If you’re concerned about AI and how it could affect your future, then don’t miss Tabitha Goldstaub on this week’s episode of Secret Leaders. Tabitha is a serial tech entrepreneur, an artificial intelligence industry expert who is chair of the UK government's AI Council, and co founder of CognitionX, which was before COVID, the biggest AI conference in the world, but has understandably had to pivot to an expert advice platform.“It was really clear that there were so many better experts to advise the government, but there wasn't anybody who could be the glue to hold them together. And they needed somebody to do a lot of the legwork. And also, I think they were looking for someone as optimistic as me.”Before that, she co-founded Rightster (now Brave Bison) a global b2b video network for distribution, content-sourcing, audience engagement and monetisation, and now she’s just written a book - How To Talk To Robots, something we could all do with learning. “I felt like I was at this sort of epicentre where I got to witness the future unfolding in front of my eyes. And I was selfish if I didn't explain it to my mates.”From explaining why she’s written a book about AI for women, to worrying that we won’t use AI to fight climate change, Tabitha is frank, open and incredibly honest about the future of AI. So, if you’re interested in the future of the world and the way that artificial intelligence will impact it, don’t miss this incredibly insightful episode. Impact Leaders - Impact Investment and Performance with Purpose
On today’s episode we are doing something different: we are sharing with you a session that I called “The Sustainable Investment Dilemma”, a conversation I hosted as part of The CogXtra weekly event series, covering in this opportunity the subject of “Sustainable Business – How Industry is addressing the Climate Crisis”. In our case, the financial industry. As my co-panellist I brought together two guests: Amy Clarke, who is Co-Founder & Chief Impact Officer of Tribe Impact Capital, and Troy Mortimer, who is Responsible Investment and ESG Advisor at ILA & Partners. If you did not know them already, I highly recommend that you also listen to the individuals episodes we recorded previously. You can also read her Bios at the end of these notes. As part of the event I also shared a short Video introduction to the recently launched film “Our Planet: Too Big To Fail”, which is a 42-minute film that explores the risks of inaction, the impact of investing-as-usual, and the role the finance sector can play powering a sustainable future. I wanted to bring this to your attention to ask you to watch it and share it, so we can all take proactive actions! You can watch the video on ILA & Partners’ website - Media section: http://bit.ly/ILAmediaV I also thought this is relevant to set the tone ahead of our conversation, but most importantly, I wanted to shine the light on one of the best tools we have to create awareness and understand how interconnected the industry is to every part of society and the world at large. Please note that we had a couple of technical challenges that were all resolved during the first few minutes, but I wanted to make sure you had access to this valuable content. Enjoy ! Highlights: “If we can create a much healthier relationship with our wealth, and the purpose of our wealth, then actually we should be able to fix, repair, increase resilience, and ultimately regenerate the relationships with each other and with nature.” Amy Clarke 50th anniversary of Milton Friedman's seminal essay that was penned and then printed in the New York Times Magazine “there is a real sense that the values and belief systems upon which we have built this global finance system aren't right, they're not fit, they're not robust.” There is the rise of the BCorp movement and the use of BLab tools during the lockdown has risen exponentially. “Impact investing is about helping wealth holders reconnect with the purpose of their wealth. The word wealth comes from two old English 13th century old English words, meaning well being, we've lost the well being and wealth along the way. And it's become singularly focused on financial performance.” Amy Clarke “I see this as a behavioral inertia challenge. Financial institutions are comprised of individuals, we need to look at how we incentivise these individuals, how we are rewarding them and how we associate value with their actions.” Troy Mortimer We can transition not all but a lot of companies through to becoming a force for good. “We need a just transition, quickly and effectively where finance, regulation and policy play a role. We need a carrot and a stick.” Troy Mortimer How do we move beyond (Only) preaching to the converted? The later we leave it, the steeper the transition is going to be - Mark Carney The more we pushback regulation deadlines, the more uncertainty it creates. Ultimately, its better to takes the operational learnings in Covid and behaviour change and apply it to compliance and regulation. Bernard Looney, CEO of BP, a different style of leadership. Moving away into a more human style of leadership. We need to use AI to help change behaviours in the right direction. Passive ESG funds should be able to demonstrate intent. Its important to populate the empirical evidence and convince the skeptics of the economic data with the language that they know. “We have outperformed the benchmarks. There is more than enough data to show that these type of investments are resilient on up and down cycles, which is why we are seeing huge flows into ESG.” Amy Clarke “As a bellwether for market sentiment, its phenomenal, because we can now see everybody is looking for safe harbours and safe harbours of businesses with these kind of resilience built in.” “Investors should be thinking - Well, I understand that there is some volatility right now, but in the mean time, I’m investing for something larger. What you wil see is that over the long-term, it starts to come back in financial returns.” Troy Mortimer As Tim Geithner said, at least in relation to the US financial crisis and how they had resources large enough to do anything about that crisis , but I think financial resources will not be enough in relation to the Sustainability challenge we face. And we will not have time to react and fix things. But we must be proactive. This year, I sat down with Roy Bahat at CogX, a large global technology conference, that this year was completely virtual. Roy and I used this time to reflect on everything that has happened since the start of the pandemic. What many don't know is that a catalyst for the technology industry's response to the crisis in the early days was a WhatsApp group that Roy and I were a part of. We shared what it was like in those early days, how we got involved and what we need to do now to make sure we build a better world on the other side. This is the first ever live tapping of Out of the Crisis. It was recorded on June 9th, 2020.

In this episode, we're joined by speech and communication expert James Bryce who shares his knowledge on speech intelligence and how he believes it's the next big thing in human productivity. James, a former Royal Marines Commando, speaks several languages and has been in the speech and communication field for over 20 years now. It was James’ fascination with this aspect of human behaviour that inspired him to develop AI tool, Gweek; winner of the Innovation in AI Award at CogX, London for 2 years running. Gweek’s unique technology and application advises speakers in real-time through the privacy and convenience of their own phone. Assisting its user's to master speech patterns and thoughts through bite-sized personalised learning. Gweek is agile and adaptive across all-matter of subject, allowing the user to engage authentically and articulately in situations and conversations where they might have otherwise struggled to find the appropriate words. Articulating professionally and communicating effectively are common problems for young people in the workforce. James believes these vital and often lacking skills can be taught and developed. His functional technology is giving user's the opportunity to take the development of their language and vocablary into their own hands, resulting in confident communicators ready to eloquently engage in interviews, persuasively handle sales pitches and effectively give presentations.
Amanda and Vickie are excited to bring you the panel discussion, “Building the Bridge Between Reading Literacy and the Consequences of Falling Behind” from October 24th, and which raised nearly $13,000. This money will be used towards providing free legal services to 24 families. Panelists discuss what happens when literacy education fails, what happens when kids fall through the cracks and the mental health impact of this. Special shoutout to Sandra and Roger, whose family wasn’t able to make the event but were major donors to the event, Fusion Academy, a title sponsor and co-hosts, the panelists, sponsors, and the nearly 100 attendees. Thank you all for helping to make this the success that it was! Be sure to listen for a special announcement about the Inclusive Education Project! Show Highlights: Vanessa Kayrell, Head of School at Fusion Academy in Mission Viejo, introduces the panelists: Robin Podway, Head of School at Fusion Academy in Huntington Beach; Dr. George Tucker, a clinical psychologist and author of Problem Children: It’s Not Always the Parents’ Fault; Cathy Johnson, Founder of the Johnson Academy; Dr. Ellis Crasnow, Director of STEM³ Academy and STEM Education for The Help Group; and Javier Arguello, Founder and Executive Director of COGx. Statistics from the National Assessment of Educational Progress are presented: 1/3 of 4th graders are proficient in reading. 2/3 of students who cannot read proficiently by the end of 4th grade will end up in jail or on welfare. 1 in 4 children in America grow up without learning how to read. Students who don’t read proficiently by the 3rd grade are four times more likely to drop out of school. As of 2011, America was the only free-market country where the current generation was less educated than the previous one. Nearly 85% of the juveniles who faced court in the juvenile system are functionally illiterate, proving that there’s a close relationship between illiteracy and crime. 53% of 4th graders admitted to reading recreationally almost every day, while only 20% of 8th graders could say the same. 75% of Americans who receive food stamps perform at the lowest two levels of literacy. 90% of high school dropouts are on welfare. Panelists discuss the inspiration for their work and what drives them: How top universities have known so much about cognitive neuroscience for many years, but school systems are not using the science. The rolling out of a platform for global, professional development for educators in partnership with the University of Pennsylvania. Working in the prison systems and seeing the illiteracy there. Also, what can we do with the idea that our brains continue to develop up until about age 26? Building on strengths and helping them before they fall through the cracks. Panelists cover: approaches that bring success: what we can do differently technology as a learning tool strength-based learning intervention through social policy remediation strategies Panelists explore: when kids learn ok, but their social learning and body awareness is not ok: what we can do to help them addressing anxiety and depression issues the impact of “learned helplessness” Ways that we can advocate for our own kids and make a difference in the lives of those we impact on a daily basis. BIG ANNOUNCEMENT: Victoria Lucero, a former law clerk with the Inclusive Education Project, is now an Associate Attorney (she passed the BAR!). The Inclusive Education Project is expanding into New Mexico, where Victoria will be taking it, and will be offering affirmative immigration services. Links/Resources: Thank you for listening! In this episode, James speaks to Martin Adams, CEO of Codec, an award winning company which uses artificial intelligence to perfect marketing. Martin set up the company because of a desire to bring back great storytelling in advertising. The internet is full of tribe-like communities known as digital villages, and Codec uses data analysis to target them. Rather than replacing human creativity with AI, the company wants to bolster the creative process, offering insights that help brands develop better relationships with their audiences. Having won the ‘Best AI Product in Marketing’ award at the 2019 CogX tech festival, Martin says he feels “blessed” to be working in this field, finding a solution to a lack of empathy and emotional connection created by digital advertising.

On today’s episode we welcome back our very own James Wang to talk about the future of AI hardware and his recent talk at the CogX event. With a definite move back towards fabrication and production of chips in Silicon Valley, the future of technology in both America and abroad is in just as much transition as ever. James informs us on what the industry and related fields look like right now, how this will all translate into the marketplace and the effect that it will have on companies and customers. We discuss the last year in chip fabrication and think about the years ahead; what vertical and horizontal integration can we expect? We talk about how the field is placed geographically and China’s commitment to industry and market leadership by 2025. We also get into the implications for the autonomous driving market as takes shape.
Researchers at the University of Tubingen demonstrate that virtual neurons spontaneously develop a “number sense” when assessing the number of visual items (such as dots) in a set. The Allen Institute for AI create Grover, a neural network that can generate fake news, but that can also detect NN-generated fake news; Grover uses the same architecture as GPT-2 (the previous “unreleasable for the safety of humanity” algorithm), but these researchers highlight the importance of making available such generators. In related news, Witness Media Lab releases a report on the current state of deepfake tech; a CNN report looks at how Finland is fighting fake news; and a NY Times article examines the “weaponization” of AI-generated disinformation. A Mashable article from Marcus Gilmer looks at the state of software that attempts to identify deepfakes. The International Committee of the Red Cross releases a report a “human-centered approach” to AI and machine learning in armed conflict. A paper from Springer-Verlag provides a history and references for the “neural-symbolic debate.” Hiroki Sayama at SUNY Binghamton makes available “Introduction to the Modeling and Analysis of Complex Systems.” The US-China Commission releases testimony on a day-long session, with testimony from experts on three topics, including the US-China Competition in AI. The Allen Institute brain atlases available for exploring online. The 36th International Conference on Machine Learning meets in Long Beach, CA, with over 6,000 participants. Meanwhile, CogX meets in King’s Cross, London. And former Secretary of Defense Ash Carter pens a “letter to a young Googler” on the morality of defending America. In recent news, Andy and Dave discuss a recent Brookings report on the view of AI and robots based on internet search data; a Chatham House report on AI anticipates disruption; Microsoft computes the future with its vision and principles on AI; the first major AI patent filings from DeepMind are revealed; biomimicry returns, with IBM using “analog” synapses to improve neural net implementation, and Stanford U researchers develop an artificial sensory nervous system; and Berkley Deep Drive provides the largest self-driving car dataset for free public download. Next, the topic of “hard exploration games with sparse rewards” returns, with a Deep Curiosity Search approach from the University of Wyoming, where the AI gets more freedom and reward from exploring (“curiosity”) than from performing tasks as dictated by the researchers. From Cognition Expo 18, work from Martinez-Plumed attempts to “Forecast AI,” but largely highlights the challenges in making comparisons due to the neglected, or un-reported, aspects of developments, such as the data, human oversight, computing cycles, and much more. From the Google AI Blog, researchers improve deep learning performance by finding and describing the transformation policies of the data, and using that information to increase the amount and diversity of the training dataset. Then, Andy and Dave discuss attempts to using drone surveillance to identify violent individuals (for good reasons only, not for bad ones). And in a more sporty application, “AI enthusiast” Chintan Trivedi describes his efforts to train a bot to play a soccer video game, by observing his playing. Finally, Andy recommends an NSF workshop report, a book on AI: Foundations of Computational Agents, Permutation City, and over 100 video hours of the CogX 2018 conference.
This month I travel to CogX 2017 in London to do a special report from the conference floor. This episode is a collection of bits of talks and sessions, vox-pops from the CogX attendees and our thoughts on the show.
