Come see us live in London June 22nd: https://bigbellycomedy.club/event/lions-led-by-donkeys-podcast-live-big-fat-festival-southbank/ A conflict breaks out between a newly independent Mexico and a newly back-to-having-kings France. It culminates in a small series of armed incursions and blockades in 1838-39. Did it start because of an aggrieved French baker? Did Napoleon's armies advance the science of military optics because their commander wanted to look at feet? In this episode (the first one where Nate has researched, written, and hosted), we get to the bottom of the semi-apocryphal Pastry War. Sources: Atwater, James D.; Ruiz, Ramon Eduardo. Slaves and Slavery in Texas Part 2 - After the Anglos Arrive This is Episode 49 – Slaves and Slavery in Texas Part 2 - After the Anglos Arrive.  I'm your host and guide Hank Wilson. And as always, brought to you by Ashby Navis and Tennyson Media Publishers, producers of  a comprehensive catalog of  audiobooks and high-quality games, productivity, and mental health apps. Visit AshbyNavis.com for more information. In this episode I'm going to continue my discussion about a topic that often makes some folks a tad uncomfortable and that's because I'm going to talk about slaves and slavery in Texas. In the last episode, I focused on slavery in what we call New Spain. That is the territories that were colonized by the Spanish in the 1500s up through the mid to early1800s. Slavery was a fact of life in the Spanish colonies, and then after Mexico declared their independence from Spain in 1810, and a rebel congress took control. In 1813 under the leadership of Father José María Morelos, they met at Chilpancingo  they declared an end to slavery and to the casta or class system in New Spain. Now we have no records of whether or not the declaration of the Congress of Chilpancingo ever reached Texas. Mexico achieved independence in 1821 and there were still about 3,000 slaves in the country and a several of those lived in Texas. In the summer of 1822, the new Mexican congress met and established a constitutional government for the nation. That congress quickly set out to promote the ideals of Chilpancingo and on September 17 issued a law abolishing racial categorization in official documents. In a correspondence to the city council of San Antonio, Father Refugio de la Garza, a native Texan who represented the province in which he referred to the new social and political relations of the Spanish regime: “all that is over. We are all equal, and without this equality, our rights would not be inviolate and sacred.”  After that date, Texas census reports drop all mention of casta data, showing that Mexico's leaders accepted the new “race-free” society. However, slavery still existed and the fact that it did caused race relations to take a new and dangerous direction for Mexican and Spanish residents of Texas, with the arrival of the Anglo-American settlers in the course of the 1820s. For the most part, those early settlers had roots in the deep south and brought with them  their prejudices and social customs. One of those customs was slavery. While Mexicans generally objected to slavery, especially as it was allowed and implemented in the United State, many politicians turned a blind eye to the system. They were eager to profit from the production of cotton that Texans produced. Steven F. Austin, said, “The primary product that will elevate us from poverty is cotton and we cannot do this without the help of slaves.”  As a result, Anglo-Americans where able to bring their family slaves with them to Texas. Until 1840, they were also allowed to buy and sell them. One concession the Anglos made was to agree that the Grandchildren of those original slaves would eventually be gradually freed upon reaching certain ages. When, in1827, the provincial government hinted it might emancipate slaves earlier, many of the immigrants made their slaves sign indenture contracts binding them for ninety-nine years. This was ostensibly to work off the purchase price, upkeep, and transportation to Texas of the slaves. Mexican officials thought of this as the same as the tradition of debt peonage, and as a result Black slaves continued to arrive in Texas. As the 1820s came to a close, the most serious threat to Anglo slaveholders took place when on September 15th, 1829, Mexico President Vicente Ramón Guerrero, in commemoration of Mexican Independence, emancipated all slaves. The powerful friends that Austin had in Mexico's government quickly secured an exemption from the law for Texas and slavery was permitted to continue in the province.

Big-time boxing is back on Saturday night as Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez takes on Edgar Berlanga at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Alvarez lighting up Vegas on Mexican Independence weekend has become very familiar over the years and this one could have a very familiar outcome, with Canelo (60-2-2) a best price of 1/12 (as short as 1/25) to prevail. Billi (@SGPSoccer) breaks down the all the odds and tries to find some value in the market, with Canelo being such a short favourite. The episode then moves onto looking at fight between Erislandy Lara and Danny Garcia on the Canelo undercard and then closes out by looking at tonight's UFC 306 main event, where Sean O'Malley defends his bantamweight title against Merab Dvalishvili at the Sphere in Las Vegas.  JOIN the SGPN community #DegensOnlyExclusive Merch, Contests and Bonus Episodes ONLY on Patreon - https://sg.pn/patreonDiscuss with fellow degens on Discord - https://sg.pn/discordDownload The Free SGPN App - https://sgpn.appCheck out the Sports Gambling Podcast on YouTube - https://sg.pn/YouTubeCheck out our website - http://sportsgamblingpodcast.comSUPPORT us by supporting our partnersPromo code FOOTBALL - 10% off everything http://sg.pn/storeUnderdog Fantasy code SGPN - Up to $1000 in BONUS CASH - https://play.underdogfantasy.com/p-sgpnFootball Contest Proxy - Use promo code SGP to save $50 at - http://proxy.footballcontest.comRithmm - Player Props and Picks - Free 7 day trial! http://sportsgamblingpodcast.com/rithmmGametime code SGPN - Download the Gametime app, create an account, and use code SGPN for $20 off your first purchase - https://gametime.co/OddsJam - 7-day free trial and 35% off your first month subscription promo code SGPN - https://fas.st/t/yaJkJgH132 NFL Team Previews - https://www.sportsgamblingpodcast.com/2024-nfl-team-previews/  ADVERTISE with SGPNInterested in advertising? In Stormy Passage: Mexico from Colony to Republic, 1750-1850 (Rowman & Littlefield, 2022), Eric Van Young draws on four decades of extraordinary scholarship on colonial and nineteenth-century Mexico to capture the crucial hundred years of the country's transition from a Spanish colony to a modernized, independent nation. From the colonial twilight and the Bourbon Reforms to the wars of insurgency and independence from 1810-1821, from the consummation of independence to the instability, struggles, and tragic losses of the early Republican era, Van Young's social, economic, and political survey of an overlooked span of events provides a rare general history for English language readers. Stormy Passage is sure to become a benchmark text for students and scholars of Mexican history. Eric Van Young is Distinguished Professor of History at the University of California, San Diego. He has published countless academic essays and reviews and is the author of several books, including Hacienda and Market in Eighteenth Century Mexico: The Rural Economy of the Guadalajara Region, 1675-1810 (University of California Press, 1981), The Other Rebellion: Popular Violence, Ideology, and the Struggle for Mexican Independence, 1810-1821 (Stanford University Press 2001), Writing Mexican History (Stanford University Press, 2012), and A Life together: Lucas Alamán and Mexico, 1792-1853 (Yale University Press, 2021). In addition to these authored works, he has edited and introduced several collected editions on Mexican history which have been published in English and Spanish. At about that same time, large numbers of Americans began settling in Mexico, both legally and illegally. ¿Qué tal...? I am back (@nnnimzaj) after almost a year of so much life, state, and national desmadre that has taken place. All of which ultimately hindered me from being able to create for the podcast. I had recorded so many episodes and had many amazing conversations, but I couldn't find myself to sit down to edit or even start thinking about that process because of how depleted emotionally, mentally and physically I was. This past year I finally graduated from College, I've been doing a lot of community based work with local organizations, and committing more time for inner healing work within myself. I always want to show up to any space as myself as genuine, honest, understanding and loving as possible. That's the environment I want to hold for this podcast and anyone that listens to it because I am a complex and sometimes confused mf that is trying to live and not just survive around other people that deserve the same. Soooo on today's episode I am joined by my dearest best friend Kaelyn as we get in to some art, agency, and talking through our "identities" to ring in Mexican Independence day. So grab a blunt, grab a drink and come get in to it with us! (Keep up with us on our socials @chicxswhochill @nnnimzaj @kaelyn_andrade).

Instead, it’s meant to commemorate the Battle of Puebla, which was fought between the Mexican and French armies in 1862. Outnumbered Mexican troops defeated the invading French forces of Napoleon III...Over the years, the celebration has evolved from one of military victory to a celebration of Mexican culture.

Personalities of traditional cuisine and Mexican haute cuisine will be present to participate in this unprecedented event that aims to collaborate in the rescue, safeguarding and promotion of Traditional Mexican Cuisine as a Cultural Heritage of Humanity, as part of the Action Plan committed with UNESCO.100 Years of Tex Mex FoodThe popularity of Mexican cuisine has led to the emergence of several variations of this cuisine in other countries. The Tex-Mex cuisine evolved in Texas-Mexico in Southwest America, and is a modification of traditional cuisine with an unusual American touch to it. One of the best examples of the Tex-Mex cuisine is the ‘refried beans', which is a term that has actually been coined in Texas, and is the translation of the Mexican term ‘Frijoles refritos'. The Tex-Mex cuisine is however quite different from original Mexican cuisine, even though it might include the same ingredients to a certain extent. Similarly, there also exists a ‘New Mexican Cuisine', a type of regional cuisine originating from the state of New Mexico in USA and in southern Colorado, and is a subset of Mexican-American cuisine.FOR MORE INFORMATION VISIT : https://mexicodemilsabores.com/

In 7th grade Texas history textbooks, Bernardo Gutiérrez de Lara figures only peripherally in the events covered in this series. In reality, he may have been the great unifying figure for the Tejano, Native American, and Americans volunteers marching across Texas in the fall of 1812. Texas Governor Manuel Salcedo certainly took notice of his movements and rode out to ambush the revolutionary commander on the road to San Antonio in October 1812. It would be Gutiérrez de Lara, however, who had a surprise in store for Salcedo. The research team takes to the air to look for the “canyon” chosen by Republicans to later ambush the Royalist Army before the Battle of Medina.

Spanish Royalists responded to San Antonio's 1813 Declaration of Independence by massacring the Republican Army of the North and by implementing a deliberate policy of terror against San Antonio's civilians, summarily executing almost three hundred of San Antonio's leading men while forcing their wives, daughters, and mothers to slave away on behalf of the soldiers murdering their loved ones. No community in New Spain suffered the way that San Antonio did for Mexican Independence, and it remains the bloodiest episode in Texas history. CORRECTION: Although the location of the Battle of Medina is not precisely known, it appears to have occurred further east than I describe it in this episode, somewhere on the northern edge of Atascosa County where the sandy, oak-rich "Encinal de Medina" transitions into more open plains.

You would think that following in the footsteps of Auguste Escoffier, Henry Braddock and César Ritz would be daunting, well, not for Anna Sebastian. Under her watchful eye as its Senior Bar Manager, The Savoy’s Beaufort Bar has continued to flourish since the day it opened in 2010. Download the audio There really should be only one way to enter The Savoy – by taxi. It’s the closest to experiencing how the swells might have felt at the turn of the 20th Century, when it was first built. Driving in on the right-hand side (American!), your chauffeur or the doorman would help you exit without having to go around the cab, all thanks to a special Act of Parliament. [caption id="attachment_7503" align="alignleft" width="417"] Photo Source: Beaufort Bar[/caption] Still, as much as hopping back in time sounds exciting, there would have been no Beaufort Bar to make your local. After a three-year long restoration and refurbishment of the entire hotel, it opened to great fanfare on October 10, 2010 at 10:10. The Beaufort Bar was born that evening. The sun may have gone down, but, every night the lights switch on in this evening-only drinking establishment and the drinks pop-up. I use this term because the menu is literally a Pop-Up Book specifically created for the Beaufort Bar. Fifteen hand-crafted cocktails make up the menu, including “character” cocktails dedicated to the famed entertainers and icons who walked the halls of this venerable hotel.  You must watch this video to see the creation of this unique menu. [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OKA4P564SJE&feature=youtu.be[/embed] Anna Sebastian, who joins us today on Best Sips, reigns supreme over this hallowed spot. Under her watchful eye, the Beaufort Bar was awarded the title, Best International Hotel Bar in 2015 by Tales of the Cocktail, the world’s annual premier cocktail festival in New Orleans. This year, Anna herself was also nominated for Bar Personality of the Year 2016 at Imbibe Live, Europe’s largest drinks conference. Anna explains that she “didn't know that the hospitality industry really existed at this level - I didn't know you could travel the world, deal with such an eclectic mix of guests as well as create something and be part of history in so many ways.” You can see why I was so excited to be sitting down with her to talk about The Beaufort Bar and how she found herself a part of its venerated history, before making me the bar’s most Instagrammable cocktail: The Impressionist, inspired by Claude Monet's stay in the hotel during his time in London in the late 1800's. Make sure you pop on down to see the pop-up menu before the new year is out! Then return often to catch the new menu hot off the presses.   WHERE YOU CAN HEAR ME DRINKING NEXT: Up next week, we toast to Mexican Independence with a glass of 100% agave tequila, thanks to Nicci Stringfellow, UK brand ambassador to Casa Herradura, one of Mexico’s most historic and renowned tequila producers!
