Kai and Warren Kushner: Balancing Academics and Athletics through a Personalized Education. This is episode 714 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast. Kai Kushner is a competitive surfer who lives in Manhattan Beach, California and travels the world to compete and train. He is 17 years old and has been doing this since he was 10. Kai has been surfing in Southern California since he was six. A competitive surfer like his father Warren Kushner, Kai has become one of the top junior male surfers in the nation with the hopes of participating in the Olympics in the future. While Kai spends more time in the ocean than on dry land, his education remains a high priority for both him and his parents. Mother Dana Kushner credits Kai's success academically and in athletics to a personalized approach to his education. Having been with Fusion Academy since middle school, Kai has been able to succeed in his grades while also finding time to train. Often traveling, Kai's attendance doesn't falter with both virtual and in-person options available to him. Kai has many sponsors Rivvia projects, electric sunglasses, Chanell Islands surfboards, and future fins. In addition, Kai speaks Japanese and plays guitar which is a good compliment on his journey. Our focus will be Balancing Academics and Athletics through a Personalized Education. So much to learn about creating school environments that make it possible for students to be able to complete their academic coursework successfully while pursuing their athletic dreams. Fusion Academy's Tainah Georges explains how they use a one-student-to-one-teacher model that allows students to achieve academically. Fusion describes itself as: “the world's most personalized middle and high school, with 1-to-1 classes that match your student's pace and preferences, so they can learn better, dive deeper, and never get left behind.” Their Mission statement: “Guided by a fundamental belief in the immense potential within every person, our mission is to help each student flourish – emotionally, socially, and academically – through positive, mentoring relationships and a personalized education experience.” Michelle Rose Gilman founded Fusion Academy out of frustration with the status quo, and a need for personalized education in her community. What began with one campus in Solana Beach, California in 1989 expanded to add a Los Angeles campus in 2010 through the help of what is now Fusion Education Group. Since then, Fusion has expanded to over 80 campuses across the country and changes the lives of thousands of families each year. Beating Addiction & Chasing Your Dreams Wesley Geer is a professional guitar player, songwriter, recording artist, and producer, who signed his first record deal to Jive Records with the band he founded, (Hed) P.E. Wes toured the world for nearly a decade, and the band sold over 1 million records worldwide. What many didn't know at the time was while he was masterminding, and leading his band to the member's first-ever record deal, Wes was a full-blown drug addict, using alcohol, methamphetamines and other drugs, daily, for years. Subscribe for more recovery livestreams and information!     / @pejtheaddictioninterventionist   As a progressive disease, no matter the efforts to quell his addiction and control it, things continually got worse. After nearly a decade of touring the world, with the biggest names in rock, Wes' life was imploding, and he finally left in 2003, for a ‘lifestyle change' that ultimately ended him up in rehab in 2004. In rehab, he learned tools for recovery and latched onto the stories of others that had overcome their addictions, stories of people being so far down in a deadly hole, but somehow not only got sober but achieved great things. The following years found Wes as an instructor at Fusion Academy & Learning Center, an alternative school where he taught music to 6th through 12th graders who had struggled in more traditional academic settings. These same troubled students often succeeded in Fusion's adaptive one-on-one learning environment. Geer's love of teaching blossomed during his time. His classes served as the earliest prototype for R2R; he and one student at a time would write and play songs together. Geer said he quickly noticed “the engagement and the buy-in” the students had in these sessions was much greater than a typical ‘lesson' as the student's energy was transformed with hope and self-esteem while songwriting and playing music together. In 2010, Wes decided he wanted to get back into music and started praying and meditating on what that would look like. Not long after, and only because he was sober, Geer was offered the gig as a guitarist with the legendary rock band Korn. He traveled the world, performing in more than 40 countries with the multi-platinum stars, as well as appeared numerous live televised and studio recording sessions. Geer was then moved to give back, wanting to create something that could help people who struggled the same way he had. He then founded Rock to Recovery (R2R), a non-profit organization created on 12/12/12 with the purpose of providing those in various types of treatment and recovery programs the cathartic, uplifting, healing experience of connectivity through playing music. It's a therapy Geer himself turned to after years of abusing drugs and alcohol. During his stay in rehab, he admits that music was his “most intimate friend” during his darkest days, allowing him to cope with the rollercoaster of emotions that consumed his early days in treatment. The concept of what is the “best” school has shifted a lot in recent years, we certainly feel it should be! The conversation is not about who has the highest test scores, the most homework, or the rate of matriculation to the most well known universities. In our experience in education and with mental health, parents, caregivers and professionals need to look inward to their own child and find the environment that is the best fit for their individual needs, learning style and goals. Furthermore, the choice you make for your child in elementary school may not be the best place for them to thrive in middle or high school. We will explore family options based on each individual child and offer tips on how to advocate for their needs.

Deeply Rooted. A Web-Series on Mindset.

Mimi Loftus started her professional career in New York City teaching Literature, Writing, and Psychology at Monroe College in the Bronx, and then English and History at the Beacon School in Manhattan. After taking a complement of students to Cuba in 2000, Mimi moved to New Orleans (the northernmost Caribbean country!) where she was invited to participate in the National Writing Project. Shortly thereafter, she joined New Orleans Access Television as Education Coordinator and Senior Writer where she produced educational programming, wrote and administered several training grants, consulted on all film training programs developed by the City of New Orleans, and helped design curriculum for media programs offered in local schools. In addition, Mimi wrote the curriculum for film and video production, certified by the State of Louisiana, and taught Screenwriting and Introduction to Production at Louisiana Technical College. In 2009, Mimi returned to New York and to Monroe College as Director of the Writing Center and Writing Across the Curriculum. She was also a member of the Honors Executive Board, the Honors Program Coordinator for the Bronx campus, and taught Honors sections of Film as Literature, Expository Writing, and The Psychology of Child Development. Formerly the English and World Languages Department Head, Mimi currently teaches English and Humanities classes at Fusion Academy, a progressive private school in Southlake, Texas, where the student-teacher ratio is 1:1. At Fusion, Mimi writes and customizes her curriculum to meet each student's learning style and interests, while tailoring the instruction to capitalize on strengths and develop academic areas of growth and life skills. Her pedagogical approach is rooted in inquiry-based learning, where students develop authentic, real-world connections to the content through exploration and high-level questioning. A freelance writer since 2003, Mimi writes grants, submissions for RFQs and RFPs, feasibility studies, advertising copy, and screenplays. One of her feature-length screenplays was independently produced and internationally distributed through Maverick Entertainment. An avid traveler, Mimi has been to 40 US states and 14 foreign countries. She is literate in Spanish, and conversational in French and Italian. She earned her BA from the University of Massachusetts, her MA from Boston University, and a certificate from Harvard University's Graduate School of Design. When she's not scolding her students for ending sentences in prepositions, Mimi is hanging out with her dog Phoenix, attending nerdy events, spending time with her family, and practicing Jedi mind tricks on unsuspecting Padawans. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/deeplyrootedshow/message

Pete is a veteran in the education industry. Over the past 20 years, he has opened over 120 schools and acquired more than 25 others. His experience in education spans president and CEO roles of organizations in the private school, charter school, and early education industries. He also served as a public school board member in his local community for 5 years. Pete is currently the founder and CEO of Fusion Education Group. Launched in 2007, the company made five acquisitions in its first two years. The last acquisition in December 2008 was the original Fusion Academy campus. Within a few years, the company determined that Fusion's unique model and high growth potential made it a significant growth opportunity. Thus, the company sold off its non-Fusion schools to focus entirely on the national expansion of the Fusion Academy model. Today, there are more than 60 Fusion campuses in operation around the nation. In 2019, the company acquired Futures Academy, another one-to-one school model with 16 locations in the state of California. In 2020, the company launched Fusion Global Academy (FGA), a one-to-one virtual school that provides 100% live instruction in every class. FGA serves online students throughout the United States and internationally. Today, Fusion Education Group, headquartered in Grand Rapids, Michigan, operates nearly 80 Fusion and Futures Academies across 16 states and the District of Columbia. All Fusion Academies, Futures Academies, and FGA provide completely individualized programs based on the needs of each student. Virtually all classes are taught in a one-to-one environment: one student, one teacher. All schools offer programs for 6-12 grade students. Ruppert started his career with Procter and Gamble. He entered the education industry when he was hired as president of National Heritage Academies (NHA) in May 1997. During his eight years as president of NHA, Ruppert led the expansion of the company from four schools to 51 schools across five states. In addition to his work, Pete is the author of “Limitless: Nive Steps to Launch Your One Extraordinary Life.” He also co-founded “Armed Forces Thanksgiving,” an annual celebration and education event that raises money for military veterans throughout West Michigan. Pete holds a BA in Economics from DePauw University and an MBA from the Harvard Business School. He grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio. He and his wife, Jessica, have four children; three sons and a daughter and reside in East Grand Rapids, Michigan. What You Will Learn: How Pete's career path led to the education field, and why education became a 25-year passion that led to the creation of Fusion Education Group How Pete and his team achieved a careful balance between the educational aspect of their organization and the business side Why the current system of grouping students by age rather than ability isn't the best approach to meet students' needs, and how Pete is doing things differently Why finding and surrounding yourself with the right people and empowering them to do their best work is crucial for your success Why having access to extra capital through outside funding is an important leg up in growing your business, and why bootstrapping isn't always the best solution Why scaling your business requires “giving up” authority, responsibility, and control over the day to day operations so that you can focus on long term strategy What strategies and processes Pete uses to hire, develop and nurture key leaders within his organization How to learn to avoid micromanaging your team and instead trust them to do the job the right way while still offering support, communication, and feedback Why a regular meeting cadence is key to ensuring that everyone on the team is moving in the same direction How studying other successful people helped Pete determine the nine “traits of a champion”, and how that list became the backbone of his book “Limitless” Resources: Website: https://peteruppert.com/ LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/peter-ruppert-986744a LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/company/american-education-group Facebook: www.facebook.com/fusionacademy/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/petergruppert Twitter: https://twitter.com/fusionacademy Additional Resources: Elite Business Health Assessment: https://growwithelite.com/health Email: info@GrowWithElite.com Website: https://growwithelite.com/

Wesley Geer has been a professional musician for over 20 years. He first found success as the founding member of Jive Records artist Hed P.E. as guitarist, songwriter, and producer. After touring the world for eight years, Wes left the band for a lifestyle change and ultimately landed in rehab. Then in 2010, at almost three years sober, he was approached to play with the legendary band Korn. He joined Korn and worked with them as their touring guitarist for the next several years, traveling to 42 countries, headlining shows, playing to crowds of 80,000 people, and appearing on a number of recordings and cable and TV shows. His music has been featured in many feature films, video games, radio, and television shows.Wes also has long had a passion for teaching music. Previously a music teacher at The Fusion Academy's Huntington Beach campus, Wes taught Recording Arts, Drums, and Guitar.“I've always had a desire to teach and help people through music. It was while teaching at Fusion Academy, that I really realized the level of engagement the students would have when we were ‘writing a song' together, and then record it! It gave such a greater sense of purpose to our music. and a greater connection between us.But it was when I was in treatment that I realized how much music could help [me] get through those tough emotions that run so rampant, especially in the early days. Being totally sober and dealing with the bottom I had hit -strumming the guitar was the only thing that would bring me peace. Everyone would wait in line for their turn to play, even people who had never played guitar. These ingredients really helped me realize this combination had the potential to be a powerful tool within the recovery community. When I looked around, music seemed to be missing from the treatment curriculum. It became my dream to create a music program that could help all those in need.". . . Imagine a learning environment with one student and one teacher in the classroom. For some, this may seem too good to be true. For others, there are many questions that arise, like socializing, independent work, and how to find success with this model. Today, Jaime Porras and Vailet Yarijanian from Fusion Academy join me in a discussion about a customizable 1:1 learning experience for middle and high school students.   In this episode, Jaime and Vailet explain how Fusion Academy works and how even the students who are okay in a traditional setting can thrive in this type of learning environment. They answer the commonly asked questions about learning differences, socialization, and academic anxiety in adolescent students and share successes they have found over the years. Fusion offers so many options for every kind of learner and has campuses all over the country. So listen to find out more about this engaging and innovative approach to education and how it might help your child succeed.   Show Notes: [1:48] - Some students do not thrive in a traditional learning environment. [2:58] - Fusion is a fully accredited middle and high school with a completely customizable curriculum for each student to find success. [4:10] - Fusion has 70 campuses in the country and a global program. [5:28] - This individualized approach is successful because teachers are able to differentiate and customize the learning experience for each student. [7:08] - Jaime describes a customized schedule that would vary per student based on their needs. [8:50] - Fusion is not a specific type of school. Vailet explains their model. [10:01] - Fusion also offers fully customizable and flexible scheduling with early and late hours of operation. [11:14] - At the moment, Fusion offers courses for middle and high school due to the level of autonomy needed for students to work independently. [13:06] - To address social skills and interaction, Vailet describes Homework Cafes. [14:44] - There are also club offerings on each campus. [16:10] - If a club doesn't exist, students can write proposals and create them with a teacher's guidance. [17:31] - Because of the one on one environment, students are less likely to develop social anxiety regarding their academic weaknesses. [19:01] - At Fusion, they teach to the student, not the standard. [21:11] - In addition to social interactions, there are opportunities for academic socialization. [22:45] - Vailet gives an example of social stigma that is avoided with a 1:1 model. [25:10] - What kind of student benefits from this kind of learning model? [26:32] - Even students who do fine in a traditional classroom might not be thriving there. [29:13] - Students with attention issues but don't qualify for services thrive in this setting. [30:17] - COVID changed things drastically for education. [32:48] - For Fusion, there is no yearly commitment. You can take a few classes at a time. [34:41] - Fusion looks at outcomes per individual student and changes the game plan if needed. [36:01] - Students can take a single course in an area of weakness and most schools of record will work with Fusion. [38:14] - Many parents are looking for alternative education models during the COVID-19 pandemic.   About Fusion Academy: As the nation's most engaging educational experience, Fusion Academy can help your middle or high school student rediscover their love of learning. With one student and one teacher per classroom, the entire school journey is individualized for your child. For the 2021-2022 school year we are still offering customized options of in-person, hybrid, and virtual learning. We're ready to customize a plan that works best for your student and what they're comfortable with this fall. We're able to be flexible so we can provide the stability your family needs during these uncertain times. No matter where you live, I encourage you to sign up for Olga's virtual lunch & learns - email her for more information. Students have a 1 to 1 relationship with their teachers. After every class, there is an hour set aside for "Homework Cafe". I think it's a fantastic model. It beats the heck out of me doing work on the school bus ride home or in study hall (or not at all). There are ~ 51 campuses around the country. Your child can also go to the global campus. It is a private pay school. Some children struggling in public schools may use Fusion as a nonpublic placement. You can use a 529 or ABLE account to pay. 529 account limits are $10k/year. Olga shares who would not be successful with Fusion. It made sense to me. If a child is not at least to grade 6 academically; can't work independently, or has aggressive tendencies Fusion may not be a good fit. Ruppert   In this episode of Her Success Story, Ivy Slater talks with Peter Ruppert, veteran in the education industry and serial entrepreneur, about launching and scaling an education business, visionary thinking, moving to the virtual business model, and how systems support opportunity.  In this episode, we discuss: How a businessman gets into education How values play a role in our business decisions Business model development Launching and scaling an education  business How to deal with major setbacks in your business Luck is when preparation meets opportunity The pandemic’s impact on growth and education Moving to the virtual business model How being a visionary thinker can help you meet challenges successfully Stepping into opportunity with systems Finding time for more Reframing negatives thoughts for positive outcomes Learn More about Peter: Pete is a veteran in the education industry.  Over the past 20 years, he has opened over 100 schools and acquired more than 25 others. The last acquisition in December, 2008 was the original Fusion Academy campus.  Within a few years, the company determined that Fusion’s unique model and high growth potential made it a significant growth opportunity.  Thus, the company sold off its non-Fusion schools in order to focus entirely on the national expansion of the Fusion Academy model.  Today, there are more than 60 Fusion campuses in operation around the nation. In 2019, the company acquired Futures Academy, another one-to one school model with 16 locations in the state of California.   In 2020, the company launched Fusion Global Academy (FGA), a one-to-one virtual school that provides 100% live instruction in every class.  FGA serves on-line students throughout the United States and internationally.  Today, Fusion Education Group, headquartered in Grand Rapids, Michigan, operates more than 75 Fusion and Futures Academies across 16 states and District of Columbia. All Fusion Academies, Futures Academies and FGA provide completely individualized programs based on the needs of each student.  Virtually all classes are taught in a one-to-one environment: one student, one teacher. Fusion Education offers programs for 6-12 grade students. Ruppert started his career with Procter and Gamble.  He entered the education industry when he was hired as president of National Heritage Academies in May, 1997.  During his eight years as president of NHA, Ruppert led the expansion of the company from four schools to 51 schools across five states.   Pete holds a BA in Economics from DePauw University and an MBA from the Harvard Business School.  He grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio.  He and his wife, Jessica, have four children; three sons and a daughter, and reside in East Grand Rapids, Michigan. Alex and Maggie discuss the importance and process of building customized learning plans for students, the benefits of social emotional learning, and how we ensure SEL continues to be prioritized as we educate through a pandemic.Key Takeaways:There are a lot of pressures on modern teachers. Educators are expected to wear many different hats and the system puts a tremendous amount of strain on the teachers we have. This can impact the educational experience. As educators, we need to keep the health and education of the children top of mind and try to cut out the rest of the noise.Social emotional learning is important but the benefits of one on one learning are undeniable. In a perfect world, children would be taught one on one and would reep the benefits of social emotional learning from other things like team sports and dorm life.Learn more about Maggie here: https://www.fusionacademy.com/campuses/greenwich/teachers/maggie-gregory/Learn more about Fusion Academy here: https://www.fusionacademy.com/

Over the past few years, anxiety and depression have escalated severely in boys and girls from a young age. In order to address these issues, we have to come together as a society and begin to implement steps to teach youth to cope and properly evaluate their emotional state with support.  In this episode, leading experts in learning deficiencies and clinical disorders such as ADHD, Anxiety, Perfectionism, and Depression discuss the major leading issues in how our education system is handling these issues.  This panel conversation features your hosts, Amanda Selogie and Vickie Brett, Dr. Ryan, Dr. Kara, and Dr. Jackie as they dissect what it really looks like to give the youth tools in order to become productive members of society.  They not only discuss how to identify symptoms of a clinical disorder, but how to further extend our assistance as parents and educators in order to prevent further struggling. This conversation presents tangible concepts that anyone can practice in order to create a safer environment for those struggling around them.   Show Highlights:  Symptoms that typically bring students into Fusion Academy for support  How to identify symptoms of anxiety in kids who are naturally introverted  Schools have to explore data that is often not utilized in order to further understand students learning deficiencies  Schools are not equipped to teach children how to cope with anxiety and other disorders because they’re not trained on how to Why asking questions may not help students and why it’s important for parents to learn how to listen  Looking out for signs to tell if students are struggling and designing a structure to help deteriorate anxiety  Taking steps to educate teachers  How the perception of social normalities can divert attention from students who may be struggling The lack of educating students going into college on the purpose is leading to more failures due to a lack of understanding of what they like or should pursue We need to allow youth as a society that failure is okay and necessary for growth Reinforcing a mentality of dealing with threats  Putting aside your own experiences to evaluate what environment works best for an individual and making sure children are fully equipped to be on their own  Having clear communication with your children to help them process their emotions and experiences fully through listening and self-evaluative questions  Teaching youth how to properly regulate emotions and that it’s okay to get help  Regulating and teaching social media responsibility and how it influences self-image  Addressing social and emotional learning in schools  Teaching students to implement comprehensive thought in all aspects of life  Links/Resources: Thank you for listening! Amanda and Vickie are excited to bring you the panel discussion, “Building the Bridge Between Reading Literacy and the Consequences of Falling Behind” from October 24th, and which raised nearly $13,000. This money will be used towards providing free legal services to 24 families. Panelists discuss what happens when literacy education fails, what happens when kids fall through the cracks and the mental health impact of this. Special shoutout to Sandra and Roger, whose family wasn’t able to make the event but were major donors to the event, Fusion Academy, a title sponsor and co-hosts, the panelists, sponsors, and the nearly 100 attendees. Thank you all for helping to make this the success that it was! Be sure to listen for a special announcement about the Inclusive Education Project! Show Highlights: Vanessa Kayrell, Head of School at Fusion Academy in Mission Viejo, introduces the panelists: Robin Podway, Head of School at Fusion Academy in Huntington Beach; Dr. George Tucker, a clinical psychologist and author of Problem Children: It’s Not Always the Parents’ Fault; Cathy Johnson, Founder of the Johnson Academy; Dr. Ellis Crasnow, Director of STEM³ Academy and STEM Education for The Help Group; and Javier Arguello, Founder and Executive Director of COGx. Statistics from the National Assessment of Educational Progress are presented: 1/3 of 4th graders are proficient in reading. 2/3 of students who cannot read proficiently by the end of 4th grade will end up in jail or on welfare. 1 in 4 children in America grow up without learning how to read. Students who don’t read proficiently by the 3rd grade are four times more likely to drop out of school. As of 2011, America was the only free-market country where the current generation was less educated than the previous one. Nearly 85% of the juveniles who faced court in the juvenile system are functionally illiterate, proving that there’s a close relationship between illiteracy and crime. 53% of 4th graders admitted to reading recreationally almost every day, while only 20% of 8th graders could say the same. 75% of Americans who receive food stamps perform at the lowest two levels of literacy. 90% of high school dropouts are on welfare. Panelists discuss the inspiration for their work and what drives them: How top universities have known so much about cognitive neuroscience for many years, but school systems are not using the science. The rolling out of a platform for global, professional development for educators in partnership with the University of Pennsylvania. Working in the prison systems and seeing the illiteracy there. Also, what can we do with the idea that our brains continue to develop up until about age 26? Building on strengths and helping them before they fall through the cracks. Panelists cover: approaches that bring success: what we can do differently technology as a learning tool strength-based learning intervention through social policy remediation strategies Panelists explore: when kids learn ok, but their social learning and body awareness is not ok: what we can do to help them addressing anxiety and depression issues the impact of “learned helplessness” Ways that we can advocate for our own kids and make a difference in the lives of those we impact on a daily basis. Wesley Geer is a professional guitar player, songwriter, recording artist, and producer, who signed his first record deal to Jive Records with the band he founded, (Hed) P.E.  Wes toured the world for nearly a decade, and the band sold over 1 million records worldwide.   Their music was on high rotation on MTV, radio stations, as well as having numerous placements in popular feature films, TV and video games.  What many didn't know at the time was while he was masterminding, and leading his band to the member's first-ever record deal, Wes was a full-blown drug addict, using alcohol, methamphetamines and other drugs, daily, for years.   As a progressive disease, no matter the efforts to quell his addiction and control it, things continually got worse.   After a nearly a decade of touring the world, with the biggest names in rock, Wes' life was imploding, and he finally left in 2003, for a ‘lifestyle change' that ultimately ended him up in rehab in 2004. In rehab, he learned tools for recovery and latched onto the stories of others that had overcome their addictions, stories of people being so far down in a deadly hole, but somehow not only got sober but achieved great things.  “These stories of hope were the guiding force that leads me out. These people had a tangible program of recovery proven to work, so I gave it a shot.”  The following years found Wes as an instructor at Fusion Academy & Learning Center, an alternative school where he taught music to 6th through 12th graders who had struggled in more traditional academic settings. He traveled the world performing in more than 40 countries with the multi-platinum stars, as well as appeared numerous live televised and studio recording sessions.   Geer was moved to give back, wanting to create something that could help people who struggled the same way he had.  He founded Rock to Recovery (R2R), a non-profit organization created in late 2012 with the purpose of providing those in various types of treatment and recovery programs the cathartic, uplifting, healing experience of connectivity through playing music.  It's a therapy Geer himself turned to after years of abusing drugs and alcohol. During his stay in rehab, he admits that music was his “most intimate friend” during his darkest days, allowing him to cope with the rollercoaster of emotions that consumed his early days in treatment.  “I remember being so raw, newly sober.  I picked up my guitar and I just started strumming, and that simple act of strumming a few chords had an impact on me like never before. The whole milieu would write these silly songs and we'd forget everything, and even the darkest, shy personalities would start singing and dancing.  That always stuck with me.” Rock to Recovery, with Geer and his staff of 9 fellow sober musicians now partner with over 100 treatment programs across LA, Orange, and San Diego counties, providing more nearly 450+ sessions each month to people struggling with addiction, mental health, eating disorders, at–risk youth, and Wounded Warriors.

What exactly are “related services” and when are certain services and needs considered medical? That's what we discuss in this episode.  Be sure to tune in to next week’s episode where we discuss the use of CBD oil by students on school campuses and whether or not that is considered a medical need.   Join the discussion in our private Facebook Group - www.facebook.com/groups/ieppodcast For full show transcript, visit site here. What We Discuss in This Episode: The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) makes available a free and appropriate public education to eligible children with disabilities and ensures special education and related services to those children. What exactly are considered “related services”? Even if a need is deemed a medical necessity, it can still impact education and thus a school must provide that service Cases that further explain what “related services” are Irving Independent School District vs. Tatro (1984) - Court found that catheterization was a related service under the now IDEA and the school had to provide that service during school hours Cedar Rapids Community School District vs. Garret F. (1999) – Court found that the IDEA requires school boards to provide continuous nursing services to students with special needs. Here, the Court found that a student who was wheelchair-bound and ventilator dependent, required, in part, a responsible individual nearby to attend to certain physical needs during the school day. Does the law require school personnel to be trained to provide certain medical services? Resources Mentioned: 20 U.S.C. Section 1401(26) defines “related services” IDEA Thank you for listening! Previously a music teacher at The Fusion Academy’s Huntington Beach campus, Wes taught Recording Arts, Drums, and Guitar.“I’ve always had a desire to teach and help people through music. It was while teaching at Fusion Academy, that I really realized the level of engagement the students would have when we were ‘writing a song’ together, and then record it! It became my dream to create a music program that could help all those in need.". . . Self-taught glitch artist, out of the box creative thinker.  Today’s guest Sara Goodman works with me at Fusion Academy in Evanston and always has an interesting project to share or is traveling both near and far for exhibitions and digital media showcases.  Sara has designed cover art for electronic bands, expressed themselves through video art and experimental music and will also be publishing a book of poetry in the near future.  I decided to take an opportunity to interview most, if not all, of my many great co-workers and Sara was definitely the first to avidly volunteer to talk with me about her creative process, vaporwave, glitch art, and so much more!  Please check out her work via the links below and stay tuned for more great work from this remarkable talent and other great educators soon! https://society6.com/saranaomigoodman https://youtube.com/user/MascaraAndNineEyes https://soundcloud.com/telesphorosnine https://mascara.bandcamp.com/ http://cargocollective.com/glitchartistscollective/Sara-Goodman For more episodes of this and other great shows: http://voicesvisions.net http://nowplayingnetwork.net

Fusion: Creating Better Humans On The Planet” Show Guest: Michelle Gilman Allen and his guest, Michelle Gilman, explore what it means to create 'better humans on the planet', as well as greater academic performers. Gilman feels strongly that today's educational approach is overlooking the fact that students are daughters, sons, sisters, brothers, girlfriends, boyfriends, etc. - with a plethora of issues and thoughts surrounding these roles. Listen and learn how we all can help create happier, healthier and greater humans to be part of the next generation! Fusion Academy's one teacher to one student per subject approach provides an educational environment that goes beyond academics to create a better, more compassionate, creative and industrious human being. Gilman and her colleagues believe that creating a better human on the planet is a much higher calling in the long run than creating the next accountant or the next lawyer. They want our kids to leave feeling more confident, more aware of themselves, more accepting of both their strengths and their weaknesses, and on a path that will lead to success in all areas of their lives. ABOUT MICHELLE GILMAN Michelle Rose Gilman, President and Founder, started Fusion Academy in 1989 with six students. She holds a Bachelors of Science degree in Specialized Education from the University of South Florida. Prior to launching Fusion Academy, she spent 17 years creating social-skills and self-esteem workshops for children of all ages. Michelle is the author of ten books geared toward students and their parents.
