In Cry of Murder on Broadway, Julie Miller shows how a woman's desperate attempt at murder came to momentarily embody the anger and anxiety felt by many people at a time of economic and social upheaval and expanding expectations for equal rights. Julie Miller earned her doctorate in United States history at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York in 2003. She taught in the history department at Hunter College, City University of New York, before moving to Washington DC. Her first book was Abandoned: Foundlings in Nineteenth-Century New York City (NYU Press, 2008). Her second book, Cry of Murder on Broadway: A Woman’s Ruin and Revenge in Old New York, was published by the Three Hills Imprint of Cornell University Press in October, 2020. It was begun with a Bernard and Irene Schwartz postdoctoral fellowship from the New-York Historical Society in 2006-2007. She is the curator of early American Manuscripts at the Library of Congress. Her chapter, “British Beginnings,” in The Two Georges: Parallel Lives in an Age of Revolution (Washington DC: Library of Congress), is forthcoming. Cry of Murder was written entirely outside of her responsibilities at the Library of Congress and does not reflect the Library’s views. In Bringing Down the Colonel, the journalist Patricia Miller tells the story of Madeline Pollard, an unlikely nineteenth-century women’s rights crusader. After an affair with a prominent politician left her “ruined,” Pollard brought the man—and the hypocrisy of America’s control of women’s sexuality—to trial. And, surprisingly, she won. Patricia Miller is an award-winning author and journalist whose fascination with the untold stories of women led her on a 10-year journey to unearth the story of the Breckinridge–Pollard scandal. Her work on the interplay of politics and sexual morality has appeared in the New York Times, The Atlantic, Salon, The Nation, Huffington Post, and Ms. Magazine. She received a master’s degree in journalism from New York University and is the editor of Encyclopedia Virginia.

Mrs. Zahl and I had a sort of 'Abraham/Sarah' moment (i.e., Genesis 17) this week, and it brought to mind an immortal song from 1974, performed by Paul Anka. But it was all because of the virus! This new cast, which is the 300th, talks about the supernatural Power of God in relation to the scourge that is whipping us all. I bring back an 'Oldie but Goodie', William Hale White (aka 'Mark Rutherford'), to witness concerning the Power of God through a remarkable short essay he penned in 1908. The essay is entitled "Little Nell". The conceit of White's elliptical piece is that actual conversion and authentic transformation is possible within the human situation. Not just "God with us" in our pain; but God come to reverse it, and heal it. In "Little Nell" William Hale White moves from Dickens' account of an old man's conversion to non-self-referenced love for his grand-daughter, to the conversion of St. Paul, to the power of outside love to alter the entire chemistry of the "inner man". The cast concludes with an excerpt from Eddie James's track "Power", assisted by Ashley Brison and Patricia Miller, which, if this doesn't get you out of your seat, then the virus-panic really has gotten to you. LUV U!
Patricia Miller , better known to some as River Alexandra Song has led many lives. Throughout those many lives just what has she done? She earned her degree in theatre from Northern Michigan University, where she performed in several shows and did tech for many more. She’s sung opera too, established a dinner theatre company, was consort to a jewel thief (she did get the diamond) before making an escape to California. California – where she was one of the founders of EZTV ;worked with the Mark Taper Forum Lab, and the LA Free Shakespeare Festival. She produced a horror film too…
A two-way interview between journalist Patricia Miller and Joe Dolce about the gut-wrenching illness called hyperemesis.A few weeks ago Patricia Miller, associate editor of Cannabis & Tech Today magazine, called to talk about hyperemesis, the strange and increasingly more reported illness that hits some cannabis users hard. Hyperemesis is defined as bouts of cyclical vomiting caused from combusting flower (i.e., smoking a joint), but trust me, what happens is way more painful than simple puking. It’s as if your stomach is being turned inside out – gut wrenching -- and it can last for hours, in extreme cases, days. The few scientific papers on it contend that it is followed by a compulsive desire to take hot showers. In my case I was so wasted after each bout I could barely crawl into bed, let alone stand in a shower. As one who always wants to be first on a trend, I was hit with hyperemesis while reporting Brave New Weed and about a half dozen times in the subsequent two years. I couldn’t understand how a plant that chemotherapy patients use to quell nausea would send me into paroxysms of puking. After months of investigating I never identified the cause but I did learn a lot about the chemistry and biology of the cannabis plant, and turned that into a book. There’s no consensus about what hyperemesis is or what detonates it. Dr. Raphael Mechoulam surmised it is dose or strain related. Others blame pesticides or other chemicals used in cultivation that have not been properly cleared from harvested bud. Others say it’s caused by today’s super strong weed that can clock in at 30% THC. My own experience elides all of these theories. I was smacked down after a fat dab as well as on the very first puff of a joint. As for the quality/variety of the herb, well, I’ve been privileged to inhale some of the finest, organic, sun-grown, pesticide-free weed grown in North America, so quality and variety aren’t the only culprits. Patricia proposed interviewing me about my experiences but I suggested we interview each other in hopes of informing more people who’ve been felled. I don’t think hyperemesis is necessarily a new illness; rather, I suspect more people are reporting it now that legalization has opened up the conversation. Some sufferers I’ve met have quit using completely to avoid any future misery. Personally, I’ve navigated a cautious path and have concluded that the only surefire way of inhaling flower without retching is through vaporization. My untested theory is that there is something in the plant matter itself that triggers the convulsions. Before this interview I asked a few chemists if they had come across any home grown remedies. The only response came from James Curran, who has appeared on Episode 67 of this podcast. He forwarded this study that identifies capsaicin, the fiery ingredient in cayenne pepper, as a possible antidote because it interferes with the biochemical triggering. And here’s a link to Miller’s report. Clearly, there’s more to learn, so if any of you out there in cannabisland have insights, observations or stories to share, let us know.

We all want to know, when we are down -- I mean, when we are really down -- where we can turn for help. It happens to almost everyone, at least once in your life, that circumstances -- outward, inward, or a combination of both -- pull the rug out from under you and you find yourself flat on the ground. I don't write this to upset you, because you probably wouldn't be reading it if you didn't already know this. But "Where Do I Go" ('Hair', 1969), when I have nowhere else to go? Specifically, where do I go to find God? Or rather, where is God located that I might find him? A recent BBC television series entitled "Mrs. Wilson" depicts a woman's descent into hell after she finds out that every safe harbor and mooring that her life has hitherto clung to is a lie. She finds out, very suddenly, that nothing in her life has been what it seemed. The rug is pulled out from under her life in almost every imaginable way. The story behind "Mrs. Wilson", by the way, is completely true. She does find a solution, or, better, a re-alignment of her life's attitude and position. She finds God's Love, in fact, coming down to aid her. But as I watched the moving and also Christian resolution of "Mrs. Wilson", I thought of all the ways that God is "advertised" as having come down, and therefore being available to a sufferer. And I thought of the shortcomings of at least some of those advertised ways. Then I thought of Frank Lake, and Paula White. And learned something in the process. The cast begins with an instrumental break by Los Straitjackets, which, for my money, is a solid instance of the Love that's come down; and ends with Eddie James, assisted by Ashley Brison and Patricia Miller, who root that Love in Pentecostal Power.

In The Past Lane - The Podcast About History and Why It Matters
This week at In The Past Lane, the American History podcast, we look at a #MeToo incident from the Gilded Age. It involved a powerful congressman and a mistress he kept for ten years. But when he broke his promise to marry her, she did the unthinkable – she sued him for “breach of promise.” The scandal and subsequent trial captivated the nation. To explain how this young women took down a congressman, I speak with Patricia Miller about her new book, “Bringing Down The Colonel: A Sex Scandal of the Gilded Age, and the ‘Powerless’ Woman Who Took on Washington.” The #MeToo movement originated in 2007 when civil rights activist Tarana Burke coined the phrase to unite women who were victims of sexual violence. But it really took off in 2017 with revelations in the New York Times and New Yorker magazine about women coming forward to accuse film mogul Harvey Weinstein of sexual assault and rape. It has since gained increased momentum and legitimacy as more and more powerful men have been exposed for their abusive and often criminal behavior towards women. It’s quite common when stories of this magnitude make the news for journalists to look to the past for historical precedents. Think of the many stories about past financial scams that were written up in the wake of the Bernie Madoff scandal. Or past environmental disasters in the wake of the catastrophic B.P. Oil spill in 2010. Not surprisingly, the #MeToo movement has likewise elicited stories about sexual predators from the past, including re-examinations of the Clinton-Lewinsky affair and a renewed debate over filmmaker Roman Polansky who in 1977 pled guilty to raping a 13-year old girl and then fled the country to avoid prison. He’s continued to make films, several of which have been honored with Academy Awards. But as any good historian will tell you, one can always go much further back in time to find individuals and incidents that connect with our present. For example, have you ever heard of Elizabeth Jennings? Well, in 1854 – 101 years before Rosa Parks resisted a racist segregation policy on a Birmingham, Alabama bus, Elizabeth Jennings did much the same on a New York City streetcar. And like Parks, her resistance led to the desegregation of the city’s streetcars. Well, in this episode we meet Madeline Pollard, a young woman who in the 1890s stood up to the patriarchy and took down an abusive and exploitive congressman. Here to tell us more about it is Patricia Miller, author of the new book, Bringing Down The Colonel: A Sex Scandal of the Gilded Age, and the “Powerless” Woman Who Took on Washington. In the course of our conversation, Patricia Miller discusses: How women in the Gilded Age began to take on new roles, including the pursuit of higher education, entry into the paid workforce, and participation in a wide array of reform movements. How a 47-year old Kentucky lawyer and Congressman named Col. William Breckinridge began a sexual relationship with a 17-year old girl named Madeline Pollard. And how this relationship lasted a decade and produced two babies until it was exposed. Why the woman at the center of this story decided, despite the likelihood that she would be condemned as a gold-digging harlot, to go public in 1894 and sue Col. Breckinridge. How and why wealthy and socially prominent women supported Pollard in her lawsuit against Col. Breckinridge. How in the aftermath of the trial, women in Washington, DC and Kentucky successfully mobilized to bring about the political demise the Col. Breckinridge. Patricia Miller is an award-winning author and journalist. Her work on the interplay of politics and sexual morality has appeared in The Atlantic, Salon, The Nation, Huffington Post, and Ms. Magazine. She is with me today to talk about her first book, Bringing Down The Colonel: A Sex Scandal of the Gilded Age, and the “Powerless” Woman Who Took on Washington (Sarah Crichton Books, an imprint of Farrar, Straus and Giroux) Recommended reading: Patricia Miller, Bringing Down The Colonel: A Sex Scandal of the Gilded Age, and the “Powerless” Woman Who Took on Washington (Sarah Crichton Books, 2018). Episode 6: Ohio v. the Patriarchy (Madeline Pollard) Alex sits down with author Patricia Miller to discuss her hit new book, Bringing Down the Colonel. Miller’s novel tells the story of a sex scandal involving a young Cincinnati college student, Madeline Pollard, and a powerful Congressman, William Breckinridge that would grip the nation’s attention in the spring of 1894. I was very fortunate to be able to record this conversation with Dr Patricia Miller of McMaster University, in which we explored Pat’s extensive experience in researching, teaching and assessing reflection with physiotherapists. Her key messages in this conversation are that: Reflection is a key skill and activity for professional physiotherapists to improve practice. Studies have shown an individual’s quality and depth of reflection distinguishes novice from expert practitioners. Reflection is about seeking and exploring alternative perspectives and is supported by involving others (peers, mentors, tutors, family etc) and also by using a framework that challenges your thinking. She clarifies the difference between reflection in-action (during practice) and reflection on-action (after the event). The Canadian Physiotherapy Association Clinical Specialty Program includes the evaluation of the candidate’s ability to use clinical reflection in their practice because clinical reflection is integral to the practice of a clinical specialist and leader in their field. If you struggle with reflection or are embarking on a written reflection as part of your studies, for annual registration requirements or as part of the CPA Clinical Speciality Program I think you will both enjoy and benefit from listening to this enlightening conversation To find out more about Pat and connect with her see: Pat Miller’s ResearchGate profile https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Patricia_Miller6 Patricia Miller’s LinkedIn profile https://www.linkedin.com/in/pat-miller-291b0a39 Pat also refers to and recommended the following additional sources of information regarding reflection: Paterson C, Chapman J. Race, Religion and Reproductive Rights on the 2016 Campaign TrailAs the 2016 elections heat up across the country, things are heating up on State of Belief, Interfaith Alliance’s weekly radio show and podcast, as well (and not just because it’s 104 degrees in Welton’s home town of Monroe, LA). This week we check in with several experts about the religious dimensions of the race for the White House. Noted Catholic historian and author Patricia Miller will join us to talk about the latest fights in access to contraception and women’s health. Veteran religion journalist Kim Lawton of PBS Religion & Ethics Newsweekly shares her observations from the 2016 campaign trail. And theologian Rev. Dr. Susan Brooks Thistlethwaite comes back to talk to us about the #BlackLivesMatter movement and what it means for America’s religious and political landscape. Whatever Happened to Hobby Lobby? As religious conservatives sound the alarm about Planned Parenthood, the quieter fight over the contraceptive coverage included in the Affordable Care Act continues. While last year’s Hobby Lobby decision blew the law – and, with it, our constitutional understanding of religious freedom – the onslaught has continued from a range of religiously affiliated colleges, hospitals and organizations. But the fate of these cases in court, at least so far, just might surprise you. This week Welton’s joined by Patricia Miller a historian and author deeply familiar with Catholic doctrine and history and women’s health and contraception who will fill us in on these latest developments. Why Is This Election Different From All Other Elections? It feels like the 2016 election really launched last week with the first Republican Primary debate, and already religion is playing a controversial role. From candidates seeking an audience with the Southern Baptist Convention to Fox News asking politicians whether God speaks to them directly, there’s no escaping religion on the campaign trail. Tune in to hear veteran religion reporter Kim Lawton, managing editor and correspondent for PBS’ Religion & Ethics Newsweekly, discuss what she’s seen so far in this election, as well as the challenges and rewards of religion journalism more broadly. White America: What is Your Stake in Black Lives Matter Rev. Dr. Susan Brooks Thistlethwaite is a professor at Chicago Theological Seminary. She’s also one of our go-to guests when the trials our nation faces calls for a more sophisticated approach to theology. That approach is exactly what she offers in her latest piece at The Huffington Post, White America: What is Your Stake in Black Lives Matter? She’ll talk to Welton about the Black Lives Matter movement, and the vital connection between issues of race, gender – and the environment.
We introduced you to Patricia Miller of Matrix IV back in episode 26 and in today’s episode we’re going to do a deeper dive into the challenges and victories Patricia has faced as she’s taken over the reigns of her family’s ailing manufacturing company. The insights she shares as a former marketer from the biotech field, looking into the manufacturing industry for the first time, are very insightful and worth a listen. As Patricia Miller took over the reigns of her grandfather’s failing company she realized that she had her work cut out for her. The company was stuck in the 70s and had to pivot quickly or else it would die. Patricia took immediate steps to do a handful of vital things - 4 in fact - that she highlights in this episode of Making Chips. First on Patricia Miller’s list of advice for those in the manufacturing industry is the vital need to build community and connection within the industry. She did exactly that after taking over as leader of Matrix IV, going to conventions and local meetups, using the internet to get to know other influencers and leaders within the manufacturing industry, and working to not only be known, but to get to know others in the community for the sake of mutual support and help as the industry moves forward in a new era. Patricia’s marketing background comes into play as she looks at the way the manufacturing industry has traditionally done its own marketing - and she’s convinced that more time needs to be spent by company owners getting to know their market, asking their customers how they are doing at meeting their needs, how their needs are changing, and what they can do to better serve and enable their clients to achieve their business goals. Companies need to become more concerned with creating a positive experience for their customers and those who might use their services in the future. As Matrix IV began to re-grow under the leadership of its new CEO, Patricia Miller, many challenges and hurdles had to be overcome. Morale and company culture needed attention immediately, as did the discovery of new pools or niches of customers so that the business could continue on a solvent path. On top of all that, Patricia had to discover how to add much needed employees to get the company producing effectively while balancing a very meager budget at the same time. You’ll learn a lot from Patricia’s advice. All this and more on this episode of Making Chips! . Here’s the outline of part two of the conversation with Patricia Patricia Miller from Matrix IV - inheriting a family business after a successful marketing career in the corporate world. Through the eyes of a newbie - Patricia’s observations and advice to those who are in the manufacturing industry. The power of community and connections within the industry and how Patricia made connections within the manufacturing community after taking over the helm at Matrix IV. Why Patricia thinks it’s very important for manufacturers to truly understand their market, their clients, and how to create a positive position for them. The first steps Patricia took to understand her market and customers. The valuable presence and a path forward for the manufacturing industry in the U.S. Why change is a great ally for manufacturing companies. The first thing that had to change in her company when Patricia moved into the manufacturing industry. How the culture in Patricia’s company has changed as she’s implemented improvements. The challenges of adding employees to an older company. The roadblocks experienced as the company experienced its re-growing pains. What Patricia believes will be the next steps in the growth of Matrix IV. That’s what Patricia Miller’s professional associates told her when she started investigating the possibility of taking over her family business after she’d already pursued and been successful at a career that included marketing, corporate leadership, and politics. Put yourself in her shoes and you’ll probably understand why they said what they did. She’d already experienced many perks that manufacturing leaders seldom do. Travel, posh offices, important connections - yet, she says her heart and her home pulled her back to take over her grandfather’s failing manufacturing business. Welcome to Making Chips - THE podcast for manufacturing leaders and those involved in the manufacturing industry. Jim Carr and Jason Zenger bring you these shows week after week to help you keep on top of what’s happening in the manufacturing industry and to equip you to be the leader of your company as you desire to be. Today the guys are talking with Patricia Miller in what is likely part one of a two part conversation. Patricia’s story is anything but typical. Though she was surrounded by the world of manufacturing as a child, spending time around her grandparent’s very successful machine shop, she never felt a draw to be “in” the family business. Her parents encouraged her to pursue her dreams and she did exactly that. But when her grandfather retired and his health failed, Patricia was at a juncture in her own life where she was choosing her next step. Suddenly, the option of taking over her grandparent’s business was a very real possibility that she’d not considered before. In this episode of Making Chips you’re going to hear Patricia’s story of moving out of the corporate world to take over a manufacturing business that she admits was “stuck in the 70s” and on its last leg. It’s a story that testifies to the value and importance of long-time manufacturing operations and the leadership abilities of one amazing lady. Grab your coffee, turn up the volume, and join Jim, Jason, and their guest Patricia Miller, CEO of Matrix IV as they discuss the process of moving a old-school manufacturing business into the modern era. On this episode of Making Chips. . Here’s the outline of the conversation with Patricia The story of Matrix IV, beginning with Patricia’s grandfather and grandmother Patricia’s experience as a child being around the world of manufacturing Patricia’s education led her into corporate leadership, politics, pharmaceuticals, and everything BUT manufacturing Patricia’s opportunity to take over the leadership of Matrix IV and how she came to that decision The realization that the company was stuck in the 1970s and what Patricia did about it The first steps toward rejuvenating a tired, old business How 400% growth since Patricia’s arrival is spurring the business forward Links mentioned on this episode Patricia’s company - Matrix IV - http://www.matrixiv.com/ An article from “Plastics News” describing what Patricia has done with Matrix IV - http://www.plasticsnews.com/article/20141212/NEWS/141219962/new-leader-gives-molder-a-spark www.MakingChips.com - sign up for the Making Chips newsletter & podcast posts automatically (your information is never given to anyone else).
