A Note from James:Oh my gosh. This guy was thrown in jail for 65 years—and he deserved it. You'll hear about his crimes and misdemeanors. He started as a superstar quarterback, high school and college hero turned meth addict, and eventually became a hardcore RICO gang criminal. Sentenced to essentially life in prison, Damon's story is genuinely one of the most inspirational I've heard. He's got a bunch of books out—his latest, Six Dimes and a Nickel: Life Lessons to Empower Change, just came out and refers to the 65-year sentence he received. You need to read this book, which follows his memoir The Change Agent and The Coffee Bean, teaching a simple yet profound lesson about creating positive change. I could have talked to Damon forever about jail, prison fights, criminal life, meth addiction, and most importantly, the transformation that changed everything. By the way, this conversation will change your life, too—I really took a lot from his insights.Episode Description:Damon West was handed a 65-year prison sentence, effectively life behind bars, after spiraling from a promising college quarterback into meth addiction and becoming the leader of a burglary ring. This episode covers the dramatic highs and devastating lows of his journey, from his arrest and brutal introduction to prison violence to his profound transformation inspired by the "coffee bean" metaphor. James and Damon discuss deeply personal stories about addiction, identity, and redemption, offering listeners unique perspectives on overcoming profound adversity and using pain as a catalyst for extraordinary personal growth. What You'll Learn:How identity can become an addiction, and strategies to rebuild after losing itThe "coffee bean" metaphor and how it can help you transform difficult situations into opportunitiesSpecific ways Damon earned respect and survived brutal prison conditions without joining a gangPractical insights from the 12-step recovery program applicable to anyone facing challenging circumstancesHow forgiveness and accountability can become powerful tools for personal changeTimestamped Chapters:[00:00] Introduction to Damon's Story[01:27] Damon's Early Life and Downfall[02:40] Life of Crime and Addiction[17:02] The Arrest and Trial[29:06] The Verdict: 65 Years in Prison[30:25] A Mother's Ultimatum[31:06] Advice from Muhammad[32:19] Surviving Prison Fights[39:33] The Coffee Bean Story[41:38] First Day in Maximum Security[49:00] Earning Respect on the Rec Yard[51:08] Spiritual Awakening and Self-Improvement[55:38] Understanding the Eighth and Ninth Steps[56:31] Living Amends: A Path to Redemption[58:49] The Impact of Crime and Seeking Forgiveness[1:03:56] The Power of Forgiveness[1:10:29] Lessons from Prison: Servant Leadership and Community[1:15:41] The Journey to Freedom and Beyond[1:18:02] The Coffee Bean Message: From Prison to Global Impact[1:24:54] Final Thoughts and ReflectionsAdditional Resources:Six Dimes and a Nickel: Life Lessons to Empower Change by Damon WestThe Change Agent: How a Former College QB Sentenced to Life Transformed His World by Damon WestThe Coffee Bean: A Simple Lesson to Create Positive Change by Damon West and Jon GordonAlcoholics Anonymous: 12-Step Recovery ProgramSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

As of March 20, 2025, cocoa and coffee—two of the world's most beloved commodities—are facing an uncertain future. Rising global demand, volatile prices, and the intensifying impacts of climate change are reshaping the landscapes where these crops thrive. For consumers, this means higher costs and potential shortages of chocolate and coffee. For farmers, it's a battle against shifting environmental conditions and economic pressures. Here's a look at what lies ahead for these iconic beans. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Damon shares his gripping story, from his successful high school football career to his descent into drug addiction and criminal activities, culminating in his arrest and incarceration.Through his experiences in prison, Damon encountered a mentor named Muhammad, who taught him the powerful metaphor of the "coffee bean" - the idea that one can change the environment around them, rather than being changed by it. Damon embraced this philosophy and used it to not only survive, but thrive, in the harsh prison environment.Damon's story is a testament to the power of faith, service, and personal transformation. He discusses the importance of building a positive brand, controlling what you can, and leaving a legacy of servant leadership.Listeners will be inspired by Damon's resilience, his willingness to accept forgiveness, and his commitment to helping others, even those he once harmed. This episode is a must-listen for anyone seeking hope, redemption, and the courage to become a "coffee bean" in the face of adversity.Connect with us on social! @godbehindbars @jake_bodine

Found a great post and even better reminder to start my week off from Damon West (@damonwest7) where he reminds us of an important lesson that connects with is book, “The Coffee Bean”. In today's world we need this reminder for sure, or at least I do: “Be the coffee bean that makes a difference, not the one that gets changed by the world around you. #BeACoffeeBean. He goes on to share some powerful thoughts on resilience. This is good… “Resilience isn't just about surviving the storm; it's about thriving once the clouds clear. Be the coffee bean that changes the water, not the one that gets softened or hardened by the events going on around you.” There are a lot of “events” going on around all of us - take this thought to heart, and look to thrive through all of it. The world needs us to keep getting better in all things that we do & a big part of that is living our best life and being a difference maker for others. Don't let the world dictate if you are a carrot or an egg - be the coffee bean that helps change your world around you. Learn the lessons from the carrot and the egg and become better than those. It's been a little while since I was reminded about some important life lessons from Damon West (@damonwest7) and he reminds us that: “Here are some ways to be a coffee bean and keep your momentum up especially around this time of year! Remember, you are capable of much more than you think.” There are 4 areas he shares about how we can become a Coffee Bean: 1) Fuel your life with purpose, 2) Be humble and hungry, 3) Make life a mission trip and 4) Remember when you succeeded (click HERE for the video on Damon West's story). This is something each of us can connect with and take with us wherever we go. Go out and get his book “The Coffee Bean”... it's one worth keeping a copy all throughout life and giving them away to others too. Thanks for listening. There are a number of good points here for all of us to take in and keep with us for sure. It's all about the things we can control, letting go of the clutter around us and to keep striving to be our best! #BeACoffeeBean Thanks for listening. Which coffee region is best? I'm a pretty big fan of coffee, but normally I don't think too much about what I am buying. I have a list of brands I prefer, and digging deeper a few specific blends that I like. When I get to the store I hope one of them is on sale, and will just grab the cheapest. Although this process has worked for me, I figured we needed to take coffee from 3 different regions and find out more specifically what types of coffee I enjoy. This week we will try Coffee Beans from Colombia, Ethiopia, and Sumatra (they were all bought at the same local roaster). Please like and subscribe and if you have any suggestions, let us know by tweeting us @tastetestdummies or email us at nickandjohnpodcast@gmail.com. SPOILER! Below is a list of which coffee corresponds to which numbered cup it was in: 1. Colombia 2. Sumatra 3. Ethiopia

When you're aware, you're halfway there. - Wendy Basch Sentenced to sixty-five years in a Texas prison, Damon West once had it all. He came from a great family, in a home full of God, love, support, and opportunities to reach any goal. A natural born leader, an athlete with good looks and charm, he appeared to be the all-American kid pursuing his dreams. Underneath this facade, however, was an addict in the early stages of disease. After suffering childhood sexual abuse by a babysitter at the age of nine, Damon began putting chemicals into his body to alter the way he felt. Once he was introduced to methamphetamines, however, he became instantly hooked—and the lives of so many innocent people would forever be changed by the choices he made in order to feed his insatiable meth habit. After a fateful discussion during his incarceration with a seasoned convict, Damon had a spiritual awakening. He learned that, like a coffee bean changing with the application of heat and pressure, he was capable of changing the environment around him. Armed with a program of recovery, a renewed faith, and a miraculous second chance at life, Damon emerged from over seven years of prison a changed man. His story of redemption continues to inspire audiences today. In this episode, Damon joins us to talk about his two books, The Change Agent and The Coffee Bean which he wrote with Jon Gordon, as well as the life lessons he learned during prison, the three areas of wellness we should exercise every day, and what you can do now if you're recovering or feel lost in your wellness journey. Tune in with Dr. Michelle Robin and Damon West as they discuss: Both of their thoughts on spirituality and how they are able to let go of what they cannot control in order to surrender to a higher power. How fellow Small Changes Big Shifts guest, Jon Gordon, connected with him and persuaded him to write The Coffee Bean. An inside glimpse at the profound story of The Coffee Bean and what you will learn from the book. What healthy mindset strategy he learned to help him during his time in prison and how everyone can apply it to their own lives. The opportunity he took in prison to use that time to work on himself every single day. Why we should withhold from beginning new relationships until we take the time to truly know ourselves. What lessons and new insights he has gained about what it means to be in a committed relationship. Damon's suggestions for what you should today if you're in recovery or feeling lost: Get outside of yourself by thinking about other people before yourself. Adapt a humble mindset. Commit yourself to finding ways to help people every single day. Dive into the three areas of wellness that Damon advises we should work on growing every day that are in sync with our Four Quadrants of Wellbeing: Spiritual Wellness Mental Wellness Physical Wellness Learn and try out Damon's prayer that he starts his day with each morning: “God, put in front of me what you need me to do today for you and let me recognize it when I see it.” All the lessons of history in four sentences: Whom the gods would destroy, they first make mad with power. The mills of God grind slowly, but they grind exceedingly small. The bee fertilizes the flower it robs. When it is dark enough, you can see the stars. - Charles A. Beard
Damon West has an incredible journey of transformation and redemption that you won't want to miss. A promising college football quarterback, Damon seemingly had it all before a career-ending injury spiraled into drug addiction. By his early professional years, Damon was hooked on meth and running a burglary ring to fuel his habit. Sentenced to 65 years in a Texas maximum-security prison, Damon found sobriety and a new purpose in life. Since his parole more than seven years later, Damon has dedicated his life to inspiring others. Today he is a much sought-after speaker and best-selling coauthor of “The Coffee Bean” with Jon Gordon. On this episode, we talk about overcoming adversity, transforming your environment and the power of mindset.
Damon West "Be The Coffee Bean", a former starting college quarterback at the University of North Texas, shares his story of overcoming addiction and incarceration. USA Today says Damon West is the modern day Shawshank Redemption. He was sentenced to 65 years in prison for his involvement in organized criminal activity of breaking into homes to feed his meth addiction. However, he had an awakening during his incarceration that arose from his conversation with a lifer about the prison yard being a boiling pot of water. Damon emerged as a changed man. He is now a Criminal Justice college professor, internationally known keynote speaker, and international bestselling author of "The Coffee Bean: A Simple Lesson To Positive Change." He shares his story of redemption and inspires others to transform their lives. The Coffee Bean story has inspired thousands from Wal-Mart, State Farm, to sports teams such as the Dallas Cowboys, Clemson, Georgia, Alabama and others. The U.S. Army has even incorporated the #beacoffeebean mindset into their resilience training. Damon West discusses the flaws in the American criminal justice system, including the power of prosecutors and the lack of jury understanding. He shares his experience of being sentenced to 65 years in prison and the shock and realization that followed. Damon also talks about the importance of hope and the concept of the coffee bean as a symbol of transformation and resilience. He emphasizes the need to fight all your fights and the power of living in the moment. He emphasizes the power of positive energy and servant leadership. Damon believes that your past does not define you, your windshield is a lot bigger than your rearview mirror for a reason. He discusses the challenges of reentry and the ongoing punishment ex-felons face in society. Damon's biggest takeaway is the importance of putting back into the world and helping others. He is proof of perseverance and not giving up on your goals. One of my favorite quotes is, "you don't have to win every fight, but you have to fight every fight."
