If you're a follower of fashion, you've surely felt the influence of sports on the industry steadily increase over the past several years. This week, Alyssa is joined by Madeline Hill, author of the Impersonal Foul newsletter and co-host of The Sports Gossip Show podcast, to discuss the flourishing relationship between fashion and sport, and how they sit at the intersection of many pop culture interests. Tune in to hear Madeline's lore as a teen model and a key player on Fashion Twitter, as well as her insights on how celebrity courtside culture, Instagram mood boards, and athlete off-duty style have brought sports to a wider audience; what The Cut launching a sports vertical and CR Fashion Book announcing a mysterious sports venture for 2025 signal for fashion media; why so many brands have locked into tennis culture, even before the release of Challengers; how F1 has become a tentpole event akin to Coachella or Art Basel for fashion and beauty brands, and what its 10-year deal with LVMH could bring; what to expect from Lewis Hamilton co-hosting the Met Gala in 2025 with LeBron James as an honorary chair; the extremely chic LVMH Olympics sponsorship; how TikTok is driving sports-heavy fashion trends like tenniscore, blokecore/blokette, motorcore, golfcore, and balletcore across the globe (and onto the runways); the evolution of athletes as influencers and the types of brands getting into athlete sponsorships; the impact of a new era of WAGS and athletes in public relationships exemplified by Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce, as well as fashion influencers like Alix Earle, Morgan Riddle, and Paige Lorenze bringing a new female viewership to sports; and what opportunities the fashion and beauty industries can glean from this rapidly growing audience of sports fans. Coming through with some thoughts on the intersection of friendship and ambition, covered wagon core (not to be confused with cottagecore!), and ~summer movies~.Following up on our Wilder conversation, we'd like to discuss covered wagon core. See Kim K.'s CR Fashion Book spread “The Pioneer Woman,” Rudy Jude, Salter House, and making jam. Re: actual covered wagons, Conestoga does a luxe wagon and a bar wagon, both, and Pioneer Woman has a roundup of campgrounds with covered wagons.Rainesford Stauffer's “We Should Be Ambitious About Our Friendships” for Elle sparked our convo about friendship ambition—she's also the author of An Ordinary Age: Finding Your Way in a World That Expects Exceptional and the new All the Gold Stars: Reimagining Ambition and the Ways We Strive. We love this tweet about friendship discussion agendas. As for books, this topic calls to mind Courtney Martin's The New Better Off, Kayleen Schaefer's Text Me When You Get Home, Aminatou Sow and Ann Friedman's Big Friendship, and Hua Hsu's Stay True. On our TBR list: Sheila Liming's Hanging Out: The Radical Power of Killing Time. (In the meantime: “The Case for Hanging Out” by Dan Kois for Slate and The Ezra Klein Show episode "The ‘Quiet Catastrophe' Brewing in Our Social Lives.") Bring on the summer movies! Obsessed with Past Lives, itching to see Theater Camp, Joy Ride, Problemista (see also: I Want to Be a Vase by Julio Torres), Red, White, & Royal Blue, Challengers, and, of course, Barbie (all the prophecies, including Margot Robbie in Vogue and Greta Gerwig in Gentlewoman, whet the appetite).Do you have easy, low-pressure ways to keep up with friends? Georgia Rhodes is a final-year student with already a lot of big fashion magazines on her resume including Marie Claire, Glamour, Elle, Harpers Bazaar, CR Fashion Book. I met Georgia in 2020 as she is one of the students of my online course Break into the fashion industry + The Fashion Writer Accelerator and in the past 3 years, she has achieved so much. I am really proud of her and happy to have been part of her professional journey and excited to share this interview with her to know where she is today. After an experience with a fashion marketing internship, she realized that writing was what she preferred doing.  She felt the pressure of getting an internship for her placement year especially when she realized that applying to fashion is different from applying to any other job. It was a nerve-wracking experience as her uni didn't really guide her on how to approach practically the job search process. She then stumbled upon the course Break into the fashion industry and after being encouraged by her grandparents to invest in her career, she enrolled and finally started seeing the first results. Her first experience with a magazine was at Marie Claire. She was one of the students to get the internship at Marie Claire in partnership with us exclusive for students of our academy. She then went up from there landing one internship after another at other major publications including Glamour, Elle, CR Fashion Book, Harpers Bazaar…Today, together with writing her dissertation, she is working as a freelance for the luxury online retailer Farfetch as Content Writer as well as writing for CR Fashion Book. In this episode we chatted everything about: how she realized that fashion was made for her and why ended up studying fashion marketinghow she understood she prefers writing over marketingfears and doubts about getting the first internshiphow she managed unpaid internshipshow she landed her first internship at Marie Clairethe strategy she used to land multiple internships at Glamour, Elle, Cr Fashion Book without living in a fashion capitalhow she stays organized to manage her fashion jobs remotelyhow she juggles studying with her current role at Farfetch and CR Fashion Bookthe difference between writing for magazines and being the Content Writer for Farfetchthe tools she uses in her joband her advice to land a job in fashionExplore the courses Georgia enrolled in:Break into the fashion industry courseThe Fashion Writer Accelerator CourseVisit our website for more career advice: www.glamobserver.com Follow us on Instagram for daily updates: @glamobserver

Welcome back to the final instalment of Changemakers. Today's episode is another live one, recorded last year September at the Lone Design Club pop up store on London's Regent Street. We often ask the question, “can fashion ever be truly sustainable?” According to BBC futures, more of us now understand that the fashion industry accounts for about 10% of global carbon emissions, and nearly 20% of wastewater. And while the environmental impact of flying is now well known, fashion uses more energy than both aviation and shipping combined.” LDC was founded in 2018 and signals the start of a critical shift towards more responsible patterns of consumption in the fashion industry and beyond. Aligning our spending to our values has never been more important. The ability to unite innovators and creators championing environmental and social sustainability in this space is a testament to the LDC community's hard work and purpose-driven mission. Describing themselves as the antidote to fast fashion, Lone Design Club was founded as the result of emerging international fashion + lifestyle brands uniting with like-minded businesses in rising up, taking control and shaping the future of retail. Today's guest is Shanna Bent, the Founder and Designer of conscious fashion brand Maison Bent with a key mission of championing diversity. An alumna of Central Saint Martins and London College of Fashion, she strengthened her product development skills at Roland Mouret and PR knowledge at Agent Provocateur before becoming Branding Coordinator at St. Pancras Chambers Collections. Having launched Maison Bent in 2020, she has since been quoted in Harper's Bazaar, Marie Claire, CR Fashion Book, Vogue Italia and more.Transcripts for this episode will be available on www.sustainablyinfluenced.com soon. On today's episode of biased, superstar stylist Ronnie Hart unpacks all things styling for you. Ronnie walks us through his career as a stylist and gives us all the tea on what it's taken to get to where he is. From starting out at CR Fashion Book with Carine Roitfeld to styling music videos for Olivia Rodrigo and Troye Sivan and working with Brazilian popstar Anitta and emerging designer Saint Sintra, he's done it all! The scope of his work includes runway, editorial, and celebrity styling, so he graciously explains the differences between all of these and which one he tends to enjoy the most. Ronnie also discusses the importance of having a signature style and how he balances this with clients, plus, he makes a solid argument as to why it's still important to intern/assist and "cut your teeth" before branching out on your own (which I wholeheartedly agree with). CR Fashion Book president Vladimir Restoin Roitfeld doesn't usually go the easy route. In the spring, as the pandemic threatened to make this a bye year for the company's fashion show, he pitched another event organizer threatened by the pandemic (amfAR, a non-profit supporting HIV/AIDS research and prevention) on collaborating on a fully digital show. "We worked on it for about a month and a half. It was non-stop," Restoin Roitfeld said on the Glossy Podcast. "Everybody agreed to do a little runway very safely from their own house[s] or apartments, and to wear whatever they wanted to wear from their closet." Another feat in the face of serious inconvenience: launching a magazine in China. "It's not an easy place to launch a publication, with the political difficulties or censorship that you have to also face," Restoin Roitfeld said.

Tired of always fighting some sort of injustice? Whether it’s ageism, sexism or fighting against the traditional (and totally unattainable) standards of female beauty, sometimes the only thing we want, is to relax and enjoy life. Angie Pontani shows you how to fall in love with yourself as you are, and enjoy food, family, and life as it comes. Halima Aden is a true change-maker. Her brave decision in 2016 to enter the Miss Minnesota USA Contest – wearing a burkini in the swimsuit round – was a zeitgeist-changing moment. The very first hijab-wearing Vogue cover star, in just over three years, the Somali-American has redefined ideas of beauty, bringing diversity and visibility of Muslim women onto fashion’s front pages. Veteran fashion editor Carine Roitfeld was an early champion, casting Aden on the cover of her CR Fashion Book and famously in Kanye West’s Yeezy show; although, as Aden explains, that ground-breaking runway moment almost didn’t happen… See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

This internationally renowned fashion model has teamed up with Women’s Running Magazine to found Project Start, a collaborative effort to encourage and inspire women to begin their own running journey. She has also launched a size inclusive clothing line for women, Day-Won. While she is termed a “plus -size” model, Huffine is at the helm of models pushing to expand boundaries for curvy models and to eliminate the label “plus” from the fashion vernacular. Candice is a runner and ran the 2017 NYC Marathon. Today’s Guest Candice Huffine is an internationally renowned fashion model. She became the first plus-size woman to be featured in the Pirelli Calendar, a UK Glamour trade calendar. Her A-list work includes being featured in publications such as CR Fashion Book, Italian Vogue (cover), Vogue, W, V Magazine, i-D and Glamour. She has also recently launched a clothing line for the full size range of active women called Day/Won. What you will learn about: How she is living the dream she had as a little girl, despite the fact that she doesn’t have the typical model body type/size. How being slotted into a role as a plus-model, at age 15, allowed her to grow into being a woman with all the curves of a normal woman, and being positive with her body as it is. It was the impetus to grow into a role as a spokesperson for body acceptance. How the body positivity acceptance move is allowing people to feel they are represented. And how it is becoming more acceptable to let our bodies settle where they are meant to be rather than endlessly trying to lose weight to fit into some pre-conceived mold. How she started running in 2015 when her husband dared her to do a half marathon as a part of their annual discussion of their goals for the next year. She first viewed it as just an impossible and unfair dare, but he was so passionate about it she stopped and listened to his reasons. She was inspired by the positive changes in his life when he first took up running, so something in the dare caught her interest. Her first half marathon (NYC half in 2016) was such a learning experience, as she had never trained more than 8 miles and didn’t know what at all to expect. So she psyched herself completely out. But she then used it as a learning experience to move forward. She learned that not only is she susceptible to a dare, but how competitive she could be with herself. It also taught her how important it was to take time for herself to do things that balance you out, and running has been an outlet for that. It has given her time to be meditative and thoughtful. How she found that the running clothing that was available was so uncomfortable and she spent more time adjusting clothing that just didn’t fit her body properly so she spent a bunch of time tugging at things. She decided to found her own brand, Day/Won, launched in the fall of 2017, that made athletic clothing that really fits a woman’s curves and was inclusive across the entire range of sizes. How she used her own brand to stand for causes she felt were important. Inclusivity, sustainability, etc. From giving back to charities, supporting the LGBT community, using recycled materials, making things in the US, digital printing to avoid water waste, and making things to order to save on waste.   Inspirational Quotes: There is always someone listening, being self-deprecating can influence someone and you won’t even realize it. We have to break the cycle of the negative things we say to ourselves. If you commit yourself to a goal, other things you want in your life will fall into place. You have to know it is going to be a slow process but suddenly you start to see the progress you have made and how you have achieved the short term goals that make you proud of what you can accomplish. Run because of how it makes you feel, not how it makes you look. So many women of all sizes are out there doing incredible things, it was time we started dressing them. You stand at the sidelines of a race and see people of all ages, shapes, etc. and it is so inspiring. No one should feel on the outside, you should not have to change to fit in. Explaining and apologizing for our bodies is exhausting and frankly has nothing to do with the bigger picture.
