In this episode of Alimentary! I am delighted to welcome Penny Sharkey (and yes we are related!) to discuss how Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) can be used either by itself or with other therapeutic tools in therapy to support mental health and wellbeing. Penny is a professional counsellor and psychotherapist, and a member of the Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (IACP). She holds a First-Class Honours Degree in Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy, a Degree in Social Studies, and a master's Certificate in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). Currently, she works in a private practice in Celbridge and Maynooth, in Co. Kildare. From an early age, Penny developed a curiosity in how the power of human connection and the resilience of the human spirit worked. This passion was sparked by witnessing a friend struggle with severe anxiety and depression and seeing how effective therapy was in transforming their life. That experience motivated her to help others navigate their own challenges and find healing. In her practice, she strives to create a warm, accepting, and honest environment where clients feel safe to explore their feelings. Her therapeutic approach is flexible and client-centered, emphasizing empathy and tailored interventions to meet each person's unique needs. She believes in the power of active listening, congruence, and guidance to help clients discover meaning, build resilience, and achieve personal growth. She primarily works with Person-Centred Therapy, Choice Theory/Reality Therapy, and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to support clients on their journey towards well-being. She said that it has been so fulfilling to work in supporting those who are seeking support, helping them find their own strength and clarity in times of distress. Welcome to Bittersweet Symphony, a podcast about the bitter, sweet and bittersweet memories and experiences of classical musicians during the pandemic. Hosted and produced by me, Cliodhna Ryan, a violinist, it's an intimate and heart-warming exploration of the human spirit. My guest in episode fourteen is Elaine Clark, violinist and co-leader of the National Symphony Orchestra in Ireland. Her bitter experience is the almost physical ache she felt due to the prolonged separation from her mother in Aberdeen. Her sweet was performing a live stream of Beethoven's String Quartet Op.131 on the stage of the National Concert Hall. On stage, at that moment, she felt “This is where I am meant to be!”. Her bittersweet was also the live streaming experience. While she loved playing and being back with her colleagues, the distance, the difficulty in communication, and the lack of an audience inhibited true, meaningful connection. Born in Aberdeen, Elaine studied with David Takeno at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, where she won several awards and prizes. After graduating with a First Class Honours Degree, she continued her studies with Viktor Liberman at the Utrecht Conservatory in the Netherlands. Since 1996, when she was appointed Co-Leader of the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, Elaine has made Dublin her home. She is a regular soloist with the NSO, most recently in performances of Bach Double Concerto and Deirdre Gribbens's Venus Blazing as well as performing as soloist in John Williams ‘Fiddler on the Roof' Suite in the presence of President Michael D, Higgins. She has also led many orchestras both home and abroad, including RTE Concert Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.' Elaine has a deep love of chamber music and has been able to nourish this by being a member of the Ficino Ensemble, Ficino Quartet and Clarion Horn Trio, as well as performing numerous freelance chamber music concerts. She has also travelled extensively with the contemporary music ensemble Concorde and performed numerous world premieres. She has given masterclasses at Royal Irish Academy of Music, University of Limerick and Cork School of Music and sits on the board of UCD Symphony Orchestra. Series 2 is here!!! Thanks to everyone for all your support and lovely messages for the first series. I have lots of new episodes coming in the next few weeks with guests such as Panti Bliss and Rory Cowan. But what better way to kick off the new run than with everyone's favourite no-nonsense, tough-talking TV judge Robert Rinder. Robert achieved a First Class Honours Degree in Politics and Modern History from the University of Manchester and was called to the bar at the tender age of 21. His TV career which followed has been a happy accident. Robert was writing crime drama scripts as a side hustle, when a fortuitous meeting with an ITV executive, led to him being cast as the judge on the UK version of the hit American series Judge Judy. Judge Rinder has of course gone on to become a huge hit and often averages 1 million viewers per episode, which for a daytime show is pretty brilliant. Robert has since appeared on Strictly, Who Do You Think You Are and had his own Friday night chat show on Channel 4. I met up with Robert a while back and we chatted about; his teenage crushes (all Scandinavian by the way!!!), what it’s like to be gay and Jewish, dealing with homophobia within the legal profession, why he has changed his mind about same-sex dancing partners on Strictly, his advice for those who are currently in the midst of the coming out process and lots of other things also!!! The Graham Arrowsmith 60th Birthday Episode Co-host of The Next 100 Days Podcast has just had his 60th Birthday. We recorded this special episode on the day. The original intention was for Kevin Appleby and his wife Ruth to join Graham at a getaway venue right next to the beautiful Menai Straits in Wales. Events conspired and so we recorded the podcast with Kevin still in Northumberland. Graham invited his family to join him to discuss their lives. We hope you enjoy this little bit of self indulgence, and laugh along with Graham and his family. Kevin Calls This The FIFTY TEN Episode! Very funny, I must say! And it didn't take long before it all went horribly long (hopefully not on the podcast)! http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/Take-Fifty-10.mp4 Any tips for Graham on being 60, beyond "Graham eat less", will be welcomed on our Facebook Group https://www.facebook.com/groups/thenext100days Graham was speaking from Telford House next to the Menai Straits. Here's some images. Graham holding the 60th Birthday card sent by Kevin Appleby Interview with Graham's Wife Dawn Graham and Dawn have been married for 34 years. http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/Dawn-Arrowsmith.mp4 SHOCK REVELATION - Graham loves Leeds United! Here is an image of Graham waiting to go into Elland Road for the first home game of the season against Nottingham Forest, which thanks to another corrupt referee finished in a 1-1 draw. As per, he got the kick off wrong, so they were there early! Hence the car park being empty - no jibes needed, thank you. Interview with eldest son Luke Arrowsmith Luke works for Claranet and discusses retailers struggles with digital transformation. http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/Luke-Arrowsmith.mp4 Interview with one and only daughter Sophie Arrowsmith Sophie works for High Net Worth clients as a family lawyer for Lupton Fawcett in Leeds. http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/Graham-Sophie-Arrowsmith.mp4 So, if you are thinking of parting company with your other half, then you can get in touch with Sophie at Lupton Fawcett. And 4 in every 10 marriages fail. Interview with youngest son Nathan Arrowsmith Nathan is married to a Brazilian called Luana. Her family has also joined us from Brazil at our event in Wales. Nathan is currently a Windows Engineer for UK Fast in Manchester. Kevin thought he sold double glazing for a living! Graham also announced Finely Fettled's 5 Year Anniversary. Just in case you know someone who is looking for High Net Worth data and a direct mail campaign to attract them - send them to Finely Fettled! http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/Graham-Nathan-Arrowsmith.mp4 Kevin was an only child. Graham talks to his brother. Interview with brother Malcolm Arrowsmith Malcolm Arrowsmith is Graham's elder brother. He was a teacher for 38 years. Both mainstream and special needs. He intends to travel to Uzbekistan in September 2019. He wants to follow the Silk Route by train and car. What a journey that'll be! http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/Graham-Malcolm-Arrowsmith.mp4 Interview with Sarah Daniels, my brother's step daughter Sarah is a teacher in Nottingham. She loves gigs. So does Kevin. He likes Kaiser Chiefs - Leeds fans. Sarah went to the Download Festival - a friendly well organised day. http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/Graham-ARrowsmith-Interviews-Sarah-Daniels.mp4 Don't tell her what I said about Tamworth, whatever you do! And finally, here's Weronika Niszczyk (Nish-chik) Weronika Niszczyk recently graduated from Bradford University. She came away with a First Class Honours Degree. Graham worked with her on her dissertation. He was so impressed with her he offered her some work experience. So for a few weeks, Weronika is project managing several things which needed to get done!
‘We are all delivering products and services in a noisy and busy marketplace so what is the reason someone will buy from you, what is your added value? Gavin is in conversation with Kelly Teasdale from ‘Market my Product’ Kelly is a Marketing Expert who uses her expertise and knowledge from the corporate world to teach entrepreneurs how to effectively market and grow a business. Kelly shares practical tips and advice about how you can begin to develop a marketing strategy that will work for your business, listen in to find out how. KEY TAKEAWAYS What really helps you grow a business are strategy, content and value. There are 4 common key mistakes: Shiny new toy syndrome – people look for the one ‘magic something’ that is going to make their business successful. Operating only at a tactical level- it’s the back to front way of marketing. No two marketing plans should look the same and an overview of the journey you are on is vital. The copy me syndrome – copying other businesses, you must communicate what is different about you and choose tactics that are right for your business, at this point because of where your target audience is. Content creation – business owners create content then do not use it. Using a content planning model enables you to repurpose content effectively. A marketing strategy is based on where you are, what you want to sell, who your target audience is, what your competitors are doing, where you want to get to, and how you are going to navigate to reach that point. A SWOT analysis can provide clarity when developing a marketing strategy. The strengths and weakness are internal to the business including elements such as resources and personal skill sets. Opportunities and threats are external to the business and include aspects such as competition in the marketplace. Creating a customer-centric business, revolving your business genuinely around your customer needs from product development onwards means the business is very close to its target audience. If you are serious about growth then staying close to your target audience is key. They are going to give you all the information you need to help develop and grow successfully. Successful businesses all share an understanding of key elements; content creation, the power of PR, digital marketing, analytics, customer centricity, creativity, strategy and operational planning. When you have a strategy in place and before you commence with any marketing list your key messages, it’s important that others know what you are doing and what your marketing message is. The minute you start making the right tactical choices everything changes and with a clear strategy the overwhelm of marketing disappears. BEST MOMENTS ‘In a crowded noisy world, people want something that speaks specifically to them’ ‘Lots of small businesses are passion led and with this sometimes comes tunnel vision’ ‘The smartest people win by facing the reality and then being strategic about how they get through the noisy marketplace to reach their goals’ ‘Where are you on that journey and what is right for your business tactically at that time?’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Kelly Teasdale Website Market My Product Website, 7 Marketing Superpowers Quiz ABOUT THE GUEST Kelly Teasdale Kelly is an award-winning global marketing expert, business growth coach and speaker. Nichola - or Nic as her friends call her - has such a long list of credentials and accomplishments that I simply can't share them all here. But just a sampling of her education and experience demonstrates her expertise: Graduated from Loughborough University with a First Class Honours Degree in Sports & Exercise Science Graduated from Leeds Metropolitan University with a post-graduate diploma in Dietetics Holds a Master's Degree in Health Science Published author in the Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics Her blog has also been voted as the UK's best health blog in 2015! Clearly, we're in good company. In this conversation, Nic and I discuss a wide variety of topics important to runners: How can athletes running with diabetes fuel appropriately while managing their disease? Why is being "calorie-aware" important but fundamentally different than counting calories? Does the ketogenic ("keto") diet work for runners? Is coconut water a good source of hydration for runners? Do detoxes work? Should athletes like runners take multivitamins? Use these principles to focus on big-picture principles and thrive!
