Today, I have the pleasure of interviewing Jeff Walker: Jeff is one of the world's most successful online entrepreneurs the creator of Product Launch Formula and the #1 NY Times bestselling author of the book Launch. He has spent the last 15 years helping people launch their online courses, memberships, coaching and books. His students and clients have done over a BILLION dollars in launches in hundreds of niches and markets… and in dozens of countries around the world. Jeff lives in Durango, Colorado and he loves to get outside for all kinds of adventures. On a more personal note, Jeff is someone I am honored to call a teacher and mentor. I've been following his work pretty much for as long as DIY MFA has existed and got the first edition of his book Launch when it came out in 2014. I read it cover to cover and still have that paperback edition with all my highlights and mark-ups, which I keep next to my desk. In 2017, I was finally ready to make the investment and do the Product Launch Formula (PLF) Coaching Program. My team and I relentlessly applied the techniques to our flagship DIY MFA 101 course (with epic results!) and since then, we have applied PLF techniques—with our own special word nerd flair—to launch all our DIY MFA programs. Today, we'll be talking about launching as it pertains to launching a book.   In this episode Jeff Walker and I discuss: Why his first launch was the most important and the role his email list played. How writers of fiction and memoir can apply his Product Launch Formula to their lists. Strategies for determining what your assets are and how to maximize them.   Plus, his #1 tip for writers. Alice Ivyna joins me this week to talk about how to make your next book launch a success! She has a lot of information for you guys, so I recommend you get a notebook. As promised in the episode, here is a summary of the steps she takes when she publishes a new book: Include a pre-order link to the sequel (if your book is part of a series) at the end of your book. If your book is a standalone, you can link to one of your other books. Don't have the next book ready just yet? You can put a temporary cover on Amazon and set the release date far enough into the future that you don't create a problem for yourself. Simply update the listing when you have a date and have announced the cover.Do a cover, blurb, and/or title reveal 1-2 months before the book is out. This creates hype!Send your book to your Advanced Reader Copy team to ensure early reviews (and more hype!)Up to one week before publication, do a social media countdown with graphics, quotes, discounts on your other books - whatever you can think of to make it fun and engaging! These steps may not be sufficient for you and your readers (remember that everyone is different), but they're a good place to start from which you can create your own strategy.***Come join The Writing Sparrow on its very own Facebook fan page or its very own Instagram account! To find out more about Alice, check out her Instagram, her Facebook, and her website.Find out more about Sarina and her books on her website, and find her on Instagram and on Facebook.Support the show

So we've got a question here from Stacy Jagger. I am a child and family therapist in private practice. I'm somehow maintaining my income via telehealth, but this situation has scared me to death and I'm becoming willing to do something different to expand my practice. I wrote a book called the 30 day blackout last year. Was there someone here who could walk me through how to do a book funnel and help me understand how I can do group coaching? I'm really trying to wrap my head around all of this and feel like I'm having a hard time understanding it. I need a beginner's class. We went from making no money five years ago to making 225 grand a year in private practice. I'm still making about 18K a month, but this telehealth situation is creating a willingness in me to totally shift. Well, so first I went and found the book 30 day blackout, how to help your kids turn off the screen and turn to their family. And I couldn't think of a more opportune time right now for a book like this to exist. And so, I'm going to pop your question back up so I can read it. Stacy, and I'm gonna, I'm gonna pop it down real quick. So first is be careful not to knock down a bridge before you build another one. So. I feel the urgency and the feeling in your question, knowing that your telehealth is here. And your tele-health, making that number potentially could be replaced pretty quickly. But I would caution of like burning the ships. I would try to build both bridges at the same time. And so for the telehealth side, I would button up what you can and made me think about it from. How was this the new norm? What services can you provide that you haven't provided for, how can you touch people? What can you do on video that you know you couldn't do before? How can you hold people accountable and start there to make sure you're capitalizing on all of those opportunities that are there and in that creates some space, maybe outsource something. And then when you think about your book, the 30 day blackout and who could do like a book funnel and how to get to group coaching. That's a really loaded question. Like a book funnel could be 8,000 different things, but the most important thing is I would be testing the waters right now and promoting your book right to your audience or whatever you have and figuring out. Are people into that right now? Is this a problem that they're actually having to solve or are right now parents more excited about the fact that their kids are unscreened time cause they have 10 hours extra day where they're normally in school. And so make sure that like there's a need for this and those pieces and you have to dial in if your book is the entry point. Is your coaching or your escalation going to be about coaching parents on connecting with kids, creating activities, family culture, and all of those different pieces. And so I just wouldn't go so much as like, I'm going to build this whole book funnel and it's going to go to this practice. You kind of have to have a need. And figure out what that need is and insert yourself, and this is where Mike's the master. There's a problem in the market. You create a solution and then you insert yourself into it. And I don't know if there's a problem in the market for this right now, but I would say that I would focus on both button up the telehealth in the service department to where you're confident in it.You feel like you're doing everything that you can, and then utilize that free time very intentionally and methodically too. Think about where this is going to go. So your book is like a calling card. You can get feedback from people who've bought it. Like one of my favorite things, like you have a hundred customers about your book.Get on a zoom call for 15 minutes with each of them. Ask them why they bought it, what they struggled with before, how they're feeling after, and then what they want next for support. And in that you're basically going to map out the next 10 years of your business. They'll tell you what they struggled with, their pain points, just like Mike was doing the survey, but you might feel like you want to do a coaching funnel and they might be like, no. I wish you just gave me these checklists for a hundred bucks to know how to do these activities, and my kids are these printable activities, or would Rejuve run digital art classes for my kids and make sure that there's a need. That you can fill or you can create a solution for before you go create a solution that nobody might want. So that would kind of be my answer.I love the test launch. I love if you have, if you have a, an email list or an audience of any kind. I love. Launching a product that you haven't created yet, or a service, you know, it could be a monthly membership or a group or community or whatever it may be.And just seeing how many people pre-buy it. So you're going to sell it, you're going to write the sales material, sport recorded video, set up a shopping cart, give your people a discount, you know, maybe half off if they're one of the first people who joined in the first week, kind of like we just did with revenue and if nobody buys it, or very few people buy it, let's say like five people buy it. Well then you found out that it's not a good fit. There's something with the message or the product match that just isn't quite right. And you found that out before you've spent an hour building out anything, and you can just send those people a refund or whatever it may be.So for me, that's, that's kind of where I would start. George what would you suggest for her, if she's brand new to funnels and book funnels specifically? Are you thinking Russell stuff? What are you thinking. If you're going to go a funnel, the first question I ask is, what information do you need or do you want to collect to kind of move people to the next thing? And so if you have just a book as your asset right now, I would probably keep it really, really simple and I wouldn't do a free plus shipping. I would put the book up and then I would give a couple sample chapters away as kind of an opt in to build some engagement and a way to get people's attention and then maybe record a couple of videos that are parts of the book or value in the book, because you know, free plus shipping funnels were where you do that. Normally you're paying to acquire a customer in the front cause there's this very clear Ascension path of the back end to recover your ad spend and things like that that, but you kind of gotta earn the rights for those things. And so for me it's like make a dedicated landing page that talks about the books, the benefits of the books, and then maybe give people a sample of what that is like. Like give them three chapters or three chapters in two videos to walk them through how to do this as a, as a sample to get them to buy the book.Knowing that your entire intention right now is to find 100 to 500 of your ideal audience members that you can be in a relationship with. Like Mike said, to them, figure out what their needs are and to create pursue an offer and then to test it with them, make them beta members for free, get their feedback, and then you take in turn that that same funnel where now the optin would lead to, now that you've downloaded these chapters, you can buy the book, or you can buy the book and get this course and things like that. So that's how I would recommend starting, personally. In the long run, there's tons of tons of opportunity here over the long run. When you can really sit, sit down and take the next 12 months to learn these skill sets, learn what a book funnel looks like and how to build one. And there's a lot good that goes into that. But as you mentioned, this could be the beginning point to transform your business and instead of doing one on one tele sessions, this is your opportunity to do one to many and to scale it into a, into a course or books or whatever, whatever's relevant to you and your audience. So that a year from now, six months from now, nine months from now, you've now got a full product line that you can sell online and scale that to seven figures without even having to talk to anybody. So in the long run, in the medium run, that's I think, a huge opportunity for you. And if this is the catalyst that's going to help you move down that road. I think this is a great place to start. I would just suggest if you're brand new to marketing and funnels, probably start with Russell Brunson's books, you know, ClickFunnels books and things like that. That's the best information out there to really bring you up to speed on. Selling information, basically. And to just give yourself a permission slip to not be overwhelmed. Like,, entrepreneurship has iterative. Like, the reason these are opportunity times is because entrepreneurs like uncertainty cause we get to solve problems. But just one piece of advice I give everybody, you've never launched a book funnel. So what you want to be looking for is consuming information about the principles of it, not what everybody else has looked like. And so be careful not to compare your before state. To everybody's after states because you know, when Mike and I do something, we probably iterate it 500 times before you get the final result that scales. And sometimes we get lucky through experience, but there's a whole lot that goes into that. So give yourself that permission slip to kind of methodically and intentionally try things. Cause here's what I'll say, if you do it that way. You have controls. But if you're like, Oh, I launched this funnel with these upsells and these things, and I've never done it before, you really have no clue of what's working or not working. And if there's a need or demand. So just be patient, the best that you can and be intentional and methodical because that's what's gonna make a big difference. So without further ado, do not launch your book until you listen to this episode. I see so many authors sprinting towards the same energy and money trap that leaves them with a sour taste in their mouth towards publishing and millions of dollars in missed opportunity costs.

It's a scary thing to consider spending money when you are just starting out. Or even sometimes in the middle. When you aren't yet making money, it can seem crazy to SPEND money. But investing wisely can lead to greater results. I'm going to share the two main ways that you can invest as you launch your book and some things to consider as you do.  Listen to Episode 142- How to Use Paid Promotion to Launch Your Book    Subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, or your favorite podcast app! THE TWO MAIN TYPES OF PAID PROMOTION Much of this series focuses on books, but could apply to other launches, but this post will be more specifically geared toward book sales.  The two main options for paid promotions are: paid newsletter promotions (like BookBub or BookSends) paid advertisements (FB & AMS) There are lots of other ways you could advertise, but these are the two main branches that I'm going to talk about today.  PAID NEWSLETTER PROMOS Email outperforms social media for sales, period. (Read some research on that here, or listen to Tim Grahl.) If you don't have a big list, that's okay! You can use paid email promotions that utilize other companies big lists. Essentially, they spend the money to build a giant list, then they charge you to have your book featured to their big audience.  Things to consider: Do you need reviews or other requirements? Does it break down into specific genres?  What is the cost? What do other authors say?  Does the book have to be live to set up the promotion?  How far in advance are they booked up? (Some are booked up for months in advance) Is it email or is it a social media post?  Before paying for any of these promotions, I asked other authors which sites they personally had luck using. Not everyone agrees, but it's a good idea to ask people, not just see reviews. I also tested and found which ones seemed to work well for my books and tracked those daily sales with a spreadsheet so I could know which ones to try again.    Kindlepreneur's List of 127 Promo Sites Reedsy's List of Promo Sites      PAID ADVERTISEMENTS The biggest of these are Amazon Services Ads (formerly known as AMS ads, now just AS ads) and Facebook Ads. Many people have found success with these kinds of ads, but the downside is that you have to either learn the skill and platform, or hire someone.  Things to consider:  Do you have time to learn something new?  Do you have the money to test?  Do you see other authors in your niche having results?  TIP: Now you can go to a page and see what ads that person has run. You won't see the effectiveness, but can see the image they used, their copy, and any interactions on the post.    Kindlepreneur Free Amazon Ads course    Test, but ask others what works Pay for the ones with ROI - email! It's not always about the money you make back, but what it gets you. ROI, but with a grain of salt because visibility matters to your ranking, KU page reads, people reading through to other books. Some people have a formula for this, but it makes my head spin, so I can't even. SO HOW DO YOU CHOOSE WHICH KIND OF PAID PROMO?  Difference between running ads and paid NL promos. Both risky, esp if you're trying them for the first time, but ads tend to have more risk. With an NL, if you ask for reputable suggestions, people will tell you. Doesn't mean you'll get what you want or hope for, but often it's easier than trying to figure out the right audience to target on FB ads or how to bid on BookBub ads or what the heck with AMS, or AS ads. Conclusion: Invest and Test The biggest thing is that you're going to have to invest. Invest in your own growth of newsletter. Invest in ads for your books. Invest in the things that make your book succeed, like a great cover and time to write well. Test what you can and track your sales and pagereads and rankings on Amazon. You can't always get this down to a science, but you can get a good idea of what works for you and what doesn't.

In the last post I shared a simple book launch framework. Now I want to break down some of the specifics related to promotion, because this is where people really struggle. Because this is a huge topic, this post focuses on getting other people to share your work. Having other people share your work? Well, that sounds smarmy. Isn't this the blog and podcast all about NOT being smarmy? Yes. Yes it is. But there is a way to ask others to share your work that is NOT smarmy. I heavily rely on other people sharing my fiction books for Emma St. Clair, and I've built some amazing relationships along the way. I'm going to break this down a bit, but if you want more on how to work well with others in non-smarmy ways, you should really check out Creative Collaborations. Yeah, I'm plugging my book. But literally, that's what the book is about. So if you want more... get it.   It sounds simple to say that you should ask people to share for you. But if you're starting out and aren't sure how to do this, it sounds weird and gross, like those 100 emails I get every day from strangers asking me to add this super relevant link to my blog post! (Nope.)  The two main ways to do this are:  simply asking people that you have a relationship with (including newsletter swaps) having an affiliate program for your thing Let's go a little deeper into the details so you can put this into action! But first... a few quick reminders. If you didn't already check out the first part of How to Launch Your Book, you should do that. I'll give you a summary of the three main kinds of promotion:  sharing with your people (email, social media, etc) asking other people to share with their people (what this post is talking about!) paying for ads and promos Clearly, we are focusing on part two. But I'll go back to part one and also we'll look at ads and promos in the future. (If you want a head start on email lists, you can check out my email list resources!)  YOUR MINDSET ABOUT PROMOTION Also before we start, let's get your head right. If you hate thinking about promotion and marketing, you need a mindset shift. Stop thinking of this in those terms if you don't like them.  Marketing and promotion is basically YOU connecting with your ideal audience and readers. Don't you want to do that? Don't you want to get emails from people saying they loved your book and your course and think you are the best thing ever? Don't you want people joining your email list after they read your great blog post? Don't you want to know that readers were up all night reading your book?  Marketing and promotion are just fancy words for you finding your ideal people who want your stuff. Doesn't that sound much better, albeit less fancy?
