in London. We discuss some of his biggest collaborations, some of the personalities involved, and his decision to leave music.
