Martin Adams, former general manager of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, blows up some right-wing myths about the water supply in Pacific Palisades, and talks with Alex Wagner about the realities of municipal water systems and ideas for adapting a system built for occasional residential fires to deal with a large scale, community-wide fire.
It's an adventure in time and space as The Hill Is Always Greener finally gets a chance to read the seminal classic novel, Sonic the Hedgehog in the Fourth Dimension. The second of the Martin Adams books, it sees Sonic and Tails sent back and forth through time on a quest to save planet Mobius, and perhaps the universe itself, from not only the machinations of Dr. Robotnik, but from forces outside of time and space as we know them. Does this chronicle of corrupted chronology stand up to the test of time, or is it best left in the past? It's time to activate our Mark-0 Gauss-Coyne prototypes and find out! The disconnect between a roaring stock market and stubborn recession predictions has left many investors scratching their heads. The equity strategists at Bloomberg Intelligence however have an intriguing explanation: Maybe the part of the economic downdraft most likely to impact stocks started last year, and the worst could already be over. That's what an economic-regime model suggests, according to BI Chief Equity Strategist Gina Martin Adams and her team. She joined the What Goes Up podcast to explain how the model works, and offer her mid-year update on the market. The model uses month-over-month changes in capacity utilization, continuing jobless claims, ISM Manufacturing data and the University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment level to define the economy's health. “This indicator started suggesting there were economic risks emerging for the equity market as early as June of last year,” Martin Adams says. “And then it hit just an outright low level, like a low that you never see outside of recession. We effectively had this big loss of momentum in the economy that impacted the equity market—extremely negatively—between June and December.” She says that, by the model's measure, the economy still isn't out of the woods. “It's still terrible. The reading is awful. It suggests we may actually still be in some form of an economic correction or recession, but it's off of the low,” Martin Adams says. “So this is what's really meaningful for price direction: As we know, equity prices are driven by shifts in momentum.”See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We cover techniques that enhance learning transfer – in other words, getting learners to actually do what you taught them to do – and how you can incorporate them into your learning design. And finally, we talk about everyone’s favorite topic: Assessments! Specifically, how to go beyond “smile sheets” and how assessments can inform the way you iterate on content and drive your KPIs.

Martin Adams, Founder of Codec joins Andy and Dominic this week on Business Without Bullsh-t to talk about how Codec's cutting-edge AI and Deep Learning technology is enabling them to help companies gain a better understanding of their audience's cultural behaviour through the content they interact with. Fascinating and smart to say the least. But the focus wasn't just on plugging Codec. The three went deeper and spoke about the nefarious side of Ad Tech fraud (those cheeky Russian gangsters!), the ever-evolving alliance between government and Big Tech; will we even need governments as public service providers in the future when the tech industry is doing a much better job? and the truth behind the Games Stop fiasco, an indecent which clearly exemplified the power of harnessing online communities to create seismic change in the “real” world. In fact, so much valuable ground was covered in this conversation that we thought why not deliver the goodness indigestible portions? so expect to hear more from Martin about his top 3 business trends, plus some sage advice for future entrepreneurs, later this month. In the meantime, pull up a chair, press play, and get stuck into this week's serving.Business Without Bullsh-t is powered by Oury Clark

Pernah nggak kamu merasa gagal? What is life for, existentially? We are born and then we die and our life task is to make something of the time in between with no way of knowing how long we have got. In living towards an unknown future we are challenged daily with the paradox that while life will always be a mystery, it is this that makes life worth living. So, what do we mean when we say that human beings develop, and what are the limits to human potential? In the first part of this talk, Martin will look at what six existential philosophers, Søren Kierkegaard, Friedrich Nietzsche, Martin Heidegger, Jean-Paul Sartre, Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Simone de Beauvoir have said about how we become who we are. In the second part, he will draw out some common themes and relate these to everyday life and by implication, to therapeutic practice. Martin Adams is an existential psychotherapist, lecturer, supervisor and writer. He is a visiting lecturer at Regents University and the New School of Psychotherapy and Counselling in London. Martin is the author of several books, including: ‘A Concise Introduction to Existential Counselling', ‘Skills in Existential Counselling and Psychotherapy' which he co-authored with Emmy van Deurzen, and most recently: An Existential Approach to Human Development', which was published by Palgrave in 2018. He has contributed to Case Studies in Existential Therapy and to the Wiley World Handbook for Existential Therapy. In his spare time, he is also a sculptor. In this episode, James speaks to Martin Adams, CEO of Codec, an award winning company which uses artificial intelligence to perfect marketing. Martin set up the company because of a desire to bring back great storytelling in advertising. The internet is full of tribe-like communities known as digital villages, and Codec uses data analysis to target them. Rather than replacing human creativity with AI, the company wants to bolster the creative process, offering insights that help brands develop better relationships with their audiences. Having won the ‘Best AI Product in Marketing’ award at the 2019 CogX tech festival, Martin says he feels “blessed” to be working in this field, finding a solution to a lack of empathy and emotional connection created by digital advertising.

This week our ‘Three Lessons Learnt’ podcast featured Martin Adams. Martin currently works for a mattress company, consulting as their technical CTO as a contractor. Originally part-time, he has been full time since 2003. He is also building his own start-up called Zaro which began out of the frustration of working with remote, in-house and agency teams, where there is a lack of communication of the work that is done. He has been into technology and the web space since studying Internet Technology at University in 2000 and has been programming since he was 13. If you haven’t yet listened to the podcast, here’s a summary of Martin’s three lessons that he learnt when starting up his own business: Don’t get distracted. Martin admitted then when he spots a problem, he often tries to figure out a solution by looking at the different things that are going on and can become easily diverted off of the path that he is working on. His main advice is to enjoy doing one thing really well rather than ten things to a subpar standard and suggests training yourself to be focussed and to tune out any possible distractions. Just launch. Martin knows from his own experiences that you can get into a cycle of trying to make everything perfect or going above what is required for a launch. He uses various methods to control deadlines to ensure no tasks are put off. Constant reminders proved beneficial. He suggests to just get something launched, take the win and move on to the next challenge. Enjoy the dip. Martin believes ‘the dip’ is the part of a project or phase of a business where most entrepreneurs quit as things begin to get difficult. He advises not to “compare your documentary to other people’s highlight reel”. People can look at other startups and see success but they don’t necessarily see the behind-the-scenes years spent stuck in the dip pushing and believing in their startup. Martin does his job for the love of the craft as he naturally finds it enjoyable. He suggests that appreciating the small things can get you through the dip. It was great to have Martin with us on our podcast. Why not follow along on Twitter @martin_adams and find out more about what Martin is working on. We’ll see you again soon for our next podcast. www.steadfastcollective.com
