Comedian Craig Shoemaker returns to the show and comedian Heather Pasternak makes her ACS debut. They open the show by talking about Adam traveling cross country with Indian food. Then they discuss dumb freeway signs and what they should be replaced with. They also take a look back at some terrible Gavin Newsom takes from his appearance on the show, and discuss Dr. Fauci's take on the presidential debate. Next, Heather Pasternak reads the news including stories about Joe Biden blaming his poor debate performance on being tired, and a Dutch couple's “duo euthanasia.” Then, the writer/director/star of the new movie “Ride”, Jake Allyn, and his co-star, C. Thomas Howell, join the show to talk rodeos, bull riding helmets and much more. Allister Thompson returns to Derry and Toms as we hurtle back to 1918 and brave the cold waters of the Atlantic to take a look at The Land That Time Forgot by Edgar Rice Burroughs, subject of Michael Moorcock's sole filmed movie script (along with James Cawthron of course). Expect discussions about mysterious island tropes, personal propensities to cannibalism, dodgy theories of race and C Thomas Howell! Allister's latest release (at time of posting this at least) is Apocalypse Man by Khan Tengri and it includes a nice Moorcockian track too.

This week my good friend and native Coloradan Kathleen Belew drops in to talk about the movie that etched the word "wolverines" into our lives forever: Red Dawn. We talk about how Red Dawn depicts Cold War fears on the big screen, and how it has been perceived in the *checks notes* forty years since its release. As usual, Kathleen and I talk about where to get the best food in Colorado, skiing, and god knows what else. This is a pod you've been asking for. I hope you like it.About our guest:Kathleen Belew is a historian, author, and teacher. She specializes in the history of the present. She spent ten years researching and writing her first book, Bring the War Home: The White Power Movement and Paramilitary America (Harvard, 2018, paperback 2019). In it, she explores how white power activists created a social movement through a common story about betrayal by the government, war, and its weapons, uniforms, and technologies. By uniting Ku Klux Klan, neo-Nazi, skinhead, and other groups, the movement mobilized and carried out escalating acts of violence that reached a crescendo in the 1995 bombing of Oklahoma City. This movement was never adequately confronted, and remains a threat to American democracy. Her next book, Home at the End of the World, illuminates our era of apocalypse through a history focused on her native Colorado where, in the 1990s, high-profile kidnappings and murders, right-wing religious ideology, and a mass shooting exposed rents in America's social fabric, and dramatically changed our relationship with place, violence, and politics (Random House).Belew has spoken about Bring the War Home in a wide variety of places, including The Rachel Maddow Show, The Last Word With Lawrence O'Donnell, AC 360 with Anderson Cooper, Frontline, Fresh Air, and All Things Considered. Her work has featured prominently in documentaries such as Homegrown Hate: The War Among Us (ABC) and Documenting Hate: New American Nazis (Frontline). Belew is an Associate Professor of History at Northwestern University. She earned tenure at the University of Chicago in 2021, where she spent seven years. Her research has received the support of the Chauncey and Marion Deering McCormick Foundation, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and the Jacob K. Javits Foundation. Belew earned her BA in the Comparative History of Ideas from the University of Washington, where she was named Dean's Medalist in the Humanities. She earned a doctorate in American Studies from Yale University.

In Hour 2 of Robby & Rexrode, the guys chatted with C. Thomas Howell. actor turned musician, discussed the future of John Hynes with the Preds and the other potential NHL Head Coaching vacancies!
The legendary C. Thomas Howell has captivated audiences for over five decades. I remember being 12 years old and copying his character's lines and actions, staring into a mirror. Movies were the key that unlocked my imagination and transported me into their limitless worlds. From defending against Russian invaders in Red Dawn—where my friends and I found inspiration for our "Wolverines" crew—to facing off against the Soc's in Coppola's The Outsiders, Howell's characters consistently served as my gateway to these incredible cinematic universes. With an impressive portfolio of over 200 films and TV shows, Tommy embodies the cowboy ethos and a relentless work ethic that has seen him tackle everything from leading roles in studio films to fending off aliens in lower-budget sci-fi flicks. In today's interview, Tommy reveals that it's often the latter where he learned the most. Navigating stardom while discovering his identity, Tommy has a treasure trove of behind-the-scenes stories and Hollywood pop culture experiences to share. From auditioning for E.T. and working with Coppola, to his time on Southland and Criminal Minds, he candidly discusses the ups and downs of being a journeyman actor with grace and humor. This fall, Tommy takes on his favorite role yet in the Netflix show "Obliterated." We also talk about his journey into being a singer/songwriter and his new album American Storyteller. We are beyond excited to share this episode with you, filled with inspiration and good vibes. You can listen on platforms like Apple or Spotify—just remember to like, subscribe, and share. Drop a comment with your guest suggestions, and if you're new to our podcast, this is the perfect episode to start with.
Welcome to Tulsa Talks presented by Tulsa Regional Chamber. I'm your host Tim Landes. It's been over three years since Danny Boy O'Connor opened The Outsiders House Museum, 731 N. St. Louis Ave. In that time thousands of fans of S.E. Hinton's book and Francis Ford Coppola's movie have visited the museum. On the eve of the 40th anniversary of the movie's release, Danny Boy sat down on the living room couch and talked about the impact the museum has had since opening in August 2019, plus how he hasn't stopped adding to it. He's still searching for props, costumes, cars and memorabilia pertaining to the Hinton movie universe because he has bigger dreams you'll hear about on this episode. He discusses the popularity of the tours with students (10,000 students this year!) and fans and talks about the growing inventory of items available inside the gift shop. The California transplant also talks about why Tulsa is so great after seven years of calling it home. Film, we will also discuss the major source of the movie, the 1974 historical fiction novel the [00:01:00] killer angels by Michael Shara and the prelude to the.We have much to talk about. So let's get right to it. If you have a historical movie you love or hate, let me know, and maybe we can make an episode for Hollywood hates history. I have a few other movies in the works with Scott rank and others. If you'd like to participate in Hollywood, hates history, send me an email to steve@atozhistorypage.com.I'd love to hear from you. Thanks again for listening and I will see you next time beyond the big screen.welcome back today. We are talking about the great movie from 1993 Gettysburg. So today I'm going to be the host, but, um, we have two great. Guests, but we're all kind of in on this [00:02:00] together. I'm Steve Guerra and I host the history of the papacy podcast as well as beyond the big screen podcast. I'm joined by James early and Sean MacGyver, Sean MacGyver is of the come and take a Texas history podcast. And James early is a professor from San Jacinto college who is an. Time's collaborator with Scott rank on his history unplugged podcast. Uh, it took a little doin, but we all came together. Are you excited to talk about Gettysburg? I am totally excited. I've been wanting to do this for a long time. I'm so glad we're finally doing it.Uh, why don't we just get we'll jump straight into it. James. Can you tell us a little bit about the background? Um, the book and the movie Gettysburg? Yes. The, uh, movie Gettysburg is based on a novel called the [00:03:00] killer angels, which was written in 1974, published in 1974 by Michael Shera or shore. I'm not really sure how that's pronounced.I think it shares is Shara, Shara. Okay. S H a R a. Uh, it was Michael Shara is kind of an interesting person. He was a writer in the 50, 60 seventies, eighties, a little bit. He wrote primarily science fiction and sports fiction, not too much historical fiction. He had four novels of which the killer angels is his second. And it's his only novel that is. Uh, historical fiction as a side note, it's interesting that he also wrote the book for love of the game, which was turned into a movie with Kevin Costner. But anyway, I don't want to get too far off track, but the killer angels was very well-received. It won the Pulitzer prize in 1975 and Shara, after he, after he wrote his fourth novel for love of the game killer angels was the second [00:04:00] one. After that he. Just wrote, well, actually not much of anything, if anything. And then he died in 1998. Uh, interestingly enough, after that his son, Jeff, Sharon, or Shara, uh, took up the torch and wrote a pre-qual called gods and generals and a sequel called the last full measure, making a civil war trilogy. And then Jeff Shaara went on to write many, many, many more historical novels, but. Going back to the killer angels. What's interesting about the killer angels is it tells the story of the battle of Gettysburg through the. And the thoughts of some of the major commanders on both sides. For example, there are chapters devoted to Robert Lee.What he is seeing, what he's thinking. There are chapters devoted to James Long street on the union side. The primary character is Colonel Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, who was the commander of the 20th Maine regiment. One of the key regiments on day two of the. [00:05:00] And there are other characters, of course, that are brought into it as well, but he really does a great job in the book.Putting you inside the mind of these commanders and what they were thinking and what they were feeling, what they were hoping to do, hoping to accomplish it's it's fiction. Of course, it's not a, it's not a regular history book. It's a, it's a historical novel, but I think Shera does or Shara, it's going to take me several times to get used to that, but, uh, it's it, he really.I think it's, it's a very accurate novel. A lot of the speeches and the dialogues are just made up, but others are based on things that these men wrote in their diaries or their letters or their memoirs. Uh, so it's a, it's a fantastic novel. I'm not going to lie. I'm just going to go ahead and lay my cards up ahead of time.I love this book. I love this book so much. I've read it probably five or six times, and I love this movie. This is one of my all time. Favorite movies. Of any genre, but anyways, so [00:06:00] that's the killer angels, the killer angels. It took them a while to make it into a movie, but the movie was made by Ted Turner and Ted Turner. It was going to be a mini series, but they decided to make it into a movie. And the movie itself is extremely long. In fact, I read that it's the longest feature film ever to be made and shown in movie theaters. Clocks in at about four hours and 15 minutes. There's an extended version. That's even longer. If it just in case four hours at 15 minutes is not long enough for you. But I remember when it came out, I was in grad school the first time. Uh, and I went and saw it, the theater. I think I was all by myself. My wife says, there's no way I'm going to watch a four hour movie war movie. So I went and saw it in the theater twice. So that's just how nerdy and how crazy I am, but I've always been a civil war nut. So, so the movie stars, it has an all-star cast it it's, it's an amazing cast. The primary [00:07:00] character on the. Confederate side is actually James Long street and he is played by Tom Berenger. Who's been in platoon and many, many other movies.Uh, Robert Lee. Another of the major characters he's played by Martin sheen. Everybody knows who Martin sheen is. He's been in films for several decades and many that he was on the west wing for many years. The TV show on the union side, the primary character is Colonel Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain. Who's played by Jeff Daniels. Also a veteran actor. Who's been in a million things and let's see, who am I leaving out among the major characters? Yeah, Sam Elliot, how can I leave out Sam Elliott, dog on it? Sam Elliott, if you don't know who Sam Elliott is, uh, just turn off this podcast right now and go do some research. Go watch like 10, 10 of his movies.Sam Elliott is a legend. He's been in many westerns as well as other movies. Yeah, it was in the big Lebowski. He played the cowboy and he was the narrator. He [00:08:00] was in a, they were, we were soldiers, uh, the Vietnam movie with El Gibson. He was. Gosh, he's been so many things. He was in the original Hulk movie.Uh, the one that was didn't it had Edward Norton, I think, or I don't know. I don't know. That was, he was in the original one with, uh, uh, direct. Okay. So yeah, he was the general, but anyway, uh, so great cast. There's a lot of other people, C Thomas Howell is in it. Uh, Jordan Richard Jordan plays Lewis arm Armistead, and this was his last role.Uh, you can tell he was dying of cancer and you could definitely tell he was not well. Uh, but he's such a, if you've seen, you know, Richard Jordan, if you've watched the hunt for red October, he's the, uh, he's the national security. No way really. I don't have to go back and watch that again. Folks, Sean is like Mr.Movie. He is a walking film and cyclic was in it too. There's a James Bond in there. You have to look [00:09:00]

After an eye-catching performance in the teen coming-of-age epic The Outsiders (1983), ex-child rodeo star C. Thomas Howell was one a promising young actor in the mid-1980s.When Tommy isn't acting, you'll more than likely find Howell out on the ranch with his horses, Trick and Wesley. As an accomplished team-roper, you'll see that his passion for rodeo runs deep as he's been competing since he was four-years old! Tommy also enjoys a good game of golf, playing his guitar and writing songs and spending as much time as possible on the ranch and being with his family. Christopher Thomas Howell was born in Los Angeles to Candice (Webb) and Chris Howell (a professional bull rider turned stuntman). He started working in the film industry at the age of seven. (1984), alongside Jamie Lee Curtis, and the violent Cold War invasion drama Red Dawn (1984). His career was not helped by the controversial racial comedy Soul Man (1986), which was not well-received. However, he did meet and fall in love with his co-star from that movie, Rae Dawn Chong, whom he later married. He has notched up in excess of 90 feature film appearances. including starring roles in Side Out (1990), Gettysburg (1993), Baby Face Nelson (1996), Fatal Affair (1998), Asylum Days (2001) and Hoboken Hollow (2006).He played unpredictable Officer Bill "Dewey" Dudek in the TNT drama series Southland (2009) and as the sadistic serial killer "The Reaper" on CBS's Criminal Minds (2005). There have been a lot of animated Justice League movies, and in this episode Perry is joined by author Gordon Dymowski to discuss one of the oddest ones of all. Justice League: Gods and Monsters featured Bruce Timm's return to the DC characters, except this Justice League is composed of General Zod's son, Kirk Langstrom, and Bekka of the Fourth World. It's an interesting and somewhat strange addition to the canon that doesn't quite work so well.Buy or rent this movie on AmazonThis episode is sponsored by Audible, where you can listen to thousands of audiobooks, podcasts, and original content. This is ultimate "YA for boys" (although it is written by a woman); it's also deeply nostalgic and kinda terrifying.Expect comparisons to our previous discussion on Stephen King's The Body/Stand By Me, talk about whose story this really is and why Hinton's staunch refusal of a queer reading is misguided. The amount of times we've lavished (well-deserved) praise on Rutger Hauer is, well, frankly unacceptable. This movie isn't his first rodeo in Hollywood but man does he bring the big guns (...or, knives, or explosives)! Starring opposite is C Thomas Howell, fresh off success from The Outsiders and Red Dawn, and likely nursing a sore ego from losing out on Marty McFly to both Eric Stoltz and Michael J Fox. Sit back, relax, and don't pick up that guy on the side of the road while you listen to our newest episode of the 5th Wall Podcast!

This week we cover a group of lesser known movies. The "Hitcher" franchise has three films total. The first (starring Rutger Hauer, C Thomas Howell and Jennifer Jason Leigh) premiered in 1986. It was followed by "Hitcher 2" in 2003 and a remake of the first movie in 2007. If you like car chase movies, explosions, and severed limbs check them out. There are some great scenes. Since the hitcher knocks off victims on isolated roads in West Texas, I thought it might be appropriate to highlight a recipe from the region. West Texas Asado is pork slow cooked in pork slow cooked in red chile sauce. It’s similar to New Mexico’s carne adovada, except adovada is made with New Mexican red chiles and asado is made with anchos. Cook time is 4 hours. You might also try making your own traditional disc (also called a Mexican wok or cowboy wok) or cook in a Dutch oven or skillet. See the recipe from HomeSickTexan.com here Photo Credit: Here

Happy October and early Halloween! The Johns kick off a month of horror with the cult classic, The Hitcher. Listen as Longino tries to guess the entire plot of a film he knows next to nothing about. And Nelson remains cagey with the details to not spoil the fun. Will the movie get two hitchin' thumbs up? Or will it be one ride the Johns wish they never took? Listen and find out!
Soul Man is Joey's challenge to Scott this week. Although we deem the film very tame for all the controversy it received back in the 80's there still is the fact that it's C. Thomas Howell in black face.

We read S.E. Hinton's novel in school. We got caught up in the tale of the greasers vs. the socs. Francis Ford Coppola brought it to the big screen and brought one of the biggest young ensemble casts of the 80's. Names like Howell, Swayze, Lowe, and Cruise co-starred and all of them went on to lengthy careers of various quality. We take a look at them all and talk about our favourite moments in their resumes. But first, we first catch you up with what we've been watching as Chris has a hard time being positive about his latest viewings including getting really mad about Kevin Smith. Meantime, Josh talks about Zack Snyder's takes on Superman and gets all "women in chains" with Pam Grier and Margaret Markov Plus much more! Thanks for listening! Exactly 3 years ago to the day we posted our first official Dr.Action and the Kick Ass Kid commentary 'Dark Angel (A.K.A. I Come In Peace)' and we're still here! So help us celebrate our anniversary with an ALL NEW commentary. Yes we are back ladies and germs, back amongst the exploding hallways of PM Entertainment with The Sweeper! It's a film in which C Thomas Howell, of all people, joins a shady underground vigilante squad. While working with them he kills absolutely everyone he meets, beds a hot, mad woman and avoids all the explosions PM Entertainment can throw at him, all so that he can go back to his lucrative job pool cleaning or something. (I may have made a lot of that up). This obviously gives The Doc and The Kid the chance to talk about The Golden Girls whizzing on each other, Bryan Brown's unusual Hollywood inside stories, a new, oral sex based, confection and much much more!We also review Run All Night the latest Neeson action thriller and discuss a new movie being shot right now in the Philippines, Showdown in Manilla starring some of our favourite B Team action heroes. If you're watching action without us, you're doing it wrong!!Follow us on twitter: @DrActionKickAss Like our Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/DrActionAndTheKickAssKid Shop our store (ALL NEW DESIGNS): http://www.cafepress.com/aftermoviediner/8680529
