Desmond Cole, journalist, organizer, activist and author of The Skin We're In, provides a thoughtful analysis on where the Defund the Police movement is right now. It is hard to hear at times, but incredibly constructive. It is more of a discussion of where we need to go than lamenting on past political choices.Although, we do start off by asking Desmond how he feels about Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow's decision to aware the Toronto Police Services every penny they asked for. Considering the article he wrote for Ricochet right after the election, we weren't all that surprised by his answer. Find out if he thinks enough was done between Chow's victory and the first budget, and what needs to be done next. We also discuss the harm police do, both with their violence and the suppression of tactics used to keep power in check. It specifically includes just some the stories of the many young men in Canada harmed at the hand of Police, like Devon Fowlin and Sammy Yatim. All of our content is free - made possible by the generous sponsorships of our Patrons. TUNE INTO THE TOWN: FORMER POLITICIANS OPPOSED TO THE TORONTO BUDGET Tasha Kheiriddin is joined by Alex Blumenstein, Co-Founder of The Peak, Karen Stintz, CEO of Variety Village, who plans to run for the Conservatives in the next federal election, and Councillor Brad Bradford, Ward 19 Beaches-East York. It was a ban that had many Torontonians upset: how could you not allow residents to toboggan on hills across city parks? Well, it appears that City Hall has since had a change of heart and city councillors voted in favour of a reversal  (21-3 in favour) at 45 different parks where the ban was imposed. What does our panel think about all of this? Meanwhile, a number of former local politicians are voicing their opposition to Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow's budget plans including the 9.5 percent property tax hike which they say is too much considering the affordability crisis. The former budget chief, Gary Crawford, and Karen Stintz who served as a City Councillor and is one of our regular panelists were among the voices who signed an open letter on this matter. Finally, there is growing momentum with a petition of more than 25,000 signatures who are against the name change of Yonge-Dundas square. And if we are to change it, shouldn't the name be more local? WHAT OTTAWA'S DENTAL COVERAGE PROGRAM MEANS FOR OLDER CANADIANS Tasha is now joined by Dr. Brock Nicolucci, President, Ontario Dental Association A lot of questions  remain about how the Canadian Dental Coverage program is going to work...particularly for seniors! We know that the eligibility to apply has been expanded this month to include those who are 72 years of age and older but here's the thing...individuals who currently have private dental coverage are not eligible for this program. So, where do we go from here and do you have any questions about your eligibility and how the program works? Call in! ARE YOU FINDING PET OWNERSHIP JUST TOO EXPENSIVE LATELY? THERE ARE A NUMBER OF REASONS WHY Tasha is now joined by Dr. Enid Stiles, a Montreal-based veterinarian and a former President of the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association, and Linda Jacobson, Senior Manager, Shelter Medicine Advancement at Toronto Humane Society. Are you finding your bills for your cat or dog to be just too darn expensive these days? Well, you are not alone and there are a number of contributing factors making it that way. Do you have a pet? Do you feel the pinch of ownership on your wallet?

MPP Rasheed stepped down after providing incorrect information to the integrity commissioner during his investigation which involved a trip to Las Vegas where a developer involved in the Greenbelt deal was also on vacation at the time. And, this is the first time we convene with the panel after Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow and Premier Doug Ford met to discuss the City's budget hole stemming from the pandemic and out of that came a working group that will address it. MORE ON MPP RASHEED'S RESIGNATION 12:30-12:40 PM Libby Znaimer is now joined by NDP MPP and finance critic Catherine Fife (Waterloo). As we brought up in the previous segment, a second MPP in the Ford government has resigned in the aftermath of the Greenbelt scandal (that continues to plague the Ford government). His office did not provide accurate information to the integrity commissioner when it came to his trip to Las Vegas in 2020 where a developer involved with the Greenbelt also happened to be on vacation. So, what happens next and how impactful is this latest resignation on Premier Doug Ford's ability to govern with integrity? This week on Open Sources Guelph, we're in a summer mood, but there's no time to relax because there's a lot going on! First, we have to talk about the loud and growing group of people that want to deny history, and speaking of history, might Toronto be on the brink of electing its first female immigrant person of colour mayor? We're not here to tell the future, but our local MPP will be here to talk about the recent past in the interview. This Thursday, June 22, at 5 pm, Scotty Hertz and Adam A. Donaldson will discuss: The Jewel of Denial. Kimberly Murray, the independent special interlocutor for the search for unmarked graves, delivered a report last week outlining several challenges and one of the biggest is the "increase in the violence of denialism." A concerted effort is underway to pretend that the atrocities at Canada's residential schools didn't happen despite the mound of evidence to the contrary, so we have to interrupt this National Indigenous History Month to talk about why people want to erase those dark chapters. Chow You See Me. And you may be seeing more of Olivia Chow if the polls turn out to be true! The former city councillor and Member of Parliament is all but assured victory in the Toronto Mayoral byelection Monday, and this despite all the salt in her game these last few days with former campaign rivals John Tory and Doug Ford both endorsing other candidates. Leaving aside the fact that she still has to win on Monday, what might the future look like for "Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow"? And Just Mike That... The Ontario Legislature rose for the summer last week, and that means Premier Doug Ford may be too busy at the cottage to blow up the regular order for a couple of months. As we stop to catch our breath, we're joined by Guelph MPP and Green Party of Ontario leader Mike Schreiner to talk about the first year of this term, trying to influence the government on his own housing ideas, and the provincial response to the wild fire smoke that's settled over much of Ontario this month. Open Sources is live on CFRU 93.3 fm and cfru.ca at 5 pm on Thursday. Editor's Note: If you're a residential school survivor, or are a victim of the inter-generational trauma caused by residential schools, you can seek help for your pain and distress 24 hours a day by calling the National Indian Residential School Crisis Line at 1-866-925-4419.
