On the sun-baked plains of Texas, cowpuncher Steve Brill, driven by crop failure and looming poverty, stumbles upon an ancient burial site shrouded in mystery. His neighbor, Juan Lopez, speaks of dark secrets and dire warnings passed down through generations. But Brill, desperate for any chance to change his fortunes, dismisses the ominous tales. As dusk settles over the lonely prairie, something stirs in the depths of the earth – something that bridges the Old World and the New, something that hungers.  Robert E. Howard's "The Horror from the Mound" blends frontier grit with supernatural dread, challenging the limits of human courage against forces older than the West itself.   Learn more about your ad choices. When Donald Trump and his co-defendants stand trial for allegedly trying to overturn Georgia's 2020 election, the public will be able to watch. Fulton County is the only jurisdiction that's indicted the former president on criminal charges where cameras are allowed in the courtroom.   Episode 12 of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution's “Breakdown” podcast — “The Trump Indictment” — features a lively debate between two lawyers who disagree on whether that's a good idea. Steve Brill founded Court TV and has been a vocal proponent of public access to judicial proceedings. Nick Ackerman is a former Watergate prosecutor who's an attorney in New York and wrote an essay in the New York Times arguing why cameras in the courtroom could lead to juror and witness intimidation.   The episode will also catch listeners up on the latest developments in the case - from Republicans seeking sanctions against Fulton DA Fani Willis to a peek at the witness list for the upcoming trial of Kenneth Chesebro and Sidney Powell. Going deep behind the scenes, NHL Backstory talks to the key people (including Steve Brill, Jordan Kerner, Shaun Weiss, Gary Bettman, Michael Eisner, Paul Kariya, Teemu Selänne and Jack Ferreira) and discover how a movie about some mischievous hockey brats morphed into an NHL team competing in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final. Dropping knowledge this week with some myths or misconceptions in fitness and holistic wellness industries! . Protein, fats, and carbs, oh my! Trying to eat healthily might feel like navigating a foreign land where you are unsure who to trust or which road to follow. Danielle discusses why research is necessary but listening to your body is best. . Paula discusses herbalism as a career path, what to expect from an herbalist, how long to store herbs, why green tea makes you jittery, and when foraging herbs or wild foods may become an issue. . An excellent application for foraging in your city is fallingfruit.org, a worldwide app where people list wild foods they have found, kind of like geocaching for herb nerds! . Unsurprisingly, The history of early American anti-foraging laws reveals that supporters of restricting foraging rights typically grounded their efforts in racism, classism, colonialism, imperialism, or some combination of these cruel practices and beliefs. . 1. Anti-Foraging Laws Targeting Native Americans . Native American tribes were probably the earliest victims of anti-foraging laws in the New World. Shortly after English settlers landed in the New World, they began pushing the Powhatan Native American tribe off their traditional hunting and foraging grounds. These settlers defended their newly occupied “property” with arms. As more and more white settlers arrived in America over generations, the foraging practices of many Native Americans—or, more specifically, their status as hunter-gatherers, as opposed to agricultural practitioners—was used to justify driving them from lands they had historically occupied. . 2. Anti-Foraging Laws Targeting African Americans . After the Civil War, plantation owners in the American South moved forcefully and systematically to restrict the foraging rights and practices of newly freed African American slaves. Many slaves freed after the Civil War understandably sought to leave farm work—and the farmers who had enslaved them—behind. As they had before the Civil War, freed slaves earned money by selling foods they foraged and hunted. In addition to income, foraging provided African Americans with some degree of self-sufficiency. . New York City parks officials have long taken a dim view of foragers in city parks. A forager caught in New York City could face fines of up to $250. However, the city has, in most cases, opted in favor of education and discouraging foragers over issuing fines. But there are exceptions, such as the 1986 arrest of Central Park forager Steve Brill. Brill, a New Yorker who goes by the moniker “Wildman,” was arrested in a sting operation carried out by city officials. Brill was arrested for leading paid foraging tours in New York City's Central Park. Brill's “crime” was described as “snatching and eating dandelion greens from the meadows of Central Park.” The city's parks commissioner at the time, Henry Stern, said he “couldn't stomach the idea of anyone ‘eating our parks.” Brill's arrest and subsequent trial was “a public relations debacle for the parks department” and made news in more than a dozen national and international newspapers. Ultimately, the city dropped the charges against Brill after he agreed to lead his foraging tours as an employee of the city's Parks Department, which he did for several years. . Mike and Kevin (Tommy is absent) take a #QuackQuestion from Brendan on just how exactly Wolf Stansson even reached the NHL. How does a player from Iceland even get discovered? They then stumble into how Wolf's recruiting of dual nationals led the the quick rise and fall of Icelandic hockey. Show Notes Thanks to Brendan (@bkshaughn) for the #QuackQuestion. Full text of the question: I know you guys have said on the pod that Russ's star turn in D2 was perhaps the greatest story in sports, but the fact that an Icelandic dude made it to the NHL is pretty fucking improbable as well. How the hell did that happen? Iceland was never good enough to field a team at the World Juniors, one of the main venues for assessing up-and-comers.  Obviously, there was no online footage to draw scouts there.  I have a couple theories: 1) A stubborn scout or GM was sick of the prevailing, Don Cherry-trademarked "European players are soft" notion at the time. They happened upon Wolf while on vacation or because of a delayed connecting flight, and they said "I'll see to it that this fucking kid ends that stupid misconception once and for all!" 2) A GM from that Don Cherry school of thought told his head of European scouting, "Find me some fucking players! And no more pansy-ass Swedes or Finns!" The scout has to look somewhere new in order to keep his job, and he thinks, "Why not Iceland? What do I have to lose?" What do you think? Anze Kopitar is like Wolf in the sense that he's the lone NHLer from a small country. In his case, he had to leave home early (at 16 I think?) to further his career. Did Wolf have to do the same? As for the end of his career, if you will indulge me: I don't think Wolf's actions were as bad as reported. I just think that he was a borderline NHLer, and there were very few (if any) team executives or teammates in his corner. If he were a better player or more popular in the locker room, he would've stuck in the league. I think, however, that he was at that weird, Ty Cobb level of competitiveness that runs beyond even what most NHLers are comfortable with. The only ones who roomed with him on the road were rookies, and they were forced to do so. Anyway, that's just my theory. What do you think? We talk about Wolf Stansson in Episode 117. For reference, the entire country of Slovenia is about the size of the city of Houston population-wise. One of Steve Brill's favorite kids: Brill mentions that he thought Vincent LaRusso was a young Steve McQueen in Part 1 of the interview. Kenan Thompson's IMDB says his first acting credit was D2.  Brill wanted a young Forest Whitaker. He got Kenan Thompson. We talked to D3 writer Jim Burnstein in Episode 52.  The IMDB page for D3 shows Burnstein and Brill sharing writing credit for the screenplay. That directing role Emilio got for doing a week's worth of work in D3 appears to be 'The War at Home', starring Emilio and his father, Charlie Sheen. It's at 60 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 76 percent rating from the audience.  In Time's oral history of the Mighty Ducks, Jeffrey Nordling, who ended up playing Ted Orion, said that the first Orion who washed out was Jimmy Sheridan. My guests for this episode are Violet Brill and her father “Wildman” Steve Brill. Violet and Steve are foragers from New York. Violet assists her father on his plant tours, leading groups of people and teaching them about wild edibles. “Wildman” Steve, in addition to his tours and workshops, is the author of multiple books on foraging including Identifying and Harvesting Edible and Medicinal Plants in Wild (and Not So Wild) Places, The Wild Vegan Cookbook, and Foraging with Kids. We use beginning foragers, including children, as the focus for this interview. We mostly discuss plants and mushrooms that are easy to identify and do not have any poisonous look-similars. We do include an example, which is wild carrot versus poison hemlock, to show that with care and a firm understanding of a plant you can identify and safely harvest edibles. We must pay attention however to do so. As this is part of the series on foraging and wild foods, once you've listened to this episode I recommend going back through the archives and listening to the other shows including those with Dan De Lion, Sam Thayer, and Arthur Haines. Together they will provide you with a well rounded perspective on how to come to a knowledge of plants in the wild. You can find out more about Violet and Steve at wildmanstevebrill.com. Also, if you have an iOS or Android smartphone, check out Wild Edibles and the Foraging Flashcard series. They are reasonably priced ways to begin learning more about wild plants wherever you are, and Wild Edibles is a go-anywhere field guide. This interview reminds me of the role that a teacher can play in building confidence for a student to explore further. It was a friend of mine who mentioned Steve during a conversation she and I were having about foraging plants to make wild teas, as she had taken a class from him. Going on a foraging trip like this can allow you to taste some of these wild foods in a safe way and begin to have an understanding of the plants, without just grabbing a field guide and just trying to go out to eat. You get that first experience and can then learn and research more before going out solo. So slow down, take a few classes, spend time with your field guides, and then get started on your own. I also like Steve's approach to not forcing Violet to share his diet, but allowing her to explore her options while ensuring that she eats good healthy foods along the way. I see this as also extending to the way we teach our children. Include them in your activities, but also include yourself in theirs and encourage and support them to pursue their own interests, or help them to find mentors and teachers who can. In this conversation Steve also provides solid simple encouragement to gradually begin eating this way. This reinforces slow and small solutions in all that we do, from dietary to landscape changes. Take a few bites of something, see whether you enjoy it or it causes a bit of upset, then decide whether more is right for you. Finally, there was Steve's story of Joe foraging for mushrooms and the importance of asking if we can harvest something. In the more specific sense, by contacting a landowner, but also by observing the plants around us and asking ourselves whether or not this is the right environment to harvest from. If there are only one or two plants, then perhaps we should leave them alone, or if they are rare encourage growth by dispersing seed and coming back in later years to see if there is enough to harvest. From a permaculture perspective one of the reasons I love foraging as an activity comes from my exploration of the environmental education writers such as David Orr or David Sobel. Both of them talk about establishing a sense of place, a connection to where we live. Rather than teaching children, or for that matter adults, about the plights of far off places, let us foster an understanding of our own bioregion and biome. Foraging is an active activity that gets us out into the world looking at what grows there. While trying to identify one plant, by slowly reading and integrating our field guides, we are likely to begin to recognize non-edible plants, as well as rare or interesting medicinals. We begin to know, understand, and then care for this space more fully by returning to nature and the wilder world, and in the process begin to rewild ourselves. From this conversation, next week is Peter Michael Bauer, of Rewild Portland, to discuss rewilding. We touch on that topic as the overarching theme, and also explore the impacts of civilization and how to prepare for the collapse we currently inhabit. It is a rather intense, but enjoyable, interview. If you haven't already you should join in the Traveling Permaculture Library Project by emailing your name and address to Matt Winters, who is the new librarian for the project. You can reach him at: librarian@thepermaculturepodcast.com By doing so you will receive a random book related to permacutlure, the natural world, and environment. This show, as I mention in the introduction to each show, is completely listener supported. So I need your help to keep the show on the air. The best way to do that right now is through recurring contributions with Patreon. Please sign up if you are able as all support is now on a monthly rather than per episode basis and you can become a patron of the podcast for as little as $1. That entry level support allows allows you to receive episodes early and without commercials. You won't hear announcements like this in the Patreon episodes, or from sponsors should I take any on. You can find out more about that, as well as where I'm at and what my goals are, at Patreon.com/permaculturepodcast If you are not in a place to give, I completely understand. My guest for this episode is Dan De Lion, a forager, teacher, and permaculture practitioner from New Jersey who runs the excellent website ReturnToNature.us. During our conversation today Dan and I discuss the intersection between foraging and gardening, cultivated foods and wild human nutrition, and how we can bring about a slow revolution by trading our time and money for our well-being and that of our community in a way that starves the more destructive elements of our culture of the nutrients it needs. That sounds like a lot to cover, and it is, but the pace is a steady and even one thanks to Dan's measured and thoughtful consideration of each point that we cover. You can find out more about Dan and his work at ReturnToNature.us. Check out his schedule of upcoming classes and if you get a chance, consider taking one. One of the points that stuck with me from this conversation is that we are all still members of the natural world, even as much as we feel separated from it at times. We can use foraging and permaculture to reconnect to natural systems and cycles by shifting our time and energy away from commercial production and consumer anesthetics to nourishing traditions of food and community. Along the way we can foster relationships with plants so that as much as we use them, they use us to scatter seed and disturb soil. As we improve our understanding of the natural world, by building up our mental database of plants, including their uses, we foster knowledge and ethics that allow us to move more intentionally through our actions which encourages ever slower and smaller solutions. As I mentioned during the interview, permaculture and the change necessary to make a lasting difference will take lifetimes and be delivered upon the generations we will never meet, but we must begin today if we haven't already. I'll be reposting Matt Winter's The Gift for release this Saturday, March 7 for folks to listen, as a reminder of the get rich slowly approach we should have when making design choices, including what it is we will put into our bodies as food or medicine. Living in a city doesn’t mean there aren’t tasty things to eat, you just have to know where to look.  Steve Brill tells us what’s edible in the big city. Urban foraging means finding wild foods.  Things like berries, herbs, seeds, mushrooms, and roots.  These are things humans have been eating for thousands of years.  They are delicious and filled with anti-oxidants.   And they’re free for the foraging.  Steve has been teaching urban foraging in New York City and the larger New York area for thirty years. Surprisingly, urban parks have more foragables than less dense areas.  In the city they only have to worry about lawn mowers which don’t reach everywhere.  In other areas, they have to contend with deer. Mushrooms are the thing people are most leery of eating.  Some mushrooms can be eaten safely but you have to be able to identify the safe ones.  Mushrooms that grow on wood and look like shelves are generally safe to eat but some are not very tasty.  Always consult a guide before eating anything you forage. Some of the things available right now in the North East are blackberries, carnelian cherries, lamb’s quarter, sorrel, and chicken mushrooms.  I’ve seen the berries and cherries in the park this week and I wasn’t even really looking.  I ate some too! If you wanted to get started on your own, begin with easily identifiable things like mulberries, dandelions, and cat tails.  You can eat cat tails!  You can’t buy mulberries because they are so perishable so the only way to get them is to find your own. There is a park full of free food just waiting for you to harvest it.  Free and healthy, food doesn’t get much better than that.
