Dr Sam Moxon, narrates his blog written for Dementia Researcher. There are few things as important to our society as the ability to communicate with one another. It helps us express our ideas and feelings, understand the thoughts and emotions of others and build relationships. Communication allows us to both learn new ideas and pass our knowledge on. Without the ability to communicate, we would likely be one of the most primitive species on the planet. In this blog Sam makes a case for the importance of communication, at all levels. On today's show, we're going all the way back to May 5th, 2014 when we did an exclusive interview with the legendary John Anthony West. This is perhaps our favorite interview we've ever done. John Anthony West was an American author, lecturer, guide, and proponent of the Sphinx water erosion hypothesis in geology. Influenced by R.A. Schwaller de Lubicz, in 1993 his work with Robert M. Schoch, a geologist and associate professor of natural science at the College of General Studies at Boston University was presented by Charlton Heston in an NBC special called “The Mystery of the Sphinx” that won a News & Documentary Emmy Award for Best Research and a nomination for Best Documentary. The documentary contends that the main type of weathering evident on the Great Sphinx and surrounding enclosure walls could only have been caused by prolonged and extensive rainfall during the time period from 10,000 to 5000 BCE and was carved out of limestone bedrock by an ancient advanced culture. This challenged the conventional dating of the carving of the statue circa 2500 BCE. West suggested that the Sphinx may be over twice as old as originally determined, whereas Schoch made a more conservative determination of between 5000 and 7000 BCE. At the turn of the 19th century, American universities were mostly under-resourced, regional schools. By World War II, they had become research leaders on the global stage, attracting the world's best scientists. In a paper in the Journal of Economic Perspectives, economists W. Bentley MacLeod and Miguel Urquiola say that the US universities’ ascendancy in research started earlier than many people believe. Just after the Civil War, two innovators found a successful formula. Johns Hopkins and Cornell made key reforms that started attracting the best research talent—and the large sums of money needed to keep it. Today, reformers would like to tweak practices like tenure that helped create this virtuous circle. But Urquiola says they should keep a few important tradeoffs in mind. Urquiola recently spoke with the AEA’s Tyler Smith about the history of the US university system and what today's education policymakers can learn from it.

Today's Flash Back Friday comes from Episode 69, originally published in August 2012. As the face of business evolves, more small and medium businesses are outsourcing work to remote employees or independent contractors versus maintaining the brick and mortar offices with onsite employees. The advances in technology have made it possible to find employees and contractors around the world. But what kinds of work should be done remotely, what can be effectively outsourced overseas or should be U.S. based, and how does an employer keep workers accountable? Jason Hartman visits with Leadership IQ founder and CEO, Mark Murphy, about these questions. Mark explains outcome-based management techniques, such as deadlines for projects, technologies to monitor employees, and various instant messaging programs to check in. Mark encourages outcome-based work accountability over technological monitoring to build a healthy relationship and accountability with workers. Mark also discusses screening and hiring from the remote workforce, describing the personality types that work best remotely. Additionally, he shares the importance of good leadership, stressing that leaders need to be much more explicit and transparent, and have clear expectations with a clear “why.” One of the major sources of remote employee dissatisfaction is feeling left out of the loop. Mark Murphy is the founder and CEO of Leadership IQ. He leads one of the world's largest studies on goal-setting and leadership, and his groundbreaking research has been featured in Fortune, Forbes, Businessweek, U.S. News & World Report, the Washington Post, and hundreds more periodicals. Mark has appeared on CBS News Sunday Morning, ABC's 20/20, Fox Business News, and other top broadcasts. Mark has lectured at the Harvard Business School, Yale University, the University of Rochester, and the University of Florida. And his clients include Microsoft, IBM, MasterCard, Merck, MD Anderson Cancer Center, FirstEnergy, Volkswagen and Johns Hopkins. Author of the new book Hiring for Attitude (McGraw-Hill; Dec. 9, 2011), Mark has also written the international bestseller Hundred Percenters: Challenge Your People to Give It Their All and They'll Give You Even More, as well as Hard Goals, The Deadly Sins of Employee Retention, and Generation Y and the New Rules of Management. Among his many honors, Mark was a three-time nominee for Modern Healthcare's “Most Powerful People in Healthcare Award,” joining a list of 300 luminaries including Hillary Clinton and Bill Frist -- among only 15 consultants ever to be nominated to this list. He was also awarded the prestigious Healthcare Financial Management Association's “Helen Yerger Award for Best Research” for being the first person to discover the link between patient mortality rates and hospital finances. Some of his other well-known research studies include “Are SMART Goals Dumb?,” “Why CEO's Get Fired,” “Why New Hires Fail” and “Don't Expect Layoff Survivors to Be Grateful.” Previously, Mark was President of a joint venture with Mercer Human Resources Consulting. Prior to that he was a partner in the management consulting subsidiary of VHA, Inc., the world's largest healthcare consortium. He holds degrees from the University of Buffalo, executive coursework at The Wharton School and an MBA from the University of Rochester. He lives in Atlanta and Washington, DC. One of the key skills successful entrepreneurs share is their ability to use the selling process as a research vehicle. Being a great designer, mechanic or programmer matters little if you can’t convince someone to buy your goods or services. Alternatively, hoping “to be discovered” may leave you waiting a long time. West suggested that the Sphinx may be over twice as old as originally determined, whereas Schoch made a more conservative determination of between 5000 and 7000 BCE

“On July 5, 1954, Elvis Presley, Scotty Moore, and Bill Black forever changed musical history,” writes Sheree Homer in Catch that Rockabilly Fever: Personal Stories of Life on the Road and in the Studio (McFarland, 2010). It was on this day that the trio recorded Arthur ‘Big Boy’ Crudup’s “That’s All Right” at Sam Phillips’ Sun Recording Studio in Memphis, Tennessee. Rockabilly was born. Rockabilly is a rambunctious musical style that combines the liveliest elements of country, gospel, and rhythm and blues. Homer captures the essence of rockabilly through biographical vignettes of forty-six rockabilly artists including Carl Mann, Elvis Presley, Ronnie Hawkins, Buddy Holly and the Crickets, Ricky Nelson, Laura Lee Perkins, High Noon, and Cari Lee Merritt. These portraits include legends as well as newcomers, southerners as well as Californians, pioneers as well as revivalists. Much of Homer’s material come from personal interviews with the artists themselves or those who were close to them. What better way is there to understand a musical style than through the lives of the people, both past and present, who make it? Catch that Rockabilly Fever is a 2011 finalist in the Association for Recorded Sound Collections Awards for Excellence in the “Best Research in Recorded Rock and Pop Music” category.
