Send us a textWhat makes a composer tick? In this absorbing conversation with Dylan Glatthorn, we explore the unexpected creative influences that have shaped his musical identity. From a shy child with a toy piano to an accomplished composer for theater, film, and television, Dylan's journey reveals how early artistic experiences can profoundly shape a creative career.Dylan takes us back to his childhood in Tampa Bay, where The Beatles served as the "connecting glue" between his parents' different musical tastes – especially meaningful after their divorce. This early exposure to melodic innovation established his appreciation for music that balances emotional vulnerability with technical precision, a hallmark of his own compositional approach. The conversation delves into the nuanced storytelling of Sondheim's "Assassins," which captivated Dylan with its ability to navigate morally complex territory while balancing serious themes with sharp comedy. Similarly, Laura Marling's album "Once I Was an Eagle" demonstrates the power of music that is "both tender and subtle but also big and heartbreakingly forward" – a quality Dylan strives for in his own work. When discussing Spielberg's "Jurassic Park," Dylan analyzes how John Williams' score enhances the story without overpowering it, while Paul Thomas Anderson's "There Will Be Blood" showcases Johnny Greenwood's experimental approach to film music. These contrasting influences reflect Dylan's versatility as a composer who can move between traditional melodic structures and more innovative techniques.Throughout our conversation, Dylan articulates a creative philosophy centered on authenticity: "Keep writing what you like, not what you think other people will like." This principle guides his current project "The Pelican," a musical about a coastal Florida town facing complete destruction from an approaching hurricane. Whether you're a fellow creator or simply curious about the artistic process, this episode offers valuable insights into how diverse influences coalesce into a unique creative voice.Check Out Dylan's WorkFollow My Pop Five: @mypopfive on all platforms We'll see you next time.

“I have a competition in me. I want no one else to succeed. I hate most people.”Talking About Paul Thomas Anderson's 2007 film There Will Be Blood with our guest, filmmaker Uwe BollThere are many films filmmaker Uwe Boll could've picked to discuss with us on the show, but the most recent film that's affected him as much as some of his all-time favorites is Paul Thomas Anderson's 2007 film There Will Be Blood. Before we dig into the film, we talk a bit about Boll's career. Sure, he's made some cinematic video game adaptations that weren't received well by critics, but he's also made some films that satirize modern society, whether in a comedic vein like Postal or a more serious tone like his Rampage films. There's a change in society as to how people react to their buttons being pushed. That's certainly reflected in films of the time. Who knows – some of that may come from the rise of the streaming services. Regardless, it all makes for a fascinating discussion. From there, we jump into Anderson's film. Boll has had some fairly unlikeable protagonists in his films, so we use that as a starting point with Daniel Plainview, the greedy, hateful protagonist of this film. Why is he still likable in some capacity? The film explores greed, capitalism, religion, family, and more. Everything stands out with the film as exemplary, from the performances (Daniel Day-Lewis and Paul Dano are in top form) to Johnny Greenwood's score to Robert Elswit's cinematography. We look at the complex story and ponder that the film got made in the first place. A film that doesn't have dialogue until nearly 15 minutes have passed? How did Anderson sneak it past the studio heads? It's a wonderful conversation with an insightful filmmaker. Was Arthur Moorhead the greatest jazz buyer that ever worked at Tower Records? Stan Goman believes that is the case. Growing up in Arizona, Arthur became a proficient trombone player and obsessed with jazz, movie soundtracks and orchestral music. By his own admission he was almost completely ignorant of pop music, except The Beatles. As a young teenager, his weekends consisted of hopping on a bus with a friend and making the rounds of Arizona record storeslooking for records. Eventually he worked for a local record store called Recordland in Phoenix and Mesa, Arizona. In 1975 Arthur moved to San Francisco to pursue a career as a professional trombone player, as opportunities in Phoenix were few & far between. Needing a day job, he entered Tower Records Columbus & Bay. As luck would have it the current jazz buyer was planning to leave for a job with a catering company. Arthur's interview consisted of Stan Goman and the current jazz buyer interviewing him with very basic jazz questions Arthur aced and he was hired on the spot. For the next five years, Arthur worked at Tower by day and evenings as a trombonist.Through his tenure at Columbus & Bay, Arthur got to know the heads of the record labels and was approached by the US Managing Director of ECM Records which at the time was distributed by Warner Bros. Records, to be the National Sales Manager for ECM based out of New York City. For the next 40 years, Arthur worked in the WEA family of labels spending time with Elektra, Atlantic, Rhino and Nonesuch. At Nonesuch Arthur worked with John Adams, Steve Reich, Johnny Greenwood, Pat Metheny, David Byrne, Wilco, Fleet Foxes, Bill Frisell, Randy Newman and a host of other amazing artists. Arthur was also a producer, executive producer and reissue supervisor on many projects.

Today Sam Tsang aka Congee joins me down the line from London, as we look back on one of the iconic records of the last decade - Frank Ocean's 'Blonde'. We talk about how Frank Ocean builds a new world with each album, and makes the release an event. We talk about the detail of the production, the care put into every choice, stories from the making of the record and speculate on the practical concerns of making a record where every song went through so many iterations. We talk about the guest cameos from everyone from Beyoncé to Radiohead's Johnny Greenwood, the rock influence on the record and what we think Ocean has up his sleeve for the next album.

Mikko Gordon is a London based mix engineer and producer. He graduated from Goldsmiths with a degree in music and has worked with much of the exciting talent coming out of that university since then. After building a relationship with Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich through his act Ultraísta, Nigel recognised Mikko's talents, and brought him on to his team. Since then Mikko's worked on some incredible projects, most recently The Smile, a supergroup which include Radiohead members Thom Yorke and Johnny Greenwood, alongside Sons of Kemet drummer Tom Skinner, and the new Arcade Fire album 'WE'. Here, we join Mikko in the Neve room at his Hackney Road Studios base. The Process of Production is a music production podcast presented by Lawrence Diamond and Bob Matthews. Lawrence cut his teeth playing and writing in Indie bands before finding international success and touring the world with his band CITIZENS! During that time he worked with a host of revered producers including Liam Howe, Mark Ralph and Alex Kapranos. Since the band ended in 2016 he's been using that experience to help other artists develop their careers as a writer and producer while continuing to release his own music under various different guises. Bob learned his trade as the producer and multi-instrumentalist in Electronic Pop duo Alpines, whose career spans 3 albums, releases on major and indie record labels, shows with Florence + The Machine, The xx, Emeli Sandé, and a top 20 hit 'Tidal Wave' in collaboration with Sub Focus. In recent years he has turned his focus to producing other acts and has a studio in Chiswick in West London. Managing to occupy an incredibly narrow strip between Radiohead front man Thom Yorke's solo albums and the main band, whilst featuring fellow band alumni, Johnny Greenwood, wasn't an exciting prospect for me and pretty much Radiohead tbh. However, this was a much more thrilling and dynamic offering than expected. Offering some of the finest white funk this side of the immortal Krautrock legends Can and some of Yorke's most beautiful singing. Even if the dystopian lyrics were a bit slogany and the second half outweighed the first, it still would've made an excellent follow up to A Moon Shaped Pool - which it does I guess.
We're talking about the new supergroup, featuring Thom York and Johnny Greenwood from Radiohead, as well as Tom Skinner from Sons of Kemet. Does anyone else think it sounds like Thom is saying "we won't get cucked like that" in Free in the Knowledge? jubileestreetpod@gmail.com
Michael & Matthew talk the new divisive My Chem single, Kendrick Lamar's amazing new album (hence the episode title), and Thom Yorke and Johnny Greenwood's brilliant The Smile. Lots of laughs in between. Have a great week and thanks for listening
Nearly a year after Radiohead's Thom Yorke and Johnny Greenwood first teased The Smile, their side project with drummer Tom Skinner, the band's album is finally here. Indiecast hosts Steven Hyden and Ian Cohen dive into their album A Light For Attracting Attention (31:47), a title that can be taken ironically seeing as the side project garners far less attention than an official Radiohead release. After a fair amount of banter, Steven and Ian get into some of the relevant indie news from this week. Music discourse this week was mainly dominated by two very different album announcements: Kendrick Lamar's Mr. Morale And The Big Steppers (7:02) and the Jack Antonoff-produced Minions 2 soundtrack (2:20), which features groovy music by artists like Tame Impala and St. Vincent. In this week's Recommendation Corner (51:17), Steven plugs Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever's zippy guitar pop-filled album Endless Rooms. Meanwhile, Ian shouts out power pop band Hey, ily!New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. Listen to Episode 88 and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts.
