The Identity Project: The Unmaking of a Democracy is a new book by the journalist Rahul Bhatia. Many Grand Tamasha listeners will recognize Rahul's byline in revered publications like the New Yorker, the Guardian, and Caravan. He's written celebrated profiles of everyone from Arnab Goswami to cricket chief N. Srinivasan. And his reporting has taken on subjects from Baba Ramdev's business empire to the COVID-19 pandemic. His new book is based on six years of research and reportage from across India, where he set out on a quest to understand the ideological moorings of what we have come to call “the New India.” To talk more about his book and the state of democracy in India, Rahul joins Milan on the podcast this week. The two discuss Rahul's reporting on Aadhaar—India's unique biometric identification program—and its precursors, the Hindu nationalist push for a new national citizenship regime, and the inner workings of the Indian state's coercive power. Plus, the two discuss whether and how the results of India's 2024 election have been a setback to the cause of Hindu nationalism.Episode notes:1. Welcome to Top of the Morning by Mint, your weekday newscast that brings you five major stories from the world of business. It's Friday, July 26, 2024. My name is Nelson John. Let's get started:Sensex was down by 0.14 percent, while Nifty dropped by 0.03 percent during trading hours yesterday.Nifty and Sensex aren't the only ones having a poor run. Their cousin in the US, Nasdaq, is having a bit of a meltdown too. Technology stocks, which were having a dream run over the past couple of years, have seen a massive sell-off this week. So far this week, Nasdaq is down nearly 3 and a half percent. Widespread fear of the artificial intelligence bubble bursting for these tech stocks has spooked investors, who have decided to sell en masse. Abhishek Mukherjee brings you the details of this sudden change, and what lies ahead for Nasdaq's tech stocks.Gold prices too are down around 7 percent since the Union Budget cut the import duty on gold. This move by Nirmala Sitharaman raised fear among investors because this directly affected the yields of sovereign gold bonds. But Ram Sahgal reports that despite this beating, investors in the gold bonds still stand to double their investments. As per the Reserve Bank of India, bonds bought in 2016 which are to be redeemed in August this year will give an annual compounded rate of 10.3 percent. In comparison, Nifty has compounded 13.8 percent over the same period. It's not all dull for gold bond investors, after all.Out with the dollar, in with the yen. Indian companies are increasingly open to taking on debt in Japan's national currency, as opposed to the standard US dollar. The yen has slid 18 percent against the rupee since the beginning of 2023. Nehal Chaliawala and Shayan Ghosh report that this makes it quite appealing for Indian corporates to take on debt — a sliding currency means that the borrower will have to pay less than anticipated. Companies like JSW Steel, Power Finance Corporation, and the Housing and Urban Development Corporation have taken yen-denominated debt worth about 11,000 crore rupees in the past 11 months. Even the Tamil Nadu government has borrowed a substantial amount in the Japanese currency, note Nehal and Shayan.Patanjali has a new segment it wants to conquer in the FMCG industry: toothpaste. After faring well in areas like ghee, biscuits, hair oil, and honey, the Baba Ramdev-led company wants to beat out the likes of Colgate, Nestle, and Unilever. We invited freelance journalist Devika Singh to take a deep dive into the company's latest pursuit. Patanjali has also done quite well in the ayurveda space, and now wants to replicate that success across the FMCG board. Devika writes about Patanjali's past, how it turned its focus into FMCGs, and what the road looks ahead after consecutive years of flat revenues. The Olympics start today! The celebrated sporting event starts in Paris today, and will continue for the next two and a half weeks. Every leap year, athletes look forward to qualifying and participating in this spectacle. However, every leap year, another discussion takes place: that India should host the Olympics. Siddharth Upasani writes that this isn't a very wise move. Hosting such an event costs about 8 billion dollars. While the organising committee is looking to make Olympics more sustainable and cost effective, at this stage, India isn't ready and doesn't need to host Olympics, Upasani writes. We'd love to hear your feedback on this podcast. Let us know by writing to us at feedback@livemint.com. You may send us feedback, tips or anything that you feel we should be covering from your vantage point in the world of business and finance. There is a very interesting story about Ramdev Baba becoming Pir Baba Ramdev. Today Baba is a symbol of faith for both Hindus and Muslims. story of becoming a pir When the stories of Baba Ramdev's miracles reached Mecca, five pirs from there came to Rajasthan to test him. When the Peers arrived, Baba Ramdev made them sit with respect to feed them food.

HIV spread fast in the 80s, but research and education on the topic is lacking—people have a limited understanding of how it spreads and how to prevent it. The government ignores medical advice and tries to stop the spread by jailing sick people. We hear from Siddharth Dube about how the police, as the enforcers of these rules, wield their power against gay people. What is the personal effect of a law? How much can the government restrict a person's fundamental rights in trying to control an epidemic? Anand Grover believes these punitive measures violate the constitution and joins the case with Anjali. He tells the story of Dominic D'Souza, who was arrested in Goa for being HIV positive. Dominic inspired him to fight this case and that decision changed his life. Show Notes All clips and voices used in this podcast are owned by the original creators. If there was ever a cottage industry in India that exported a valuable product line for generations, it has to be Godmen or Yogis. Fact checking each and every Godman is a futile exercise, but in this episode we cover a few aspects: Why have two Yogis - Sadhguru and Baba Ramdev surpassed all others in recent years? Why do they dabble in politics, subtly or blatantly? What value do people see in their products and services? In May this year, Indian Medical Association officials filed a police complaint against yoga guru Baba Ramdev for making defamatory statements about allopathic doctors. Just a few months before that, the association was protesting against a Central government notification allowing Ayurveda postgraduates to conduct some surgical procedures. In the meanwhile, the government has been promoting traditional medicine products, including Coronil for immunity against COVID-19 for which there is no evidence. Traditional medicine, be it Ayurveda or Homeopathy, is very popular in India. In this episode, Suno India's Padmapriya DVL and Menaka Rao report on the various aspects related to the debate related to traditional medicine, from the safety of drugs to the legitimacy of these traditional forms of medicine. This episode features Dr Ritu Priya Mehrotra, professor at the Centre of Social Medicine and Community Health, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi, Dr Sanjay Nagral, a Mumbai-based gastrointestinal and liver surgeon and on the editorial board of Indian Journal of Medical Ethics, and Dr Cyriac Abby Philips, a Kochi-based hepatologist who has been revealing how unregulated traditional medicines are causing liver injuries in people. Yoga guru Baba Ramdev has once again angered the healthcare community with his comments on COVID. While previously, he peddled Patanjali's herbal concoction Coronil to be a "100 percent cure" without any scientific basis. Now, he has offended allopathic doctors across India with unscientific claims, mockery, and insensitivity while downplaying the severity of the pandemic. While families of patients and doctors condemned him for his insensitivity, a couple of weeks later another video emerged where he's seen blaming allopathic doctors for not being able to come up with a cure for COVID, and blaming them for the deaths in the country. While he was forced to withdraw his comments, as both the Indian Medical Association and the health ministry pulled him up for it, the damage has already been done.On 26 May, the Uttarakhand IMA sent a Rs 1,000 crore defamation notice to him, stating that if he doesn't post a video countering the statements given by him and tender a written apology within the next 15 days, then a sum of Rs 1,000 crore will be demanded from him.For today's episode, we will analyse the claims that Baba Ramdev has made in the past and how the Centre has been dealing with this problem of rumour-mongering during this pandemic? You will also hear from allopathic doctors about what they think about Ramdev's claims.Host and Producer: Himmat Shaligram Guest: Dr Abhishek Tandon, a Senior Resident Academic at AIIMS Jodhpur, Dr Harjit Singh Batti, the former president of AIIMS Resident Doctors' Association, Dr Suvrankar Dutta, a radiology resident at AIIMS Delhi and Dr Faiz Abbas Abidi, a junior doctor in Lucknow. The daily death rate from coronavirus is reaching 4000, while daily cases are over 3 lakhs. The Indian Medical Association has written to the health ministry, criticising various aspects of how the pandemic is being handled, asking for it to, quote, “wake up from its slumber”. The IMA has noted over 900 deaths of doctors in India so far due to the pandemic. Dr Navjot Singh Dahiya, the national Vice President of the IMA is one of the most vocal critics of the government's handling of the pandemic. He has called prime minister Narendra Modi a superspreader due to his election rallies during March and April, and also for allowing the Kumbh Mela and other gatherings. He has also made a police complaint against spiritual leader Baba Ramdev for mocking health workers complaining of oxygen shortage and saying that our nostrils are oxygen cylinders. On this episode, our reporter Suryatapa Mukherjee spoke to Dr Navjot Singh Dahiya about his experiences on the ground as a doctor and as a representative of the Indian Medical Association. He laid out his frustrations with the health ministry which he claims suffers from a lack of scientific and professional approach to the pandemic. Baba Ramdev's Patanjali has launched first Ayurvedic cure for COVID 19 or coronavirus patients. Coronil Kit is the name and it costs Rs 545.
At a time when the world is anxiously waiting for a coronavirus vaccine, Patanjali has claimed to have already found an ayurvedic wonder drug. It's not an immunity booster Baba Ramdev said, but a "100 percent cure."From testing the drug on less than 100 patients at clinical trials, Patanjali skipped publishing the details of the study and straight away jumped to launch ‘Coronil and Swasari' on 23 June, as the first ayurvedic treatment for the virus.Barely hours after the launch, the ayurvedic company and its founders found themselves in a hot mess when the AYUSH ministry asked them to “stop advertising/publicising” the drug until their claims are checked by the government. While the sale of its product is currently on hold, there seems to be lot of scientific and procedural gaps with Patanjali's drugs and the trials. So, what do we know about ‘Coronil' and its trials? India reported nearly 15,000 coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, taking the total to 440,215, an increase of 3.5% according to the Health Ministry. The country's death toll has crossed the 14,000 mark with 312 fatalities in a day. India is the fourth-most-affected country by total cases, and eighth by death toll. According to government data, however, the situation in India is not as alarming as some of the other countries, given a limited spread on a per-capita basis. India has 30.04 coronavirus cases per 100,000 population, which is just a little more than a third of the global average of 114.67, the health ministry has said, referring to the WHO Situation Report 153, dated June 21. In a piece of good news, India's unemployment rate fell to its pre-lockdown level of 8.5 per cent in the week ended June 21. The rate had spiked from 8.75 per cent in March to 23.5 per cent in April and peaked at 27 per cent in May. Baba Ramdev-led Patanjali Ayurved, meanwhile, is launching a medicine, 'Coronil', for treating Covid-19 in Haridwar today. Acharya Balkrishna, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Patanjali, had earlier this month claimed that an Ayurvedic medicine developed by the company has been able to cure Covid-19 patients within 5-14 days. US President Donald Trump has issued a proclamation to suspend issuing of H-1B visas, which is popular among Indian IT professionals, along with other foreign work visas for the rest of the year. Trump said the step was essential to help millions of Americans who have lost their jobs due to the current economic crisis. Listen to the Podcast for more
Baba Ramdev has a piece of advice for Deepika Padukone after she visits JNU and becomes a topic of debate across nation.
Yoga guru Baba Ramdev recently courted controversy when he called followers of BR Ambedkar and Periyar “ideological terrorists” in an interview with TV anchor Arnab Goswami. Followers of the Indian reformers and social icons from across the country reacted sharply to Ramdev’s remarks.
In this episode of Reporters Without Orders, host Snigdha is joined by Omar Rashid, Uttar Pradesh Correspondent for The Hindu and Newslaundry reporters Basant Kumar and Ayush Tiwari to talk about the politics of Ayodhya and the drama in Maharashtra among other things. The podcast begins with the usual bits of bizarre news stories. The discussion quickly moves to Ayodhya with Omar who shares his experience of reporting from Uttar Pradesh for the last seven years. He goes on to narrate the reaction of both Hindus and Muslims of Ayodhya to the Supreme Court verdict. Ayush, who is just back from Ayodhya describes in detail what he calls "the market of TV news." Basant has some insightful observations about mainstream media's coverage of the Ayodhya matter. Apart from Ayodhya, the trio also discuss the unfolding drama in Maharashtra, Arnab Goswami's awkward episode with Baba Ramdev on Republic Bharat and the government's response to air pollution in Delhi. For this and more, tune in. In this week’s episode, Manisha Pande wears the host’s hat and is joined by Newslaundry’s Raman Kirpal and guests Nitin Sethi and Hridayesh Joshi to discuss climate change and environment reporting in India, among other topics. The discussion kicks off with Nitin discussing his latest story in Business Standard on how Baba Ramdev’s Patanjali has crept into the Aravalli hills. Patanjali bought spans across 400 acres which amount to “one-third of a village”. Nitin says the land is forested land which cannot be used for commercial purposes, and expresses his reservations about the fact that the land has been “privatised and cordoned off” which is unlawful as the land is supposed to remain in the “commons of the panchayat”. Hridayesh weighs in about the mining activity that has been taking place despite the Supreme Court ruling. He appreciates Nitin’s article for adding a deeper perspective to the discourse. The panel moves on to the forest fires in Uttarakhand. Manisha asks Hridayesh whether the situation has become worse considering it is common practice to burn the ground to grow grass. Hridayesh agrees that the “people (there) have lived with fire” but this occurrence has become severe to the extent that people are forced to migrate from their villages. He adds, “More than 1,200 villages have become ghost towns.” Nitin talks about the need to draw fire lines to prevent the fires from spreading—a job of immense commitment on the part of the government and forest officials.Manisha asks the panel how they would rate the attention to environmental issues in newsrooms and the associated hindrances. Nitin thinks that the media is doing a “spectacular job” of reporting with “very limited resources and individuals who are motivated across newsrooms”. He also commends the vernacular press, and believes the coverage of environmental journalism has expanded since 2007, when people would think of environmental journalism as akin to writing about tigers. Hridayesh talks about how locals and committed on-ground reporters who take journalists to ground zero and give them all the information are not mentioned in the national media.Following a feedback letter, the panel discusses how sources of news work. While Manisha is against any legislation to reveal sources, she also acknowledges the distrust among general readership. The panel agrees that the instincts of a journalist need to develop over time to be able to validate a source’s credibility.Discussing Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal’s announcement to make bus and metro rides free for women in Delhi, Raman thinks it’s a “good idea” and “definitely political”, though it does not solve the issue of security. Nitin thinks that leaders “should get a political advantage” if they make a good decision. He also thinks that the rich need to be taxed to be able to bear the financial burden of this policy, especially when “11 per cent of Delhi’s geography is covered in cars”—a dimension that the government is avoiding. He points out the lack of data to enable an analysis of the feasibility of this policy, calling it a “half-a-cookie job”.The panel also discusses the debate around the Draft National Education Policy and Hindi imposition.
The area bought spans across 400 acres which amount to “one-third of a village”. Nitin says the land is forested land which cannot be used for commercial purposes. In the context of environmental journalism, Hridayesh talks about how locals and committed on-ground reporters who take journalists to ground zero and give them all the information are not mentioned in the national media. Discussing Arvind Kejriwal’s announcement to make bus and metro rides free for women in Delhi, Raman thinks it’s a “good idea” and “definitely political”, though it does not solve the issue of security.Listen to the full Hafta here: https://www.newslaundry.com/2019/06/07/hafta-227-environmental-journalism-patanjali-in-the-aravallis-uttarakhand-forest-fires-and-more See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

While 'market research' sounds vanilla and a career that not too many starry-eyed 3 year olds might have, it's one heck of a fascinating subject. Look around you - everything is the result of some sort of research. From the colour of clothes you wear, to the shape of the phone you're listening to this show on, to the price fixed by the Uber you're taking, to the lines in the horrible billboard ad staring you in the face - each, at some point of time would have seen some sort of research. While some might just be a poor Surveymonkey link circulated to everyone in the office, some others would be a lot of scientific and thorough than that. And to discuss the latter, we have Utsav Mamoria, a MR professional who is also a voracious reader, traveler and poor joke aficionado. Meaning - ideal Simblified fodder. Join us as we talk about market research, its applications (even in the wildest of fields) and fun anecdotes from the field. Reach Utsav at @utsavmamoria on Twitter.
