Want an easier way to run big data applications in the cloud? Introducing Amazon EMR Serverless, a new deployment option in Amazon EMR that makes it easy for data analysts and engineers to run open-source big data analytics frameworks such as Apache Spark and Apache Hive without configuring, managing, and scaling clusters or servers. EMR Serverless automatically scales resources up and down to provide just the right amount of capacity for your application. You pay only for what you use and you can minimize concerns about over- or under-provisioning. In this episode, Radhika Ravirala (Principal Product Manager) and Natacha Maheshe (Principal Product Marketing Manager) join Hawn to discuss EMR Serverless use cases, how EMR Serverless addresses customers challenges, and how you can started. On The Cloud Pod this week, everyone's favorite guessing game is back, with the team making their predictions for AWS Summit and re:Inforce — which were not canceled, as they led us to believe last week. A big thanks to this week's sponsors: Foghorn Consulting, which provides full-stack cloud solutions with a focus on strategy, planning and execution for enterprises seeking to take advantage of the transformative capabilities of AWS, Google Cloud and Azure. JumpCloud, which offers a complete platform for identity, access, and device management — no matter where your users and devices are located. This week's highlights
Once again Arjen, Jean-Manuel, and Guy discuss the latest and greatest announcements from AWS in this roundup of the news of May. Also once again, this was recorded 2 months before it went up, but luckily it's all still relevant. Even the comments about being in lockdown. News Finally in Sydney
On The Cloud Pod this week, with the first half of the year full of less-than-ideal events, the team is looking forward to another next six months of less-than-ideal events. Also, everyone is excited to see how they can manipulate the AWS BugBust Challenge for a free ticket to re:Invent. This week's highlights AWS launches the BugBust Challenge in the hopes of finding and fixing 1 million bugs. The challenge aims to help developers improve code quality, eliminate bugs and boost application performance while saving millions of dollars in application resource costs. Google has announced new features for Cloud Monitoring Grafana plugins. The new features include popular dashboard samples, more effective troubleshooting with deep links, better visualizations through precalculated metrics and more powerful analysis capabilities. Azure VM Image Builder service is now generally available. Image Builder will make it easier to build custom Linux or Windows virtual machine images. Amazon Web Services: Does Not Have Bugs AWS announces the world's first global competition to find and fix 1 million software bugs. We don't think they're referring to Amazon bugs, just software bugs in general. AWS launches customized images for Amazon EMR on Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service. If you're looking to reduce the time it takes to build images, that's a good thing: otherwise it's a fully managed service, so we're not sure that users will care. Amazon announces new Java Detectors and CI/CD Integration with GitHub Actions for CodeGuru Reviewer. We're amazed by how quickly GitHub Actions is being adopted. AWS acquires communication technology company Wickr. We want to know why Amazon is buying this: maybe they're trying to enhance their enterprise and public sector application suites. AWS now supports container images to simplify continuous integration tasks. Continuing to build the ecosystem around serverless applications is a smart move by AWS. Google Cloud Platform: Smart Player Google announces that a new public dataset for Google Trends is now available for preview. This is really cool. Google introduces a new Tau VM family that extends Compute Engine's VM offerings. If you're using some of the older VM classes, this is a reminder to check out the new ones that could save you money. Google announces a new version of Transfer Appliance for the US, EU and Singapore regions. It's new and improved — they just haven't told us how. Google announces new features for Cloud Monitoring Grafana plugins. Grafana is one of our favourite visualization tools so this is great. Google launches three security and scalability improvements for Cloud SQL for SQL Server. This is a smart play: these capabilities will help differentiate Google's product offering through improved performance. Azure: Gives You Ingestion Azure introduces the Ingestion Client for Azure Speech. Getting a full-blown scalable and secure transcription pipeline is great, but we really don't like the name. Azure VM image builder service is now generally available. We've found a customer who is able to pay Hashicorp to update to Go. Azure has built a cloud adoption framework for retail. We hope they extend this beyond the Azure lens: it should tie back into the much larger digital transformation story for the sector. Azure has partnered with Red Hat to offer Red Hat JBoss EAP on the Azure App Service. It's nice to see digital app services available from Microsoft. TCP Lightning Round Justin stuns everyone with his multimedia power move so takes this week's point, leaving scores at Justin (11), Ryan (5), Jonathan (8), Peter (1). Other Headlines Mentioned: Expansion of the public preview of on-demand disk bursting for Premium SSD to more regions AWS DevOps Monitoring Dashboard solution v1.1 adds support for AWS CodeBuild and AWS CodePipeline related metrics CloudWatch adds 14 new Metric math functions Amazon DocumentDB (with MongoDB compatibility) Now Supports r5.8xlarge and r5.16xlarge Instances Configure GitHub Actions workflows with a new GitHub Action for building serverless applications AWS Control Tower announces accessibility, console and performance improvements AWS Client VPN launches desktop client for Linux AWS Lambda now supports SASL/PLAIN authentication for functions triggered from self-managed Apache Kafka Google joins the O-RAN Alliance to advance telecommunication networks Things Coming Up Announcing Google Cloud 2021 Summits [frequently updated] State of FinOps Update — July 8 (virtual) Amazon re:Inforce — August 24–25 — Houston, TX Google Cloud Next 2021 — October 12–14, 2021 AWS re:Invent — November 29–December 3 — Las Vegas Oracle Open World (no details yet)

A big thanks to this week's sponsors: Foghorn Consulting, which provides full-stack cloud solutions with a focus on strategy, planning and execution for enterprises seeking to take advantage of the transformative capabilities of AWS, Google Cloud and Azure. This week's highlights Amazon is catering to the unimaginative with its version of a vanilla milkshake. Google now performs commitment ceremonies but they come at a cost. Azure did an online pastry course and can now make croissants. General News: La France Est Méconnaître Amazon (France Is Ignoring Amazon) VMware picks longtime executive Raghuram as its new CEO. So many people were overlooked for this position. France says Google and Microsoft Cloud Services are OK for storing sensitive data. Bit of a snub for Amazon. Amazon Web Services: Busy Little Bees AWS SaaS Boost released as open source. Sounds more like a product than it actually is. AWS announces general availability of AWS Application Migration Service. If play is to lift and shift, with no thought of transformation at all, this is for you. AWS CloudFormation Guard 2.0 is now generally available. It's great that this supports more than just cloud transformation. AWS Premium Support launches Support Automation Workflows (SAW). This will make the exchange of data so much easier. Amazon Elasticsearch Service announces a new lower-cost storage tier. This is great news for everybody. Amazon announces the release of EKS 1.20 — the raddest release ever. AWS launches another way to run containers with App Runner. Just in case you don't want to use one of the other billion container services. Google Cloud Platform: Here To Confuse You Google will bring Starlink satellite connectivity to enterprises in late 2021. Cool! Google is offering new committed use discounts for Cloud Run. Commit yourself to Google. Google is announcing several new ways to ensure your Cloud Run environment is secure. Thumbs up! Enhance DDoS protection and get predictable pricing with Google's new Cloud Armor service. Making this a per customer thing doesn't make a huge amount of sense. Google launches new managed machine learning platform Vertex AI. A very powerful release. Google releases LaMDA to improve conversation technology for chat bots. Not to be confused with AWS Lambda… Google launches the next generation of its custom AI chips. But it's not ready yet. Azure: Viva La France! Microsoft to upgrade cloud products' data controls in European Union. Lots of interesting use cases for this one. Microsoft is shutting down its Azure Blockchain service on September 10, 2021. We'll help you — it will only cost you a suitcase full of cash and a helicopter. Azure Static Web Apps is now generally available. Static is great until you want to have any type of interaction. TCP Lightning Round Justin exacts his revenge on Ryan for stealing his jokes last week and takes this week's point, leaving scores at Justin (8), Ryan (4), Jonathan (7). On The Cloud Pod this week, the team is feeling nostalgic and a little nerdy, as you can see from the show title — a throwback to Serial Console and its ability to add a ton of characters when you didn't want it to. A big thanks to this week's sponsors: Foghorn Consulting, which provides full-stack cloud solutions with a focus on strategy, planning and execution for enterprises seeking to take advantage of the transformative capabilities of AWS, Google Cloud, and Azure. This week's highlights Amazon should be singing a different tune. Google has astonished us all by actually sharing something interesting. Azure is the strict school principal that just canceled lunch. General News: Justin Said It First VentureBeat predicts industry clouds could be the next big thing. Justin will take the royalties check anytime, VentureBeat. Amazon Web Services: Please Don't Keep It To Yourself Red Hat OpenShift Service on AWS is now generally available. Surprising because we don't remember it going into beta. AWS Distro for OpenTelemetry adds StatsD and Java support. We're glad to see the continued investment in OpenTelemetry. AWS DevOps Monitoring Dashboard solution is now generally available. The solutions library is a Rube Goldberg machine. Amazon Lookout for Metrics is now generally available — perfect for Ryan, who has no machine learning experience. Amazon Elasticsearch Service announces a new Auto-Tune feature for improved performance and application availability. We wish Amazon would open source this. AWS SSO credential profile support is now available in the AWS Toolkit for VS Code. Thank you, Jesus. Amazon is developing a chip to power the hardware switches that shuttle data around networks. Apparently Google and Apple are also doing this. Troubleshoot boot and networking issues with new EC2 Serial Console. Must be useful for someone, maybe the people using enclaves? Google Cloud Platform: Blame Active Directory Google wants customers to rethink their cloud migration strategy. Actually quite an interesting blog post — no, this is not sarcasm! Google BigQuery was named a leader in the 2021 Forrester Wave: Cloud Data Warehouse. We actually agree with this; it really is a great product. Google announces Cloud SQL for SQL Server now comes with Active Directory authentication. Helpful only if you are on GCP Active Directory. Azure: Pay To Play Azure has released several new compliance management capabilities to the Azure Security Center. We think this is really, really cool. Microsoft named a leader in the 2021 Forrester Wave: Function-as-a-Service Platforms. Congratulations to Microsoft. TCP Lightning Round Justin cuts through the awkward silence and takes this week's point, leaving scores at Justin (4), Ryan (3), Jonathan (5). Big data and analytics play a critical role in every organization’s digital transformation. For many customers, it’s the first initiative they embark on to accelerate time to insight and pace of innovation for their business. Today, Simon is joined by Roy Hasson, Sr. Manager WW Analytics Specialist, to talk about how customers can modernize on-premises, self-managed Apache Hadoop environments running Apache Hive and Apache Spark using Amazon EMR - a fully managed, easy to use, unified analytics platform to run your Hive, Spark, Presto and other big data and ML workloads. They also discuss the EMR Migration Program, developed to help customers quickly modernize their on-premises, self-managed Hadoop environments.
re:Invent arrived, and with it came a lot of announcements. Some meh, some good, some great. In this episode Arjen, Jean-Manuel, Guy, and special guest star Rob will do their best to make sense of it. Or maybe they just make it more confusing? Who knows? Our brains can't really handle the number of announcements. Which is probably also why it took far too long to edit this episode. J.T. Wolohan is the author of "Mastering Large Datasets with Python," a book that helps Python developers adopt functional programming styles in their their project prototyping, in other to scale up towards big data projects. Greg Nokes, a Master Technical Architect with Heroku, initiates their conversation by lying out what Python is and what it's being used for. As a high-level scripting language, Python was primarily used by sysadmins as a way to quickly manipulate data. Over the years, an ecosystem of third-party packages have manifested around scientific and mathematical approaches. Similarly, its web frameworks have shifted towards asynchronous flows, allowing developers to ingest data, process them, and handle traffic in more efficient ways. J.T.'s book is all about how to move from small datasets to larger ones. He lays out three stages which every project goes through. In the first phase, a developer can solve a problem on their individual PC. This stage typically deals with datasets that are manageable, and can be processed with the compute hardware on hand. The second phase is one in which you still have enough compute power on your laptop to process data, but the data itself is too large. It's not unreasonable for machine learning corpus to reach five terabytes, for example. The third phase proposed is one where an individual developer has neither the compute resources to process the data nor the disk space to store it. In these cases, external resources are necessary, such as cluster computing and some type of distributed data system. J.T. argues that by exercising good programming practices in the first phase, the third "real world" phasing will require little modification of your actual data processing algorithms. Links from this episode "Mastering Large Datasets with Python" teaches you to write code that can handle datasets of any size Amazon EMR is a popular way to parallelize data processing in the cloud

AWS Data Exchange makes it easy to find, subscribe to, and use third-party data in the cloud. Simon speaks with Ravi Tulapati to explore how data providers can now reach new AWS audiences, how analysts, researchers, and other data buyers can easily find and subscribe to data sets, and how the billing and delivery of data is simplified for both groups. Learn how you can use AWS Data Exchange to fuel in-place analytics with AWS services like Amazon Athena, Amazon EMR, and Amazon Redshift. https://aws.amazon.com/data-exchange/
At Affirm, data is its greatest asset. Data is used to track how its products are doing, make strategic decisions, fuel machine learning model training, analyze user trends, detect fraud, and generate reports that are required by a variety of customers and regulators. In this session, learn how Affirm uses Amazon EMR, Amazon Redshift, Amazon Redshift Spectrum, Amazon Athena, Amazon Aurora on Amazon RDS, and AWS DMS to support a unified data lake. Also learn how the company addresses the tradeoffs between different types of data analytics use cases.
Sensor data on the event stream can be voluminous. In NAND manufacturing, there are millions of columns of data that represent many measured and virtual metrics. These sensor data can arrive with considerable velocity. In this session, learn about developing cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses for anomaly detection and yield optimization using deep learning methods, as well as super-fast subsequence signature search on accumulated time-series data and methods for handling very wide data in Apache Spark on Amazon EMR. The trained models are developed in TIBCO Data Science and Amazon SageMaker and applied to event streams using services such as Amazon Kinesis to identify hot paths to anomaly detection. This presentation is brought to you by TIBCO Software, an APN Partner.
In this session, you hear from representatives of Intuit about how they migrated the company's analytics, data processing (ETL), and data science workloads running on Apache Hive and Spark to Amazon EMR to reduce costs, increase availability, and improve performance. This session focuses on key motivations and the benefits of a move to the cloud and also gives details of key architectural changes and best practices.
Woot.com designed and developed a data lake as a replacement for their legacy data warehouse to deliver powerful analytics capabilities across multiple business areas. In this session, learn how it used Amazon EMR, Amazon Athena, AWS Glue, and Amazon QuickSight to build an automated process to ingest and centralize data from external and internal sources for immediate analysis.
It's easier than ever to grow your compute capacity and enable new types of cloud computing applications while maintaining the lowest TCO by blending Amazon EC2 Spot, On-Demand, and Reserved Instance purchase models. In this session, learn how to use the power of Amazon EC2 with other AWS services and features such as Auto Scaling, Amazon ECS, Amazon EKS, Amazon EMR, and AWS Batch to programmatically optimize costs while maintaining high performance and availability- all without breaking a sweat.
AWS delivers an integrated suite of services that provides everything needed to quickly and easily build a well-governed data lake with self-serve access to data. In this talk, Rahul Pathak, general manager for Amazon Athena and Amazon EMR, talks about some of the key trends we're seeing and describes how they shape the services AWS offers. Specific trends include the rise of machine-generated data and semi-structured/unstructured data as dominant sources of new data, the move toward serverless, SPI-centric computing, and the growing need for local access to data from users around the world.
In this session, you learn how Opendoor, an online home-buying and selling service, manages medium-sized real estate data using Spark. The session covers the journey from in-house data processing solutions using Kubernetes to benchmark against providers, such as Amazon EMR and Databricks, to migrating to Amazon EMR to achieve a balance of cost and performance. As a cost-conscious startup with heavy data processing needs, Opendoor had to balance cost, performance, availability, and developer experiences when designing its ETL and machine learning platform. This session focuses on how Opendoor optimized its data workflow by migrating Spark workloads from Kubernetes to Amazon EMR.
Flexibility is key when building and scaling a data lake, and by choosing the right storage architecture you will have agility to quickly experiment and migrate with the latest analytics solutions. In this session, we explore the best practices for building a data lake on Amazon S3 that allows you to leverage an entire array of AWS, open-source, and third-party analytics tools, helping you remain at the cutting edge. We explore use cases for analytics tools, including Amazon EMR and AWS Glue, and query-in-place tools like Amazon Athena, Amazon Redshift Spectrum, Amazon S3 Select, and Amazon Glacier Select.
Hertz is undertaking a massive digital transformation to evolve its technology landscape. This move provides an opportunity to extract valuable insights from a large amount of data produced by the new systems. In this session, learn how Deloitte collaborated with Hertz to build a next-generation data platform, which includes an integration hub, a unified reporting layer, and an ecosystem of tools used to build advanced analytics models. Discover how the solution leveraged all native AWS services, such as Amazon S3, Amazon Kinesis, Amazon EMR, and AWS Lambda, to enable cross-functional insights and accelerate the cloud journey in under 12 months. This presentation is brought to you by Deloitte, an APN Partner.
Building data lakes in Amazon S3 offers scale and reliability for open-source data formats and a common data store for both reporting and BI as well as big data analytics and ML/AI. However, most commonly used big data frameworks make customers reinstate large volumes of data for handling incremental changes in individual records. Apache Hudi provides the ability to create, upsert, and delete records and simplifies the handling of change data capture and the ingestion of real-time streams. In this session, we dive deep into using Apache Hudi with Amazon EMR, exploring fundamental concepts, common scenarios, and how to use Hudi to optimize workflows.
Amazon.com migrated its enterprise data warehouse-hundreds of thousands of daily jobs running in one of the world's largest Oracle data warehouses-to a scalable, AWS-based data lake in less than two years. In this session, we dive into the architecture of Amazon.com's data lake and how it leveraged Amazon Redshift and Amazon EMR. We also review the key strategies used to migrate all of the legacy jobs to the new system, and we include lessons learned from the first year of running the system at scale after the migration.
Learn how to run big data frameworks such as Apache Spark, and Hadoop through Amazon EMR while maximizing for scale, performance, and deep cost savings with Spot Instances. Access significantly higher compute capacity and reduce the time to process big datasets at a fraction of the cost. Learn how to configure clusters and instance fleets for the right mix of On-Demand and Spot Instances for long-running and transient workloads.
Amazon EMR enables customers to run ETL, machine learning, real-time processing, data science, and low-latency SQL at petabyte scale. We focus this session on running Apache Spark on Amazon EMR. We introduce design patterns such as using Amazon S3 instead of HDFS, running long- and short-lived clusters, using notebooks, and performance-related enhancements. We discuss lowering cost with auto scaling and Spot Instances, and security with encryption and fine-grained access control with AWS Lake Formation.

The AWS analytics group of services has a lot of members. These are some of the newer offerings from Amazon. However, they are very effective to use in professional development and learning more about your enterprise environment. Amazon Athena Query Data in S3 using SQL. Store your data in S3. Then you can define your schema on top of the data set and run queries. The UI is not very awesome currently, but it is a way to avoid building out a data warehouse for your needs. This serverless query service can get you analytical data back quickly. Better yet, it comes without all of the typical setup. Amazon CloudSearch Managed Search Service. This service provides a way for you to upload data or documents, index them, and provide a search system for that data via HTTP requests. This is flexible and allows you to custom define the indexes. Thus, you can upload almost any document format or data style and utilize the service to handle search requests. Amazon EMR Hosted Hadoop Framework. This service allows you to spin up a Spark or Hadoop system on top of your S3 data lake quickly. It covers the headaches of getting those environments built. Also, it is a cost-effective solution to your data science needs that can scale to avoid over-buying your resources. Amazon Elasticsearch Service Run and Scale Elasticsearch Clusters. ES is a popular open-source search and analytics engine. There are a broad number of uses for this including log file research, stream data analysis, application monitoring, and more. This is quick and easy to set up so you can dive right into the analysis part of your work. The fully managed service has an API and CLI, as you would expect so that you can automate it to your needs. Amazon Kinesis Work with Real-time Streaming Data. This provides a way to analyze video streams in real time and was covered with the media group. We included it in the media episode. Therefore, we will not spend time on it here. Amazon Managed Streaming for Kafka Fully Managed Apache Kafka Service. I must admit that this is not an area where I am solid so it, is best to use Amazon's own words. "Amazon Managed Streaming for Kafka (Amazon MSK) is a fully managed service that makes it easy for you to build and run applications that use Apache Kafka to process streaming data. Amazon MSK provides the control-plane operations and lets you use Apache Kafka data-plane operations, such as those for producing and consuming data. It runs open-source versions of Apache Kafka. This means existing applications, tooling, and plugins from partners and the Apache Kafka community are supported without requiring changes to application code. This release of Amazon MSK supports Apache Kafka version 1.1.1." Amazon Redshift This service provides fast, simple, and cost-effective data warehousing. If you wonder whether there is a fully managed data warehouse solution out there then here is your answer. Redshift is fully managed, scales up to petabytes, and incorporates the security and administration tools you come to expect from AWS. There are some excellent how-to and tutorials to help you get started and maybe even understand warehouses more in general. Amazon Quicksight This is a fast business analytics service. Also known as a fully managed BI solution. It is what you would expect from a BI solution. Therefore, it requires setup and forethought to position your data. Although this is a robust service, expect to spend a few hours (at least) to get going. AWS Data Pipeline Next is an orchestration service for periodic, data-driven workflows. Yes, that is their words, not mine. The AWS Data Pipeline is a web service that helps you reliably move data between different AWS compute and storage services. The scope includes on-premises data sources as well. Therefore, you can schedule moving all of your enterprise data to the proper destinations. All of this includes being able to translate and manipulate it at scale. Once you get to the point of having a lot of data in AWS services such as Amazon S3, Amazon RDS, Amazon DynamoDB, and Amazon EMR, this becomes critical. Thus, while this is not of much use early on, it is essential to running an enterprise. AWS Glue This service helps you prepare and load data. AWS Glue is a fully managed ETL (extract, transform, and load) solution. Therefore, this makes it easy to prepare and load your data no matter the end goal. You can create and run an ETL job with a few clicks in the AWS Management Console. I have not used it beyond simple tests, but this may be your best solution to ETL needs. When you store your data on AWS then why not try out this solution? It catalogs the data and makes it easy to dive right into that ETL process. AWS Lake Formation This is advertised as how to build a secure data lake in days. I find it hard to argue against that claim. We have already seen how well AWS handles storing and cataloging (even indexing) data. Therefore, it makes sense that their data lake tool would extend from those solutions. With data lakes being a sort of new concept you might want to see the latest news and how-tos at this link. https://aws.amazon.com/big-data/datalakes-and-analytics/what-is-a-data-lake/

Flexibility is key when building and scaling a data lake. The analytics solutions you use in the future will almost certainly be different from the ones you use today, and choosing the right storage architecture gives you the agility to quickly experiment and migrate with the latest analytics solutions. In this session, we explore best practices for building a data lake in Amazon S3 and Amazon Glacier for leveraging an entire array of AWS, open source, and third-party analytics tools. We explore use cases for traditional analytics tools, including Amazon EMR and AWS Glue, as well as query-in-place tools like Amazon Athena, Amazon Redshift Spectrum, Amazon S3 Select, and Amazon Glacier Select. Complete Title: AWS re:Invent 2018: [REPEAT 1] Data Lake Implementation: Processing & Querying Data in Place (STG204-R1)
You've designed and built a well-architected data lake and ingested extreme amounts of structured and unstructured data. Now what? In this session, we explore real-world use cases where data scientists, developers, and researchers have discovered new and valuable ways to extract business insights using advanced analytics and machine learning. We review Amazon S3, Amazon Glacier, and Amazon EFS, the foundation for the analytics clusters and data engines. We also explore analytics tools and databases, including Amazon Redshift, Amazon Athena, Amazon EMR, Amazon QuickSight, Amazon Kinesis, Amazon RDS, and Amazon Aurora; and we review the AWS machine learning portfolio and AI services such as Amazon SageMaker, AWS Deep Learning AMIs, Amazon Rekognition, and Amazon Lex. We discuss how all of these pieces fit together to build intelligent applications.
Amazon EMR provides a flexible range of service customization options, enabling customers to use it as a building block for their data platforms. In this session, AWS customers Salesforce.com and Vanguard discuss in detail how they use Amazon EMR to build a self-service, secure, and auditable data engineering platform. Customers who want to optimize their design and configurations should attend this session to learn best practices from customer experts. Topics include achieving cost-efficient scale, using notebooks, processing streaming data, rapid prototyping of applications and data pipelines, architecting for both transient and persistent clusters, setting up advanced security and authorization controls, and enabling easy self service for users.
As Amazon's consumer business continues to grow, so does the volume of data and the number and complexity of the analytics done in support of the business. In this session, we talk about how Amazon.com uses AWS technologies to build a scalable environment for data and analytics. We look at how Amazon is evolving the world of data warehousing with a combination of a data lake and parallel, scalable compute engines, such as Amazon EMR and Amazon Redshift. Complete Title: AWS re:Invent 2018: Under the Hood: How Amazon Uses AWS Services for Analytics at a Massive Scale (ANT206)
As data volumes grow and customers store more data on AWS, they often have valuable data that is not easily discoverable and available for analytics. Learn how AWS Glue makes it easy to build and manage enterprise-grade data lakes on Amazon S3. AWS Glue can ingest data from variety of sources into your data lake, clean it, transform it, and automatically register it in the AWS Glue Data Catalog, making data readily available for analytics. Learn how you can set appropriate security policies in the Data Catalog and make data available for a variety of use cases, such as run ad-hoc analytics in Amazon Athena, run queries across your data warehouse and data lake with Amazon Redshift Spectrum, run big data analysis in Amazon EMR, and build machine learning models with Amazon SageMaker and AWS Glue. Additionally, Robinhood will share how they were able to move from a world of data silos to building a robust, petabyte scale data lake on Amazon S3 with AWS Glue. Robinhood is one of the fastest-growing brokerages, serving over five million users with an easy to use investment platform that offers commission-free trading of equities, ETFs, options, and cryptocurrencies. Learn about the design paradigms and tradeoffs that Robinhood made to achieve a cost effective and performant data lake that unifies all data access, analytics, and machine learning use cases.

Learn how to leverage AWS compute, analytics, and database services, such as Amazon S3, Amazon EC2, Amazon EMR, Amazon Athena, Amazon DynamoDB, and Amazon Redshift, to build an ML workflow that predicts the future interests and behaviors of gamers to better serve your needs and theirs.
At Affirm, we lend billions of dollars to millions of customers using data-driven machine learning models that are trained on years of lending history. Feature extraction and validation in a risk management context presents unique challenges, so we have built a pipeline to eliminate training/serving skew in both development and production systems, and to run extensive regression testing on proposed PRs. Running Spark on Amazon EMR clusters provides an economic means to speed up this process. In this talk, we review our signal extraction and decisioning systems architecture and discuss how we use AWS to scale our compute.
Data and data-based decisions are at the core of everything online brokerage Robinhood does. In this talk, we dive deep into how Robinhood moved from a world where multiple systems grew to create an unwieldy data architecture, and we discuss how the company used AWS tools, such as Amazon S3, Amazon Athena, Amazon EMR, AWS Glue, and Amazon Redshift, to build a robust data lake that can operate on petabyte scale. We also discuss design paradigms and tradeoffs made to achieve a cost-effective and performant cluster that unifies all data access, analytics, and machine learning use cases.
