Film Critic and writer, Lex Briscuso joins Nicole and Ryan to talk about the 2006 Sophia Coppola film, Marie Antoinette and it's iconic soundtrack. The soundtrack pulls from the 80s, 90s, and aughts with tracks from Gang of Four, Siouxie and the Banshees, The Strokes, Aphex Twin and more! Coppola put the soundtrack together with soundtrack supervisor, Brian Reitzell, who had worked with Coppola on her previous films, Lost in Translation and The Virgin Suicides. We previously talked about Reitzell in our Stranger than Fiction episode. We talk about how important of a role the soundtrack plays in the film and we share some of our favorite needle drops. We also talk about how Aphex Twin's song, Avril 14th, found a weird 2nd life after appearing in the film. For More Information about Lex Briscuso:IG: https://www.instagram.com/nikonamericaTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/nikonamericaIf you'd like to support Soundtrack Your Life, we have a Patreon, where you'll get bonus episodes and more! This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Podscribe - https://podscribe.com/privacySpotify Ad Analytics - https://www.spotify.com/us/legal/ad-analytics-privacy-policy/Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy

Ryan, Brandice and Nicole talk about the soundtrack to the 2006 Marc Forster film, Stranger than Fiction. The soundtrack was originally promoted as a Britt Daniel score, but it turns out that Brian Reitzell co-scored the film with Daniel as well as helming the role of soundtrack supervisor. They chat about the many Spoon songs included in the film, including the song "The Book I Write", which was written specifically for the film. They also discuss one of the pivotal scenes in the film where Will Ferrell covers Wreckless Eric's "Whole Wild World" in what may be one the more touching scenes in Will Ferrell's career, and they talk about how the film doesn't feel very 2006 and how the soundtrack plays a role in that feeling.

Ford A. Thaxton Interview. With a hand in producing soundtracks going back to GNP Crescendo's first-ever Star Trek release, Ford A. Thaxton has worked on more albums than he can count, including: the expanded soundtrack to "Encounter at Farpoint," Star Trek: The Next Generation, Volumes One and Two; Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Volume One; Star Trek: Enterprise, Volume One; Battlestar Galactica; and Frankenhooker. In this episode of Melodic Treks, host Brandon-Shea Mutala is joined by Ford to discuss some of the memorable film and television soundtracks he has produced, such as those for Blade Runner, The Twilight Zone, and Zulu Dawn. Ford also talks about becoming a radio DJ at the age of 16, creating his own record label, his dream composer for the new Trek series, and his opinion on the possibility of Brian Reitzell getting that gig. I'm back with the first of several podcasts, after taking an extended break to finish up a new experimental doc, BSV 1172. 2016 starts with an interview with the esteemed Brian Reitzell on scoring NBC’s Hannibal, of which music from Season 3 was recently released digitally and on CD from Lakeshore Records and on LP via Invada Records. Reitzell also discusses musique concrete, working with David Slade, Tangerine Dream, and using vintage analogue synthesizers. This interview is also available as a visual podcast. Visit KQEK.com for more info. Additional info on the making of the visual podcast (which involved a vintage video synthesizer) is available at my filmmaking site, Big Head Amusements. The (Musical) Mirror Universe. Alternate melodies? Alternate keys? You never know what you'll find on the soundscape of the Mirror Universe. In this episode of Melodic Treks, host Brandon-Shea Mutala responds to Meta Treks 16: "All the Bubbles," which was itself a response to Standard Orbit 115: "Wibbly Wobbly Primey Wimey," as he takes you on a musical journey into the Mirror Universe. We play music from "In a Mirror Darkly," "Mirror, Mirror," "The Visitor," Star Trek (2009), and Star Trek Into Darkness as we explore alternate timelines, alternate dimensions, and alternate futures. Brandon also shares music by three composers who he wishes would score the next Star Trek Series: Bear McCreary, Ramin Djawadi and Brian Reitzell. (Can you tweet #reitzellfortrek2017?) TV Eyes was a short lived supergroup featuring Jason Falkner & Roger Manning Jr, who spent time in the power pop band Jellyfish, and drummer Brian Reitzell, who was in the equally melodic Redd Kross. The trio teamed up in the early 2000’s for a debut record that combined elements of early New Wave & Punk, with touches of their previous bands. The result was an album that should’ve turned heads. But, the band was never able to secure an American record label, so the record only came out in Japan. Now, long out of print and fetching top dollar on Ebay, Omnivore Recordings finally sets things right with the release of TV Eyes – not only including the original, nine song record, but also featuring four bonus tracks from an even more rare Japanese EP, Softcore, featuring remixes. We talk to Jason Falkner about the inspiration behind the project, plus what it was like to record with one of his big influences, Paul McCartney.

In May 2014, the video game company Ubisoft released Watch Dogs, about a vigilante hacker in Chicago in the near future. Here's how the game is described on their website: "You play as Aiden Pearce, a brilliant hacker and former thug, whose criminal past led to a violent family tragedy. While seeking justice for those events, you'll monitor and hack those around you." It sold over 4 million copies in its first week of release. The music for the game was made by Brian Reitzell, who played drums in the bands Air and Red Kross before becoming a composer and music supervisor for films like Lost In Translation and Beginners. He also creates the music for the NBC television show Hannibal. In this episode, Brian talks about the unique challenges posed by scoring video games, where players control what happens on screen and as a result, what happens in the music. He'll break down a piece called Donovan, which he wrote for a chase sequence within the game. He also describes the instrument he created from a hundred year old piano. This episode is presented in conjunction with Polygon.

You're driving, and it's dark and it's raining, and you're on the edge of the city and you've been driving all night. And you took a turn back there but you're not sure it was the right turn. But you took the turn anyway, just kept going in that direction. And somehow it looks sort of familiar, so you just keep driving. Hello. Excuse me. Can you tell me where I am? You've been on this road before. You can read the signs. You can feel your way. You can do this in your sleep. This is a mix I did for the good folks at Intergalactic.FM.  Head over there for this and a ton of other mixes and radio shows. Like most of my mixes there is a starting point or inspiration that gets the ball rolling.  In this case it was the Laurie Anderson track "Lighting Out For The Territories" from her United States Live album.  The cut is so atmospheric and moody.  It immediately conjures up images of lonely highways, lonely songs and tires thumping on the pavement. I had a hard time deciding between cuts that have a lonely country, twangy feel and songs that are more pulsating, driving electronic in nature.  In the end I ended up with a little bit of everything.  The two tracks with vocals definitely have a lonely, plaintive quality.  That same feel is also present in the Daniel Lanois tunes and the instrumental from The Antlers(whose new album is fantastic by the way). The tracks from Prins Thomas and Brian Reitzell are of the more electronic driving type.  Both have an old kraut rock feel to them that I love.  A totally different feel is found in pieces by Terminal Sound System and Talvihorros, sort of weird Twins Peaks vibe.  Which makes sense because the Talvihorros track is actually the Twin Peaks theme.  Most of the rest of the tunes just sort of felt right for a theme of night driving. Laurie Anderson makes 4 or 5 appearances in the mix.  All are variations of the opening track. Usually with other rhythms or road sounds added in. Enjoy.
