So that's it then, at least until the next time. Christopher Luxon and his camp stared down the would-be challengers to his leadership, and he lives to fight another election. What happens after that is anybody's guess – win or lose. Chris Penk, the stalking horse, paid the price for calling a confidence motion, stripped of his ministerial portfolios, kicked down to the bottom of the backbenches to sit in purgatory, and he's announced he'll retire from politics at the election. There are all sorts of reckons about who he was acting for, who was really behind the coup, why it failed, and no doubt that will keep the political journos and the Wellington cabal in a lather for the next few weeks to come. But the end result is, despite all the fevered speculation, another challenge to the Prime Minister's leadership was mounted and another challenge was bested. What a sorry, sorry state of affairs. Credit to the Prime Minister for having the cojones to stare down the perfidious ne'er do wells within his own caucus. He doesn't have to do the job, he doesn't need to do the job, yet he was determined to stick it out and finish the job in his own time and in his own way. Credit too to him for keeping excellent ministers where they are doing good work, when surely a dark deep recess of his heart must wish there was still the ability to hang, draw, and quarter traitors. Would have taken a big deep breath and then move on. The ministers are doing good work for New Zealanders while undermining their boss and their party, and to be able to set aside an entirely understandable desire for vengeance shows real maturity and leadership. But where does it leave erstwhile National voters? Quite clearly the caucus is full of liars and traitors and grasping opportunists, no different I suppose to most other political parties, but it doesn't make me feel great voting for them. I know I should accept that this is politics, but why? You wouldn't put up with that in friendships, you wouldn't put up with that in your own workplace. Why do you have to accept undermining, duplicitous, two faced, pledging loyalty with one hand, hugging with one hand while the other hand holds the knife? I find it despicable. Is loyalty an old-fashioned virtue? I wouldn't have thought so. Anyway, why should people be able to get away with pledging their loyalty, telling the public, “Oh yes look, we're absolutely behind the leader," only to be found to be actively undermining both the leader and the party? And what sort of thinking are you getting if a significant cabal within National thinks it's a great idea to roll a leader who is leading a party that could form a government 90 days before the election? It hardly shows the brains trust, does it? To have a group of people going, “Hey, I know, why don't we roll the leader of our party and the Prime Minister 90 days before an election? Simon O'Connor went through three changes in leadership during his time in Parliament. He speaks to Ingrid Hipkiss about the process behind a change in leadership.

A senior National MP's throwing cold water on the idea the Prime Minister will be voted out of his job as National party leader today. Mark Mitchell says there's been a lot of speculation from media commentators about what will happen, but there's no confirmation. He told Mike Hosking everyone's getting ahead of themselves. Mitchell says he sat with Luxon until late last night to make sure he's in the "strongest possible position today and supported for the caucus meeting". He said he'd seen media reports claiming Chris Penk had been hitting the phones to shore up support for Erica Stanford, but stressed there would be no discussions until the 9.30am meeting. Affirming his loyalty to Luxon as leader, Mitchell described himself as "very old-fashioned" and said he took "great offence" to people who work outside that operandus. "If you've got someone that's not been loyal to the leader inside the caucus, you can't do it publicly. You actually front up and sit down and say, 'These are what the issues are'," he said. Here's how this morning is going to play out. At 9:30am, any member of National's caucus can call a no-confidence vote in Luxon's leadership. The party's constitution calls these guys the Parliamentary Section. They vote. It's majority rules. If there's a vacancy, i.e. if Luxon is goneburger, then they elect a new leader or leaders. It's majority rules. So if a majority of MPs want change, then Luxon is gone. History tells us most leaders would do the honourable thing and stand aside before it gets to this point. Bolger did it when Shipley led a coup. Luxon would be no different. It's possible this could happen before 9:30am. We could see the PM resign as leader of National ahead of caucus, and effectively as PM in a matter of hours. If the numbers are not in his favour, the writing's on the wall, he could clear the decks for the caucus to focus on electing his replacement. I've been speaking to National party MPs and former MPs over the past two weeks. Some are furious with Luxon's leadership. Own goals. Foot-in-mouth disease. Lack of discipline. There's a feeling that Key and others in the party have been covering for Luxon's mistakes, hammering the message that any change will mean catastrophe come polling day. Talk of a Stanford/Mitchell ticket with Bishop as Finance tells you that unlike last time, the leadership hopefuls have organised with a viable alternative – notably excluding Nicola Willis. Anyone who tells you they know what will happen today is making it up. As much as 25% of the caucus are set to lose their jobs on current polling. If Luxon loses his today, it will be a gamble, a roll of the dice, a risk. If they stick with Luxon, how can you credibly say you're unified behind your leader after two spills in four months? It was a masterful piece of politicking yesterday from the Prime Minister. The first time I think I've seen him as a politician rather than a CEO. He told his caucus to put up or shut up. He sent a message to the disaffected and the dissatisfied in the party to lay their cards on the table. And when it came down to it, the halt, the lame, and the dispossessed simply didn't have the numbers, the alternative, or the cajónes to make a challenge. If you're a member or a supporter of National, of course you're not going to like the numbers the polls are delivering. You're not going to like seeing your leader languishing in the doldrums in the preferred Prime Minister poll. But I would venture you would like even less backbenchers fomenting dissent and giving the media a reason to write about the party for all the wrong reasons. Mike named the feckless five yesterday. They claim they had nothing to do with any leaks to the media. They have all pledged their fealty to their leader, Christopher Luxon, and I only hope he made them kiss his ring yesterday to prove their faithfulness and their loyalty. I think, but then I would, wouldn't I, that Christopher Luxon has come out of yesterday's caucus meeting looking stronger than he did last week. He stared them in the eye, said show me what you've got. Not quite enough is it lads and lasses? And off they went. But what do you do if you're in one of the feckless five's electorates and you're brassed off with them? You might not want to give them your vote, but then if you don't vote for them, it harms the National Party. Do you give your electorate vote to ACT or New Zealand First and your party vote to National? And when you vote for an electorate MP, are you voting for someone who will act in your interests first or in the party's interests? When you look at anybody, I mean these five say they didn't do it. They were named as the ones and when you're talking to the media, the thing is the media know who you are. So it makes it a little difficult. Joseph Mooney, Tim van de Molen, Barbara Kuriger, Andrew Bayly, and Sam Uffindell all say it wasn't me. The old Shaggy song springs to mind. But that's the thing, they say it wasn't them; they've pledged loyalty. But if you are, and when you look at the previous coups, if you're one of those who jumps on board a coup, who decides that they will put their money on a different horse, you're basically lazy. Because being a backbencher is hard work. There's nothing glamorous about it. It is boring, it is thankless, there are no baubles of office, no perks of the job – it is a hard grind. At least when you get to minister level you get the car, more money, and you get people who kind of respect you and you get to make a difference. You get to make change through the hard work of drafting policy and working with bureaucrats and working with other members of Parliament. But you can actually get things done. As a backbencher you can't. It's really, really boring. So what people who jump ship do is look to leapfrog over other backbenchers because they get rewarded. If they cosy up to somebody who's mounting a challenge, they can expect to get rewarded with a plum job and not have to do the hard graft. So they're lazy as well as feckless. There are so many people who have benefited from this dissent: Labour, New Zealand First. Although yesterday with his confidence call, I'd argue Christopher Luxon did get some benefit from that. Anybody who is unhappy with the leadership, anybody who is not willing to do the hard graft on the backbenches and get the good jobs through sheer talent and hard work, anybody who is willing to sacrifice the good of the party for personal ambition, anybody who's willing to tell fibs should resign. The reputations of the five MPs believed to be frustrated with Christopher Luxon's leadership are suffering. Luxon passed a vote of confidence at yesterday's lengthy caucus meeting, but MPs aren't revealing details of the vote, including how many of them supported Luxon. The MPs responsible for leaks to the media are understood to be Joseph Mooney, Andrew Bayly, Sam Uffindell, Barbara Kuriger, and Tim van de Molen. However, they're all denying their involvement. Senior Political Correspondent Barry Soper told Kerre Woodham that there are bound to be disgruntled people in the party, but you have to take people at their word if they deny their involvement. He says that whoever it is, they're in politics for the good of the country, not their own good, and it's a pity a few of them can't seem to get that into perspective. Christopher Luxon says the New Zealand First deputy leader's comments were "alarmist" and "scaremongering". Labour's Ginny Andersen told Mike Hosking the Prime Minister should go further and call the comments out as racist. National's Mark Mitchell says Jones does have a unique way of communicating, but he should clearly choose his words more carefully. Break 1: WAGES   STORY 1: Robbery Crew Leader Receives 4 Consecutive Life Sentences — Plus Another 90 30-year-old Dametrius Marquel Sims has been given four successive life terms, alongside an extra 90 years in jail, for spearheading a robbery crew that targeted multiple Gwinnett eateries in 2017, including a shooting event at Marco's Pizza. A jury found Sims guilty of armed robbery, attempted armed robbery, aggravated assault, and firearm possession charges. His group was responsible for robbing five restaurants and a package store between August and October 2017. Oshay Howard and Trevonne Poole, two additional members of the crew, were convicted and sentenced for their involvement in the robberies. Sims' violent crime spree terrified Gwinnett County merchants, however, the district attorney's office commended the jury's verdict and efforts to bring him to justice. STORY 2: 2 Gwinnett Students Selected As Jackson EMC Delegates For Youth Tour High school students Alvaro Saldarriaga (Sal-da-rri-a-ga ) Arcila and Jabez Melaku (M EH L AH K UW) from Gwinnett County have been chosen as representatives for Jackson EMC at the 2024 Washington Youth Tour. This fully funded leadership development initiative is sponsored by Georgia's electric cooperatives and coordinated by the NRECA. Both Arcila, a junior at McClure Health Sciences High School, and Melaku, a junior at Archer High School, were selected based on their academic records, service to the community, and leadership capabilities. The tour aims to promote collaboration, integrity, and teamwork among participating students. Arcila is engaged in several extracurricular activities and contemplates a career in either law or engineering, while Melaku, who serves as the vice president of community service, plans to venture into engineering. The tour, which is scheduled to take place from June 14-21, has offered leadership opportunities to thousands of students since its inception in 1965. STORY 3: Gwinnett Tech Students Impress At State SkillsUSA Competition Gwinnett Technical College students showcased their exceptional skills at the SkillsUSA Georgia Postsecondary State Leadership & Skills Conference, securing a total of 43 medals. This included 24 gold, 8 silver, and 11 bronze awards. The college's SkillsUSA chapter was also recognized with prestigious accolades, receiving both Level 1 and Level 2 Chapter of Distinction GOLD Level titles. The chapter ranks third in Georgia in terms of membership. Humanities instructor, Mohamed Belal, received the SkillsUSA Georgia Postsecondary Advisor of the Year award, further highlighting the college's commitment to quality education and workforce preparation. Break 2: GCPS – INGLES 4   STORY 4: Gwinnett Schools Honors Transportation Staff Gwinnett County Public Schools celebrated the remarkable service of 49 transportation professionals at its annual banquet. The event recognized their crucial role in safely transporting more than 130,000 students. Among the honorees were Laura Howell and Monica Mau, who were awarded the title of School Bus Managers of the Year. Stacy Welch received the School Bus Monitor of the Year award, while the Fleet Technician of the Year award went to Ronnie Alston. Howell and Mau were acknowledged for their contributions to regular and special education transportation respectively. Welch was commended for her work with students with special needs. Alston's award highlighted his dedication, further underscored by his personal connection to the school system as a parent. The selection process for these awards was comprehensive, involving written and driving skills tests and an evaluation by a judging panel. STORY 5: Senators question economic development chief on delayed EV plant Electric vehicle manufacturer, Rivian, has decided to indefinitely delay the construction of its new manufacturing plant near Covington, Georgia. This decision was met with disappointment from Georgia's top economic development official, Pat Wilson, even though he confirmed that Rivian remains committed to the state.   Despite this setback, Rivian intends to produce its new R2 midsize SUV model at an existing facility located in Illinois. The state and local authorities had previously offered Rivian incentives worth $1.5 billion, including tax credits and infrastructure improvements, to secure the deal.   So far, Rivian has made two payments amounting to $3 million to the local development authority. While the project is currently on hold, there are concerns among senators about the site remaining vacant until 2030. He has served as a board member or adviser to eight foundations and on the Boards of many organizations including the Rocky Mountain Institute, the Aldo Leopold Foundation, and the Bioneers. Currently, he is a Trustee of the Alliance for Sustainable Colorado and Children and Nature Network. He has been awarded nine honorary degrees and a dozen other awards including a Lyndhurst Prize, a National Achievement Award from the National Wildlife Federation, a “Visionary Leadership Award” from Second Nature, a National Leadership award from the U.S. Green Building Council, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the North American Association for Environmental Education, the 2018 Leadership Award from the American Renewable Energy Institute, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from Green Energy Ohio. He has lectured at hundreds of colleges and universities throughout the U.S., Europe, and Asia. He is a founder of: the Atlanta Environmental Symposium (1972-1974), the Meadowcreek Project (1979-1990), the Oberlin Project (2007-2017), the journal Solutions, and of the State of American Democracy Project 2017-present). He headed the effort to design, fund, and build the Adam Joseph Lewis Center, which was named by an AIA panel in 2010 as “the most important green building of the past thirty years;” . . . “one of thirty milestone buildings of the twentieth century” by the U.S. Department of Energy, and selected as one of “52 game changing buildings of the past 170 years” by the editors of Building Design + Construction Magazine  (2016). He was instrumental in the design and funding for the Platinum-rated Peter B. Lewis Gateway Center (hotel + conference center). The recording you'll hear in this episode took place at our National Leadership and Performance Summit in Annapolis, Maryland, in April 2023. It features FDNY Captain of Rescue Co. 2, Liam Flaherty. Captain Flaherty joined the FDNY in 1990. He currently serves as the company commander of Rescue Co. 2, which he's been assigned to for the past decade. Liam was previously assigned to Rescue Co. 2 and Ladder Co. 157 as a Lieutenant and Rescue Co. 4 and Ladder Co. 44 as a firefighter. He is an adjunct instructor at the FDNY's Technical Rescue School and was instrumental in the development of the course curriculum for the Advanced Firefighter Rescue and Removal Training for FDNY Special Operations Command firefighters and officers. As many listeners to this podcast know, fireground commanders rely on the experience and capabilities of rescue companies at complex fires and emergencies. More specifically, incident commanders rely on rescue companies to problem solve at fires where members are in distress or when conditions make members more susceptible to distress. Liam is one of FDNY's most experienced and respected fireground leaders, and one of the Department's most fervent advocates for mission-oriented service. Perhaps equally significant, Liam has led the FDNY's Emerald Society band at several hundred line of duty funerals over the course of the past 25 plus years.

Lieutenant Commander Ty Daniels, USNR, graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 2012 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Ocean Engineering. Afloat, Ty completed his division officer tour aboard the Los Angeles Class submarine USS JEFFERSON CITY (SSN 759) as the Assistant Engineer and then aboard the ballistic missile submarine USS ALABAMA GOLD (SSB 731) as the Engineer Officer. During his sea tours he completed one Western Pacific deployment and three Strategic Deterrent Patrols. Ashore, Ty served as the Character Development Officer at the United States Naval Academy where he taught leadership and ethics as well as supported submarine engagement initiatives. Ty left active service with the US Navy in September 2022 and currently works for Amazon Web Services. He continues to serve with the US Navy Reserves and is assigned to Submarine Group 8.
