In a stark pivot, Seattle City Councilmember Rob Saka introduced a resolution formally distancing the city from its prior embrace of the "defund the police" movement, effectively acknowledging the failure of a progressive policy that left the city critically undermanned in law enforcement. Once praised by activists, the initiative now stands widely condemned for its catastrophic impact on public safety, recruitment, and community trust. Seattle currently has only 913 officers for a population of 755,000—far below FBI recommendations and worse than even Portland. Despite political spin emphasizing diversity and accountability, the reality is grim: small businesses are closing, public safety is collapsing, and crime is thriving. The resolution signals a rhetorical shift, but the damage—driven by progressive ideology and weak leadership—has already deeply eroded law and order in the city. True recovery will require more than lip service; it demands a return to fiscal conservatism and traditional values that prioritize safety over slogans.

On its way out the door, the Biden administration provided a number of exit gifts for its allies amongst left-wing groups: feminists and abortion-rights activists received a legally toothless declaration that the Equal Rights Amendment, which had a ratification deadline that expired no later than 1982, was validly ratified; Native American activists and the extreme-left saw American Indian Movement radical Leonard Peltier, convicted of involvement in the deaths of two FBI agents, released from prison; and Big Philanthropy saw longtime liberal megadonor George Soros honored with a Presidential Medal of Freedom. But defund-the-police activists got another, very substantive exit-row gift from Biden's government that wasn't nearly as prominent: A proposed “consent decree” between the federal government and the Louisville Police Department strictly controlling how the Louisville PD will operate going forward. When thieves made off with Darcie Bell's rented U-Haul truck, the San Francisco woman put out a call for help on X: “If you see a 26 foot uhaul truck with the Arizona plate AL50003- would you let me know because it had like everything I own on it.” The post went viral, but not for the reason she hoped for. Bell spent years posting left-wing “Defund the police” views — and users across the site blasted and mocked the activist. “Anti Police activist begs the police to help,” jeered the X account Bay State of Mind, which comments on San Francisco Bay Area politics. Tom Wolf, an addiction recovery advocate who has nearly 30,000 followers, posted a screenshot of a previous post in which Bell blasts the San Francisco police, alongside a screenshot of her recent plea. “Shot. Chaser,” the caption reads.

Then, Erik auditions to play “Baby Hating Airline Passenger” in a dramatic reenactment of a crying-filled Southwest flight. Next, Jason “Mayhem” Miller reads the news including stories about the detainment of an Ivy League student as a ‘person of interest' in then UnitedHealthcare CEO shooting, Jay-Z being accused of raping a 13-year-old girl in 2000 along with Sean ‘Diddy' Combs, a man scaling a 19-story building to save his bedridden mother, and a ‘Defund the Police' activist going viral after begging for help when everything she owned was stolen in San Francisco. The public debate over policing has made more of us more familiar with ideas like defunding or abolishing the police, but these ideas are still often dismissed as infeasible. In this episode, host Kai Wright is joined by three experts who have seen communities sustain and improve public safety absent of law enforcement.First, we meet Dennis Flores, a Nuyorican multimedia artist, activist and educator born and raised in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. He is the co-founder of El Grito de Sunset Park, a grassroots community-based organization that advocates around issues of discriminatory policing and housing rights. Flores is also the lead organizer of the Sunset Park Puerto Rican Day Parade, which, entering its third year, has created a celebration of Puerto Rican culture safe from police harassment. Flores shares how own experience with our justice system led him to find alternatives to police presence to keep his community safe.Next, Kai is joined by Philip V. McHarris, an assistant professor in the Department of Black Studies and Frederick Douglas Institute at the University of Rochester, and author of the book, “Beyond Policing.” McHarris breaks down the history of our police system and how learning about the white supremacist origins of law enforcement can help us discover better alternatives. Then Danielle Sered, executive director of the award-winning organization Common Justice, talks about developing and advancing solutions to violence that meet the needs of those harmed and foster racial equity without relying on incarceration. Sered is the author of “Until We Reckon: Violence, Mass Incarceration, and a Road to Repair” and her organization is at the forefront of alternatives to prison. She shares her takeaways from working on the frontlines — both with victims and perpetrators.Companion Listening: “People Feel Unsafe–and It's More Than Crime” (March 14, 2022)The social fabric is torn. The Seattle City Council voted 6-1 Tuesday afternoon to approve a proposal thatincreases hiring bonuses for lateral police officers to $50,000. Council president Sara Nelson, who sponsored the increase, said the city's current recruitment efforts were not bringing in enough qualified applicants. “If we want to have a safer city, it is our duty to adequately staff the police department,"Nelson said at Tuesday's meeting. The city estimates the Seattle Police Department (SPD) is short between 300 to 350 officers. The current hiring incentive for lateral transfer officers is $30,000, while entry-level officers can receive $7,500.

Moral relativism is one of the primary underlying causal factors for the U.S. migrant crisis and the proliferation of the defund the police propaganda. When people understand morality as relative, they will think and behave in ways that perpetrate mixed ideologies. For example, they will engage in behaviors that initiate physical harm to others thinking that they are doing the right thing morally. People whose understanding of morality is relative will also refuse to do correct moral behaviors in fear of loss of comfort and other rewards. People will think that following orders from a trusted authority is moral when it is not. The MC and DTP are classic examples of symptoms of morally relative thinking and behaviors.

The Seattle Police Officers Guild (SPOG) had already approved the deal, as did the Seattle Mayor's Office, and calls for a 1.3% wage increase in 2021, a 6.4% increase in 2022, and a 15.3% increase in 2023. The officers will be paid in a one-time lump sum, but a City Council central staff document also says the cost is more than anticipated and will add to the already $230 million budget deficit. It does not cover 2024 and beyond. The vote was 8-1, with only Councilmember Tammy Morales opposing the raises.
