On this Episode of Dad Is Not A Noun I had the opportunity to talk to devoted husband, father, teacher, and author Jonathan Marshall on fatherhood, patience, vulnerability, and his children book "I'll Be There," story of a father and son. This is an awesome book not just for fathers and sons, but for anyone parenting little ones when they get scared. It is a great reminder to tell your little ones you will be there to support them. (https://www.amazon.com/Ill-Right-There-Jonathan-Marshall-ebook/dp/B081CKNCM8/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?qid=1646607470&refinements=p_27%3AJonathan+Marshall&s=digital-text&sr=1-2&text=Jonathan+Marshall) Jonathan Marshall is a poet, writer, and author of the book, "I'll Be Right There". Jonathan has spent the last decade and a half working with youth from various backgrounds. He works full time as an Academic Outreach Manager at Eastern University, where he studied Early Childhood Education. He is a person who likes to create things. Some things he likes to make: Children's books. Images. and most of all......Mystery meals. Although originally from Camden, New Jersey, he now lives in the Philadelphia area with his wife and their two boys and daughter. TL Cross comes from a musical background that spans back to when his grandfather hosted his own radio show and further extends to his father, aunts and uncles, most of whom were major-label gospel artists and musicians. Nowadays, the 25-year-old singer/songwriter/producer has successes of his own. His writing credits include "I'll Make It Right" (Usher), "Whereareyougoing" (Musiq Soulchild), "I'll Be Right There" (112) and "Get It On Tonite" (Montell Jordan), which hit No. 1 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart in 2000. He's produced for such artists as Ghostface Killah ("Never B the Same Again," featuring Carl Thomas) and DMX ("Goodbye") while Yolanda Adams, Donnell Jones and Case are among those who have tapped him as a backing singer. Today, Cross is co-CEO of Da Gutta Fam production/record company, an entity he and his partners hope will be picked up by a major label en bloc. They're currently working on projects with Nas, LeToya Luckett and Jamie Foxx. "Da Gutta Fam is the umbrella and TL Cross is the trailblazer," Cross says. "We have solid producers and hitmakers. We've had A-list artists choose us to make music for them." Cross has further dealt with majors as part of the quartet Morrison Slick, a group whose previous incarnations have released records via Island and Motown. Morrison Slick later signed a songwriting deal with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis before becoming part of Da Gutta Fam.

On today’s episode, I speak to Fern Pessin, author of I'll Be Right There: A Guidebook for Adults Caring for Their Aging. In addition to being an author herself, Fern also works with people on telling their stories. I’ll Be Right There was written to remove the overwhelm of the caregiving role and support families on the caregiving journey; to help people know what they didn’t know they needed to know when they find themselves in the role of helping a parent. In this episode we discuss:  Your memory/recollection you recount in your book isn’t going to align always with the memory of others you are talking about in your book. You just need to clear it with them in advance or include a disclaimer that says this is told according to your truth and memory, and it may not match up to how others may have remembered the experience. Make it a habit to write every day. Writing can be a cathartic experience, getting everything out of your head and onto paper, so you can have some emotional separation when you are editing it.  Write every day, get it all on paper. And then you can look at it after.  Enjoy the episode!

Amanda and Jenn discuss Korean fiction, Central American authors, fluffy audiobooks, and more in this week's episode of Get Booked. This episode is sponsored by Girls Burn Brighter by Shobha Rao and Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi.   Questions   1. Hello Get Booked friends! I would love some book recommendations for books written by Korean authors or about Korea. I recently read The Vegetarian by Han Kang and The Orphan Master's Son by Adam Johnson and realized that I do not know very much about Korean culture and history. I loved the cultural side notes that were included about Japan in Ozeki's Tale for the Time Being and would enjoy something like that, but about Korea. I am open to fiction or non-fiction and historical or contemporary works. --Sally   2. First, I just wanted to give Amanda a huge thank you for recommending Captive Prince! I’ve heard you recommend it a few times before, but I just never got around to reading it. After hearing you recommend it a few weeks ago I finally decided to pick it up from the library. Suffice it to say, I think this is the book I’ve been looking for all my life and I finished the series in three days. I’d love to know if there are any read-alikes out there? The Captive Prince series checked almost all of my boxes. M/M relationships are strongly preferred and no need to worry about trigger warnings for me. I’ve already read and loved Amberlough. I’ve also read The Magpie Lord, but only thought it was ok. Thanks again for the Captive Prince recommend! --Kevin   3. Coming off Black History Month I need help. I listened to The Bone Tree, read Brown Girl Dreaming, and read Invisible Man. Also read Banthology. These were all great esp, Brown Girl Dreaming. My request....I have noticed as with Homegoing, several of the books by people of color are very mentally heavy when reading one after the other. Justifiably so. I am looking for a female voice, mid 20-40's, lyrical, fun, a bit biting, with her girls with a story to tell. Something almost musical. I don't want YA. Something where the setting even plays a part. Got anything? --Michele   4. I know this is really last minute and I have no idea if you'll be able to help me, but I am really stuck. I am supposed to be getting a book for someone who I don't know based on their "reading" profile. They said they like autobiographies, especially ones related to travel and sports and that they are looking to get into self help books. They also mentioned that their favorite books are The Last Lecture, Mud Sweat and Tears and 1000 Days of Spring. They have a completely different reading taste to mine, so I am really out of my depth and hoping you could help. Thanks in advance and I LOVE the show! --Marija   5. Greetings! My husband and I are going on the trip of a lifetime during the month of April. We will be traveling through the Panama Canal and stopping at all the Central American countries except El Salvador. We will also be making 3 stops in Mexico and Cartegena, Colombia. I'm looking for literary fiction novels that take place in Central America (rather than Mexico or South America.) No short stories, please! Here are some books that I've read or are familiar with. (None of them take place in Central America, but you get the idea!): The Sound of Things Falling by Juan Gabriel Vasquez Like Water for Chocolate How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents Anything by Gabriel Garcia Marquez Thanks! --April   6. For about a year now I've been listening to podcasts (mostly Book Riot ones) at work. I haven't quite found enough to fill all my hours, but I find I prefer listening to talking over music. To fill the gaps, I tried turning to audiobooks. (Libby is the best.) My typical fare is heavily Sci Fi and Fantasy, but I was finding them a little too complicated to follow while working - so I tried YA (another love of mine) and it was still too important that I caught every detail. After that I tried nonfiction, but kept finding things that were either too dry on audio so it became basically white noise, or super depressing. TL:DR can you help me find books that are A) on audio, B) light in subject matter (as a grad student in my "free time" I spend a lot of time stressed out and would like my audiobooks to be a break from that), and C) simple enough that I can still follow even if I get a little distracted by a more-complicated-than-usual problem at work? Something like a cozy mystery or a fluffy romance (like Austenland?) might be good, but I don't know where to start. Bonus points for SF/F flavors, but they're not necessary, and extra bonus points for diversity of any kind, which I feel like I don't get enough of. Already read: Sarah Maclean, and Tessa Dare. Also, I used to love Lillian Jackson Braun's The Cat Who series, but have not kept up with the latest in cozy mystery good stuff. Thanks in advance! I love the show - a part of me wishes I could just fill all of my weekly hours with listening to Get Booked, but I imagine that would be very tiring for you. --Anne   7. Hi Amanda and Jenn, I'm in dire need of help! ! I'm going through a major life transition and I've found that the books that I would normally turn to don't seem to work anymore. I would like some recommendations of memoirs, nonfiction, or fiction that feature strong women who have made radical changes to their lives. Thank you! --Daniela   Books Discussed Empress: The Astonishing Reign of Nur Jahan by Ruby Lal (July 2018) Salt Houses by Hala Alyan The Fact of a Body by Alexandria Marzano-Lesnevich While the City Slept by Eli Sanders Behind the Beautiful Forevers: Life, Death, and Hope in a Mumbai Undercity by Katherine Boo I’ll Be Right There by Kyung-Sook Shin, translated by Sora Kim-Russell The Calligrapher’s Daughter by Eugenia Kim Sorcerer of the Wildeeps by Kai Ashante Wilson Valdemar: Last Herald Mage series (Magic’s Pawn #1) trigger warnings for rape, child abuse, suicide The Sisterhood of Blackberry Corner by Andrea Smith The Unleashing by Shelly Laurenston A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson A Guidebook to Relative Strangers by Camille T Dungy The Dream of My Return by Horacio Castellanos Moya, translated by Katherine Silver Central American author recommendations post The World In Half by Christina Henriquez Shades of Milk and Honey by Mary Robinette Kowal Death Comes to Pemberley by PD James Hammer Head by Nina MacLaughlin Tiny Beautiful Things by Cheryl Strayed Braving The Wilderness by Brene Brown

Part 2 of the 9th season finale is here! I'm concluding this season with house remixes of top charting songs. Picking up from where the episode 9 left off, the BPM begins at 125 and slowly increases to a dubby 160 BPM. Starting off with my favorite cover of "Hotline Bling" by Disclosure f./ Sam Smith and bringing in the revivals, such as Aretha Franklin's "Deeper Love" and "Sugar" by Robin Schulz. The episode ends at an unusual spot for me, since I'm not well versed in dubstep. Also, this is the first time I've ever had Zac Brown in my seasons of Club Soda, which is pretty awesome. I'd like to thank all of my fans for spending their time with me on this wonderful journey so far this year. It's been a great 6 months in finishing this season of Club Soda 9: Spada. I will be back next season and it will be another unforgettable season. Please continue following me on iTunes, Facebook, and PodOMatic for the latest updates! "Hotline Bling" by Disclosure f./ Sam Smith "Love Runs Out" by One Republic "Pray To God" by Calvin Harris f./ HAIM "Rather Be" by Clean Bandit f./ Jess Glynne "Deeper Love" by Aretha Franklin "How Deep Is Your Love" by Calvin Harris and Disciples "Sugar" by Robin Schulz f./ Francesco Yates "Street Player On My Mind" by Ellie Goulding f./ Chicago "Powerful (Michael Calfan Remix)" by Major Lazer f./ Ellie Goulding "Ocean Drive (Michael Calfan Remix)" by Duke Dumont f./ Boy Matthews "Broken Arrows (M-22 Remix)" by Avicii f./ Zac Brown "All Of Me" by John Legend "Be Right There" by Diplo and Sleepy Tom f./ Priscilla Renea "Falling Away" by Seven Lions f./ Lights "Never Forget You" by Zara Larsson & MNEK "To Ü" by Skrillex And Diplo f./ AlunaGeorge

2013 May "En Mai fais ce qu'il te plaît!" French Proverb which literally means " In May do what pleases you"..  Today is my birthday and I am stuck at home with a massive head cold.. Thought I would give myself a little present and put together a set JUST FOR ME...  A collection of deep, cookie, eclectic tunes, which I would hate to forget and lose in the dark recesses of my hard drive because they do not fit the strict format of Deep, Soulful, Progressive of this podcast. So here it is, jams I like, sounds I want to be able to access in the distant future, tracks that may not have the vocal hooks I love, yet trigger emotions at a complete different level. If you do not want to indure a bit of tech, a bit of deep, a bit of NY style, a bit of garage, a bit of acid, a bit of jackin' do not bother with the set and wait for the next one.. I am not inferring that those tunes are "better", just that on my birthday I may do what pleases .. ME.. Playlist: 2009 Intro I Feel Good. Roland Clark 2013 Where Did You Go (AtJazz Remix). Shea      2013 On To You. Golf Clap 2013 NY 2 UK (James Dexter Mix). DeepCitySoul & DJ Romain 2013 I Saw Yo Girl (Full Acid Vox Edit). Waifs & Strays 2013 Pieces Garage Mix. Frankie Knuckles & Director’s Cut 2013 I Feel (Samson Lewis Remix). Logistix pres. Deon Nathan   Highlights: Not sure Highlights is going to cut it but a better option is to comment as to why I included a specific track: “Where Did You Go” Shea and Marcel Atjazz, need I say more.. Lovelly little intro track. “On To You”. Golf Clap, is “very hot right now ;)” deep, great work on the beats and the production yet melodic. “NY 2 UK”.. Do I love the undergroove? Yes add some accapellas and everyone who knows me, gets the idea.. Very current, real Deep, edgy, funky… “I Saw Yo Girl” I always have had a thing for Hip/Hop.. Edgy track with an acid tinge.. “Pieces” Flashmob is becoming bigger by the day.. and I love the acapella with the brit accent.. Another edgy track, which may really push your limits. “New York Style” Jerk House Connection French and really good.. I love the NY feel, I love the reggae vocals.. and it stays melodic. “Be Right There”.. Current, modern, hatched beats had to included a bit of Jackin’ House in this set.. “All I Have Is Love” continuing the darker NY feel with a greek remixer Elias Tzikas. “Let It Go” Deep Tech House at its very best.. I wanted a wake up track with a nice groove at this moment in the set.. This came up.. “What you need” now in the back part of the set, introducing a bit a bit of funk and sugar.. “Another Way” another Golf Clap track with Grant Nelson’s giving it a UK feel.. If you have stayed with me so far, you are starting to have fun!! “My Urban Soul”.. Roland Clark, Urban Soul.. Bringing you down but how can I resist… “The Whistle Song” Frankie Knuckles seminal classic gets the Supernova remix treatment. I love it and perfect to get ready to exit the set.. “I Feel (Samson Lewis Remix)” I absolutely love this track, deep, groovy funky and I simply had to give anyone who actually stayed with me on this set a big dollup of sugar at the end..   Next one will be less introspective I promise..   Happy Birthday to Me   Xtian
