The Parable of the Chinese Farmer is one that simply teaches us that we never truly know the consequences of our actions. Can you think of a time when you jump to conclusions and imagine all the worst-case scenarios even before they happened? Well, that, my friend, is part of making assumptions. If you want to be an effective leader, you must learn how to stop making assumptions. Otherwise, you risk harming your credibility and workplace relationships. Issues come up when a leaders responds to a situation in the absence of sufficient knowledge – particularly when emotions are high. Similarly, expectations are typically fueled by an emotion and when that expectation is not met, we feel let down. When we set goals, we provide time to develop strategy and execution plans to achieve them instead of having unrealistic expectations that are thoughtlessly assessed in the moment. In today's podcast, you'll learn how to address three meaningful topics to enhance your leadership. Dr. Eric Bean discusses (1) how to avoid treating assumptions as facts, (2) how to understand the difference between expectations and goals, and (3) how to remove or limit judgements. The story of the Chinese farmer by Alan Watts serves as a reminder that we live in a complex world. And when we can withhold from making immediate judgments about our experiences, challenge our assumptions, manage expectations, and be open to reality, we can find greater inner peace and be more in the flow of life. Key Points: Get clarity that you're making an assumption and then challenge it by asking questions. Embracing the practice of letting go of expectations. Move past the rejection of reality to a place of acceptance. Episode Highlights [0:15] Unraveling the dangers of assumption [1:15] The story of a Chinese Farmer [2:13] The whole process of nature is an integrated process of immense complexity, and it's tough to tell if the consequences result to good or bad [2:40] The practice of removing judgments in one's life [3:31] The three elements that are core to Eric's coaching approach (1) Don't make assumptions, (2) Understand the difference between expectations and goals, (3) The three possible responses to what happens in life [3:49] The idea of making no assumptions  [7:10] You have to recognize that you don't have to believe every thought that comes into your mind [8:18] Not treating our automatic assumptions as data or as truth [8:31] Understanding the difference between expectations and goals [10:21] Expectations should happen, but goals are the target [11:43] Three ways to respond to reality: Reject it, Accept it, or Appreciate it [12:31] Acceptance is simply acknowledging what happened Resources Mentioned: The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom by Don Miguel Ruiz The Happiness Hypothesis Book by Jonathan Haidt

Do you tend to judge situations too quickly? The story of the Chinese Farmer helps us remember to stay open and detached especially when we are struggling. Credit to Alan Watts:The Chinese Farmer StoryOnce upon a time there was a Chinese farmer whose horse ran away. That evening, all of his neighbors came around to commiserate. They said, “We are so sorry to hear your horse has run away. This is most unfortunate.” The farmer said, “Maybe.”The next day the horse came back bringing seven wild horses with it, and in the evening everybody came back and said, “Oh, isn't that lucky. What a great turn of events. You now have eight horses!” The farmer again said, “Maybe.”The following day his son tried to break one of the horses, and while riding it, he was thrown and broke his leg. The neighbors then said, “Oh dear, that's too bad,” and the farmer responded, “Maybe.”The next day the conscription officers came around to conscript people into the army, and they rejected his son because he had a broken leg. Again all the neighbors came around and said, “Isn't that great!” Again, he said, “Maybe.”The whole process of nature is an integrated process of immense complexity, and it's really impossible to tell whether anything that happens in it is good or bad — because you never know what will be the consequence of the misfortune; or, you never know what will be the consequences of good fortune.

In this episode, Shannon and Hoots discuss what it is like getting into a male populated industry to the point of Shannon even changing her name on her resume. Shannon dives into exactly what her purpose on earth is and helps drive an understanding of the term man in Construction. At the end of the day, we are all human. Hoots drops another Japanese word, Ikigai – Japanese concept that refers to giving a person a sense of purpose, a reason for living! Hear the story of the Chinese Farmer and how perspective on the matter is never fully understood due to the complexities of understanding the full system. Shannon helps the Lean Builder nation understand what Lady Voltz is all about! Reach out to her if you're interested in stickers! Hear Shannon pick at the root of why Hoots has a displeasure for the word culture! …and just maybe Lady Voltz herself is converting to at least a deeper understanding of the word itself! Shannon and Hoots get outside their comfort zones on this episode and describe what it is like to move through the comfort zone diagram. Shannon teaches us how to say “Happy Birthday!” in Canadian after Hoots had to be that guy and ask that question! She further discusses her next project where she is writing a book that plays on limericks and rhymes to help introduce skilled trade career opportunities to children younger than is current practice. Reaching beyond middle/high school and into elementary and pre school aged children is paramount at changing the image! Tune in where Ms. Shannon even shares with us her spin on ‘I'm a Little Teapot!' and spells a deeper reason for why she chose that specific rhyme! The learning was real and the time shared was fun! 128: Diego Ugalde Explains that Mistakes Are the Pathway to Growth I invite guests to share personal stories about acts of leadership that help shape their lives. In Episode 127, Diego Ugalde shares a fable by Alan Watts, explains how walking among workers doesn't give you the pulse of employees, and talks about a conversation that he had with his daughter. Prologue As a Navy SEAL, Diego Ugalde served three combat tours in Iraq. He participated in more than 250 highly classified combat and Advanced Special Operations missions. Now retired, Diego is the CEO of The Trident Approach. His team of current and former Navy SEALS teach the best of what they learned from their time in The Teams. They have a Deep Connection to the SELF and to Humanity. 01:03 Part 1: Using a Different Lens Diego shares Alan Watt's story, The Chinese Farmer, and explains why it affected his perspective. 10:42 Part 2: Do You Know Your Own Pulse? Diego questions the claim that, by walking among cubicles, an executive can discover the pulse of his people. Diego explains why this is challenging and mythical. 19:47 Part 3: Mistakes, Curiosity, and Growth Diego takes us on a journey from his attic to a conversation with his daughter and then a discussion about being human. _________________________________ How You Can Support the Show Unlabeled Leadership is a free service for people to learn about leadership. In this episode I talk about the perennial question of life: Why do bad things happen (to ALL people - not just good people.) It's important that we talk about this because we need to develop a mindset that helps us when unwanted things do happen in our lives. This episode includes: The Parable of the Chinese Farmer and how some things that appear to be "bad" can actually turn out to be "good" in the end (and vice versa.) Why we should learn not to label events in our lives as bad or good and think of them instead as unwanted challenges or difficulties. The 1st and 2nd Laws of Thermodynamics and how they can help us look at these events in our lives. A process for experiencing the pain of things falling apart in life. Why it may take years before you can see that an unwanted event has contained or led to anything positive. The importance of tending to your physical well-being, mindset, emotions and spiritual awareness so that you can be a bit more prepared the next time something falls apart in your life. "We spend our lives fighting against entropy to create order, beauty, growth and meaning, hoping it will last forever. But, like everything material in the Universe, it too will one day fall apart." Alan Watts was the first person I heard tell the story of the Chinese Farmer. I talk about how this fable can help us live a life without having to label everything as good or bad. Going beyond binary thinking is the ability to transcend this or that solutions. It requires us to pause and not jump too quickly to conclusions. The tension that comes from trying to label things is an evolution opportunity. We have the ability to hold the tension long enough to evolve into the third element, the realm of exploration with mediating energy. This is where imaginative opportunity lives. Fellowship Reformed Church of Holland

BULLETIN Our 39th Day series continued this week with the story of the Devil’s 40 Day Tempt of Jesus in the wilderness (Luke 13:1-13). Pastor Ross shared three stories to teach on this passage. The first was The Parable of a Chinese Farmer, with an emphasis on not rushing to judgements, but taking time to discern whether we are facing a trial or a temptation. The second story was about a professor’s wisdom for alumni, and the importance of focusing on our identity in Christ because everything else is secondary. The third story used The Parable of a Rope and a Barn as the metaphor of us relying on Christ because we cannot do it ourselves. Pastor Ross said it so well: “Even better than copying Jesus, tie your rope to Him. Sure, we can learn some tricks from Jesus about how to resist temptation in life, but we will never do it perfectly, and we don’t have to, because He did.”In the midst of a 39th Day, discern well, focus on our identity in Christ, and rely on Him.

And, good luck – well enjoy the moment, it’s all you really have – and there’s another moment full of possibility on the way, so don’t be stuck within the moment you are in.
