The 2023 Madrid Championship and the Northern California Classic went off this weekend, with some familiar names on top of the podium Karin Freyova and Lazar Dukic won in Madrid, while Sean Sweeney and Brittany Weiss won in NorCal. Each of them took home a pretty substantial prize purse. Both Dukic and Freyova won more in Madrid than they did in the CrossFit Games, which is impressive considering both athletes finished in the top 15 at the CrossFit Games. Weiss earned as much at NorCal as she did as part of the Fittest Team on Earth, CrossFit Invictus. Sean Sweeney won more at NorCal than BKG did at the CrossFit Games. “I've constantly learned from the people I'm around. … I feel like you learn so much from, not just coaches, but I think from training partners. And I think that in itself is so valuable compared to just training by yourself, following a program. … It might work for some people, but that doesn't work for me. I need to be around other people.” Multi-year CrossFit Games athlete and business owner Lauren Fisher joins the show to share her experience as a professional CrossFit athlete, competing with Annie Thorisdottir and CrossFit Reykjavik, and starting Grown Strong. Fisher grew up playing team sports and did her first CrossFit workout in 2008 after her brothers convinced her to train with a coach at a local gym to help with her basketball training. The intensity, competitiveness with herself and the time cap, and enjoyment left Fisher hooked. By 2012, Fisher qualified for the Northern California Regional — her first — and placed 12th overall. A year later, she competed at the CrossFit Games with team CrossFit Invictus, finishing seventh. Fisher went on to compete at the CrossFit Games six more years — four as an individual and three on a team. On today's episode, Fisher opens up about starting CrossFit and her evolution through the sport. She shares memories and wisdom gained competing and training alongside more experienced athletes as an individual, competing as a team member, and working with experienced coaches and athletes in the space to improve her training. Fisher also gets candid about the demands of having a social media presence and the challenges of balancing expectations from sponsors, growing her brand, and staying connected to her fans and community. Tune in to find out how Fisher and two-time Fittest Woman on Earth Annie Thorisdottir connected about becoming teammates for the 2022 CrossFit Games, how her business Grown Strong is designed to help women grow mentally and physically stronger, and how Fisher is gearing up for the 2023 season. Although she lives in San Diego, Fisher is currently training at Training Think Tank and will compete at the North America West Semifinal as an individual on May 25-28.

It may go against our natural tendencies, but failing is a crucial and necessary piece of the puzzle. When it comes to the process of coaching development, we must reembrace fear and failure. We will go nowhere if we prioritize acceptance and validation above growth. Kirsten Ahrendt, a Head Coach and Director of Coach Development at Crossfit Invictus, emphasizes that it is the responsibility of the leader to create an environment that fosters this type of growth - one where people are celebrated when they admit their faults and supported in the reiteration and problem-solving process. Kirsten is a coach and creative. Previously, she was a professional athlete (soccer and rugby), member of the U.S. 7's Rugby team, graphic designer, business owner, geologist and a Cutco saleswoman. Today we are back talking with C.J. Martin, founder, and owner of Crossfit Invictus, one of the most premier Crossfit gyms out there and probably one of the largest as well. They are the most recognized Crossfit gym, based out of San Diego, and they also have online courses and trainings. For the last 11 consecutive years, they have had a presence at the Crossfit Games - the most elite of the elite of Crossfit athletes - with a team competing. A lot of folks know about Invictus, but C.J.. says there’s never been a focus on the brand, as his goal is to get to the core of the wants and needs of the people to make them better people. We talk about how he managed to build such a successful brand, and how his gym is doing very well while others have struggled. Also, we discuss the mindset traits he instills into his members which is very similar to the attributes that entrepreneurs have, and are qualities that can empower anyone. Listen in, as C.J. gets vulnerable talking about how the business almost went under, and how he persevered by challenging himself. And when you’re done, be sure to check out our shows with Marshall Wayne and Sunny Lenarduzzi on how to build a world-class brand that stands out. “I just realized that my lifelong impact was not going to be there. I wasn’t sure that I wanted it written on my tombstone - ‘Successfully defended lots of Fortune 500 companies’” - C.J. Martin Some Topics We Discussed Include: How to install discipline in your life (and in the lives of others) How Crossfit establishes mental toughness and stability The real meaning behind Invictus Why C.J. jumped out of a moving bus (and why that ended up being a good thing) Questions C.J. asks in the beginning when members sign up to put them on the right training path How his gym stands out from most others and how this benefits his members How C.J. was able to self fund a startup business and quit working his full-time job How being uncomfortable helps you move ahead, both at the gym and in life in general Establishing priorities and values that help establish your work/life balance The turning point that almost caused Crossfit Invictus to fail, and how C.J. was able to forge ahead And much, much more! This week, we went over to CrossFit Invictus in downtown San Diego to meet up with some of the very best athletes in the world. This week’s six-for-one special includes insights from four Games competitors and two Invictus coaches about what it takes to go from great to the greatest. In our first segment, we talk to training partners Garret Fisher and Holden Rethwill about how their workout styles compliment each other, how they train for such an unpredictable athletic event, and how to know when it’s truly time to give their bodies a rest. Next up, we talk to weightlifters and Games competitors Maddy Myers and Lauren Fisher about the challenges they face as dual-discipline athletes, how they’ll decide when it’s time to specialize, and what it’s like to enter this field as new athletes––only to discover you’re the best in the world. We round the conversation out with the coaches who got them this far, CJ Martin and Tino Marini. CJ’s trained over 40 individual athletes to Games, and Tino’s coached alongside him since 2012.
