To many of us here in Sonoma County, images of these fires have brought back many heart-breaking reminders of what we went through. These are hard memories. But they come with valuable and hard-earned lessons, which many of our local leaders, including the two we have with us today, have been asked to share with our counterparts in Southern California. We thought it would be timely to reflect on these lessons and remind our listeners – including those who are perhaps new to Sonoma County – what we can and should be doing to prepare for the next wildfire. Joining us is Jeff DuVall, director of the Sonoma County Department of Emergency Management and Pamela Van Halsema, Communications Program Specialist for Sonoma Water but, is joining us in her capacity as a survivor of the 2017 fire and a leader involved in the rebuilding of Santa Rosa's Coffey Park Neighborhood.

Leading business schools and best-selling leadership authors seldom compare the skills required of for-profit CEOs and non-profit fire chiefs. Yet, the two professions share a lot in common. Indeed, battling blazes is excellent preparation for dousing the many firestorms business owners, executives, and entrepreneurs face. This week's guest, Clive Savacool, devoted 25 years as a Northern California firefighter before retiring his chief's helmet and stepping into the boots of a full-time startup CEO. Clive is the founder and CEO of LogRX, which created and sells an advanced mobile app designed to help firefighters, paramedics, law enforcement personnel, and others who administer and are legally bound to keep track of controlled substances in their work. As a firefighter, Clive fought numerous structure fires and one of the largest wildfires in California history. As a startup CEO, he faced the challenge of bootstrapping a company with an untested app and zero outside investment. Both entailed risk and required courage. How does a fire chief's experience in life-or-death decisions benefit a CEO facing a corporate crisis? In this episode, Clive shares his unique perspective and strategies for staying cool-headed under extreme stress. Monday Morning Radio is hosted by the father-son duo of Dean and Maxwell Rotbart. Dean's book, Dedication and Service, showcasing the Genesee, Colorado, fire department, can be purchased in a digital version here or paperback from Amazon. In fact, the Berkeley hippies—now boomer professors—are afraid of this illiberal radical left that seems to want to cancel, if not kill them, for having divergent views,” says Mr. Shapiro. We discuss the limits of free speech, when it veers into misconduct or harassment, and how to balance the 1st amendment with Title VI and other civil rights laws—especially on college campuses.“A lot of what's been going on in the last couple of months is not even speech to begin with. You do not escape criminal liability for, say, public urination on a building, just because you're saying, ‘I'm being expressive in showing my displeasure for the organization that inhabits that building,' or tearing down posters off private property because ‘I'm expressing my disdain for what those posters are saying.' No,” says Mr. Shapiro. He argues that it is not the laws—not criminal, civil, federal, or state—nor is it the university policies at most places that are to blame for what we're seeing today. Rather, it is their uneven enforcement.“MIT famously, even after admitting that some students violated their rules on blocking access to buildings, then said, ‘Oh, we're not going to punish those students, because a lot of them are foreign and they're here on student visas.' And it turns out, if you punish them for these kinds of violations, they lose their visas and they have to leave the country. And so, in effect, MIT has created a system where foreign students can harass and intimidate, but American students can't,” says Mr. Shapiro.Views expressed in this video are opinions of the host and the guest, and do not necessarily reflect the views of The Epoch Times.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Nuclear winter - Reviewing the evidence, the complexities, and my conclusions, published by Michael Hinge on August 25, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Nuclear winter is a topic that many have heard about, but where significant confusion can occur. I certainly knew little about the topic beyond the superficial prior to working on nuclear issues, and getting up to speed with the recent research is not trivial. Even then there are very large uncertainties around the topic, and different teams have come to different conclusions, which are unlikely to be resolved soon. However, this does not mean that we cannot draw some conclusions on nuclear winter. I worry that the fact there are still uncertainties has been taken to the extreme that nuclear winters are impossible, which I do not believe can be supported. Instead, I would suggest the balance of evidence suggests there is a very serious risk a large nuclear exchange could lead to catastrophic climate impacts. Given that the potential mortality of these winters could exceed the direct deaths, the evidence is worth discussing in detail, especially as it seems that we could prepare and respond. This is a controversial and complex topic, and I hope I have done it justice with my overview. Throughout this article I should however stress that these words are my own, along with any mistakes. Headline results, for those short on time This is a very long post, and for those short on time the thrust of my argument is summarized here. I've also included the relevant section(s) in the post that back up each point for those who wish to check my working on a specific piece of analysis. Firestorms can inject soot effectively into the stratosphere via their intense plumes. Once there, soot could persist for years, disrupting the climate (see "The case for concern: Firestorms, plumes and soot"). Not every nuclear detonation would create a firestorm, but large nuclear detonations over dense cities have a high risk of causing them (see "The case for concern: Firestorms, plumes and soot"). Not every weapon in arsenals will be used, and not all will hit cities. However, exchanges between Russia and NATO have the potential to result in hundreds or thousands of individual detonations over cities. This has the potential to result in a large enough soot injection that catastrophic cooling could occur (see "Complexities and Disagreements: Point one"). The impacts of soot injections on the climate are nonlinear, and even if the highest thresholds in the literature are not met there still could be serious cooling. My personal estimates are that around 20-50 Tg of soot could be emitted in the event of a full-scale exchange between Russia and NATO with extensive targeting of cities. This is less than the upper threshold of 150 Tg from other sources, however that would still cause catastrophic crop losses without an immediate and effective response (see "Synthesis"). There are disagreements between the teams on the dynamics of nuclear winters, which are complex. However, to date these disagreements center on a regional exchange of 100 weapons of 15 kt each, much smaller than Russian and NATO strategic weaponry. Some of the points raised in the debate are therefore far less relevant when looking at larger exchanges, where fuel loads would be higher, weapons are much more powerful and firestorms more likely (see "Complexities and Disagreements: The anatomy of the disagreements, followed by Synthesis"). This means that nuclear winter is not discredited as a concept, and is very relevant for the projected mortality of nuclear conflict. There are uncertainties, and more research is needed (and possibly underway), however it remains a clear threat for larger conflicts in particular (see "Synthesis"). Overall, although highly uncertain, I would expec...

In his letter, Peter tells us to not only expect trials in life, but to celebrate them! Thankfully, he also describes for us how this is possible for the believer, and he encourages us to use our inevitable suffering to become more like Jesus.

In a special edition of the RacingNews365.com F1 podcast, journalists Dieter Rencken and Michael Butterworth take a deep dive into the 2022 F1 season and the key issues that emerged from it.The first year of a new era of technical regulations saw F1 cars look vastly different in 2022 from those that had gone before. Did the new rules succeed in tightening up the field and producing closer racing?2022 was the first season where teams were audited under F1's budget cap, and with Red Bull having been found guilty of overspending, was their punishment a fair one? With F1 seeing record crowds throughout 2022, how do the sport's commercial prospects look? And having come into the role off the back of the controversial ending to the 2021 F1 season, how should Mohammed Ben Sulayem's first year as FIA President be evaluated? All this and more on this edition of the RacingNews365.com F1 podcast, with Part 2 to follow on December 26th!

Randall continues to share the gripping accounts from survivors of the 1871 firestorms around Lake Michigan – to ensure that we don't forget – because “That is the doom of Man…” Charles D. Robinson recalls: “Men, women and children, horses, oxen, cows, dogs, swine – everything that had life was seized with panic and ran without method to escape the impending destruction. The smoke was suffocating and blinding. The roar of the tempest deafening. The atmosphere scorching. Children were separated from their parents and trampled upon by the crazed beasts. Husbands and wives were calling wildly for each other and rushing in wild dismay, they knew not where…” Mixed with symbology, biblical quotes and imagery, we start to get a glimpse of the true potential cause… Kosmographia Ep080 The Randall Carlson Podcast with Brothers of the Serpent – Kyle and Russ, Normal Guy Mike, and GeocosmicREX admin Bradley, from 2/15/22. In this episode: Links to documentary and FIRE footage below...... I had to escape the Sonoma County CA firestorm of 2017. The city received MULTIPLE 911 calls at 9:30pm and chose NOT to order evacuation. 80 people died, 5,000 homes burned along with whole mobile home parks, Hotels, stores, and wineries. $5 Billion in damage. My neighbor came knocking at 3:30 in the morning, telling me we had to evacuate immediately. I looked out the door over her head, and it looked like the apocalypses as far as I could see all black and red skies in every direction. T he fire was 4 blocks away. The fire department was holding it at he nearest point to my house. In other locations the fire was traveling at 30 miles per hour and the fire department had to flee for their lives. I talk with J Kal Talk Show from the Stereo App. We go deep on mental health and how to take care of yourself as a content creator. We also discuss the wildfires of California. I have evacuated 4 times since 2017. In 2017 the fires were 4 blocks from my house. I escaped to an overpass and watched the world burn. A night I will never forget. We also discuss chemtrails. I know I promised a solo show on my experiences so far with this 53,000 hectare fire encircling the farm but, a few hours ago, it occurred to me there might be a way of framing the tale so that it is more useful or at least magically interesting to you. So with very little notice and coming off another podcast recording, Austin agreed to pull a chart together for Tasmania and we use an analysis of that as a frame for discussing my experiences. It’s not technical -how could it be, if I’m involved?- but for you astro nerds out there, the Aries and Libra ingress charts for Hobart, as well as the base chart we drew up for Tasmania, are all in the show notes, with Austin’s commentary. Victims of California's fires can apply for assistance, but President Trump had a warning for the state's residents. He wants to see a change in forest management. Scientists tell us the firestorms are are result of climate change--which the president still denies. Should cities still allow for building in firezones? Later, Warren talks to one Malibu resident about his firsthand experience in the Woolsey fire.
Sam shares the top 5 stories she thinks you should know to kick off your day, including a firestorm taking place in DC right now over Russia wanting to question US officials as well as St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter saying "NO!" to e-scooters.
Jill and Connor kick off this episode with a creature four stories long, the giganotosaurus! From there we head to apex predators, firestorms, and finally the bubonic PLAGUE! Death, destruction and hilarity ensue!
Episode 23: Today we are joined by Seth, new to the podcast but not to our gaming group. We talk about a few new and upcoming releases. Of course, we wander off topic as always inspite of Seth's attempts to keep us on target. Valentina attempts to trick Dr. Stein into revealing the Firestorm formula, but he refuses. The team brokers a deal with the Bratva to get into the gulag where Ray, Mick, and Stein are being held prisoner. Before they leave, Rip pulls Sara aside and tasks her with killing Stein, should they fail to rescue him, in order to prevent a potential future where an army of Firestorms have destroyed the world. Savage has Ray and Mick tortured in front of Stein to force him to talk. Obtaining the formula, Valentina discovers that Stein is the other half of Firestorm. The team arrives at the gulag just as Valentina enters a reactor to start absorbing energy from a new thermal core. Snart rescues Mick and Ray, but Valentina merges with Stein to create a Soviet Firestorm. Jefferson is able to reach Stein's consciousness and force the two to separate. Without Stein or a quantum splicer, Valentina cannot control the nuclear reaction inside of her and ultimately is destroyed. As the team moves into the time stream, they are attacked by Chronos, who forces them to crash land in Star City of 2046. Here, they are confronted by a green-hooded archer.

THIS WEEK'S PODCAST TRANSCRIPT:1906: Hotaling's Whiskey is spared by the Great Fire and Earthquake April 20th, 1906 The deliverance of Hotaling's Whiskey As of Friday the 20th, San Francisco was still on fire. The Great Earthquake had happened two days earlier, but the Fire (or fires) that devastated the city were still well underway. The eastern quarter of the city -- nearly five square miles -- would be almost completely destroyed. But after the smoke cleared, a few precious blocks would emerged unscathed. Among these survivors would be the two blocks bounded by Montgomery, Jackson, Battery and Washington Streets. Oceans of ink have been spilled in documenting the incredible individual heroism and unfathomable professional incompetence displayed in fighting those fires. One of the best books on the subject is "The Great Earthquake and Firestorms of 1906" by Philip Fradkin, from which I've swiped much of today's timecapsule. This is the story of a single building, but one of vital importance to the delicate Western palette: AP Hotaling & Co.’s warehouse at 451 Jackson Street -- the largest depository of whiskey on the West Coast. Day One: the first escape Hotaling's warehouse was threatened on the very first day of the fires, Wednesday, April 18th. This particular blaze was one of the many inspired by rampant and ill-advised dynamiting, in this case by an allegedly drunken John Bermingham, not coincidentally the president of the California Powder Works. Encouraged by the blast, the fire roared towards the whiskey-packed warehouse. Its cornices began to smoulder, but a quick-acting fireman bravely clambered to the top and hacked them off. This was Hotaling's first escape.
I think the best way to describe this one is 'Mashed' ;) It starts with guitars and ends with guitars - everything in the middle is.. well, you'll hear. There are some excellent remixes of some excellent tracks. The 303 in track eight gets me every time. The inspiration primarily came from the Kylie concert I attended just before Christmas last year. I chaperoned my 10 year old Niece and it was the first time she had been to a live performance. From the Bush to Melbourne and 15,000 people! She loved it. For me, it was one of the best I've ever seen. Love her or hate her, it is undeniable that she is an artist. Nearly 21 years into her career and she just keeps getting better.. I would like to send my thanks to Andrew Scott for his technical advice, I've learnt a lot. He has an excellent eye and you can check out some of his work here: http://sleight-ofhand.livejournal.com/ The inclusion of 'The Human League' was originally intended to be a statement about the situation in Gaza; another generation will now grow up obsessed with fighting. Since then so many things have happened.. I dedicate this to the residents of Israel and Palestine, may you find peace one day; the survivors of the Vietnam War who may now finally get some closure through the Trials and to all the people affected by the Firestorms in Victoria - to those who have lost everything, including family and loved ones - my thoughts are with you.
