John Conte Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson What crazy fun to sit down with my old dear friend, bassist John Conte, whom I hadn't seen in decades. How is it possible that he appears to have aged barely a day? Seriously! John took us back to childhood days, his jazz-singing mother, Rosemary, his early days on guitar, and his brother Steve at first on drums. Their first band when John was 8 or 9, their early songwriting, including John's first song, Maryanne, Sittin on a Log, which he gave us a little taste of. He was a boy with a dream of playing arenas with rock stars. He told us how they flipped instruments, with John choosing bass. His college days, jazz-infused, where he gigged around with stellar players like Terence Blanchard. We tripped down memory lane, where we met, in the md-80s at The Rock 'n Roll Cafe on Bleecker Street, 1/2 of The Brothers of Conte, as I affectionately came to call them, with his brother Steve, they were weekly regulars whenever their schedules allowed. John was in Blood, Sweat & Tears, his first major gig, at the time, and told us all about that. Great stories there, including playing Madison Square Garden. Not bad for a 23-year-old. During their tenure at the Rock 'N Roll, late one rainy night they brought in their friend, Phoebe Snow, a life changer for me who had been a diehard fan since high school. The Phoeb's and I became fast friends, and I have the boys to thank for that as well as for years of amazing live music there, and at Spo-dee-o-dee's, Woody's, RockGirl, The Marquee, The Cafe Wha, True Blue and The China Club, where they were also a part of my RockGirl Jam Band. A stellar bassist, with an easy temperament and oh so easy on the eyes, it was always a joy when John was around. I made him tell his requisite Chuck Berry story. At that same time, the Conte brothers, as part of The Hudson River Rats, were laying the foundation for much of the session and road work that was to follow. Like Finding himself in the studio with Tony Visconti and David Bowie. John's description of hearing Bowie vocalize in his ear gave me goosebumps. He talked about laying down tracks with Peter Wolf and Ian Hunter, getting to jam with loads of his heroes. The Conte Brothers connected with Kyf Brewer and Company of Wolves were borne. They did some showcases, got signed, did a tour with Richard Marx, and foreshadowed John's future, one with Southside Johnny and The Asbury Jukes. John talked us through touring with Joan Osbourne (beautiful words here), Roseanne Cash, and Southside Johnny choosing him in 2007, a gig that would take him through to present day. There was a short tour with Billy Joel during his 2012 comeback with our friend, Tommy Byrnes, lovely to hear John's take on it, and great stories about his tenure playing with The Disciples of Soul, the house band for the American Music Honors where he got to play with honorees, Jackson Browne, Mavis Staples, John Mellencamp and Dion, as well as host, Bruce Springsteen and Steven Van Zandt. John's shared the stage with Bruce numerous times before, memorably for an impromptu 45-minute set with Southside. John's recounting of that and of playing with Peter Frampton (and Sheryl Crow) at the Sandy Hook Promise Benefit is another moving, goosebump-inducing tale. I loved every single second with my old friend. It's thrilling to see how his life has played and continues to play out. The young boy living his dream. Southside Johnyy's future may be unsure, but John's certainly isn't. He's always got multiple projects cooking, his own music in the works - check him out here johnconte.bandcamp.com and here Facebook.com/johncontebass I just adore the boy. He'll always be a rockboy to me and damn, he sure still looks like one. When Adele recorded “Make You Feel My Love” in 2008 for her debut album 19, many of her fans assumed she wrote it. After all, the British superstar-to-be had written or co-written all the other songs on that disc. However, more cosmopolitan ears in the crowd knew the truth, that this song had a distinguished pedigree all its own.In fact, it was Bob Dylan who wrote “Make You Feel My Love” for his 1997 Time Out of Mind album, and immediately the song attracted an illustrious following. Among the artists in the next decade to cover the tune on their own albums were Billy Joel (1997), Garth Brooks (1998), Trisha Yearwood (1998), Joan Osbourne (2000), Mary Black (2005), Maria Muldaur (2006), Bryan Ferry (2007) and Neil Diamond (2008).Meanwhile, Bob himself performed the song live more than 300 times in concerts between 1997 and 2019 on his Never Ending Tour.“It is one of the few songs,” says Wikipedia, “to have achieved the status of becoming a ‘standard' in the 21st century, having been covered by more than 450 different artists.”Our Take on the TuneSo, The Flood is pretty late to the party on this one. We didn't start playing it until earlier this year.It all began last fall, when Pamela and Charlie Bowen trekked to Cincinnati's Aronoff Center to see a road company performance of Girl from the North Country. This Tony-award-winning musical centers on the music and lyrics of 28 Dylan songs written over the past 60 years. The Bowens sat transfixed for the entire performance. Their ears especially perked up at the start of the second act when the characters of Mrs. Neilsen and Mrs. Burke stopped time in its tracks with their stunning rendition of “Make You Feel My Love.”All the way home to Huntington the next day, Charlie simply couldn't get the melody out of his mind. Within a week or so, he had roughed out an arrangement, knowing full well that it would be fleshed out as soon as he shared it with the guys. Here, from last week's rehearsal, is where that work stands now.More Dylan? Step Right This Way!By the way, Bob's tunes have been central to The Flood since its beginnings. If you'd like a deep dive into the band's Dylan repertoire, check out this free Bob Dylan playlist in the Radio Floodango music streaming feature: This is a public episode. I grew up watching MTV as a teen (and beyond) and one band that stood out for me were THE HOOTERS (A Philadelphia PA band that looked fun and lyrically different with lines and melodies you'd remember for a long time).   Who can forget the songs "And We Danced", "All You Zombies", "Day by Day" and "Hanging on a Heartbeat" ? It was a great honor to finally talk to Eric Bazilian! The Hooters just got off a tour with Rick Springfield & Tommy TuTone. ********* Matt and I (rob) talk to Eric about:  - Eric's beginnings at age 10 with his band The Limestones - Being a huge part of the monumental debut album from Cyndi Lauper (Eric wrote and played the guitar riff for Girls Just Wanna Have Fun; his partner Rob Hyman wrote Time After Time with Cyndi) - We find out how the HOOTERS got their name and Eric even shows us and plays us his very own Hooter - The creation of Joan Osbourne's hit song "one of us" (in which Eric wrote) - Eric's connection to Sweden - How The Hooter's are big in Germany (move over David Hasselhoff!) - Paul Stanley  - The Philly Taco  and much much more! ************ You can find Eric (or the Hooters) on Facebook & Instagram. Not many people are “One Degree of Separation” from Kevin Bacon, but this week's guest, Jason Sumney is. Growing up in Pittsburgh, PA, the son of a rabid record collector, Jason started his retail music career while in HIgh School at National Record Mart, a locally based, national chain that at its peak had 175 stores in 30 states. Knowing all of the latest releases and the camaraderie he felt with his fellow employees made working in a record store the perfect job for Jason. It was after meeting someone who loved Prince's “Lovesexy” album as much as he did, that Jason made the move to Manhattan. Hired by Tim Devin, Jason got a job at the Tower Records at 4th and Broadway, which set off a ten year stint with Tower, all in Manhattan. Throughout our conversation Jason talks about many of the well known New York Tower folks; Steve Harman, Hedi Kim, Ryan Bland, Suzanne Barnett, Mark Yarabino, Arnie Lewis and many, many others. After working in the store for a spell, Jason moved into the unique position of 4th & Broadway's Payroll and Human Resources clerk, making sure hundreds got paid correctly every other week and assisting the managment team with the myriad of Human Resource issues that would arise. A stint in Steve Harman's Regional Office, followed by time working at Tower Lincoln Center took place before settling back in the Regional Office again with Tim Devin. Jason tells us about his happy, jovial Robert Smith encounter, an invite only Madonna performance, Joan Osbourne in “writing mode”, helping Shock G of Digital Underground (Humpty Hump) find records, staring at Paul Simon going down an escalator and mailing director John Waters his lost credit card to an address in Baltimore, Maryland. Join us for a wonderful episode about Tower life in the 90's and beyond.

Husk at I kan lytte til vores første afsnit med fokus på megamix, hvor vi også havde Nick C. med som gæstevært her: https://apple.co/42wyZY8 Og så bør I besøge Nicks hjemmeside med fokus på danske DJ Pool her: https://poolmix.dk/ Playliste: Ben Liebrand – Grandmix 1986 The KLF – The KLF Megamix (Last Train To The Factory) DJ Pool – mmBattle VI (WinnerMix) Deep Dance 31 – The Best of 1994 Dance Now 95 Vol. 1 – Radiomegamix (Pharao, Sound Of Seduction, Baby D, Taleesa & 2InATent) Coco – I need a miracle Fragma – Toca me Fragma vs. Coco – Toca's miracle Adina Howard – Freak like me Tubeway Army – Are 'friends' electric? Hello, fellow slobs! This week, we're diving into Joan Osborne and her inescapable 1996 hit, “One of Us”. The Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars,[1] are a set of awards for artistic and technical merit in the film industry, given annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), to recognize excellence in cinematic achievements as assessed by the Academy's voting membership. The various category winners are awarded a copy of a golden statuette, officially called the "Academy Award of Merit", although more commonly referred to by its nickname "Oscar". The award was originally sculpted by George Stanley from a design sketch by Cedric Gibbons.[2] AMPAS first presented it in 1929 at a private dinner hosted by Douglas Fairbanks in the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel.[3][4]Music for YKS is courtesy of our friends Lydia Burrell, Craig Dickman, and Mark Brendle. For more on Joan Osbourne, check out www.patreon.com/yourkickstartersucks, where pie IS always a full meal. The latest episode of the podcast which asks; if God were one of us, who would he hate more out of M People and the Lighthouse Family? The longest episode of Chart Music EVER sees us pitched into the second half of the Nineties for the first time - and oh dear, our favourite Pop show is beginning to enter its slow decline and being pissed about with big style. The guest presenters are still in effect - but luckily for us, this week's frontperson is Julian Cope, who has brought a giant It's A Knockout-style builder to help him stage a prime-time protest against the Newbury Bypass. There's not one but two of those live satellite broadcasts, which demonstrate that California's weather fluctuates like an absolute bastard. Everything's piling into the charts right near the top and then dropping down again. And where's the Britpop? Musicwise, this is an absolute lucky bag of randomness, minus the chunky ring you wanted. Some Bedouin tribesmen sit around on a Trancey 'tip'. Joan Osbourne bangs on about God. Billy Corgan arses about in a car with The Teens. East 17 phone it in. Etta James is forced outside in the wind in order to make giant ships disappear and have a good lech at some sailors. Michael Jackson's nephews emote by some driftwood. Terrorvision jump about a bit. Alien Mr Benn gets everyone excited with the opening bars for this week's No.1, and then turns the dial right down to 16 rpm. And OH NO THE LIGHTHOUSE FAMILY GODDD. Sarah Bee and Neil Kulkarni join Al Needham on an euphoric extended chill-out Archers and Lemonade House tip for a long, hard stare at the bulging packet of 1996, veering off to discuss the comedy value of jacket potatoes, self-grooming tips from the stars, how to mix a Pina Kulkarni, full-on problem page questions in Nineties gay magazines, Star Trek Bhangra, and having homoerotic fever dreams about acts in the Chart Music Top Ten. Very long, very strong, very sweary.     See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

The Hooters were a pretty big band back in the mid-to-late 80s with three top 40 hits (and a few others that barely missed). Sadly, sales started to sag around the beginning of the 90s, but the band continues on to this day in some form, still drawing large crowds in parts of Europe. In this interview we talk about fickle American crowds, The Hooters slot playing at Live Aid, Eric and his Hooter partner Rob Hyman's involvement in the recording of Cyndi Lauper's smash debut album She's So Unusual, and him writing Joan Osbourne's "One Of Us", one of the biggest songs of the 90s. Eric remains a relentless artist, praying his muse will point him toward the next big hit.

It's part of the title of the comic.) for Kyle Rayner, the now near omnipotent being known as Ion. And in today's book, Green Lantern #146, we see what Kyle would do if he were God-like, which includes feeding the starving, stopping gang violence, and even interceding in the decades long Israeli/Palestinian analogue conflict of the Matiac and Magdum. But is all of this benevolence the right thing for a mere mortal to handle? Well, this week I discuss that as well with fellow Lantern podcaster Chad Bokelman (host of The Lanterncast, The Suit of Souls, A Ragman Blog, and Corps Conjecture). It's two Green Lantern podcasters for the price of one, and the price is FREE! So, not really that much more of a bargain. Making it in the music business requires lots of talent, perseverance, and luck. This is especially important if you are a young musician. For Chicago-born bassist Tommy Sims, it was sheer, soulful talent that unlocked the door of opportunity. His first big break came at the age of 23 when Bruce Springsteen, who had heard of Tommy’s talent, called and asked if he would come jam with the band. One day turned to three, and finally, he was asked to join the group. After his education with Springsteen, Sims gained the respect of the music industry as a premier songwriter. He co-penned the smash hit Change the World for Eric Clapton and Babyface, which won the prestigious Song of the Year and Record of the Year Grammy’s in 1997. His writing, producing and skill as a musician have brought him to work with a variety of soul, country, Gospel, funk and rock artists. Here’s a short list: Bonnie Raitt, Kenny Loggins, Joan Osbourne, Newsboys, the Neville Brothers, Michael McDonald, Michael W. Smith, Trisha Yearwood, Amy Grant, and the list continues. Join us as we delve into the life and music of one of Nashville’s most talented artists. Inside MusiCast is pleased to welcome Tommy Sims.
