Benjamin Sauter is a partner at Kobre and Kim, a legal firm that specializes in International Disputes and Investigations. The firm prides itself on its aggressive, trial-ready approach. Ben's role is to aggressively defend clients in the cryptocurrency and blockchain industries against high-stakes government enforcement actions.  Why you should listen: Ben and his colleagues wrote a piece for Brave New Coin called The U.S. govt is aggressively prosecuting crypto cases - how to defend yourself. The article summary reads: Thinking Beyond The Government Playbook - how crypto holders can proactively plan for and respond to aggressive U.S. Government enforcement tactics. Ben says the high level takeaway is that U.S. prosecutors are becoming increasingly aggressive in their attempts to police digital asset markets — and more creative in their ability to follow through. Recent events highlight the ability of prosecutors not only to collect actionable intelligence about digital assets, but also to use that information to achieve law enforcement objectives across international borders. By recognizing these tactics and acting proactively, individuals with digital-asset wealth can reduce the risk of falling afoul of the authorities.  With U.S. prosecutors adopting an aggressive approach towards enforcement against cryptocurrency market players, companies and individuals who are concerned that they may be the target of a government investigation should prepare to mount a creative defense. That means hiring counsel who understands criminal defense and trial strategy, and the technical issues raised by digital asset holdings, including blockchain forensics, and asset forfeiture procedures. Welcome to the radio magazine that brings you news, commentary and analysis from a Black Left perspective. I’m Margaret Kimberley, along with my co-host Glen Ford. Coming up: There are many obstacles to Black American liberation. We’ll speak with a young writer and activist who says one of the primary impediments to a more powerful liberation movement is the Black elite, whose main goal is to prosper under capitalism. And, we’ll take a look at the life and work of Audre Lorde, the poet and Black feminist thinker. But first – Transgender people attempting to migrate to the United States have a difficult time, especially if they’re Black. A young woman who goes by the name Deborah “A” is a national organizer for the Black LGBTQIA+ Migrant Project – or, “BLMP,” for short. Deborah “A” says the BLMP works through regional networks across the country. That was Deborah “A”, of the Black LGBTQIA+ Migrant Project. It’s bad enough that Black liberation movements have always encountered massive white American hostility, but elite sectors of Black America have often opposed mass Black street action. Kandist Mallett is a columnist for Teen Vogue magazine. She’s author of a recent column titled, “The Black Elite Are an Obstacle Toward Black Liberation.” That was writer and activist Kandist Mallet. Jack Turner is a professor of political science at the University of Washington, and co- editor of the book, “African American Political Thought: A Collected History.” Turner’s contribution to that collection is a chapter titled, “Audre Lorde’s Politics of Difference.” It’s a rich subject. Audre Lorde was an important Black poetic and feminist luminary who was New York State Poet Laureate in the last years of her life. Professor Turner says Lorde clashed directly with President Reagan when the U.S. invaded the Caribbean nation of Grenada, in 1983. Professor Jack Turner, speaking from the University of Washington. Gavin Grey: UK takes another small step out of Covid lockdown

Britain is taking another small step out of lockdown as it looks nervously at a new virus surge inundating its European neighbours. With U.K. coronavirus vaccination rates outstripping those of European Union nations, Prime Minister Boris Johnson is easing the stark "stay at home" message that has curtailed everyday life — and kept the virus in check — for almost three months. From Monday, it will be replaced in England with a message to stay local. People will be allowed to meet in groups of six outdoors and can resume outdoor sports such as basketball, tennis and golf. The other parts of the U.K. — Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland — are taking broadly similar steps. In Wales, thousands of people poured onto beaches and mountain spots on Saturday, after the authorities lifted travel restrictions that have been in place since December. Most nonessential businesses remain closed, along with pubs, restaurants, gyms, cinemas, theatres, museums and sports stadiums. Millions of workers have been furloughed, with the government paying the bulk of their wages. The U.K. has recorded more than 126,000 COVID-19 deaths, the highest toll in Europe.Stephen Powis, medical director of the National Health Service in England, urged people to continue to follow the rules and limit contact with others, saying the easing "does not mean job done.""We've made enormous progress that we need to build on and not squander the gains we've made," he wrote in the Sunday Telegraph newspaper. The stringent restrictions in business and social life imposed during three lockdowns in the past year have had broad public support, though they have alarmed some lawmakers in Johnson's Conservative Party, who argue that the economic, democratic and human costs outweigh the benefits. While many European nations are seeing a new surge in the pandemic, Britain is counting on a rapid mass-vaccination program to help it end its lockdown. More than 30 million people — 57% of all U.K. adults — have received a first dose of vaccine so far, the government announced Sunday. Almost 7% of adults have had both doses.Britain aims to give everyone over 18 a first jab by July, with second shots delivered within 12 weeks of the first.Health officials say the program will slow down in April because of a squeeze on supplies, in part because of a delayed order from India. The EU has also threatened to block shipments of vaccines from factories in the bloc unless drugmakers — notably Anglo-Swedish firm AstraZeneca — send more shots to EU nations. Some European politicians, under fire for their slow vaccine programs, say Britain has failed to export any vaccine doses to the continent, while millions have gone the other way. Britain disputes that characterization, saying vaccines have complex supply chains and some ingredients in Europe's shots are made in the U.K.British Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden said the government was confident it would hit its vaccination targets. He said the first doses of a vaccine made by U.S. firm Moderna would arrive in Britain in April, joining the AstraZeneca and Pfizer-BioNTech shots."We're confident we'll be able to deliver it and we are confident that it won't require mixing the vaccines," Dowden told the BBC.Under the government's "road map" to lifting lockdown, shops, hairdressers and outdoor dining in England are to reopen on April 12, followed by indoor venues on May 17. Remaining restrictions are to end June 21, if the country isn't facing a new virus surge.Anthony Harnden, deputy chair of Britain's Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunization, said it was vital that people who had received a vaccine shot remained cautious."It's really important that people who are vaccinated can remember that they aren't completely protected," he told the BBC."They're protected against severe disease, hospitalization and death, but they might not be protected against infection after one dose, it takes three or four weeks for the vaccine ef...

President Donald Trump's startling COVID-19 diagnosis serves as a cruel reminder of the pervasive spread of the coronavirus and shows how tenuous of a grip the nation has on the crisis, health experts said. With U.S. infections rising for several weeks, Trump was one of about 40,000 Americans who learned they had tested positive  when he broke the news early Friday. The president went through a "very concerning" period Friday and the next 48 hours "will be critical" for his care, White House chief of staff Mark Meadows said Saturday. It was dramatically different than the rosy assessment from Trump's staff and doctors, who took pains not to reveal the president had received supplemental oxygen at the White House before he went to a military hospital. Some of Trump's top advisers and allies also have tested positive recently."No one is entirely out of the virus's reach, even those supposedly inside a protective bubble," said Josh Michaud, associate director of global health policy with the Kaiser Family Foundation in Washington.Eight months after the virus first reached the United States, worrying signals mounted of what's ahead this fall. The NFL has postponed two games after players on three teams have tested positive. Some hospitals in Wisconsin have run low on space, and experts warned of a likely surge in infections during the colder months ahead. Some economists say it could take as long as late 2023 for the job market to fully recover. The U.S. leads the world in numbers of confirmed infections, with more than 7 million, and deaths, with more than 208,000. Only a handful of countries rank higher in COVID-19 deaths per capita."The statistics are so mindboggling, they make us numb to the reality of just how painful, unacceptable and absurd this is," said Dr. Reed Tuckson, board chairman of the nonpartisan Health Policy Alliance in Washington. "Every single American must double down on their vigilance. If we don't, then we are being foolhardy and irresponsible."Wallace Clark, 50, of Springfield, Illinois, said he was flummoxed by the president's diagnosis but hopes it makes other people realize that they need to take the pandemic seriously. "Some people probably think they're immune or can't get it, but it is possible. It does send a message," Clark said Saturday as he put on a face covering before entering a health club. The president's infection occurred as the nation has reached a crossroads in its response to the virus. The U.S. is averaging 40,000 cases a day. The situation is improving in Sun Belt states that were hot spots in the summer — months after states reopened in May and gatherings during the Memorial Day and July Fourth holidays fueled a surge in infections, hospitalizations and deaths. Many of those states took action this week to loosen restrictions. Mississippi's governor ended a mask requirement, South Carolina's governor said he would ease capacity restrictions on restaurants and New Orleans bars were given the greenlight to sell carry-out drinks. Florida has moved ahead with an aggressive reopening that gives bars and restaurants latitude to allow as many customers as they choose. The outlook is gloomier in the Midwest.Wisconsin reported a record daily death toll Wednesday, and hospitals in multiple cities said they were running out of space. A 530-bed field hospital that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built on the state fairgrounds in the city of West Allis in April could be put to use if the situation worsens.Iowa reported more than 1,000 new cases for the third consecutive day Friday as the virus continued to aggressively spread in many regions of the state. South Dakota health officials reported record highs in deaths and cases Thursday. In Missouri, Gov. Mike Parson, a Republican who allowed the state to reopen in mid-June, was diagnosed with COVID-19 on Sept. 23. MUSIC - ~11 sec – instrumental This week, we feature a Blacksburg, Va., musician’s song that sets the stage for thinking about significant water resources issues.  Have a listen for about 45 more seconds. MUSIC - ~48 sec – Lyrics: Whatcha gonna do when the river runs dry? When there’s no more water in your well? You won’t know when to give it that one last try; You won’t be warned before the final bell. [I'm] takin’ it on the way, takin’ it on the way. Whatcha gonna do when the river runs dry?” You’ve been listening to part of “River Runs Dry,” by Kat Mills, accompanied by Rachel Handman, on the 2003 album “Long Time.”  As noted in a previous Virginia Water Radio episode featuring this music, the river in the song symbolizes the inspirations and sources of creativity on which Ms. Mills depends in her life and work.  But the song’s questions about what to do if the river or well goes dry provide inspiration for considering the challenges of actual water.  For example, water is a factor in three of the top worldwide risks over the next ten years cited in the non-partisan World Economic Forum’s “Global Risks Report” for 2020.  Those three are a water-availability crisis, climate change, and extreme weather. With U.S. national elections fast approaching, this Labor Day week offers a good time to consider some national and global water resources challenges awaiting the next president, Congress, and other federal officials.  If Virginia Water Radio could interview the presidential candidates, here are eight questions we’d ask, generated from various sources. 1. What water bodies should be regulated as part of the Waters of the United States under the federal Clean Water Act? 2. What are your plans for addressing the nation’s water-related infrastructure needs? 3. What should the federal government do regarding groundwater quantity and quality issues around the country? 4. What’s needed for all citizens to have access to adequate, safe drinking water? 5. What are your positions on climate change? And 6. What international water issues concern you? We end this episode with a question for you listeners: how, if at all, does water factor into your voting decisions this fall? Thanks to Kat Mills for permission to use this week’s music, and we close with about 25 more seconds of “River Runs Dry.” MUSIC - ~26 sec – Lyrics: “Whatcha gonna do when the river runs dry? I guess I'll have to pack up and leave my home.” SHIP’S BELL Virginia Water Radio is produced by the Virginia Water Resources Research Center, part of Virginia Tech’s College of Natural Resources and Environment.  For more Virginia water sounds, music, or information, visit us online at virginiawaterradio.org, or call the Water Center at (540) 231-5624.  Thanks to Ben Cosgrove for his version of “Shenandoah” to open and close the show.  In Blacksburg, I’m Alan Raflo, thanking you for listening, and wishing you health, wisdom, and good water. America has been at war since the fall of 2001. There is no end in sight in Afghanistan, Mesopotamia and the Levant, and beyond. What political and strategic disincentives have stalled Washington's ability to responsibly end its involvement in these wars under Republican and Democratic administrations? After spraying down our studio with grain alcohol to kill the virus afflicting the world (Everclear is the unofficial sponsor of this episode, as is an excellent northern Italian vineyard called Paltrinieri), we convened a great group to grapple with the forever wars: Paul Miller of Georgetown, Sarah Kreps of Cornell, and Will Ruger of the Charles Koch Institute and Foundation.    Further reading: Paul Miller, Withdrawal Deadlines in War (Atlantic Council, 2020) Sarah Kreps, Taxing Wars: The American Way of War Finance and the Decline of Democracy (Oxford University Press, 2018) Will Ruger, "With U.S. Strategy on the Rocks, We Are Supporting Fresh Perspectives Fresh Perspectives in Foreign Policy," War on the Rocks Paul Miller, "How Does Jihadism End? Today's conversation was sparked by the excellent piece penned by today’s guest, Victor Haghani, back in November of this year: There's No Place Like Home: The Case For And Against Extreme Home Bias In Equity Investing. With U.S. equities outperforming their international counterparts by as much as 170% over the past decade, it's no wonder that surveys show that U.S. investors typically allocate as much as 80-85% of the equity portion of their portfolios to U.S. domiciled stocks, a condition Victor refers to as "extreme home bias". In the aforementioned article, Victor lays out 10 different arguments investors often make in favor of "extreme home bias", and then debunks them one by one. During our conversation, we take a step back and start by evaluating the evidence for being properly "globally" diversified. We then get into some of the arguments Victor lays out against "extreme home bias", trying to stress test them where we can. Finally, we end with a discussion of the specific ETFs Victor and his partner James White use in constructing properly diversified portfolios - both for their clients and themselves. Show Notes: 2:30 - Why do "long-form" research? You never learn anything as well as when you have to "teach" it 5:00 - Dynamic vs. static asset allocation: Establishing a baseline for global allocations 7:30 - How to allocate a portfolio globally: Getting specific 12:00 - Discussion of "Home Bias" issues 13:30 - How much should momentum be applied to country ownership allocations? 16:15 - How much should expected returns be applied to country ownership allocations? 21:30 - How does geopolitical risk factor in to allocations? 25:00 - Why isn't "invest in what you know" relevant for international investing (or possibly ever)? 31:30 - Breaking down the data: Historical returns from home biased vs. globally diversified portfolios 36:00 - Why shouldn't US investors limit themselves to just dollars? Currency hedged equity funds. 43:30 - 9 basis points: Expense ratios on international index funds are now negligible   48:00 - Specific ETF suggestions for building low-cost, globally diversified portfolios: (VXUS), (VT), (VGK), (VPL), (VWO), (IEMG), (IEUR), (IPAC) ETF to avoid: (EEM) and its 67 basis point expense ratio

How just is the criminal justice system? With U.S. crime rates continuing a decades-long decline but incarceration rates remaining at the highest level of any country in the world, it’s a question more and more people are beginning to confront.  On this edition of In Depth, we speak with Emily Bazelon, who is a staff writer for The New York Times Magazine and teaches at Yale Law School. Her new book -- "Charged: The New Movement to Transform American Prosecution and End Mass Incarceration" -- places prosecutors at the center of the story of American mass incarceration, arguing that their power to determine charges and decide plea deals has meant that their influence is often greater than even that of the judges they face in court. We discuss this claim as well as her in depth reporting on the high stakes dramas that unfold each day in America's courtrooms.  Host: KCBS Radio reporter Keith Menconi

Last Born In The Wilderness

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 8, 2019 74:16

[Intro: 11:10] In this collaborative interview with [RS], we speak with Yoav Litvin, doctor of psychology, photographer, and writer. Yoav's work focuses on the roots of the ideology of Zionism, in particular how trauma has informed its formation and practice, through the policies and actions of the State of Israel, and through such powerful organizations like AIPAC (American Israel Public Affairs Committee) — "a lobbying group that advocates pro-Israel policies to the Congress and Executive Branch of the United States."   In this discussion, Yoav expounds on his views and deep research into the settler-colonialist and supremacist roots of Zionism, not only from a socio-historical perspective, but from a neurological and psychological perspective as well. How has a collectivized form of post-traumatic stress disorder shaped the genocidal policies of the State of Israel, especially toward the Palestinian people and land that the State of Israel has been literally built upon? As Yoav gets into his piece in Monthly Review Online: “In response to antisemitism, Zionists embraced their fear and contempt of their abusers to produce defensive aggression, reinventing identity in a reactionary attempt to ensure survival and restore pride. The reward of violence–power-quickly enticed Zionist leaders to morph what began as a defensive strategy into an offensive one that culminated with a settler colonialist vision of a homeland in Palestine at the expense of its Indigenous population, the existing Palestinian people.”* Along with addressing the trauma Jewish populations have individually and collectively experienced, we ask Yoav to explain the conflation between legitimate criticism of the policies Israel and Zionism with antisemitism in general. This conflation is done primarily to obscure the real and existing genocidal policies of the State of Israel towards the Palestinian people, with the direct backing of the United States government. With U.S. politicians like Rep. Ilhan Omar coming under intense pressure to apologize for her accurate criticisms AIPAC's influence in U.S. politics, the conflation between antisemitism and criticism of Zionism is no accident. It's specifically intended to shut down rightful protest and criticism of Zionism as an ideology and as a settler-colonialist project, which has lead to one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world to date (e.g. the Gaza Strip and the West Bank). Yoav Litvin is an Israeli-American doctor of psychology, a photographer and writer. In his work, he investigates the intersections of science, the arts and politics and aims to promote creative and radical causes with a focus on urban culture, social movements and peoples. Litvin’s work has been featured in Truthout, Al Jazeera English, Mother Jones, Mondoweiss, and more. *http://bit.ly/2OEgJrE Episode Notes: - Learn more about Yoav’s work: https://yoavlitvin.com - Read his article at Monthly Review Online: http://bit.ly/2OEgJrE - Read his recent piece in Truthout: http://bit.ly/2FR4VzE - Follow Yoav on Twitter: https://twitter.com/nookyelur - The songs featured in this episode are “Slow Country” (instrumental) and “Double Bass” by Gorillaz from their self-titled album. We’ve had plenty of questions rolling in from the ProfitBoss community, so now is a perfect opportunity to host another installment of #AskHillary! I’ll give my best thoughts on handling our parents’ money mindset, understanding the DOW Jones index, and several specific tax and retirement savings options. I will also tackle how to make the most of student loans, and how to save for life’s big adventures.     Since we have adventure on our minds, I think now is a perfect opportunity to talk about Travel Rewards. With U.S. airlines expected to carry more than 600 million passengers on domestic flights this year and credit card debt levels exploding, we can expect airfare savings to be increasingly important in the months ahead.   Jill Gonzales is going to fill us in on how to make smart decisions about choosing a frequent flyer program. You will learn the difference between a frequent flyer program and a rewards credit card, and then understand just how the WalletHub study was done. There is a lot of useful information in this episode, so be prepared to take notes!   What You Will Learn in This Episode: To help travelers make the best decisions for their wallets, the personal-finance website WalletHub today released its report on 2018’s Best Frequent Flyer Programs, which ranks the 10 largest domestic airlines based on 23 key metrics, ranging from the value of a point/mile to blackout dates for rewards flights. WalletHub’s report also features a custom calculator that allows users to personalize the results based on their own budgets. You can find a few highlights from those results below.   Delta SkyMiles is the best frequent flyer program for the third straight year.    The average airline rewards program gives frequent flyers 12% off their airline spending. And they’re all free to join.     Hawaiian Airlines offers the most rewards value to frequent flyers ($19.95 per $100 spent), with Alaska Airlines coming in a close second ($19.87 per $100 spent).    Four of the 10 largest airlines are offering more rewards in 2018 than in 2017, sweetening the pot by an average of 20%.    Delta Air Lines and JetBlue Airways are the only two major airlines whose miles do not expire because of inactivity.    The Frontier Airlines Credit Card and the Lufthansa Credit Card are 2018’s best airline credit cards, according to WalletHub’s editors.    For the full report, including the custom calculator, please visit:  https://wallethub.com/edu/best-frequent-flyer-program/25943/   Resources The Seven Stages of Money Maturity

With U.S. President Donald Trump writing executive orders outlining his intent to build a wall along the Mexican border and banning all travelers from a number of muslim countries in recent weeks, there seems no better time to talk about migrant detention. It’s under that backdrop that Tings Chak, the writer and artist behind a new graphic novel called Undocumented: The Architecture of Migrant Detention, comes to Speech Bubble.Published by our friends at Ad Astra Comix, Undocumented analyzes how architecture and design are used to reinforce the agenda of the state. Tings explains how she got involved with migrant detention, her own experience with racism as an immigrant herself and why a comic was the best medium to bring attention to this issue. In so doing, she deconstructs the myths of Canadian multiculturalism and puts in fine relief that inhumane policies in regards to immigration are just as prevalent in this country as they are in the U.S., even with Justin Trudeau at the helm.Undocumented.caAd Astra Comix@t_ingsEpisode Sponsor: Hairy Tarantula
