In today's episode of our Beauty Costs series, we're looking at a part of the beauty world that's worth over ten billion dollars. K-beauty is one of South Korea's biggest exports, and in the last couple of years it's overtaken the United States in becoming the world's second biggest exporter of beauty products. So we head to Seoul, where reporter Nina Pasquini finds out why consumers there think it's infiltrated the mainstream market. We speak to the founder of one of the biggest K-beauty disruptor brands, Alicia Yoon from Peach & Lily. Sharon Ahn, beauty analyst from global consumer trend forecaster WGSN, tells us why K-beauty is set to become worth twenty billion dollars in the next few years. South Korea has cultivated an era of cultural dominance, in music, acting and now in beauty. A lot of which has been accessible online, mainly through social media. Youtuber SSIN has over one a and a half million subscribers to her channel, she tells us what K-beauty means to her and her thoughts on its success. Are you so busy you find yourself running to the bathroom? (And just forget all those other needed acts of self-care…) If so, my opening essay is for you. Why not slow down even just a bit to really give your heart and soul time to catch up. Here's how… “Photoshopped perfection is neither a realistic nor a healthy goal” says Jude Chao, an expert in Korean skincare … yet, can I just say this woman in her forties has AMAZING skin! Whew! And, hey, it's well earned—she really knows the science involved here. Korea is famous for its day spas, dermatologists and plastic surgery clinics, in part thanks to a variety of treatments that aren't available overseas. But the other thing they have in common is their use of clinical Korean skincare brand; the type of products you'll usually only find at an aesthetician in western countries. Today, we're exploring what they are, how they're different from non-clinical brands and some of the top trending clinical K-Beauty brands. CONNECT WITH ME Instagram: www.instagram.com/lauren.kbeauty Facebook: www.facebook.com/stylestory.au Website: www.thekoreanbeautyshow.com Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com.au/stylestoryau Tik Tok: https://vt.tiktok.com/ZSaHUgHL/ Download Your Free Guide to K-Beauty: https://mailchi.mp/f845eb5d20cd/guidetokbeauty K-Beauty News Headlines - Amore Pacific Publishes Results on the Skin of Wearing a COVID Face Mask for a Day Amore Pacific's Research Institute of Technology published the results of their research on the effects of wearing a COVID face mask in the international journal on Skin Research & Technology. Whereas one might expect that the area inside the mask would be moistened due to the humidity trapped in the mask, the study confirmed that it was actually the opposite. Dryness was actually being caused by the breath, which had been heated by the body temperature and then combined with the sealing effect of the mask. After wearing a mask, various skin changes were observed: Redness became pronounced on the cheeks The perioral area recorded lower levels of hydration Sebum secretion was visible on the forehead, cheeks, chin and perioral area. Transepidermal water loss was measured. The study concluded that although wearing a mask is essential for stopping the spread of the COVID-19 virus, skin placed in a mask-wearing environment needs proper moisturizing and soothing care. Skin drying can lead to aging, including a reduction in elasticity and the appearance of wrinkles. What differentiates Clinical Korean Skincare brands from ordinary brands? A few things: Where they are stocked - skin clinics and plastic surgery clinics vs B2C and online sites Price - they tend to be much more expensive (2-3 times the price of roadstore brands) Ingredients - heavy focus on rejuvenating and skin regenerating ingredients. Patents and registration as “기능성 화장품” (known in English as “functional cosmetics”). These are more strictly regulated by the KFDA because they have the qualities or properties of drugs. How "Functional Cosmetics" in Korea are Regulated Under Korean cosmetics and pharmaceutical legislation, there are different levels of regulations for various cosmetic products. A special category known as “functional cosmetics” are the most strictly regulated, and these are products that make whitening claims, wrinkle reducing claims and SPF products. Another category is regulated as “quasi drugs” and these include things like acne improvement, treatment of atopic dermatitis and hair loss prevention. If the product is making claims about cells (collagen expression productivity, tyrosinase activity inhibition, cytotoxicity etc) the products need to undergo cell efficacy evaluation testing. Famous Aesthetician Brands in Korea There are many famous clinical skincare brands used in clinical settings throughout Korea and the world. Some of the most popular include: Genabelle The brand creates formulas with a skin soothing effect that are moisturising. They focus on light application and absorption. Currently stocked in domestic skin clinics and plastic surgery clinics. They work with ingredients like PDRN (a DNA extract ingredient that helps with wound repair) Peptides, Centella asiatica (Cica), Allantoin and Houttuynia cordata Some of their most popular products: PDRN Rejuvenating cream (aimed at wrinkle reduction and brightening, barrier repair, elasticity, calming and repairing) Ultra V This is a bio-medical beauty brand that creates functional cosmetics as well as devices and threads for thread lifts Their products are stocked in both skin clinics and plastic surgery centres including dissolving threads for thread lifts, medical equipment and functional cosmetics. They have developed a type of thread that lasts for 2 years once inserted made with PCL(Polycaprolactone) and PDO(Polydioxanone) Histolab This is a professional aesthetician's brand widely used in Korea and distributed only to medical clinics. They use plant stem cells and many more One of their most famous products is their Azulan Complex Ampoule 72 Dr G This is an internationally renowned brand started by the Owner of Goeun Sesang ("Beautiful World") skin clinic. Wide variety of ingredients to treat different skin issues Red Blemish Clear Soothing Cream Clinical is very popular in Korea. Easy Dew This is a famous cosmeceutical brand that holds patents for its cosmetic technologies. They also sell medical devices. They work with sH-oligopeptide 1 (EGF) and patented ingredients Two of their most popular products domestically are DW-EGF Moisture Synergy Ampoule, DW-EGF Cream Presome RX What to do if you liked today's episode - Clinical Korean Skincare Brands Ep-57 Don't forget to subscribe and leave a rating so that others can find us! Winter is on the way and while that’s great for cozy fireplaces, hot chocolate and snuggling in bed, it ain’t so great for the skin. If your skin suffers during woolly weather, then stick around because on today’s episode, I’m running through my recommendations for the best Korean beauty products for winter! CONNECT WITH ME Instagram: www.instagram.com/lauren.kbeauty Facebook: www.facebook.com/stylestory.au Website: www.thekoreanbeautyshow.com Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com.au/stylestoryau Tik Tok: https://vt.tiktok.com/ZSaHUgHL/ Download Your Free Guide to K-Beauty: https://mailchi.mp/f845eb5d20cd/guidetokbeauty K-Beauty News Headlines A recent presentation at the Export Expansion Strategy Seminar for 2021 in Korea indicated that the two big trends for the industry next year will be “Clean Beauty” and “Eco Friendly”. When it comes to “Clean Beauty”, the data shows that consumers will remain interested in everything from the perceived cleanliness of the ingredients in their cosmetics to the certifications of the products. The safety of products will be a focus moving forward thanks to the impact of COVID-19. There will also be a shift from focusing just the packaging of the products to looking at how they are actually sold as well. In terms of “Eco Friendly” trends, there will be more emphasis on “zero waste” and sustainability generally. Globally, there is a push to ban micro plastics and policies to encourage the use of environmentally friendly ingredients. The Seminar also reported a massive up-tick in home-care and self-care bought on by the virus. Korea has reported a growth in the export of nail enamel products and in the States, there has been a massive uptick in DIY and self-care categories for beauty. Dry Skin Dry skin is sad skin and can make you look older, as it makes wrinkles and fine lines appear more obvious and your makeup look cakey and flakey. Korean beauty products are perfect for drier skin, as they are focused on layering and hydrating. I love d’Alba Piedmont’s First Spray Serum for spritzing throughout the day and Dr Jart’s Ceramidin line for truly dry, damaged skin. Additional Steps to Consider Adding into your Routine Winter is one time of the year where your skin might actually benefit from adding additional products into your routine. If your skin is particularly dry or suffering from the affects of artificial heating, focus on rehydrating it with nourishing serums, emulsions, night creams and overnight sleeping masks. Rough and Cracked Feet Rough winter feet are often part-and-parcel with the colder weather, with hard winter boots taking their toll on cramped feet. Forget trekking to a salon in the cold and tend to your tootsies from the comfort of your own heater! Try a luxurious foot healing cream, like APLB Intensive Healing Moisture Foot Cream. Even the most difficult and severe cases of dry, rough, cracked, hard and thickened skin are no match for this tough-acting cream. Combining the powers of Glycolic Acid, Lactic Acid and Salicylic Acid – three of the hardest-hitting acids around – this cream goes to work on dead skin to reveal the baby-soft stuff hiding underneath! As a bonus, it can also be applied to the knees, feet or any part of the body where dryness and flakiness occurs. Chapped Lips If your lips are falling apart in the wind, then it’s time to turn to the big guns – lip sleeping masks. I love Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask and KLAVUU Nourishing Care Lip Sleeping Pack. They transform lips from chapped to supple and soft overnight, and can even double as a lip gloss during winter as well. Scaly Elbows and Knees Scaly knees and elbows are the worst! Hit them with natural Aloe Vera. Filled with antioxidant properties that help the skin heal quicker, aloe vera is effective in treating a variety of skin conditions, including flaky or dry skin. Benton Aloe Soothing Gel contains natural, gentle ingredients with no alcohol or fragrance. It helps soothe irritated skin, as well as moisture damaged skin. Dry Face If your entire face is feeling like an emery board, then it’s time to hit it with the big guns. Grab yourself a box of APLB’s Yellow Masks and Jelly Ko Bubble Tea Steam Cream and get to work. Mask sheets in particular are an essential part of any good dry skin routine. This is because they provide targeted hydration directly to the skin. Made on a base of four types of peptides, these luxe face masks provides an intensive treatment for skin. After 15 minutes, your skin will feel suppler, softer and refreshed. Vox Senior Correspondent and skincare connoisseur Alex Abad-Santos is here and we’re dedicating some time to male skincare with questions like: how? And also, why? And also, is it girly for men to wash their faces? (No). Also: what the Kardashians are up to (?????), what the women from Little Women (2019) are up to (?!?!!?!), and why Alex loves his Peloton (and why Caroline will never get one). Skincare is a total must in my book. I invest a huge portion of my life in maintaining healthy skin to live a more blissful life. My routine changes quite often but my current one is my new favorite. To start off, we're exploring a topic that is slightly controversial - why the 10 Step Korean Beauty Routine is a lie. We'll discover where the concept originated, what the "steps" of the 10 Step Routine are supposed to involve, and what to focus on instead when getting started with K-Beauty. Topics discussed in this episode: 10 Steps of Korean skincare was a term coined by an American marketer. The truth is that although Korean beauty routines are multi-step there is no such thing as one “10 step routine“ that all Korean women follow. Women’s skincare routines are as varied as they are – some people tend more towards the minimalist side and some people use multiple steps of skincare. What IS true is that a typical Korean skincare routine does contain many more steps than a typical western routine but that’s also changing a lot these days too. What does the “10 Step Routine” look like? It goes a bit like this: a balm or oil cleanser (1), a foaming cleanser (2), an exfoliant (3), a toner (4), an essence (5), an ampoule or serum (6), a sheet mask (7), an eye cream (8), a moisturizer (9), and then either a thicker night cream or sleeping mask or an SPF (10). Don’t let the idea of a 10 Step Routine turn you off K-Beauty The easiest way to find the best skincare routine for your skin is to try out some different products and routines and see which fits you best. Whether it’s a 10 Step Routine or a simpler one there is no one-size-fits-all approach in either K-Beauty or skincare generally. I got to sit down with the queen of K-Beauty herself, Charlotte Cho! Growing up in LA, sunscreen and toner seemed to be completely trivial to Cho. But after moving to South Korea post-grad, she was exposed to her own culture through an entirely new lens: skincare. And so upon returning to the States, she decided to start Soko Glam: an online retail shop completely dedicated to K-Beauty. Today, after eight years in the making, Charlotte has not only introduced the concept of the 10-step skincare routine to the American market, but has democratized beauty in such an unpredictable way. Tune in to hear about Charlotte’s favorite ingredients, her new brand - Then I Met You, and so much more!Links to Products/Resources Mentioned: SKIN: Mizon Snail Cream, Then I Met You Essence, Neogen Micro Essence, Then I Met You Cleansing Balm, Lash Eyeland, COSRX Pimple Patch, Daily Sheet Mask Tissue Box, Skin Concierge, The KlogJoin the Naked Beauty Community on IG: @nakedbeautyplanet Rate, Subscribe & Review the Podcast on Apple Thanks for all the love and support. We are moving from discussing the past year to the present one, with all the forthcoming skincare gems that are on my Korean skincare wish list for 2019! Now, I can't really say that I feel hyper confident about actually being able to afford all of the products on my K-beauty wish list for 2019, but hey - a girl can dream, am I right? And, really, this is mostly about having fun fantasising what the new year will bring to my skincare shelf and talking about Asian beauty products that are currently on my radar as potential new superstars! Now, at the beginning of the episode, I got a little carried away ranting about "product review events" on Instagram - if you want to avoid this slight deviation from the actual episode topic, skip 3:01 - 15:34.
