The consumer healthcare industry is changing. Companies are separating from their pharmaceutical parents and brands are shifting from therapeutic solutions to preventative health and wellness options. These shifts bring a number of challenges for OTC firms, notes AdverCheck managing director James Walmsley in the second part of his chat with HBW. For example, it is much more difficult to get science-backed claims for food supplements approved, he points out. With firms now also becoming standalone consumer health entities, there is no longer a direct pipeline of off-patent prescription medicines available for Rx-to-OTC switch, he observes. We may, therefore, see a new generation of switch-focused self-care companies and partnerships emerging. Keywords: Innovation, AdverCheck, OTC medicines, Consumer Health, Rx-to-OTC switch Timeline

A new research paper was published in Aging (listed as "Aging (Albany NY)" by MEDLINE/PubMed and "Aging-US" by Web of Science) Volume 15, Issue 2, entitled, “Body weight influences musculoskeletal adaptation to long-term voluntary wheel running during aging in female mice.” Aging increases the prevalence of sarcopenia and osteoporosis that are often both components of a musculoskeletal syndrome, osteosarcopenia. Osteosarcopenia is highly associated with frailty, falls, fractures, and disability, leading to decreased quality of life and increased morbidity and mortality. Frailty is the hallmark of aging that can be delayed with exercise. In this new research paper, researchers Yukiko Kitase, Julian A. Vallejo, Sarah L. Dallas, Yixia Xie, Mark Dallas, LeAnn Tiede-Lewis, David Moore, Anthony Meljanac, Corrine Kumar, Carrie Zhao, Jennifer Rosser, Marco Brotto, Mark L. Johnson, Ziyue Liu, Michael J. Wacker, and Lynda Bonewald from Indiana University, University of Missouri and University of Texas wrote that the present studies were initiated based on the hypothesis that long-term voluntary wheel running (VWR) in female mice from 12 to 18 or 22 months of age would have beneficial effects on the musculoskeletal system. “Frequently osteoporosis and sarcopenia occur concurrently. It is not known if one precedes the other or if one condition influences disease progression of the other condition [26, 27]. We hypothesized that long-term voluntary exercise started later in life (12 months of age) would improve both skeletal muscle and bone parameters in aging female mice up to 22 months.” Mice were separated into high (HBW) and low (LBW) body weight based on final body weights upon termination of experiments. Bone marrow fat was significantly higher in HBW than LBW under sedentary conditions, but not with VWR. HBW was more protective for soleus size and function than LBW under sedentary conditions, however VWR increased soleus size and function regardless of body weight. VWR plus HBW was more protective against muscle loss with aging. Similar effects of VWR plus HBW were observed with the extensor digitorum longus, EDL, however, LBW with VWR was beneficial in improving EDL fatigue resistance in 18 mo mice and was more beneficial with regards to muscle production of bone protective factors. VWR plus HBW maintained bone in aged animals. In summary, HBW had a more beneficial effect on muscle and bone with aging especially in combination with exercise. These effects were independent of bone marrow fat, suggesting that intrinsic musculoskeletal adaptions were responsible for these beneficial effects.” “Collectively, VWR has beneficial effects on bone health during advanced aging regardless of body weight, but VWR differentially alters bone parameters depending on body weight, with modifications in mechanical properties in LBW but structural modifications in HBW contributing to the prevention of osteopenia.” Full Paper: DOI: https://doi.org/10.18632/aging.204390 Corresponding Authors: Lynda Bonewald -bonewal@iu.edu, Michael J. On this episode, HBW speaks to Victoria Nichols, project director of Free the Pill. Operated by Ibis Reproductive Health, a nonprofit advocacy organization focused on advancing sexual and reproductive autonomy worldwide, Free the Pill is a campaign supporting increased oral contraceptive access through OTC birth control pills. Ibis Reproductive is also working with Perrigo to submit an Rx-to-OTC switch NDA later this year for its progestin daily oral contraceptive. In the wake of the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade on June 24, Nichols talks about the importance of advocating for OTC birth control, the limited availability of OTC oral contraceptives in the US, and the current legislation being introduced that would help ensure OTC birth control is covered by insurance.
In this episode, HBW speaks to Barbara Kochanowski and David Spangler from the Consumer Healthcare Products Association about OTC monograph reform. The old OTC monograph system was reimagined as a part of the 2020 CARES act passed in the early stages of the pandemic. Designed to streamline and modernize the OTC monograph system, the results have been slow as the FDA has had most of its attention on the pandemic. However, as the agency hires more staff, Spangler says that we should expect to see a ‘faster moving FDA' in the next three years. Spangler and Kochanowski also talk about the efficacy of the reforms and how they have helped educate their members about the changes.

Seamless systems are the cogs and gears that make every successful business run. When they work properly, they are finely tuned and seem magically effortless - but they don’t happen by accident. Seamless systems are something you, the business owner (and your team) have to intentionally create. Rosetta’s guest on this episode is Sonaya Williams and you might call her a systems and team guru. She specializes in putting together systems and processes that support and run business so that clients are cared for well, nothing falls through the cracks, and those who work within the business are happy and fulfilled in what they do. We all need this kind of stuff, don’t we? You won’t want to miss this conversation. Your business will live or die on the efficiency of the systems within it. All you have to do in order to see the vital nature of systems is to look around you. The created universe operates according to systems (though we don’t always call them that). The solar system, the water cycle, every human invention - all of them are governed and run by systems. When it comes to your business, the better your systems, the more profitable and stress-free your business will be. In this conversation, Sonaya Williams shares why she’s built a business to teach other business owners and entrepreneurs how to build and implement systems - and how she can help you get your business finely tuned and humming along. She’s even got a free gift for you that will enable you to find and hire the right team members, so be sure you listen. Need seamless systems? Start by creating a list of all the things you do. You won’t have a chance of building good systems for your business until you clarify exactly what it is you do and how you are presently doing it. The easiest way to do that is to begin making lists. You can jot down bullet-point outlines of the tasks you actually do or manage, in order to get an overview snapshot of what is on your plate. From there, begin prioritizing what needs to be systematized, optimized, or delegated first. Sonaya Williams is on the show to give you an idea of what seamless systems can do for you and your business. Your clients will be happier - and you will, too - so be sure to listen. In order to implement good systems in your business, you'll have to make a mindset shift. It’s one thing to recognize what smoothly working systems can do for your business. But it’s another to successfully implement them. Believe it or not, one of the things that often keeps entrepreneurs or business owners from implementing their carefully-devised systems is their own inability to let go of the work. It could be a tendency toward controlling everything that holds them back - or it might be good old perfectionism - but no matter the reason, a mindset shift is needed in order to bring good systems online and make them work. Rosetta's guest, Sonaya has a good deal of insight for you about how you can get over that hurdle, on this episode of Happy Black Woman. If you’re going to implement powerful systems you have to be willing to let go of the work. Most business owners are go-getters, people who can see what needs to be done and have the initiative and drive to make it happen. But that strength often comes with a downside: they believe that nobody can do the work as well as they can. The problem with that belief is that it’s seldom true. No doubt, they are talented but there are many things that go into making their enterprise run that they are not the best at. Letting go of the actual work that happens in your business is hard because it requires that you trust others and empower them to work on your behalf. On this episode of Happy Black Woman, Rosetta chats with Sonaya Williams about how to make that transition - and the two of them highlight the incredible benefits that come from making it. This one is a “must listen” episode for every wanna-be or current entrepreneur or business owner. Outline of this great episode [1:19] How Rosetta and Sonaya met (but not yet in person). Everyone who is part of the Happy Black Woman tribe wants to find income opportunities. But it’s vital to find the RIGHT income opportunities that can sustain you and your business over the long haul. It’s not about product launches or communities on Facebook. It’s about strategic income, built deliberately. Today’s guest is Nicole Walters, an income strategist who helps entrepreneurs build the kind of income that lasts. You’re going to get a ton of great insights from what Nicole has to share on this episode, so be sure you listen. Is a Facebook Group going to bring income into your company? Then why are you doing it? One of the big things entrepreneurs are doing these days is creating and connecting with their tribe through Facebook communities. But what many don’t realize is that if you don’t find a way to monetize that community - to make an income opportunity out of it - you’re wasting time that could be used to truly move your business forward. On this episode of Happy Black Woman Rosetta chats with Nicole Walters about why a Facebook group may not be your best option and what you could do instead to make sure your business supports you over the long haul. It’s a portion of the conversation worth hearing, so be sure you listen. Does your business have the systems to fuel income opportunities over the long haul? It’s great to have a 6 figure product launch. But if you are setting up your business to depend on product launches of that magnitude you are setting yourself up for headaches. On this episode, Nicole Walters shares why she believes that you should aim at income opportunities that run on a more automatic basis and how you can do that in a way that allows you the freedom and space in your lifestyle that makes for a happier life. It’s all on this episode of Happy Black Woman. You don’t have to go all-in. A side hustle can set you up for the full-time business you dream of. One of the things Nicole Walters discovered as he worked full-time in the corporate world was that what she was doing in her 9 to 5 hours wasn’t feeding her soul. She wasn’t adding the value to the world she knew she could - so she started what she calls a “side hustle.” It was a passion project she enjoyed that she was able to monetize. That enabled her to pave the way for an exit from corporate and an eventual full-time business. Many of the women who come upon the Happy Black Woman tribe are struggling to discover the best business to start. Part of the reason they struggle is they don’t know exactly what gifts they’ve been given or how those gifts might fit into a business. If you find yourself in that place you are going to be super blessed by this episode. Rosetta’s guest is Cori Willis, a vital member of the HBW inner circle mastermind who specializes in helping women discover their gifts and put them to work to fulfill their life calling. You will get so much value out of this episode if you listen so don’t put it off! Why are many entrepreneurs NOT doing what they are meant to do? Cori Willis works full time in the real estate industry and she sees person after person who work in real estate who don’t fit the jobs they are doing. They may be a property manager but hate working with tenants and lease agreements. They could be a real estate agent and don’t enjoy sales at all. Why does this sort of thing happen? Cori says much of the time it’s because people don’t take the time to discover how they are gifted and then apply those gifts to a particular business that will not only be more fulfilling for them but also bring greater blessing to the world because they are operating according to their unique design. You’ve got to hear how Cori describes it on this episode, she has wonderful insights. How can you discover the right business, the BEST business to build or join? Cori Willis is passionate about helping people discover the place where they can make their maximum contribution to the world. Many times it’s in a business - either one they create to meet a specific need in the world or one they join as part of an existing team to advance a great cause or service. Cori believes that every person who is interested in business even the slightest bit should take a first, little step to see what doors open. Oftentimes that’s one of the best ways to begin exploring the possibilities and discover your perfect fit. Cori has a lot of great stuff to share on this episode, so be sure you listen. If you don’t know where to get your business start: pray and be open. When Cori Willis talks about business, she always does so with the understanding that every person has been designed by God to bring specific things - their gifts - into the world to benefit people and fulfill God’s purposes. One of the first things she suggests is that you begin to pray, asking God to reveal or point out the gifts He’s given you - but as you do you need to be open. The gifts you think you have may not be what you think they are and the ways you think you are supposed to serve may not be the ways He has in mind. You’ve got to hear Cori’s thoughts on this point - they might set you free from some bad ideas and wrong thinking you’ve been following for a long time. If you are looking for your best business fit, the first thing to do is to take a step. Most people who are curious about whether or not they should get into business or become an entrepreneur probably should. That’s what Cori Willis believes. To her, that curiosity is a sign that there’s something along the business path that you are meant to find. There is something along the way that will open up for you to do or to be a part of. But if you’re going to discover what it is you need to begin walking down the path. Cori suggests you simply take a first step, as small as it may seem. That’s the only way you’ll move closer to where you’re supposed to be and be able to see another step down the path. Find out more from Cori on this episode.

Today’s guest on Happy Black Woman is a valued member of the HBW inner circle, Veronica Richardson. Veronica is on a mission to guide women who are in transition from broken relationships, failed attempts, and stagnant mindsets to a place of self-discovery in creating the life they truly desire. In this chat with Rosetta, Veronica shares her passion for the work that she does and what led her to discover her true purpose in life. She is inspiringly open about her journey and the “why” behind the work she does today through her business A Renewed Mind. Veronica helps women embrace their true selves and life an authentic life. Find your way to an authentic life. For Veronica, embracing her true self didn’t come naturally. She was raised in a single-parent household and faced the trauma of having an addict father from a young age. This forced Veronica to take on responsibilities in the household that would prevent her from being - or even seeing - her true self. She explains how she lived a life devoted to taking care of others, which in turn led to neglecting herself. This lack of self-care became a habit and - in 2011 - she was faced with a devastating separation, which became the foundation of her journey to truth. After finally being okay with loving herself and being authentic in the things she desired, it became clear to Veronica that she was meant to help other women. And so, A Renewed Life was born. The value of being okay with loving yourself. In Veronica’s life, taking care of others took precedence over self-care for many years. It wasn’t until she truly began to understand that it’s okay to love herself that she started to heal and become her authentic self. Veronica discusses how her childhood contributed to her inability to nurture herself and the power of finally coming to a place of self-love. She also shares the importance of really taking inventory of your life and making sure the people around you are living the life you want. Veronica offers some action steps that can help women who are ready for a renewed life get started. Start now and improve later. Veronica delves into one of the most important lessons of her journey: embracing fear and doing it anyway. She shares the importance of starting now and improving later and why this mindset can be truly transformative. Veronica goes further into the concept of envisioning the life you want - no matter what your life is now - and why you must surround yourself with people who are moving in the direction you want to go. She also discusses why it’s important to clean up your friends list when you realize some of the people in your life are holding you back. Giving yourself permission to try. This powerful discussion with Rosetta is filled with wisdom, insight, and inspiration that will leave you feeling ready to embrace your true self. Veronica shares some final advice for women who are ready to follow their dreams and start a business doing what they love: give yourself permission to try. She explains why it’s so important to get out of your own way and get out of your own head. Veronica gives insight into how we can actually be holding ourselves back from living an authentic life and it’s time to let yourself follow your purpose. She also shares her personal mantra: Say yes to my no, which is all about facing your fears and doing things that make you a little uncomfortable. According to Veronica, if you want something different, you have to do something different. Today's guest is Donna Newman-Robinson, who has been a part of the Happy Black Woman tribe for about a year. Donna is a veteran who found her purpose through her own experience after leaving the military. Her mission is to help women veterans discover their passion and purpose through her website. Donna's motto is simple: The next mission is you. After retiring from the military, Donna felt lost and confused about what to do next. She found her way and discovered her purpose through her own challenges. Today, she coaches fellow veterans through the transition process and helps them find their way in post-military life. In this chat with Rosetta, Donna shares some useful tips to help female veterans transition and understand the psychology of transition. The importance of Donna's mission and serving an underserved market. Once Donna found her footing after retiring from the military, she was inspired to build a business around helping other women just like her. She serves her market with passion and purpose, knowing that female veterans are certainly an under-served market. Donna takes Rosetta through some action steps that can help women understand the process of transitioning. The most important thing, says Donna, is understanding the psychology of transitioning. Having a support system is also essential to finding your way after the military. Donna discusses the value of remembering what your dreams were before you went into the military. She also shares some challenges most women will face and how to overcome them. How embracing your niche can help you succeed. As Donna delves deeper into her mission, it's clear that she has a well-defined niche. Staying true your niche helps you serve YOUR market, which is exactly what Donna does. From feeling alone to feeling overwhelmed, Donna is there to help female veterans through the entire transition process to ensure they are able to pave the way to a successful and happy future. A shift in mindset, shares Donna, is an integral component of transitioning into post-military life. She shares the challenges that come with taking off the uniform and adjusting to life. Her hope is that she can help women veterans avoid feeling lost and confused, like Donna did after she retired. The importance of community. Donna shares the difficulty of adjusting to no longer having the strong sense of community that comes with being in the military. That's why it's so important to find a community to join after retiring. For Donna, this is a part of her daily routine after finding the Happy Black Woman community. She shares a bit more about her daily routine, making it clear that staying focused and organized helps her get through the day. Donna also discusses how she recharges and focuses on herself as part of her routine, as well as the importance of this for all of us. Following your purpose and finding happiness. As Rosetta closes her chat with Donna, they discuss a book that inspired Donna along her journey, “Power Thoughts” by Joyce Meyer. She also shares some personal mantras that help to keep her grounded and focused in her daily life. As an introvert, Donna finds it essential to find ways to fit in the things that are just for “her”, including reading and dancing. Throughout this conversation with Donna, you'll find inspiration, passion, and a clear sense of purpose. The work Donna does is important and her passion for it is clear. Her final tip for the HBW community: don't be afraid to be different. Outline of this great episode [0:38] Rosetta's introduction of her guest, [1:24] Donna's mission and the work that she does.
