Secretary of Health and Human Services, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. says, "I don't want to tell you what you can and cannot eat. I just want you to know what you're eating."   Today's episode is about providing solutions to help you cut out the middleman and take control so you KNOW what you're feeding your family - and can support local, small family farms along the way.   In this information-packed episode of the Nutritional Therapy & Wellness Podcast, host Jamie Belz welcomes Alexia Kulwiec, Executive Director of the Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund, for a solution-focused conversation on how to legally source raw milk, pasture-raised meat, and nutrient-dense whole foods directly from local farmers.   We're not just talking about what not to eat—this is your real-world roadmap to clean food access in a system that often seems stacked against us and our access to nutrient-dense foods from local farmers.   From raw cheese loopholes and herdshares to custom meat processing, cottage food laws, and buying club tips, we explore how families can cut through red tape and bring real, nutrient-dense, ethically raised, and legally protected food to the table. Whether you've been making “egg deals in gas station parking lots” or just trying to figure out how to find a trustworthy source for raw milk, this episode is both empowering and practical.   Alexia explains:   Why it's so hard to legally access raw dairy and clean meat in many states How federal and state food laws are designed to favor industrial agriculture over local farms What legal loopholes consumers and small farms are using (herdshares, custom exempt meat, cottage food laws) The truth about organic certification (and why it's not the gold standard) What you need to know about raw cheese, pastured poultry, and produce exemptions Where to start if you're ready to vote with your dollar and support regenerative food systems   You'll also hear actionable tips on:   Navigating state-specific food laws Understanding the difference between “grass-fed” and “pasture-raised” How to talk to your farmer—and what questions to ask How to legally join or form a food buying club, private membership association, or herdshare   This episode is packed with legal insight, food freedom advocacy, and practical strategies for any parent, health-seeker, or food rebel looking to build a better grocery cart—one local farm at a time.     Visit Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund Online: https://www.farmtoconsumer.org/   Join/Donate: https://members.farmtoconsumer.org/general/register_member_type.asp Sign-up for Action Alerts: https://www.farmtoconsumer.org/actionalerts/   Please give us a 5-star review, hit subscribe, and come back next week.

Herd shares are often considered to be a sneaky way to circumvent state laws prohibiting the sale of raw milk. But did you know that herd shares themselves are not legal in all 50 states? In addition, there is far more nuance to the endeavor than simply selling shares in your herd–both in terms of legalities and liabilities.Today, we're talking to Alexia Kulwiec, an attorney and Executive Director of the Farm to Consumer Legal Defense Fund. In this episode, Alexia discusses how herd shares work, the general nuances of state laws regarding herd shares, what a sufficient herd share contract should contain, and, most importantly, the steps you as the producer can take to protect yourself from legal issues. She also touches on the Raw Milk Nation interactive map found on the Farm to Consumer Legal Defense Fund's website and reveals why maps like this are far from the end-all-be-all when it comes to determining if raw milk sales or herd shares are legal in your state. Welcome to another episode in this ongoing series on homesteading. In this session I reached out to John Moody, the author of many books including “DIY Sourdough, The Elderberry Book” and the one we'll be focusing on today “The Frugal Homesteader.”  John is also the founder of Whole Life Services and Whole Life Buying Club and is the former executive director of the Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund. Like many of the people interviewed in this series, John decided to make a major transition in his lifestyle when he discovered that his diet was literally killing him with duodenal ulcers, seasonal allergies, and other health problems, so he and his growing family began to transition to real local foods and local food distribution and life on a homestead on 35 acres in rural Kentucky. Since then he has become a well-known speaker at conferences, events, and media including Mother Earth News, Wise Traditions, and others.  In this interview we focus on the many creative ideas that he covers in the “The Frugal Homesteader.” More than just a list of tips and tricks, John promotes a mindset of resourcefulness and problem solving that is based on long term thinking and looking at the bigger picture. We cover a lot of real examples from his own experiences in setting up a homestead for the first time and both successes and failures that lead to great solutions.  The best part is that listeners of this show will have the opportunity to win a free copy of John's book “The Frugal Homesteader.” Here's how it works, just leave a review of The Abundant Edge Podcast on iTunes and take a screenshot of your review. Send it to info@abundantedge.com along with the address where you'd like to receive your mail and I'll send the book to the first person I receive an email from. If you live outside of the US or Canada, you can just send the email and we'll send you a digital copy. If you don't win this time, don't worry, I'll be giving away a ton more books from new society publishers this season so stay tuned each week for your chance to win more books. If you've already left a review on iTunes you can share this episode on your prefered social media platform, take a screenshot and send an email just the same. These steps really help us to reach a larger audience with this information and message of actionable steps that anyone can take towards ecological regeneration so I really appreciate you all who've been helping me get the word out. Good day and welcome to Tractor Time podcast brought to you by Acres USA. I am your host, Ryan Slabaugh, and we are excited to bring you another episode – this one will be about advocacy, and how to get involved to make real change happen. Our guest today embodies that sentiment, Judith McGeary. Those who attend our conference every year should know her name, as she is a frequent speaker. But why we ask her to speak is most important – that she is the founder and leader of the Farm and Ranch Freedom Alliance, and represents about 1,000 ranchers and farmers in Texas who help advocate for government to better represent all of its constituents, not just the huge corporate farming interests. She’s also a rancher herself at the McGeary Family Farm a couple hours outside of Austin, Texas. How she found her way into this role is something we’ll discuss during the podcast, and her story is inspiring. It involves a career change, and some life-changing moments with farmers and politicians.  Not only does Judith lead FARFA, but she serves as the executive director of the Council for Healthy Food Systems and on the board of the Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund. And this year, she’s leading the Raise Your Voice Tour to learn more about what type of advocacy farmers and ranchers need the most. We’ll get into that, and more, in this 40-minute talk. You can learn more about FARFA at farmandranchfreedom.org, and their October conference. You can learn more about the Acres USA conference, where FARFA will be presenting, at www.acresusa.com.

Cod liver oil is one of the main foods that the Weston A. Price Foundation recommends for a healthy diet. It abounds in nutrients that are sadly lacking in our diets today. Cod liver oil provides fat-soluble vitamins A and D, which Dr. Price found present in the diet of traditional people groups in amounts ten times higher than those in "modernized" diets! Unfortunately, in recent years, there has been some controversy around the subject of fermented cod liver oil, which has caused some concern about its safety and health benefits. In today's episode, Sally Fallon Morell, the head of the Weston A. Price Foundation, dispels the confusion and answers the questions that have been posed about it. She explains the value of cod liver oil in detail. She describes the results Dr. Price saw when he introduced it into American diets. She goes through the cod liver oil extraction process, how fermentation allows us to get oils without compromising the nutrient content of the livers, and more.  Most importantly she addresses head-on questions of rancidity and the motivation of those who have leveled accusations against a specific cod liver oil company and the Weston A. Price Foundation itself. In the end, you will gain clarity on the cod liver oil controversy and you will learn more about why cod liver oil is so critical for our health today. Like the version that initially passed the House, the bill allows the direct sale to consumers by producers of all foods without licensing and inspection except meat, meat products, and raw dairy products. According to USDA, federal law prohibits the unregulated sale of meat and meat products. Under the Food Freedom Act, producers can sell up to 1,000 poultry annually of their own raising without state regulation. As for raw dairy products, they can already be distributed legally through herd share agreements without state regulation. A provision in the original bill allowing for the sale of raw milk and raw milk products was removed by the House committee that initially heard HB 1433 in February.

Kaayla Daniel, also known as the Naughty Nutritionist, talks to me this week about how to recover from soy. Yes, I said recover, because soy is not a health food, but damages our health in many ways. We’re also going to talk about her new book about bone broths called Nourishing Broth, on which she is collaborating with Sally Fallon Morell. Transcript Click here to view the full transcript for #39 Recovering from Soy with Kaayla Daniel. Soy is not a health food. It should be avoided completely or eaten only on rare occasions and in fermented forms. The soybean is now being linked to breast cancer, thyroid disease, menstrual and fertility issues, as well as severe allergies, compromised immunity and brain damage. SOY DANGERS SUMMARIZED High levels of phytic acid in soy reduce assimilation of calcium, magnesium, copper, iron and zinc. Phytic acid in soy is not neutralized by ordinary preparation methods such as soaking, sprouting and long, slow cooking. High phytate diets have caused growth problems in children. Trypsin inhibitors in soy interfere with protein digestion and may cause pancreatic disorders. In test animals, soy containing trypsin inhibitors caused stunted growth. Soy phytoestrogens disrupt endocrine function and have the potential to cause infertility and to promote breast cancer in women. Soy phytoestrogens are potent antithyroid agents that cause hypothyroidism and may cause thyroid cancer. In infants, consumption of soy formula has been linked to autoimmune thyroid disease. Vitamin B12 analogs in soy are not absorbed and actually increase the body’s requirement for B12. Soy foods increase the body’s requirement for vitamin D. Soy infant formula can cause lifelong allergies, autoimmune thyroid disease, asthma, and attention deficit disorder. Fragile proteins are deformed during high temperature processing to make soy protein isolate and textured vegetable protein, making them very difficult to digest. Processing of soy protein results in the formation of toxic lysinoalanine and highly carcinogenic nitrosamines. Free glutamic acid or MSG, a potent neurotoxin, is formed during soy food processing and additional amounts are added to many soy foods. Soy foods contain high levels of aluminum that is toxic to the nervous system and the kidneys. Soy HEALTH PROBLEMS SUMMARIZED Thyroid problems: including weight gain, lethargy, depression, fatigue, hair loss, and loss of libido Premature puberty Weight gain Estrogen Dominance Syndrome Developmental delays and problems in babies, children, and adolescents Asthma Causes and exacerbates endometriosis Cancer Brain damage, reducing production of new brain cells Dementia Reproductive disorders Reduced Fertility Kidney stones Weakened immune system Severe food allergies Man boobs and reduced sex drive in men About Kaayla Daniel Kaayla T. The Whole Soy Story is a groundbreaking expose that tells the truth about soy that scientists know but that the soy industry has tried to suppress. Soy is not a health food, does not prevent disease and has not even been proven safe. Epidemiological, clinical and laboratory studies link soy to malnutrition, digestive problems, thyroid dysfunction, Are toxic metals causing your fatigue and health issues? Jason Abbott and Jeff Schlaf have an in-studio conversation with Jessica Hudson. In Episode 4 we focus on modern food in our lives. We cover our thoughts about why the 4 A’s (Allergies, Asthma, ADHD, and Autism) are on the rise, a little talk about the industrial food supply, some Monsanto bitching, and how Jessica moved her family to the country to give her highly allergenic children natural nutritional food. She operates Sweet Peas Farm in Williamston, MI and has a fight on her hands with the local township regarding her farm. This has been by far the most popular episode. Pete Kennedy, Esq., President of the Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund is our guest tonight. We will be discussing the government war against raw milk,  and  the FDA SWAT-style raids with complete lack of legal due process. Can the FDA seize and destroy dairy products without a scintilla of evidence that the products are contaminated or defective. The government thinks that it can, and it is doing it on a regular basis. Examples of places that have been raided include Morningland Dairy, Rawsome Foods, and Rainbow Acres Farm. Please call the show with your questions or comments: 310-807-5158 or 877-878-1431

Carolyn Biggerstaff is a volunteer chapter leader for the Houston-Galveston chapter of the Weston A. Price Foundation, a nonprofit charity founded in 1999 to promote education about health and nutrition based on the research of Dr. Weston A. Price. I have been a chapter leader for about three years but have been studying nutrition as it applies to health for over thirty years, buying organic foods and eating whole foods long before it became popular. I am a volunteer educator, not a health professional. I was a senior financial analyst for a NASA contractor before my retirement in 2011 at the end of the Space Shuttle Program. I have attended many conferences and seminars and am always reading and researching about health and nutrition. In addition to membership in the Weston A. Price Foundation, I am a member of the Price Pottenger Nutrition Foundation, the Farm and Ranch Freedom Alliance, and the Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund.
