How do we REALLY calm down at the core? With Yoga, for one thing. It's a 2000 year old practice proven to relieve stress. Suzanne talks to yogini Kashi Ananda   In the spirit of slowing down, I thought I'd do a two part over this episode and next on the root of calming ourselves deeply through yoga and mindfulness. Nothing unplugs us like these two ancient, venerable traditions… so it's time to talk to two experts in these fields.   This show begins with a bit of a chapter of my book, The Extremely Busy Woman's Guide to Self-Care, titled ‘Why Self Care is Not Ultimately About Time Management'. Because really? That's what it's all about –the stuff of life!   In this episode I interview Northern California yogini Kashi Ananda about what really makes yoga so very, very good at helping us slow down and go within. Personally, I've sworn by it for almost 40 years!   Among other things, we discussed:   What it is about yoga that helps cultivate the still mind What yoga is beyond the movements Does video yoga ‘work'? Suzanne's wild yoga experience while giving birth How to get started even if you think you can't do yoga Yoga for staving off midlife aging The magical flow that is Tri-Yoga   May you enjoy this as much as I did!   With love,     Suzanne     RESOURCES   Kashi Ananda Yoga   The Extremely Busy Woman's Guide to Self-Care     OUR GUEST   Kashi is the owner/director of Kashi Ananda Yoga (formerly Devi Yoga Center) in Sebastopol, CA. She is a senior teacher of TriYoga International, and studied with Yogini Kaliji, the founder of TriYoga since 1991. When we stop living under other people's expectations, we become the only writers of our history and builders of our paths. Today's guest is Arjuna Dharmadas. He is a man who left the country of his birth to live a nomadic lifestyle and follow his path, taking him to live in Thailand, India, Egypt, Guatemala, etc. Arjuna is the founder of an Ashram in Guatemala, where I experienced the dark retreat a few years ago. They are now based in Europe, specifically in Italy, where he and his wife continue to teach people and transform their lives through spirituality. In this episode, we will talk about how to avoid falling into a cult, ego, personal practices, and what it was like for Arjuna to leave Germany and start teaching around the world. ABOUT ARJUNA DHARMADAS Arjuna has been studying & practicing eastern spiritual traditions all over the Eastern & Western world for over twenty years starting his path and deep soul-quest at nineteen when he discovered Theravada Buddhism and Vipassana meditation along with Sivananda Yoga and left home for good. Convinced that there is much more to life that he's been told, he's completed dozens of retreats in the Buddhist, Yogic, Tantrik and Advaita (Non-Duality) traditions, some of them in silence, solitude and complete darkness. Arjuna recognizes that we all make our path as we walk, no size fits all. We are all fiercely unique writers of our own story once we let go of the desire to fulfill anyone else's expectations but the ones that make our Soul alive and are ready to go on our own Hero's journey. He aspires to bring the courage for grounded Awareness into every breath. CONNECT WITH ARJUNA https://loveevolveawaken.com WHAT YOU WILL HEAR [4:11] What was it like to leave your home country and open an ashram in another country? [14:52] A higher call requires work on earth to be done. [19:16] How to achieve goals without spirituality? [25:20] Are personal practices necessary? [29:37] What is Bhakti? Despite her extravagant appearance, party-girl reputation, and naturally rebellious nature, Deepika Mehta is deeply devoted and one of the most sincere practitioners we know. In 1997, Deepika Mehta's life was forever changed by a near-death rock climbing accident. Doctors told her she would never walk again. As someone with a love for dance and movement, she also had a deep trust in a higher power. While bedridden, she somehow found the book an Autobiography of a Yogi, which sparked her interest to begin delving into spiritual practices collectively called “yoga” and gave her a sense of hope, inspiration, and control over her rehabilitation. Not one to allow obstacles to deter her spirit and enthusiasm for life, Deepika sought alternative approaches and methods of physical and emotional healing including meditation, pranayama, dance and yoga. She began her yoga journey with Sivananda Yoga, which eventually led her to Ashtanga Yoga and her future Guru, Sri. K. Pattabhi Jois in 2002. Deepika told us that she saw Ashtanga Yoga for the first time in Kerala. An Isreali student was there doing the practice. We asked her “Did it look like Yoga to you? Or was it European gymnastics?” She said… For sure it was yoga. What she saw was concentration and flow. And, she knew immediately that it was something she wanted. In today's hilarious episode we spoke to Deepika about her genuine rebellion against traditional cultural gender roles as an Indian woman and the patriarchy in India. During the episode she used Durga as an example of how to describe herself and we believe she is quite right. Durga's rage at the demon Mahisha-Asura upsets the balance of the Universe, so much so that the male gods beg to soothe her, in attempts to calm her violent vibrations. Likewise, when Deepika is constrained in any way she is furious, enraged at her captivity, whether bedridden and broken as a young woman, or as a new mother at the age of 42, Deepika seeks freedom in all things, and quite like her daughter, howls at confinement and loves to move. You'll hear about her challenges in balancing all of the many obligations of maintaining her practice, being an attentive mother, daughter, wife, all while striving to sustain her career as a highly sought after yoga teacher... And how life requires you to make little compromises along the way. Joining me on the show today are the following passionate and generous teachers...Juliana Machado (E-RYT 500) is a native of Brazil, who moved to New York in 2000 where she was introduced to yoga. She has taken 4 yoga teacher trainings since then: Ashtanga Primary Series a 200 Hour TT (2001), Forrest Yoga a 200 Hour TT (2006), and "Life of a Yogi" 500 Hour TT with Sri Dharma Mittra (2012), and the 800 Hour “Life of a Yogi” with Sri Dharma Mittra (2013). Juliana considers herself to be a lifelong student who is lucky enough to share and teach her lessons learned on this sacred science with all those who wish to receive it. She has taught in New York, Florida, California and in South America for the past 18. Juliana believes yoga is the "house of no judgement" where one of the best things a student can do is to practice as often as possible and never give up. Her teaching style comes from a belief in empowerment of the higher self and observance of the yoga ethical rules on and off the mat. She tailors her classes to fit needs of the ones in the room, so everyone in her class receives the maximum benefit from their time spent on the mat. With a background in contemporary dance and awareness through the movement, Juliana blends her artistic experience with her love of yoga, creating a unique space for self-exploration and discovery through the practice and power of yoga. Juliana believes that the highest we go, the easier it gets as we walk the path of yoga. After offering her classes widely across the globe, Juliana put roots down and opened Yoga Path for Healing in Catskill in 2017.Jacquelyn Nash is a yoga teacher and co-owner of The Yoga House. With her roots and practice firmly grounded in the Ashtanga lineage, Jacquelyn's classes draw from the foundational principles of that practice but also incorporate the softer and therapeutic applications of yoga that she has absorbed through various trainings. Jacquelyn teaches with the intention to make yoga accessible to all people and to demystify the “secret language” of yoga. Inspired by the light-heartedness but also sincerity of many of her teachers, Jacquelyn's approach to sharing yoga is nurturing, compassionate, and seasoned with a touch of humor. Jacquelyn also owns and manages Hudson Valley Wedding Yoga, which organizes yoga classes for weddings, bachelorette parties, and special events.Carisa Borrello is the director and owner of The Living Seed, which opened its doors to the Hudson Valley Community in the summer of 2000. Carisa is certified in Sivananda Yoga, Somatic Yoga, Yoga Tune Up®, completed the Forrest Yoga foundation course and two Advanced Teacher Training Courses with Ana Forrest, Gil Headly's 6 Day Human Dissection Workshop and is initiated into the path of Andean Mysticism with Elizabeth Jenkins and Don Juan Nunez Del Prado. She is a certified Hanna Somatic Educator (CHSE) from The Novato Institute for Somatic Research and Training, and a level 6 Student and level 1 Instructor of I Liq Chuan, the Martial Art of Awareness, a family style Kung Fu based on principles of Tai Chi and Zen philosophy. Carisa is eternally grateful for the devotion, wisdom and insight that all of her teachers and ancestors have shared with her. Their passion for their arts, for healing the human spirit and mending the hoop of the people are a daily inspiration. She is honored to practice and share the art of  Hanna Somatics, Yoga and the Internal Arts- they are gifts - bringing us back to ourselves so we can heal, love and grow to express our highest potential. Carisa creates a sanctuary, a sacred place for people to deepen their relationship to their spirits through movement, mindfulness, meditation and creative expression.Today these ladies share how and why they got into yoga, how they became yoga teachers and then eventually yoga studio owners. We checked in on how they are doing business now with COVID forcing the closing of their physical spaces. They are all offering classes virtually and in person outdoors with some on demand options at the Living Seed and The Yoga House. They of course also offer private sessions and if you were inspired by Carisa's sharing of Hanna Somatics, she is also doing private sessions outdoors at her home and her studio which for pain management and other needs. They happily share how yoga has changed their lives for the better and offer ways to stay connected to the present moment versus in fear or anxiety during these uncertain times we are all navigating.Because we broadcast out of Kingston, NY, I wanted to also recognize the other Kingston based studios, The Hot Spot offering outdoor and online classes, and Yoga Lab offering online classes.Today's show was engineered Nick Panken host of Freedom Highway from radiokingston.orgOur show music is from Shana Falana !!!Feel free to email me, say hello: she@iwantwhatshehas.orgLeave me a voicemail with your thoughts or a few words about who has what you want and why! For me, yoga therapy is the culmination of a lifelong cultivation of creativity in the context of healing and yoga. When I was a young adult I was in a car accident that synergistically helped me to discover my drive to be in the health field contributing to people’s truest self. Contrary to my younger self’s perspective, I now realize that the summer I healed from the car accident was actually quite tumultuous and left me feeling disheveled and disoriented with my world around me. But I am forever grateful for this because it set me on this path towards becoming a yoga therapist. In the military my aptitude for the medical field landed me a role as a medic. The rigid structure of the military stifle my creativity which made me realize that further searching was needed to find my best place in the health field. This experience enabled me to realize the importance of one the missing pieces of myself: creativity. There were a few years that I experimented with becoming a Medic One Medic, working hard at school at community college towards Nursing, getting my CNA certificate at Green River CC.  All the while realizing that I am meant to strongly and nonjudgmentally hold space for people rather than diagnose and operate on them. A health concern  in my early 20’s lead me to discover yoga and its benefits. I found Sivananda Yoga classes to be calming and provide almost immediate relief to my symptoms. My commitment to yoga expanded to other classes, videos, festivals and seminars on various topics. At a yoga festival in Vancouver I discovered Eoin Finn and realized creativity can come through in yoga as happy, positive, playful movements. Around the same time frame I discovered one of my current mentors Hemalayaa Behl dance yogini. These uplifting experiences inspired me to become a yoga teacher. There was a short transition between knowing I wanted to teach and knowing I was to become a yoga therapist. I spent years studying different types of yoga healing for myself. I took a chronic pain class for healing my back injuries, only to discover a plethora of other things going on inside of me that needed to be healed as well. I went to yoga therapist, Laura Humpf, and discovered that all of my answers were available if I just listened to my deeper self within. She had a way of showing me how to access those hidden spaces inside. Through yoga I restored my physical self and released the effects of car injuries and both familial and relational emotional abuse. After dating an alcoholic, I figured out that I have a gift of listening and picking up the subtleties of others. I recommitted myself to becoming a yoga therapist. Because of my own traumas in my past, I am able to see the importance of doing things gently and with mindfulness, especially in being present with other people. My approach can be especially helpful for clients that have severe traumas they are working through, or big life changes. In my practice I work with clients looking to find mind-body connection, release past traumas, and integrate parts of themselves into their present life. As a 600 hour Certified Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapist, I combine assisted yoga postures with bodywork, talk therapy, and meditation all into one lovely package that is unique to each individual in their present moment. I bring creativity to this healing process, and meet each individual where they’re at.

Leslie reveals how his outlook on life was transformed when he swapped the spiritual and esoteric teachings of the Sivananda Yoga tradition for the more pragmatic and worldly approach adopted by Desikachar.   [43.13] Leslie’s attitude to enlightenment. He expresses his doubts about the concept of enlightenment and admits to regarding the longed-for dissolution of the self as a  somewhat dubious goal.    [48.33] The significance of suffering. Leslie refers to a conversation with Desikachar which made him realize that awareness of the inevitability of suffering provides a powerful motivation for the practice of yoga.    [52.05] Breathing into the body. Following Desikachar’s advice, Leslie helps people to heal physically and emotionally by teaching them how to breathe energy and prana into every part of their bodies.    [59.36] Respect for the individual. For our 33rd episode, I sat down with Melissa McLaughlin. Melissa is yoga and meditation teacher here in the Bay Area, but also has a background of Personal training, so her classes are grounded in exercise science and anatomy. She has experienced many different challenges and used yoga as part of her healing process. We recently sat down to talk about life and I was amazed by her journey so I thought it would be interesting to sit down and talk about it on the podcast.5 BIGGEST TAKEAWAYS OF THIS EPISODE1. Healing is a recognition of your own wholeness. You're not doing yoga to make yourself more perfect. You're doing yoga to realize that you are already perfect and whole, as you are. 2. Yoga is not the medicine or the solution to the problem, but it affects the way you experience and face the challenges, and it helps you body to allow any healing you need to have to unfold.3. Look for a teacher that inspires you, encourage you to modify as you need, empowers you, doesn't take credit for your self-development and helps you take responsibility for your own choices and healing.4. Move at a pace that allows you to pay attention to the subtlety of your breath and your body, to get off auto-pilot.5. Progression and variability is the best way to stay physically safe in your yoga practice.QUESTIONS SHE ANSWERED DURING THE EPISODE : Our subject of today is yoga and healing, can you tell us a bit more about the challenges you faced in the last few years and your journey through that healing process. What does healing mean to you in the context?Do you think yoga helps because it affect the way you see challenges or helps your body to allow the healing to take placeHow can listeners know if the class, the teacher or the format is the right fit for them, the right container that would allow their healing to take place? How can yoga help us feel embodied, reconnect to ourselves and be able to listen to the messages of our body? What’s the role of the nervous system in healing, and how can we tap into that aspect through yoga? Physically, how can students stay safe and how can teacher offer a safe practice?Anything else you’d like to add before we wrap it up? Her yoga journey began in 2008 when she discovered and fell in love with the Sivananda Yoga lineage. The blend of simple yoga postures, breathing practices, and devotional chanting resonated deeply with her curious, philosophical nature. After years of dedicated practice with some of the West's most senior yoga teachers, Melissa took her first formal teacher training where she became fascinated with the structure of the human body and went on to intensively study Western Exercise Science and Anatomy which deeply influences the way she approaches teaching asana. You can find her teaching weekly classes throughout Marin County that are both accessible and challenging and leave plenty of time for stillness and reflection. On her teaching Melissa believes, “My job as a teacher is to share the tools of this practice with clarity and accessibility and create enough space for the magic of yoga. My sincere hope is that this practice encourages you to listen to, find confidence in, and seek guidance from your greatest teacher, you.”Learn more about her here : Her Website : www.melissamclaughlinyoga.comInstagram : @melissamclaughlinyoga** Edited and mastered by Alexandre Saba See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

This podcast is a recording of a Sivananda Yoga Class.  Please listen to the class and practice along.  You can see our website for more details on the practice.  Enjoy! 1. Beginning prayer and a short relaxation (savasana) 2. Breathing (Pranayama) (15 – 20 minutes) 3. Sun salutations (Surya namaskar) 4. The 12 basic yoga poses (asanas) 5. Some additional yoga poses (asanas) and variations 5a. An example of a properly sequenced yoga practice session 6. Final Relaxation (15 minutes) 7. Ending prayers8. General Guidelines to follow in a Yoga Class 9. Benefits of the Yoga Poses and Pranayama practice General Guidelines Place & Setting Eat at least 2 hours before the asana session.  It is difficult to perform asanas with a full stomach.  Also, do not eat or drink half an hour after the session. The best time is early morning, after meditation. Find a cool and ventilated, quiet place with an even, level floor.  The best place is a space reserved for Yoga and meditation, with an altar.  It is suggested not to do Yoga in the bedroom as the energy is more tamasic. It is better to practice in silence without music or chanting. Group performance of asanas brings about awareness of collective energy. Wear light and loose fitting cotton clothing for better efficiency of movement. Use a sticky Yoga mat for better grip. Order, Timing & Rythm Perform the sequence of the postures in order.  This will ensure the proper flow of energy. Try to hold each posture for at least one minute to three minutes.  It is said that holding for three minutes is the minimum time required to get all the benefits of the postures. The sequence of the postures follows the chakras, stimulating the chakras from the top down. The headstand cycle goes first and the standing cycle goes last because of the spiritual principle of turning inward first to find inner balance (headstand inverts all energies, stimulating the highest chakra, going against normal tendencies, after which the energy is flowing properly) then tuning the mind outward and trying to achieve balance and composition with worldly activities (standing postures are performed with the focus on external object to ground oneself). Practice daily, or at least 4 times a week, for 1-2 hours for maximum benefit. Breath & Mind Awareness Breathe consciously during the performance of postures.  When holding the posture, the breath becomes calm and the mind focused. When holding, know where to concentrate for the specific posture. If there is tension, focus your attention on the tension, breathe consciously while focusing on the area, sending prana to the muscles or ligaments, and during every exhalation try to progress a little more. Keep the mind inspired by being aware of the physical and mental benefits of each posture. Yoga is not a competition, so try to do what you can but observe your limit.  Always try to feel comfortable.  Never push yourself to the point of pain, strain or exhaustion. Do not compare or compete with each other when perform in group. Body Awareness Gentle modifications, adjustments and variations can be included if you experience any pain or strain while holding an asana. Some accessible examples include chair yoga, gentle yoga and restorative yoga. Click here to learn more about specialized yoga practices. Be aware of your body throughout the session.  Keep your mind focused inward and enjoy the practice. Always relax in between the postures, with deep breathing to restore the prana and avoid fatigue. If there is no time, stick to the basic 12 postures without variations, you will still get the maximum benefit. Asana Considerations For beginners, take the time to practice headstand by preparing your arm strength with Dolphin. Achieve balance through posture and counter posture, on both the right and left sides, holding the postures on each side for an equal length of time. If you do variations, make sure that you have time for the basic postures first.  Do not skip postures. Try to practice asanas with eyes closed, creating an inner focus. If possible, it is better to perform the asanas without any props.  It is a very natural way of exercising. To maximize the benefit of the session, keep the energy internalized and calm and do not rush right away into worldly activities. Always spend at least 10 minutes in Savasana at the end; it allows you to integrate all of the benefits. Do not take a bath right away but allow the prana to remain for some time.

This episode was recorded in my hometown of New Plymouth with duo Ram and Bhavani Davies who together run the Sivananda Yoga center. Before we jump into the conversation however, here is a little a background about New Plymouth. New Plymouth is a small town on the West Coast of the North Island of New Zealand. It is the capital of Taranaki province, colloquially known as "The Naki". It also happens to be the town where I was born. It is a small town with a population of less than 50,000, and it is a rural center in a dairy producing region, which is also fueled by the local oil and gas industry. As you will hear during this interview, Back beach is a very popular surfing spot, right under the ever present watch of the beautiful Mount Taranaki. In fact the Lonely Planet recently selected Taranaki as the second best region in the world, which has attracted a wave of backpacker tourists, drawn by the surf and snow. While I grew up, New Plymouth was a fairly conservative place, so I was pleasantly surprised when I came back recently and discovered that there was a thriving yoga and meditation scene! The last I counted there are at least 6 Yoga and Meditation studios in the small seaside town. I attended a class with Bhavani at Barclay Hall a while back, and it was a gentle traditional and meditative practice which left me feeling fantastic, so I was really looking forward to catching up with them. In this conversation we will learn about what lead the two of them to yoga, to each other and to New Plymouth! We will discover their philosophy on teaching and finding your own voice in a traditional style, and they offer advice on those who are thinking of starting teaching, or opening their own studio!
