This week, Matt & Alexis talk with Joshua White. Joshua is a USMC combat veteran, co-founder and owner of Midwest Elite Services, LLC, and author of "Among the Greatest."  Twenty years ago, Scottsburg, Indiana native Joshua White was in his freshman year of college at Indiana University Southeast when he watched the twin towers collapse live in TV. A few weeks later, he enlisted in the marines and was sent overseas to Iraq. White was one of the first to take part in what was then known as “Operation Enduring Freedom." Upon return, White, like so many active military and veterans, started to have PTSD. He became a firefighter and was one of the first responders during the Henryville tornado. “Among the Greatest” is not just a typical book about his time in Iraq, but it's a legacy piece with inspiration and support for others who may have PTSD and similar experiences. Christine first became intrigued by digital media when she discovered that students wanted custom course materials to accompany their lectures and readings. But with the overabundance of materials available online—some excellent, some not so excellent—she found that students were often getting bogged down by the sheer quantity of online content, finding materials that weren't useful, or worse, getting inaccurate information from online sources. Listen to Christine's story about how she uses the digital competencies she has developed as a Digital Gardener to create bespoke course content like three-dimensional models, VR/AR, and visualizations for her students. Christine Eckel is Clinical Associate Professor of Clinical Anatomy, Cell Biology, & Physiology at Indiana University Northwest. Adam Maksl is Associate Professor of Journalism and Media at Indiana University Southeast. Paul Cook is Associate Professor of English at Indiana University Kokomo.

Trauma Warning: in this episode we speak about sexual assault and abuse in the disability community.  We had guests James (Joey) Wilkerson and Loren Pilcher on with us to discuss abuse and sexual assault in the intellectual and developmental disability community and the importance of education and prevention. James Wilkerson is Chief Diversity Officer/Title IX Coordinator at Indiana University Southeast, he is also an author and sexual assault advocate. His organization Greek Law has educated hundreds of college students about consent and bystander intervention.  We also had Loren Pilcher, who is the COO of Sweet Behavior Services. Loren is a passionate disability activist and researcher and has spent almost two decades working in the disability community and advocating for the disability community.  Carly mentions in the episode that she hadn't been formally trained on the signs and symptoms of abuse. Since recording the episode, she along with the few team members that hadn't previously had this training at DSL have completed it. DSL strives to educate ourselves, our staff, and our members on this very important issue and are taking steps each day to be better.  We encourage our listeners to insist that all staff working with individuals with disabilities in every setting are trained on this topic. We will continue this series and speak on the importance of consent and sex education for members of the intellectual disability community for the purpose of preventing exploitation and abuse.  If you have any questions or concerns, or would like to take action, don't hesitate to reach out: KindnessWarriorPod@dsoflou.org  Sources: Sobsey, D., D. Hello, kaiju lovers! “FRONKENSTEEN! FRONKENSTEEN!” In what has to be a providential “accident,” our Halloween episode is the perfect kaiju film for the spookiest time of the year: Frankenstein Conquers the World. Nathan is joined by Travis Alexander, co-host of Kaiju Weekly and the biggest Baragon fan we know (#Justice4Baragon), to discuss this wild if uneven Toho classic directed by Ishiro Honda. We discuss the film's relation to the hibakusha, the discriminated survivors of the atomic bombings, because Frankenstein's plight in the film mirrors their real-life struggles. Also, Travis gets to meet Godzilla's bumbling nephew, Godzooky (he's practically Travis's spirit animal), who helps Jimmy From NASA in the producer booth because he's still reeling from his beatdown at the hands of Daimajin.
