Damon West had it all, he was a Division I starting quarterback at North Texas, Wall Street stockbroker at UBS, a Congressional staffer who once worked for a presidential campaign. Then one hit of crystal meth in a UBS parking garage destroyed everything. Eighteen months later he was homeless, leading a burglary crew, dubbed "The Uptown Burglar" by Dallas police. A jury deliberated for 10 minutes before sentencing him to 65 years in a Texas maximum-security prison. This is the story of how he got out and how a Muslim career criminal named Muhammad in a Dallas County jail cell handed him the message that became a Wall Street Journal bestseller: "Be a coffee bean."In this episode, Damon West sits down with Chad Robichaux to walk through the entire journey: the moment meth hooked him on the first hit, the SWAT raid that "rescued" him, the brutal first two months on Building 7 with 432 lifers, the parole interview that turned on a single word, and the email he received from a victim, the fiancée of a Marine killed in Iraq, whose forgiveness set him free.If you've ever wondered whether rock bottom can become a foundation, this one is for you.GET DAMON'S BOOKS: https://damonwest.org/shop/- The Coffee Bean (with John Gordon) - Wall Street Journal bestseller, translated into 30+ languages: - Six Times in a Nickel - Damon's full memoir + life principlesSigned copies available to Patreon members, join now to enter the giveaway: https://patreon.com/TheResilientShowCONNECT WITH DAMON WESTWebsite: https://damonwest.orgGET CHAD'S NEW BOOKRiptide (Silent Horizon Series, Book 2) - pre-order now, releasing May 12: https://www.tyndale.com/p/riptide/9781496488756——Stay up-to-date with all things Resilient by subscribing to our Resilient Times Newsletter: https://resilienttimes.substack.comRESILIENT:Follow Us On Patreon: https://patreon.com/theresilientshowFollow Us On Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/resilientshowFollow Us On Twitter: https://twitter.com/resilientshowFollow Us On TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@resilientshowLIVE RESILIENT STORE:https://shop.theresilientshow.comFollow Chad: https://www.instagram.com/chadrobo_officialhttps://x.com/ChadRoboSPONSORS:GoldCo: https://chadlikesgold.comSmith & Wesson: https://www.smith-wesson.comVortex Optics: https://vortexoptics.comGatorz Eyewear: https://www.gatorz.comAllied Wealth: https://alliedwealth.comBioPro+: https://www.bioproteintech.com/CHAD30BioXCellerator: https://www.bioxcellerator.comSLNT: https://slnt.com------The Resilient Show is a proud supporter of military and first responder communities in partnership with Mighty Oaks Foundation.

On this episode, Travis and his producer Eric dive into the Live Nation/Ticketmaster antitrust verdict and what it really means for fans, artists, and everyday consumers trying to enjoy live events without getting gouged. They also draw parallels to platforms like Yelp and the Better Business Bureau, unpacking how pay‑to‑play review systems quietly hurt small businesses and distort trust online. This conversation blends current events with real small‑business experience, from running an Ever Bowl location to watching reviews disappear unless you pay for ads, and contrasts it all with fan‑first models like the Savannah Bananas. On this episode we talk about: The federal jury verdict that found Live Nation/Ticketmaster operated as a monopoly under federal and state antitrust laws How Ticketmaster's control of venues, promotion, and ticketing lets them stack fees and suppress competition Why platforms like Yelp feel “mafia‑style” to small business owners and how their “not recommended” filters quietly bury real reviews The exploding cost of live events like Coachella and why attending a “simple” festival now runs into the thousands How fan‑first models like the Savannah Bananas show a different way to price tickets, remove junk fees, and build long‑term brand equity Top 3 Takeaways Monopolies don't just mean higher prices; they often mean worse experiences, fewer choices, and bullying tactics behind the scenes for venues, artists, and fans. If your business depends on platforms like Yelp, you're playing in someone else's sandbox, and their opaque algorithms and ad pressure can erase years of hard‑earned social proof overnight. There is real opportunity for creators and companies who are willing to take short‑term profit hits—like eliminating junk fees or doing their own ticketing—to build massive trust and loyalty by putting fans and customers first. Notable Quotes “The only thing on this planet I hate more than Coffee Bean is Ticketmaster.” “What's even crazier is the volume of people who can't afford to be doing that.” “Money only solves your money problems, but it's easier to solve the rest of your problems when you got some money in the bank.” Connect with Travis: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/travischappell Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/travischappell Other: https://travischappell.com Travis Makes Money is made possible by High Level – the All‑In‑One Sales & Marketing Platform built for agencies, by an agency. “Send Coach John a message”I started my day like I always do, looking for inspiration and lessons to learn from. I found this one from Damon West (@damonwest7), the co-author of the wonderful & powerful book, “The Coffee Bean.” (it's one you should make sure to check out).  Most people let the day decide how they show up. The difference is choosing it before anything else does. That's where consistency and real leadership start.”  This was a reminder for me to try and make the right choice, at the start of my day - each and every day! The post shared was this: “Start your day with one question:  how am I going to show up today?  For myself and for others. Because your attitude, your effort, and your presence will shape every room you walk into.”  A question I need to ask myself, and looking back is a bit easier since things have already happened - Is on my “good” days, why were they good?  Also on my “bad” days, why were they bad?  I am betting that the start to each of those days had something to do with it. I am thinking that if each of us made a bit more of a conscious effort to start our days out thinking about how do we want to show up today?  This goes for the person looking back at ourselves in the mirror, to all the different people that we come into contact with every day - especially our loved ones.  Awesome reminder by an awesome difference maker. Get all the Shownotes and links at:  https://www.jasonvbarger.com/podcast/be-a-coffee-bean-damon-west/ Summary Jason is joined by his friend, three-time best-selling author and keynote speaker Damon West, for a soul-stirring conversation about the power of being a "change agent" in any environment. Please rate and review the podcast to help amplify these messages to others! Summary: In the "boiling water" of high-stakes business and life, does your team soften like a carrot, harden like an egg, or transform the environment like a coffee bean? In this special live episode recorded at Thermostat Cultures Live, Jason V Barger sits down with Damon West. Damon's story is one of the most remarkable redemption arcs in modern leadership—from a Division I starting quarterback to a 65-year prison sentence, to becoming one of the most in-demand speakers for Fortune 500 companies and elite athletic programs. This conversation moves beyond standard motivational tactics to address the deep-seated mechanics of corporate culture and leadership in teams. Jason and Damon explore the "Coffee Bean" metaphor—a lesson learned in a maximum-security prison that provides a blueprint for how individuals can set the temperature of an organization rather than being a victim of the heat. They discuss the necessity of servant leadership, the strategic value of "controlling the controllables," and why the most resilient cultures are built from the bottom up. Essential listening for executives, managers, and anyone navigating significant transition, this episode offers profound insights on the power of hope, the weight of grace, and the responsibility we all have to be "useful" to those around us. Episode Notes & Timestamps: [00:00] Intro: Jason welcomes the live audience at Thermostat Cultures Live and introduces the theme of mindset and interaction. [00:04] The Teaser: Damon shares why the "Coffee Bean" message wasn't actually about him, but about a mission for someone else. [00:06] The Fork in the Rd: Damon reflects on the 1996 injury that ended his football career and his subsequent spiral into addiction and organized crime. [00:10] The Debt: A look at the "RICO" trial and the 65-year life sentence that forced a total recalibration of identity. [00:14] The Pot of Boiling Water: Damon recounts his meeting with Muhammad in the Dallas County Jail and the origin of the carrot, egg, and coffee bean metaphor. [00:19] Outside the Comfort Zone: Why growth requires navigating toward the scary places and how Damon established a "fluent" understanding of his environment. [00:20] Servant Leadership in Prison: How a free tutoring service inside a level 5 facility transformed a culture of hopelessness. [00:22] Body Language as a Tool: Why your non-verbal cues either "infect" or "affect" the room's thermostat. [00:29] The Jason's Deli Story: A masterclass in servant leadership—how Joe Tortorice Jr. flipped the pyramid to create one of the most loyal workforces in America. [00:32] Hope vs. Strategy: Lessons from Shawshank Redemption—why hope is essential but must be paired with the grit to "go through" the obstacle. [00:39] The Parole Test: The one question that determined Damon's freedom: "If you could be remembered for anything, what would it be?" [00:45] The Kansas City Chiefs Example: Why Andy Reid's culture is anchored by the players carrying the torch when the coach is not in the room. [00:51] Finding Muhammad: The emotional conclusion to the story of James Lynn Baker II and the power of redeeming someone else's legacy. Key Takeaways for Leaders: Be the Change Agent: Like the coffee bean, your job is to change the "water" (environment) around you rather than letting the pressure change who you are. Controlling the Controllables: Focus your team's energy only on what they can impact: what they think, say, feel, and do. Bottom-Up Buy-In: High-performing cultures aren't just top-down mandates; they are anchored when every member of the team owns the vision. The Power of Grace: Understand that grace often costs the giver more than the receiver, but it is the essential ingredient for true organizational redemption. Using a simple but powerful illustration, they challenge believers not to be shaped by their circumstances, but to transform them through the life of Christ within. Through biblical examples like Joseph and Joshua, this episode shows that the very pressures you face are the opportunities God uses to make you a difference-maker. Topics Discussed The coffee bean illustration and what it represents How pressure reveals your true spiritual condition Three responses to trials: weakening, hardening, or transforming Joseph's example of thriving in unjust circumstances Joshua and Caleb standing firm when others gave in Trusting God's placement in difficult environments Depending on Christ to influence others Key Takeaways You are either shaped by your environment or used by God to shape it Pressure is God's tool to reveal and refine your faith Your current situation is not a setback but a divine assignment True influence comes from Christ working through you Faith chooses to trust and act, even when it's uncomfortable You don't need a different situation to make a difference—you need dependence on God Faith Talks is a monthly program on the Thee Generation Podcast designed to help young ladies grow in faith and live it out daily. The world can feel like it's boiling, and it's easy to wake up already bracing for the next problem. I start the day with a short story that puts a surprising mirror in front of us: a father boils three pots of water and drops in a potato, an egg, and coffee. They all face the same heat, but they don't all come out the same, and the difference says a lot about stress, resilience, and what we're letting shape us. We talk about how adversity can soften you until you feel worn down, or harden you until you feel shut off. Then we lean into the better option: becoming like the coffee bean that changes the water around it. That's the turning point of this five-minute morning devotional, because it moves from “what's happening to me” to “what's happening in me.” If you've felt confused, angry, or overwhelmed lately, you'll hear a simple way to reset your mindset and your faith before the day gets away from you. We would love to hear your comments. Being a Coffee Bean means you do it when no one's watching.  That's integrity and that's what transforms the water.”  Remember the story about the coffee bean transforming the pot of boiling water. "The Colors Everyone Will Be Wearing in Spring 2026 (According to Pantone)" Fashion exhibitions, fearless color, and a little bit of "menopause mayhem." Just another stylish week on Wisdom From the Wardrobe. We kick things off, as always, with In the News, where Bec brings us word that the iconic Met Gala has announced its upcoming theme, "Costume Art." The exhibition explores the idea that the dressed body is a common thread across the entire museum collection, a reminder that clothing isn't just fashion, it's storytelling. From museum halls to the runways of New York Fashion Week, we then turn our attention to the Spring/Summer 2026 Pantone color trends, and this season's palette is anything but shy. According to the Pantone Color Institute, designers are pushing back against AI-driven sameness and leaning into bold personal expression. The result? A mix of comforting neutrals and vibrant statement shades that feel optimistic, expressive, and occasionally… a little chaotic. Think tones like Burnt Sienna and Coffee Bean, interesting shades like Muskmelon, soft romantic shades like Dusty Rose, and grounding hues like Marina and Sage Green. In other words, there's a color for every mood, including the occasional moment of what Stacy lovingly referred to as "menopause mayhem." In this episode, we break down the Spring Summer 2026 color trends, talk about which shades actually work in real life wardrobes, and share practical ways to incorporate trending colors without feeling like you're dressed as a Pantone swatch. Because great style isn't about wearing every trend. It's about knowing which ones deserve a spot in your closet. Expect plenty of laughs, a few honest opinions, and the usual reminder that personal style should be fun and not a paint-by-numbers exercise. If you've wondering which fashion color trends are worth trying (and which might be better left on the runway), this episode is your stylish cheat sheet.

A Note from James:Oh my gosh. This guy was thrown in jail for 65 years—and he deserved it. You'll hear about his crimes and misdemeanors. He started as a superstar quarterback, high school and college hero turned meth addict, and eventually became a hardcore RICO gang criminal. Sentenced to essentially life in prison, Damon's story is genuinely one of the most inspirational I've heard. He's got a bunch of books out—his latest, Six Dimes and a Nickel: Life Lessons to Empower Change, just came out and refers to the 65-year sentence he received. You need to read this book, which follows his memoir The Change Agent and The Coffee Bean, teaching a simple yet profound lesson about creating positive change. I could have talked to Damon forever about jail, prison fights, criminal life, meth addiction, and most importantly, the transformation that changed everything. By the way, this conversation will change your life, too—I really took a lot from his insights.Episode Description:Damon West was handed a 65-year prison sentence, effectively life behind bars, after spiraling from a promising college quarterback into meth addiction and becoming the leader of a burglary ring. This episode covers the dramatic highs and devastating lows of his journey, from his arrest and brutal introduction to prison violence to his profound transformation inspired by the "coffee bean" metaphor. James and Damon discuss deeply personal stories about addiction, identity, and redemption, offering listeners unique perspectives on overcoming profound adversity and using pain as a catalyst for extraordinary personal growth. What You'll Learn:How identity can become an addiction, and strategies to rebuild after losing itThe "coffee bean" metaphor and how it can help you transform difficult situations into opportunitiesSpecific ways Damon earned respect and survived brutal prison conditions without joining a gangPractical insights from the 12-step recovery program applicable to anyone facing challenging circumstancesHow forgiveness and accountability can become powerful tools for personal changeTimestamped Chapters:[00:00] Introduction to Damon's Story[01:27] Damon's Early Life and Downfall[02:40] Life of Crime and Addiction[17:02] The Arrest and Trial[29:06] The Verdict: 65 Years in Prison[30:25] A Mother's Ultimatum[31:06] Advice from Muhammad[32:19] Surviving Prison Fights[39:33] The Coffee Bean Story[41:38] First Day in Maximum Security[49:00] Earning Respect on the Rec Yard[51:08] Spiritual Awakening and Self-Improvement[55:38] Understanding the Eighth and Ninth Steps[56:31] Living Amends: A Path to Redemption[58:49] The Impact of Crime and Seeking Forgiveness[1:03:56] The Power of Forgiveness[1:10:29] Lessons from Prison: Servant Leadership and Community[1:15:41] The Journey to Freedom and Beyond[1:18:02] The Coffee Bean Message: From Prison to Global Impact[1:24:54] Final Thoughts and ReflectionsAdditional Resources:Six Dimes and a Nickel: Life Lessons to Empower Change by Damon WestThe Change Agent: How a Former College QB Sentenced to Life Transformed His World by Damon WestThe Coffee Bean: A Simple Lesson to Create Positive Change by Damon West and Jon GordonAlcoholics Anonymous: 12-Step Recovery ProgramSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Found a great post and even better reminder to start my week off from Damon West (@damonwest7) where he reminds us of an important lesson that connects with is book, “The Coffee Bean”. In today's world we need this reminder for sure, or at least I do: “Be the coffee bean that makes a difference, not the one that gets changed by the world around you. #BeACoffeeBean.  He goes on to share some powerful thoughts on resilience. This is good… “Resilience isn't just about surviving the storm; it's about thriving once the clouds clear. Be the coffee bean that changes the water, not the one that gets softened or hardened by the events going on around you.”  There are a lot of “events” going on around all of us - take this thought to heart, and look to thrive through all of it. The world needs us to keep getting better in all things that we do & a big part of that is living our best life and being a difference maker for others. Don't let the world dictate if you are a carrot or an egg - be the coffee bean that helps change your world around you. Learn the lessons from the carrot and the egg and become better than those.  Thanks for listening.  Please take a few moments to subscribe & share this with someone, also leave a 5 Star rating on Apple Podcasts and ITunes or other services where you find this show.  Find me on Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/coachtoexpectsuccess/   on Twitter / “X”:  @coachtosuccess   and on Instagram at:  @coachjohndaly  - My YouTube Channel is at: Coach John Daly.   Email me at: CoachJohnDalyPodcast@gmail.com     You can also head on over to https://www.coachtoexpectsuccess.com/ and get in touch with me there on my homepage along with checking out my Top Book list too.  Other things there on my site are being worked on too.  Please let me know that you are reaching out to me from my podcast.
