Postman's Knock (1962)

Real movie stardom pretty much eluded Spike Milligan, although he appeared in quite a few. He was an unlikely leading man and there are only a small handful of films in which his name appears above the title - this week Jeremy Phillips of Cinema Limbo joins Tyler to mull over one of them: arguably Spike's 'biggest' film, Postman's Knock from 1962. In the early sixties Spike was signed to MGM with a view to launching him on the same road to cinematic success as his erstwhile Goons colleague Peter Sellers but a lack of available projects and, frankly, the difficulty in finding something which suited Milligan's unique style put paid to any ambition he may have harboured of being honoured by the Academy. He made Invasion Quartet with Bill Travers and then soon after Postman's Knock, in which he starred as Harold Petts, a rural village postman who gets a job in London, and naturally havoc ensues. Add a rather weak romantic subplot and some comedy villains and the result is a pretty formulaic British black & white comedy film - the inclusion of Arthur Mullard, Mario Fabrizi and Warren Mitchell to the cast further cements it. But for all that it's not a bad film; there's some nice touches here and there and Spike does his best with what he's been given. Oh, and you'll be whistling the theme tune all day! There's No People Like Show People

Everybody's on a journey. And today, I am so honored to share with you this very open and honest conversation. The multi-talented Jeremy Phillips is currently the Director of Production at the South Bend Civic Theatre. We both ask a lot of questions in this episode. What is the purpose of theatre? What stories are we hoping to tell? Are we educating or are we entertaining? Jeremy says: "We need to stop trying to pass off these trauma stories as entertainment. Are you trying to educate white people or are you trying to get more people of color in the audience? If we could focus more on JOY and stop creating more traumatic experiences in theatre and celebrate new works and stop trying to just insert people of color into traditionally white roles and calling that progress...we'd really be doing something great in American theatre." Thank you so much for listening and continuing to support the podcast.

CIVIC STORIES: A South Bend Civic Theatre podcast with Alex Peek

In today's episode, I have returning guest Jeremy Phillips. I wanted to catch up with Jeremy and see how his first few months at the theater have been. After catching up, the conversation went to talking about his role as the Volunteer Coordinator. We both discuss the importance of volunteers at the theater and the large role they play to make sure the theater keeps moving forward. To learn more about how to volunteer at SBCT you can email Jeremy at ‘jeremy@sbct.org' to be added to the volunteer email list.

In 1954 the Goons produced a special show without an audience which is considered by many to be an absolute classic, but by others as a rather muted curio. The Starlings preceded the start of the fifth series of the Goon Show by a month and in some ways showcased the direction the show was to take. A satire based on actual attempts by local councils across the country to rid their public buildings and spaces of starlings, it was presented as a radio play but lacked some of the wilder excesses that Goons fans would come to expect. On the podcast this week is Jeremy Phillips, host of the Cinema Limbo podcast, who joined Tyler to discuss The Starlings. As well as asking if the show works without an audience (no spoilers), we look at some of the slight departures from character continuity and examine the ‘controversial' scenes that had BBC executives at the time fanning their armpits with fury. Also: Ray Ellington on an errand of mercy, Seagoon vs Pureheart, Happy Holidays featuring Peter Sellers… and we almost come to blows over whether it was Secombe or Bentine who was touring with Sellers in late 1954. CIVIC STORIES: A South Bend Civic Theatre podcast with Alex Peek

In today's episode, I have newly hired Jeremy Phillips. Jeremy is taking on the role of Director of Production at South Bend Civic Theater. We discuss how Jeremy realized early in life that being on stage was not his future in theater but being on the other side of putting on a show, doing Student Directing. From there, he went to college with a focus on Theater Administration, and after college, he was on his way to China for his first gig! After many years of travel and freelance work in multiple theaters all over the world, Jeremy has found his way to a permanent role here at SBCT.
