John Conte Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson What crazy fun to sit down with my old dear friend, bassist John Conte, whom I hadn't seen in decades. How is it possible that he appears to have aged barely a day? Seriously! John took us back to childhood days, his jazz-singing mother, Rosemary, his early days on guitar, and his brother Steve at first on drums. Their first band when John was 8 or 9, their early songwriting, including John's first song, Maryanne, Sittin on a Log, which he gave us a little taste of. He was a boy with a dream of playing arenas with rock stars. He told us how they flipped instruments, with John choosing bass. His college days, jazz-infused, where he gigged around with stellar players like Terence Blanchard. We tripped down memory lane, where we met, in the md-80s at The Rock 'n Roll Cafe on Bleecker Street, 1/2 of The Brothers of Conte, as I affectionately came to call them, with his brother Steve, they were weekly regulars whenever their schedules allowed. John was in Blood, Sweat & Tears, his first major gig, at the time, and told us all about that. Great stories there, including playing Madison Square Garden. Not bad for a 23-year-old. During their tenure at the Rock 'N Roll, late one rainy night they brought in their friend, Phoebe Snow, a life changer for me who had been a diehard fan since high school. The Phoeb's and I became fast friends, and I have the boys to thank for that as well as for years of amazing live music there, and at Spo-dee-o-dee's, Woody's, RockGirl, The Marquee, The Cafe Wha, True Blue and The China Club, where they were also a part of my RockGirl Jam Band. A stellar bassist, with an easy temperament and oh so easy on the eyes, it was always a joy when John was around. I made him tell his requisite Chuck Berry story. At that same time, the Conte brothers, as part of The Hudson River Rats, were laying the foundation for much of the session and road work that was to follow. Like Finding himself in the studio with Tony Visconti and David Bowie. John's description of hearing Bowie vocalize in his ear gave me goosebumps. He talked about laying down tracks with Peter Wolf and Ian Hunter, getting to jam with loads of his heroes. The Conte Brothers connected with Kyf Brewer and Company of Wolves were borne. They did some showcases, got signed, did a tour with Richard Marx, and foreshadowed John's future, one with Southside Johnny and The Asbury Jukes. John talked us through touring with Joan Osbourne (beautiful words here), Roseanne Cash, and Southside Johnny choosing him in 2007, a gig that would take him through to present day. There was a short tour with Billy Joel during his 2012 comeback with our friend, Tommy Byrnes, lovely to hear John's take on it, and great stories about his tenure playing with The Disciples of Soul, the house band for the American Music Honors where he got to play with honorees, Jackson Browne, Mavis Staples, John Mellencamp and Dion, as well as host, Bruce Springsteen and Steven Van Zandt. John's shared the stage with Bruce numerous times before, memorably for an impromptu 45-minute set with Southside. John's recounting of that and of playing with Peter Frampton (and Sheryl Crow) at the Sandy Hook Promise Benefit is another moving, goosebump-inducing tale. I loved every single second with my old friend. It's thrilling to see how his life has played and continues to play out. The young boy living his dream. Southside Johnyy's future may be unsure, but John's certainly isn't. He's always got multiple projects cooking, his own music in the works - check him out here johnconte.bandcamp.com and here Facebook.com/johncontebass I just adore the boy. He'll always be a rockboy to me and damn, he sure still looks like one. Send us a textThis week, I review the recent Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes show that I saw on Dec. 6, 2024 at The Warehouse at FTC in Fairfield, CT. It ended up being the band's third to last show ever, as Johnny Lyon retired from performing for health reasons just a week later after being forced to leave the stage just a few songs into his final performance. So this show takes on extra meaning, and I have a lot of thoughts. So please join me for my review of the Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes show, this week on the Rock-N-Roll Show Podcast!===========================Connect with us on social media!YouTubeInstagram TikTok Facebook

A captivating oral history of the iconic music venue the Stone Pony and of the rise, fall, and rebirth of Asbury Park, New Jersey-featuring interviews with Bruce Springsteen, Steve Van Zandt, Southside Johnny, members of the E Street Band and Asbury Jukes, the Ramones, the Jonas Brothers, Jack Antonoff, and other legendary musicians. In 1970, Asbury Park, New Jersey, was ripped apart by race riots that left the once-proud beach town an hour away from Manhattan smoldering, suffering and left for dead.Four years later, a few miles down the coast in Seaside Heights, two bouncers, Jack Roig and Butch Pielka, tired of the daily grind, dreamt of owning their own place. Under-prepared and minimally funded, the two bought the first bar they considered, in a city where no one wanted to be, without setting one foot in the place. They named it the Stone Pony, and turned it into a rock club that Bruce Springsteen would soon call home and a dying town would call its beating heart. But the bar had to fight to survive. Despite its success in launching and attracting rockers like Stevie Van Zandt, "Southside" Johnny Lyon, and Springsteen, the Stone Pony-like everything in Asbury Park for the past half century-could only weather the drags of a depressed city for so long. How did the Stone Pony beat the odds to survive? How did it become an international rock pilgrimage site, not just for fans of Springsteen, but for punk rockers, jam bands, pop, indie, alternative and many other musicians as well? And how did it continue to inspire and influence a hall-of-fame list of New Jersey and national rock stars? The story of the Stone Pony-thrillingly charted in this detailed oral history-is the chronicle of a proud and unique cultural mecca blooming in a down-but-not-yet-out tough town. As Nick Corasaniti reveals, the stories of Asbury Park and the Stone Pony are that of modern America itself-a place of battered hopes, big dreams, and dogged resilience.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.
“I wasn't bound to a style,” Al Kooper has said. He was talking about his guitar playing but just as easily could have been talking about the totality of Al Kooper, songwriter, musician, singer, producer, band director. “If anything, I was known for being in the right place at the right time and playing the right thing.” Kooper has been at the heart of rock & roll's time/space continuum for much of its history.Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes emerged from the New Jersey Shore in 1974. Though they carried a significant influence (and some key personnel) from Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, the Jukes evolved as more of a white R&B horn band in the Memphis tradition embodied by Stax Records. Organized by singer John “Southside Johnny” Lyon, guitarist and songwriter Steve Van Zandt (who decamped for the E Street Band in 1975 but continued to produce, manage, and write songs for the Jukes), and Richie “La Bamba” Rosenberg, the band is well known for its high-energy live shows and no-holds-barred songs. The Jukes' brand of raucous soul, roots-tinged rock, and bluesy reverie has flourished across the band's long career. Rolling Stone named Hearts of Stone one of the top 100 albums of the 1970s and '80s.

Outside the Box was named the house band at The Stone Pony club in Asbury Park, NJ from 2010 to 2013. Outside The Box released one full-length album entitled "Bridge” which was produced by Jeff Kazee. Valentino joined Southside Johnny & The Poor Fools in late 2012. A side project of Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes, The Poor Fools released one full-length Americana album entitled “Songs From The Barn” which was produced by Jeff Kazee. In 2013, Valentino joined Reno, NV-based American Country band Hellbound Glory which toured as the opening act for Kid Rock's Rebel Soul Tour. The tour featured Kid Rock, Buckcherry and Hellbound Glory. Subsequent touring with Hellbound Glory included dates with ZZ Top, 10 Years (band), Hinder and The Supersuckers. Francis still records with Hellbound Glory. Since February 2015, Valentino has been touring with Bloomington, IL-based guitarist/ songwriter Matthew Curry. Tours have included dates with The Doobie Brothers, Steve Miller Band and Peter Frampton. Francis co-produced Matthew Curry's 2019 album "Open Road". As of February 2020, Valentino has been a member of David Lee Roth's touring and recording band. Tours have included KISS' End of the Road World Tour. Pete Mancini is a welcomed troubadour for our times, by building community though his music. His lyics are as comfortable as your favorite weather-worn blue jeans, and his style is reminiscent of Tom Petty and Hank Williams, with a hint of John Prine. Over the years, Mancini has opened for acts such as Jimmy Webb, Blues Traveler, Gin Blossoms, Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes, Pure Prairie League, Robbie Fulks, Amy Helm, Larry Campbell & Theresa Williams, Kevin Gordon, and Iain Matthews. I was fortunate to stumble on Mancini over a year ago during the pioneering days of The Long Island Sound podcast. Pete was one of my early guests on the podast and I was fortunate enough to sit down with him and talk about his travels and ever growing catalog of songs on the most recent episode out today. Pete Mancini keeps popping up on my radar. In a soon-to-be episode of The Long Island Sound Podcast, I interviewed Bill Herman of Paradiddle Records only to find Pete singing on the opening track of the Hank Williams Uncoved album, Lovesick Blues to perfection. More to come on the Hank William's project on May 12th. You can find a deeper conversation with Pete Mancini right here on The Long Island Sound. Learn how to discover new music and learn the methods and secrets of successful singer/songwriters and music professionals. You host, Steve Yusko engages artists and music industry professionals from Manhattan to Montauk and abroad. You'll learn from the experiences and strategies of music professionals, as well as where to find live original music playing in New York City and on Long Island. This episode originally aired April 12, 2022. “Nobody should ever take a band for granted,” writes the justly-celebrated rocker, songwriter, actor, producer, activist and music impresario Steven Van Zandt in his wild ride of a memoir, Unrequited Infatuations: Odyssey of a Rock and Roll Consigliere (A Cautionary Tale). “Bands are miracles. They're rarely perfect, but if a band has that magical chemistry, it should not be fucked with… Every great band is a matter of individual eccentricities blending in different ways with unpredictable, inconsistent, occasionally glorious results.” Here at the As Told To office, we believe the same could be said for the pairing of subject and collaborator, and at the risk of putting our host and our guests out of business we humbly suggest that there are some artists who are meant to go it alone in the memoir-writing department. Little Steven, the shape-shifting guitarist of Bruce Springsteen's E-Street Band and Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes who helped to stamp the Jersey shore sound, is one of those artists. His memoir—published in September 2021 and due out in paperback in September 2022—puts a brilliant exclamation point on a singular career, and he does so in a deeply personal way. “If this book was a song, you'd want to crank up the volume,” writes the noted film critic and screenwriter Jay Cocks. “It's one of the best rock memoirs ever. It's got soul, it's got humor, it's got some tough truths and some wild stories all wrapped up in battle scars and telling memories you'd usually need a backstage pass to catch… It's so much fun you can dance to it.” Indeed you can. We know. We tried. We suggest you do as well, but tune in to this episode first as a kind of palate cleanser and walk around in Little Steven's shoes for a bit, as he talks about what it was like to roll up his sleeves and sit down to write about his coming of age in the music business, his political activism, his unlikely star turn in “The Sopranos,” his leap of faith in producing and starring in “Lilyhammer” (the first-ever show to stream on Netflix), his pioneering work as programming director and rock ‘n roll curator, and an activist streak that has lately led him to launch his Rock and Roll Forever Foundation and TeachRock, which seeks to re-imagine a new K-12 national curriculum that makes room in our schools for an interdisciplinary focus on the arts. Oh, and by the way, check out Stevie's late-career renaissance and the kick-ass new music he's been putting out with Little Steven & the Disciples of Soul, including last year's “Summer of Sorcery” live album and the expanded edition of “Soulfire Live!”—we've been playing those babies on repeat since Stevie agreed to this interview. Singer, songwriter, producer, and actor Steven Van Zandt aka Little Steven is perhaps best known as a member of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band. But the talented musician also co-founded the band Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, as well as his solo act, Little Steven & The Disciples of Soul. He later found success in an entirely different career, playing the inimitable role of Tony Soprano's consigliereSilvio Dante in The Sopranos and Frank Tagliano in Lilyhammer. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member recently released his autobiography, “Unrequited Infatuations,” which chronicles the many twists and turns that make up his remarkable life. Steven tells Alec why Bruce Springsteen was originally not allowed in his band, why he decided to walk away from the music business, and how he became a part of television history - twice. He united rockers and rappers to battle South African apartheid with “Sun City,” oversees three satellite radio stations and a record label, wrote the memoir Unrequited Infatuations and he wishes he'd done more. Why does Stevie Van Zandt say the '70s were the worst time to record? Does he think Springsteen's concerts are too long? Why is he so frustrated? No one could tell this story like he does.
Singer-songwriter, producer and actor Steven Van Zandt sits down with Simon and Brian in Manchester, UK, for an inspiring conversation about songwriting and arranging, his expansive musical history, and forays into other art forms. The E Street Band guitarist also talks about his creative partnership with Bruce Springsteen, early records with Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, and the five crafts of rock.
WTOP Entertainment Reporter Jason Fraley chats with keyboardist Jeff Kazee of Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes, which performs tonight at The Birchmere in Alexandria, Virginia. They spoke in 2015 for the Rock & Roll for Children benefit concert in Bethesda, Maryland. He also describes playing for Bon Jovi's band.
Celebrating birthday boys Southside Johnny and Miami Steve! Come hear about how Stevie Van Zandt put his heart and soul into the soul based rock band Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes!
In this episode, we talk about and album by REO Speedwagon called Ridin' the Storm Out, a rather uneven recording of brothers Duane and Greg Allman called Duane and Greg, and another South Side Johnny and the Asbury Jukes album called I Don't Want to Go Home. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/reviewsfromthecrawlspace/message
Ken is joined by guest host comedian Chris Covert to interview Jersey Shore guitar legend Bobby Bandiera who tells us about playing lead guitar in Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes for twenty six years. jamming at The Stone Pony with Bruce Springsteen, fronting his own band, and playing at the White House with Eric Clapton, BB King and Stevie Wonder. And for the first time ever, a song is performed live in studio on ILRR. Some wild stories in this one!
Southside Johnny may not be a household name, but he is the very definition of the New Jersey sound. Heralded by the likes of Jon Bon Jovi and Bruce Springsteen (who has written many songs for him), Southside Johnny has made an indelible mark on the music industry. And this album is very much a collaboration with producer/songwriter/guitarist Little Steven Van Zandt (aka, Silvio on HBO's "The Sopranos"). If you like horns, Motown, and Stax, you'll love Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes.
In this episode, we talk about an album by an Canadian Band called The Blushing Brides called Unveiled, another from South Side Johnny and the Asbury Jukes called Love is a Sacrifice and an album by Harry Nilsson called Son of Schmilsson. There is some excitement in the middle of the podcast, you will have to listen to find out what that excitement is. Enjoy! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/reviewsfromthecrawlspace/message
Dumb Ass News - A Florida woman got completely naked, destroyed a bar, and was tased by police. (0:00) Ila was on to announce the headliner for this year's Milford Oyster Fest, Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes! Also, Joe LaChance was on to react to legal weed taking another step forward. (10:01) Theresa Caputo "The Long Island Medium" was on, and shared her thoughts on her weird job. Then Chaz and AJ talked about some of the experiences they've had with mediums in the past, getting it exactly right. Steve Cooper talks with musician/writer/producer/actor Little Steven. Little Steven is best known for being a guitarist and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame member for Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band. After creating the “Jersey Shore” sound with the Asbury Jukes he became a founding member of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band, and went on to become a successful solo artist in his own right recording and performing solo with his band Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul. As a songwriter his songs have been performed by Jackson Browne, Pearl Jam, Margo Price, Damian Marley, Jimmy Cliff, Southside Johnny and The Asbury Jukes, Gary U.S. Bonds, Darlene Love, Nancy Sinatra, Brian Setzer, Black Uhuru, and more. He also-co-produced the seminal Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band albums The River, and Born in the U.S.A. and has produced albums for Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, Gary U.S. Bonds, Ronnie Spector, Demolition 23, Majek Fashek, Lords of the New Church, Arc Angels, The Chesterfield Kings, The Cocktail Slippers, The Breakers, and more. As an actor he co-starred in all 7 seasons of The Sopranos and starred in, co-wrote, executive produced the award winning series Lilyhammer.
Note: This 45 record looks and sounds new. The only noteworthy "flaw" is a "Demonstration- Not For Sale" stamp on the A label (see scan).
Sobering Times is an honest and intimate reflection of recovery delivered through his signature brand of Rock ‘N’ Roll. As Goldmine Magazine states “...The Faces and The Rolling Stones with a dash of Otis...It rocks like a b*tch. His vocals are the best of his career...early indications make it seem likely that this will be his career statement.” Following the path he carved with his 2017 album Clean Getaway, Sobering Times (produced by Ricky Byrd and Bob Stander) continues his mission to deliver the message of hope to those recovering from addiction. He expresses the roller coaster of emotions and every day trials of recovery, from hitting rock bottom, to the gratitude of surviving and thriving in a sober life. On Sobering Times, Byrd is joined by an all-star cast of musicians: Bob Stander (bass guitar, percussion), Jeff Kazee of Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes (keyboards/ accordion/background vocals), Steve Holley (of Wings / Ian Hunter / Joe Cocker, contributed drums to most of the album), Liberty DeVitto (Billy Joel, drums), Rich Pagano (The Fab Faux, session drummer), Thommy Price (Joan Jett, Billy Idol, Mink DeVille, drums) and Christine “The Beehive Queen” Ohlman (vocalist, Saturday Night Live band). Additionally, he collaborated with Richie Supa (“I Come Back Stronger”) and Willie Nile, who duets with Byrd on “Recover Me”, in addition to Emily Duff, who co-wrote “Ain’t Gonna Live Like That.” Fittingly, he also recorded a cover of Merle Haggard’s “The Bottle Let Me Down”. Byrd chose the Sobering Times release date of September 25 as it’s also the 33rd anniversary of the day he started his sober journey. Having lived through the disease of addiction himself, Byrd has made it his mission to help others as a recovery coach and drug/alcohol counselor, who visits schools, rehab facilities, and detention and detox centers to perform, talk, and lead recovery music groups. In fact, he gave away almost 2500 copies of Clean Getaway at these facilities, so clients could take the message of recovery home with them. He dedicates Sobering Times to all of those who struggle with addiction, as well as the recovery warriors who help those who are struggling, those that support a clean and sober lifestyle, and of course, those that still love loud and proud Rock ‘N’ Roll. “As far as third acts go, I couldn't be more grateful for mine,” says Byrd. “I get to use the undeniable power of R'n'R to spread the recovery message to those that are struggling....pretty... pretty... pretty good.”

Soulful rockers The Slim Kings have revealed another new track from their forthcoming album today; click here to check out “Soldier On”. Lyrics from “Soldier On,” written by drummer Liberty DeVitto, singer/guitarist Michael Sackler-Berner and bassist Andy Attanasio exemplify DeVitto’s fighting spirit and longtime career: “Wounded and limping/But we still got something to prove/Believing when they say/We got nothing left to lose”. Also out today is DeVitto’s new memoir, Liberty: Life, Billy and the pursuit of Happiness. The book traces a musician’s journey: early childhood bands, a rise through the local club scene, wedding bands, building a career, his first tours, and then a juggernaut of success, excess, and stardom with Billy Joel. Liberty is a tale of following and fulfilling your dream, a love story of a drummer and his drum, and an inside look at the music and career of Billy Joel from the man who viewed it from the best seat in the house: the drum throne. To order the book, please click here. Recorded in an analog studio without a computer in sight, The Slim Kings’ forthcoming new album, THE KING’S COUNTY CLASSIC, is due out on October 16th. Produced by Nick Movshon (Amy Winehouse, Gaga, Bruno Mars, Antibalas), THE KING’S COUNTY CLASSIC was recorded at The Diamond Mine in Queens, the hub for Daptone/Truth & Soul. The album features the stripped-down, performance-first, rock n’ roll for which The Slim Kings have come to be known married with American soul sounds. Click here to access the album cover for THE KING’S COUNTY CLASSIC. The band will be releasing new tracks from the album leading up to its complete release in October. The Slim Kings feature singer and guitarist Michael Sackler-Berner, known for over forty primetime TV placements, R&B bassist Andy Attanasio (Joey Badass, Black Thought, Diddy) and legendary drummer Liberty Devitto, who spent more than three decades playing on seminal records for and performing with Billy Joel, Phoebe Snow and Paul McCartney. Blending elegant songcraft, impeccable instrumentation and a whole lot of soul, The Slim Kings have opened for Los Lonely Boys, ZZ Top, Southside Johnny and The Asbury Jukes and The Spin Doctors. Their music has been featured in over a dozen primetime TV shows including Showtime’s Nurse Jackie, CBS’s FBI: Most Wanted, Amazon’s Cocked, and Netflix’s Bloodline. The band has also recorded with Grammy-winning producers Steve Jordan (John Mayer, Keith Richards) and Joel Hamilton (Tom Waits, Black Keys, Highly Suspect) and regularly headlines clubs in the tri-state area.
Former Joan Jett & the Blackhearts guitarist Ricky Byrd has unveiled full details about his long-in-the-works third solo album, Sobering Times. The album is a follow-up to Byrd's 2017 studio effort, Clean Getaway, and similarly is a collection of tunes that focus on offering hope to people recovering from addiction. Sobering Times arrives on the 33rd anniversary of the day Byrd started his own journey to sobriety. The 12-track collection features contributions from veteran musicians including longtime Blackhearts drummer Thommy Price, ex-Billy Joel drummer Liberty DeVitto , former Wings drummer Steve Holley, Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes keyboardist Jeff Kazee , and longtime Saturday Night Live band singer Christine The Beehive Queen Ohlman. The album features a duet with veteran singer/songwriter Willie Nile , plus a collaboration with Richie Supa, who co-wrote several well-known Aerosmith tunes. Following the record's theme, Sobering Times features a cover of the Merle Haggard classic The Bottle Let Me Down. Theme music for Madame Perry's Salon composed and performed by Denton Perry. Southside Johnny has been a leader of the Jersey shore music scene, that includes Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band and Bon Jovi, since the mid-1970's. He's released 18 studio albums throughout the years and numerous live recordings. Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes feature the powerful Miami Horns on many of their albums, providing a wall of sound that stands alone among many of today's bands. Award winning program director Ray White caught up with Johnny backstage in September of 2011 to talk about his Hearts of Stone album, that was praised by Rolling Stone magazine, changes in the record industry and insights on his Pills and Ammo release. His latest effort is a great project called Soultime! In our "showcase segment" we feature Toots Hibbert, who passed away on September 11, 2020. A pioneer of the Reggae and Ska genres, he formed Toots and The Maytals in 1962. This Grammy award winners' last studio release in 2020, was Got To Be Tough. A high-energy, hard driving show, from Classic Artists Today.
Saxophonist Eddie Manion just completed being horn director/arranger for the last 3 years with Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul. Ed who got his start with Southside Johnny with the "original" Asbury Jukes. Ed also has toured frequently and recorded with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band and played their historic Super Bowl Halftime Show and was also a member of The Seeger Sessions Band. After recording his first instrumental album, Night Life in 2015 Ed is currently recording a new record that will be released later this year. We talked about The Music Biz, his career and the challenges of not being able to go out on the road during the pandemic.

We ended out our 13th Annual Deepwells Music Festival the same way we ended our first outdoor concert 13 years earlier – with Long Island’s most prolific band, Miles To Dayton. The M2D recipe is simple: four-part vocal harmony, clever songwriting, improvisational violin and cello, and an infectious rhythm section that stirs up the creative stew. Having built a large grass roots following of fans young and old, Miles to Dayton has headlined performances at the Patchogue Theater and sold out the Boulton Center, with notable gigs at the Paramount Theatre, Great South Bay Music Festival and the NoFo Rock and Folk Festival. They’ve been the featured artist at the Acoustic Long Island Podcast and Summer Concert, emerging artist at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, and have performed in intimate listening rooms such as Club Passim in Boston, and the Living Room in NYC. Equally at home in the acoustic or full band setup, m2d has shared the stage with the likes of The Infamous Stringdusters, Rhett Miller, The Subdudes, Jorma Kaukonen, The Dirt Farmer Band, Tom Paxton, Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, and Richie Havens, to name a few. Recorded some weeks ago, I held on to this gem, not knowing why... until Saturday, when Chuck Berry passed. Old pal, Steve Conte, who's got one of the greatest rock voices of all time (he was Paul Simon's vocal stand-in for years) has played with just about everyone throughout his career, has a classic Berry story, which he shares here. Time has come today. Steve’s first road gig, was touring with Blood Sweat & Tears in the mid-80s, right around the time I began booking him on Bleecker Street in NY. From there Steve played with J. Geils Band frontman Peter Wolf, the beforementioned Chuck Berry, toured with Billy Squier, Willy Deville, Eric Burdon, was a member of reformed New York Dolls and has shared the stage with an innumerable number of his heroes from Sam Moore, to Springsteen. Steve’s been writing for, recording and touring with former Hanoi Rocks frontman Michael Monroe for the past six years, supporting Guns & Roses, The Foo Fighters and Motorhead. Steve's solo debut, The Steve Conte NYC Album, included a tune, OK DJ, which earned him the #2 Coolest Song of the Year, behind Bruce Springsteen, on Little Steven's Underground Garage... members of the Foo Fighters, Alice Cooper, Mott The Hoople, The Wallflowers, , Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes, to name a few, joined Steve on the album. But, it’s Steve’s own "covers" album, International Cover-Up. currently enjoying much airplay on Little Steven's Underground Garage and the opening track, "Somebody's Gonna Get Their Head Kicked In Tonight" which was voted #5 Coolest Song Of The Year, behind The Monkees and Ian Hunter, which signals what will no doubt be the solo recognition he’s long deserved. Check it. Check him. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJTHWDgHYgI It's thrilling to see this day come for one of my all-time favorite rockers. It's been a lotta years. So fun to sit down and catch up. Southside Johnny joins host Robin Milling to talk about his new CD Songs From The Barn. Branching out from the Asbury Jukes with The Poor Fools, it features a collection of styles from country to samba, bluegrass to honky tonk. Many of the songs are co-written with Jukes' keyboard player Jeff Kazee which John says he's most proud of to date. He tells Robin the songs are inspired by experiences he's had with a touch of added color. Living in El Paso, Texas back in the 60s, he laments about love lost at the border in Mexicali Waltz. He says, 'we would cross the border to Juarez and try to find trouble and we usually did find it. There were all these beautiful girls there and I was attracted to many of them. We were young and wild so my fantasies would take over and I would dream about these girls for decades to come and write about them in these songs!' After almost 40 years with the Jukes, The Poor Fools gives Southside the chance to play for fun in smaller venues like converted churches. John recalls the old days playing schools, when his dressing room was a kindergarden classroom. 'I just remember sitting on the little chairs! You know you take this stuff humourously because otherwise you'd really get down. It's some of the things you go through just to get on stage for a couple of hours and make music.' John doesn't measure his success by longevity. He looks to the future and will 'keep riding the train until it stops.' Although he may consider looking back on it all when he's 80!
Southside Johnny of The Asbury Jukes joins Robin Milling at Dylan's Hotel in New York, currently on tour in support of his new CD, Pills And Ammo. The South tells Robin what it's like to be affectionately called 'New Jersey's second son,' his colorful and faithful fans, and covering Tom Waits tunes with a big band.
