Let's talk about digital identity with Oscar Santolalla, Ann Cavoukian and Katryna Dow. In this latest episode within the Identity Story Series, Ann Cavoukian, creator of Privacy by Design and Katryna Dow, CEO at Meeco, join Oscar to explore the road to becoming ISO 31700 for Privacy by Design. They discuss the importance of Privacy by Design and how it can help organisations protect their customers' personal data and comply with data protection regulations and the impact of Privacy by Design becoming an ISO Standard. [Transcript below] “If you don't have a strong foundation of security from end to end with full lifecycle protection, you're not going to have any privacy.” ~ Ann Cavoukian Dr Ann Cavoukian is recognised as one of the world's leading privacy experts. Dr Cavoukian served an unprecedented three terms as the Information & Privacy Commissioner of Ontario, Canada. There she created Privacy by Design, a framework that seeks to proactively embed privacy into the design specifications of information technologies, networked infrastructure and business practices, thereby achieving the strongest protection possible. In 2010, International Privacy Regulators unanimously passed a Resolution recognising Privacy by Design as an International Standard. Since then, PbD has been translated into 40 languages! In 2018, PbD was included in a sweeping new law in the EU: the General Data Protection Regulation. Dr Cavoukian is now the Executive Director of the Global Privacy & Security by Design Centre. She is also a Senior Fellow of the Ted Rogers Leadership Centre at Ryerson University, and a Faculty Fellow of the Centre for Law, Science & Innovation at the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law at Arizona State University. Listen to Episode 73, where Ann joined the podcast to discuss Privacy by Design, and connect with Ann on LinkedIn. “One of the really challenging things about privacy and security is if you don't bake it in at the lower layers, if you don't build that foundation, it's really hard to go back and put it into a product or service afterwards.” ~ Katryna Dow Katryna Dow is the founder and CEO of Meeco; a personal data & distributed ledger platform that enables people to securely exchange data via the API-of-Me with the people and organisations they trust. Katryna has been pioneering personal data rights since 2002, when she envisioned a time when personal sovereignty, identity and contextual privacy would be as important as being connected. Now within the context of GDPR and Open Banking, distributed ledger, cloud, AI and IoT have converged to make Meeco both possible and necessary. Find out more about Meeco at meeco.me. For the past three years, Katryna has been named as one of the Top 100 Identity Influencers. She is the co-author of the blockchain identity paper ‘Immutable Me' and co-author/co-architect of Meeco's distributed ledger solution and technical White Paper on Zero Knowledge Proofs for Access, Control, Delegation and Consent of Identity and Personal Data. Katryna speaks globally on digital rights, privacy and data innovation. Listen to Episode 30, where Katryna joined the podcast to discuss Data minimisation, and connect with Katryna on LinkedIn.

The way to ensure the most secure cyber future is to stay ahead of tomorrow's threats, no matter what the current laws and regulations dictate. Tech moves faster than the law – and hackers work faster than both. That's why Jody R. Westby, CEO of Global Cyber Risk LLC, and Katryna Dow, founder and CEO of personal data platform Meeco, urge businesses to be smart and proactive when crafting their cybersecurity protections. Listen as they talk about how businesses can protect themselves and their customers, the critical areas of businesses to safeguard ahead of time, using security as a competitive advantage, and much more. Key Takeaways: [2:20] Katryna wanted an equitable data ecosystem where everyday people would have a bit more control over how their data would be used, and who would have access to it. She started Meeco, or the me-ecosystem-as a way to build an infrastructure of personal data ecosystems. [5:50] Jody realized we needed strong cybersecurity protections put in place so that critical infrastructure data couldn't be used against us. [6:24] Technology has been moving faster than the laws, and Silicon Valley and tech companies have embraced the mantra to beg for forgiveness rather than ask for permission. [7:04] The absence of clear and uniform legislation around cybersecurity and data protection has some pressing implications. First, businesses need to come up with their own ways to protect themselves and their customers. [10:07] What is a self-sovereign identity or SSI? Katryna talks about the move to SSI's profound impact on the security and efficiency of power tech's operations. [12:22] Jody says we will start seeing exclusions for paying ransomware for what they think are nation-state-sponsored attacks, and that will leave companies a lot more vulnerable. However, we have to pay attention to the three most important areas that also are the lowest scoring areas in any risk assessment: asset management, incident response, and business continuity. [14:02] The GDPR or General Data Protection Regulation is the EU data privacy and security law. [20:15] Some companies are listening to what customers really want, and it's making a big impact. For example, when Apple let iPhone users say yes or no to being tracked, Facebook had the largest drop in shareholder stock value in one day. [23:52] Operations leaders should not wait for the worst-case scenario to happen before they start protecting their companies and customers from potential harm. Quotes: "We are in a whole new ballgame right now, and companies are really at risk. We're not prepared.” - Jody [0:40] “In a data-driven world, there's a lot of data that's been collected about me that could actually be enhanced by data from me.” - [5:03] Katryna “The bottom line is when they realize that they've got their stock price and the viability of the company on the line, they'll get more attention to this topic. And that's what we need because companies do not have robust full cybersecurity programs.” - Jody [12:22] “Do you want to be helping customers have better digital experiences? Or do you want to wait until you're forced to do that?” - [20:50] Katryna “Let's not wait for the worst-case scenario to happen before we start protecting ourselves, our companies and our customers from potential harm. Whether it comes through satellites, a third-party supplier, or your own organization, these threats exist, and with more points of entry to our systems than ever before, they're clearly multiplying. [24:35] - Francis “With disruption being the new normal in OPS, the time to up your cybersecurity game is now because the choice going forward is clear. You can either stay put and pay the price…or you can evolve.” [25:16] - Francis Continue on your journey: pega.com/podcast Mentioned: Jody Westby Meeco

Description: Welcome to lucky episode number 13! Your new host Aubrey Turner, Executive Advisor at Ping, is thrilled to welcome Katryna Dow, CEO & Founder of the award-winning data platform Meeco. Katryna discusses Meeco's mission to enable everyone on the planet access to equity and value in exchange for the data and information they share. She talks about why she saw a need for Meeco's services, what we need to know as we approach a more “physigital”world, and how her vision all started with a Tom Cruise film. Key Takeaways: [1:34] Katryna talks about her journey of founding Meeco, and how she was inspired by Tom Cruise's movie Minority Report. In early 2012 she sat down and wrote a Manifesto, and asked the question: what would happen if everyday people had the power to make really good decisions on data, the way that social networks, government, and enterprise do? How can we create meaningful value and make better decisions with our data? [8:12] Katryna shares some of her concerns around modern privacy and where she sees things evolving, both good and bad. [9:35] Technology is neutral. It's what we do with it that gives it bias and can make it either creepy or cool. [11:33] What does Katryna mean when she says it starts with trust by design? [17:22] The next wave may be just starting to bring people and things into the direct value chain, through wearables or IoT devices for example. [18:31] How can we create better digital onboarding for employees, knowing that even post-COVID-19 our world will not go back to how it was in December 2020? One thing that Katryna is sure of is that we must lean into innovation rather than doing nothing and waiting to see. [36:13] We must make sure we are paying attention to the misalignment between law and technology, especially when it comes to ethics and the safety of children growing up in a digital-forward world. Quotes: “I think the challenge for any kind of technology and regulation is a lag factor, not a lead factor.”—Katryna “The line between creepy and cool is one of the things we are always trying to address from a technology point of view.”—Katryna “There isn't really the option to not find better ways of digitally engaging.”—Katryna Mentioned in This Episode: PingIdentity AubreyTurner KatrynaDow Meeco “HowCOVID-19 has pushed companies over the technology tipping point—and transformed business forever”

Find out more on our website: https://bit.ly/32G8tT3 We're on track towards a world where everything can be tokenized. Tokenization plays a critical part in enabling more equitable value creation for people, organisations and things. Providing the means to issue and store value, trace provenance, and most importantly achieve consensus to instantly trust. In order for this tokenized world to emerge we will need the infrastructure for people and their digital twins to participate. This will include digital identity, verifiable credentials and payments. Since 2012, Meeco has been pioneering the collection, protection and value exchange of personal data and identity. Over the past year we have been working towards making much of this possible, and this webinar will feature some of the use-cases and practical steps along the way. Speaker: Katryna Dow is the founder and CEO of Meeco; a personal data & distributed ledger platform that enables people to securely exchange data via the API-of-Me with the people and organisations they trust. Katryna has been consecutively named as one of the Top 100 Identity Influencers. She is a founding member of The Council of Extended Intelligence (CXI), a joint initiative between the IEEE Standards Association and MIT Media Lab. She served on two IEEE standards working groups; Co-Chair for the Personal Data and Privacy Committee, part of the Global Initiative for Ethical Considerations in the Design of Autonomous Systems, and Chair for the new P7006 - Standard for Personal Data Artificial Intelligence (AI) Agent. In January 2020 she joined the MyData Board as a Director with a strategic focus is on jurisdictional approaches to personal data rights and business models. In late 2020 Katryna joined Data Sovereignty Now, as Meeco's representative to advocate for standards and soft infrastructure to enable a more equitable European digital economy. Prior to Meeco she founded and operated a strategy consulting practice, with extensive global experience in strategy to execution roles in start-ups to major corporate change and implementation and projects. Katryna has held leadership positions and delivered projects in the United Kingdom, Europe, Asia, United States and India. Her industry sector experience includes information technology, financial services, health services and human resources. Katryna currently splits her time between Australia, Belgium and the UK, where Meeco has offices and development teams.

Sally’s most recent book, How Women Rise, co-authored with legendary executive coach Marshall Goldsmith, examines the behaviors most likely to get in the way of successful women. It became the top-seller in its field within a week of publication, and rights have been sold in 15 languages. Previous books include The Female Advantage: Women’s Ways of Leadership, hailed as the classic in its field and continuously in print since 1990, and The Female Vision: Women’s Real Power at Work, which explores how women’s strategic insights can strengthen their careers. The Web of Inclusion: A New Architecture for Building Great Organizations was cited in The Wall Street Journal as one of the best books on leadership of all time and is credited with bringing the language of inclusion into business. Let's Talk About Digital Identity with Katryna Dow, founder and CEO of Meeco. Katryna talks to Oscar about her career (including inspiration from Minority Report), Meeco's personal data & distributed ledger platform, the importance of data minimisation to inspire trust in organisations, and cultural differences in attitudes towards digital identity. "The greatest way to overcome this privacy paradox is transparency." "Where regulators have moved to increase the data transparency and data rights of individuals, these need to actually be part of the solution architecture." Katryna Dow is the founder and CEO of Meeco; a personal data & distributed ledger platform that enables people to securely exchange data via the API-of-Me with the people and organisations they trust. She is the co-author of the blockchain identity paper ‘Immutable Me’ and co-author/co-architect of Meeco’s distributed ledger solution and technical White Paper on Zero Knowledge Proofs for Access, Control, Delegation and Consent of Identity and Personal Data. Part 2 in the GDPR mini series: implementing GDPR in your work Last month we talked about the basics of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). In this episode we focus on the specific impact on content strategy and UX. Because the GDPR will change the web, but also our work. Not only how we process personal data, but also how we ask for it will change. People need to be able to view, edit and delete their data. And then there are our research practices. Even those are impacted by the GDPR. If you are 'new' to all things GDPR, please listen to episode 1 first. Episode 2 will make much more sense that way. Also check out the accompanying blogpost to episode 1 for links to the full GDPR text, some helpful info sources and an overview of the basic principles of GDPR. Note: the audiofile may take about 30 seconds to load. You can also find this episode and subscribe to the podcast in your favorite podcast app. Overview of the steps to take Check with your company where you stand with GDPR compliancy, find the taskforce, let them know you are here to help. Dig up your privacy policy and test it for transparency. Make it more readable, understandable, better. Map out the data streams like user journeys. What does it mean for communication through your design and content? Check whether the tools you use for testing are GDPR compliant. If necessary, find new ones. Design a beautiful flow for the user to view, edit or retract their data. Join the conversation - here, at meetups, conferences, on Twitter, the content & UX Slack - and share your findings, cases and best practices. Meet our 5 experts Bart Van den Brande - Sirius Legal Bart Van den Brande is a lawyer at Sirius Legal. He specialises in GDPR and helps his clients in complying to the GDPR. Clovis Six - Internet Architects In his UX research and UX design work at Internet Architects, Clovis already encountered some GDPR related issues. In this episode he provides a comprehensive overview of how to implement good GDPR practices in your work. Katryna Dow - Meeco Katryna Dow is the founder and CEO of Meeco: a platform that enables people to share the information they want to share with organisations they trust, in order to get better, more personalised service and relevant offers. Aral Balkan - Ind.ie Aral Balkan is an amazing public speaker, a cyborg rights activist, co-founder of ethical software company Ind.ie and part of the DiEM initiative. He has a strong opinion on privacy as a human right. Copy of Copy of Seppe Van Steelant - City of Ghent As the Data Protection Officer (DPO) at the City of Ghent, Seppe Van Steelant plays a vital role in the transition of gent.be and mijngent.be into GDPR compliant platforms.
Part 1 in the GDPR mini series: a primerWhether you're in Europe or not: the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will have a great impact on businesses everywhere. Because even if you're outside of Europe, when you find yourself handling personal data of a European citizen (even if you're based outside the EU), you have to comply with the strict GDPR rules. GDPR?The General Data Protection Regulation is a very strict privacy protocol installed by the European Commision, the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union. It will prohibit companies from asking for data they don’t need, and from storing and using private data in a non-compliant way. The fines for non-compliance are substantial. Even if you’re not in Europe, you could theoretically get a penalty for not complying. But even if you don't, not playing by the rules will cost you your European B2B customers. Is the end of data harvesting near? And what does this mean for content and UX? That's what we discuss in this month's podcast.COOKIE CONSENT WAS JUST A TASTER, GET READY FOR THE MAIN COURSE. EXTRA BACKGROUND ON THE GDPRTHE 6 principles of privacyLawfulness, fairness and transparency Private data should only be used by organisations in a lawful and fair way. It should be crystal clear to the user how their personal data will be processed. Purpose limitationsOrganisations are only allowed to use the consensually obtained data for the goals they communicated at the time of the transaction. They can no longer take a database and use it for purposes other or unrelated to what was communicated to the user.Data minimisationOrganisations can only ask for the information that is essential for their service. Profiling or marketing are (most of the time) not essential for servicing the client.AccuracyInformation has to be straightforwardly interpreted and not out of date. It should be rectifiable by the user. Storage limitationsPersonal data can only be stored for a few years, and only in a secure file or document, on a secure server that is physically in Europe. Integrity and confidentialityPrivate data should be stored and processed in a way that the data is protected from loss, destruction or damage.Consent is king, transparency is queen The magic word in the new GDPR regulations is ‘consent’. As an organisation, you need to get consent of the user, or 'data subject' in GDPR terms, that is...Informed: they need to know what they’re consenting to.Freely given: you can’t force someone to give their data to use your service.Specific: they are only agreeing to what you are specifically saying they are agreeing to.Unambiguous: just like in other cases where you need consent: consent is a clear yes, not the absence of a no.Privacy by design and Privacy by defaultPrivacy by Design is about the whole engeneering process of a service. It takes privacy into account at every step. We also describe this as value sensitive design, in which human values are taken into account, in a well-defined maner throughout the whole process. Privacy by Default: all the privacy settings are set to optimal privacy. You will be asked for consent when prompted for personal details. Also, only the bare minimum will be asked for. Privacy by Default can be seen as a subset of Privacy by design.Meet our 5 experts Aral Balkan - Ind.ie Aral Balkan is a cyborg rights activist, one third of ethical software company Ind.ie and part of the DiEM initiative. In all these roles, he passionately strives for a better, safer and more democratic web. Clovis Six - Internet Architects Clovis Six is a UX researcher at Internet Architects, and one of my favourite people to work with. After dealing with some GDPR related issues for his clients, he decided to specialise in the matter. He inspired me to make this podcast and helped out in shaping it. (Thanks buddy!) Katryna Dow - Meeco I met Katryna Dow at a professional event on data. Personal data is at the core of what Katryna's company Meeco does. I’m curious to learn how the GDPR will affect her business. Seppe Van Steelant - City of Ghent Government is one example of organisations that own loads of private data. Seppe Van Steelant is the Data Protection Officer (DPO) at the City of Ghent. Bart Van den Brande - Sirius Legal With only one year to go until GDPR goes into full effect, this seems like a good time to lawyer up! So that’s what we did. Meet Bart Van den Brande at Sirius Legal.
