I've known Jane Mogel since we were freshman in college—50 years!!! And her smart, funny, charming husband, Peter Pitts for almost as long. I went to their wedding in the mid 80's. Jane has a successful business as an interior designer and Peter has a global trotting business as the co-founder of the Center for Medicine in the Public Interest. His research, reporting and public appearances range from the New York Times to The Daily Show with John Stewart. Though I don't usually have close friends on, (I'm trying to be a real shrink, remember?!!), I make an exception here so Jane and I can exchange some college stories and we can talk about Jane and Peter's parenting adventures with their two boys, Jeremy and Ben, now both in their mid-thirties and doing well. Jane would invite me to stay with her family in New York City in the later 70's and her parents were a big influence on me. They were very sophisticated for a young person like me and they opened my mind to a lot of new things. Her father, Len Mogel was the publisher of the National Lampoon in it's heyday, so some fun stories from that time too. I moved to the East Village right after college and Jane had her own place in the city by then, so we had a lot of fun running around NYC in those years too!
Summary:In this engaging and forward-thinking conversation, Bart Berkey sits down with Adam Mogelonsky, a hospitality consultant specializing in luxury hotels. Adam shares his deep knowledge on future trends, wellness, and how hotels must evolve to meet the demands of new generations. They discuss how hotels can offer more than just premium service—they must anticipate trends, integrate holistic wellness, and rethink traditional offerings to stay ahead of the curve.Adam also reveals how demographic shifts, changing consumer expectations, and longevity science will reshape luxury hospitality. The conversation touches on everything from intermittent fasting and biohacking to regenerative tourism and how hotels can create "constellations of trends" rather than linear improvements. All Organizations Must Think 5-10 Years Ahead Most luxury hotels already know service and hospitality inside out. What they need is future-proofing—insights into trends that will shape guest preferences in the next decade. Younger generations prioritize health, sustainability, and personalization, which will push hotels to evolve beyond traditional offerings like extravagant breakfasts and standard wellness amenities. Wellness is More Than Just Yoga Mats & Filtered Water True wellness experiences go beyond token gestures like yoga mats and infused water. They need scientific backing, innovation, and personalization. Future wellness offerings may include biometric tracking, AI-driven fitness guidance, structured water, longevity-focused cuisine, and in-room recovery technology. The Future is Experience-Driven & Science-Backed Travelers are looking for transformative experiences, not just a place to stay. Hotels that integrate holistic health, regenerative tourism, and personalized well-being solutions will lead the industry. A great example is Babylonstoren in South Africa, a resort that offers immersive culinary farming, regenerative wellness, and hands-on guest experiences—a model for the future of hospitality.Adam challenges us to think critically: Are we designing hotels (and our own lives) for today, or for the future? The answer will determine which brands, experiences, and people thrive in the years ahead.SPONSORSHIP:Thank you to our sponsor: Wellevate Experienceshttps:https://kellybishopwellevateexperience.comThe overall goal of Wellevate Experiences is to bring a sense of wellness and positive mental well-being to the events, hospitality, and travel industry and provide an understanding of the emotion and impact to Pick Positive and practice Self-Love.

Obiskali smo tudi festival generativne umetnosti Adela, govorili z gostujočim umetnikom, nizozemskim "medijskim arheologom" Joostom Rekveldom, in ocenili najzanimivejši film s trenutnega kinosporeda: Naključnega morilca Richarda Linklaterja.
Priznanja so prejeli Matevž Remškar, Urška Todosovska Šmajdek ter Irena in Mirko Cigula. Vabljeni k poslušanju!

Larry Mogelonsky is the most prolific author on hospitality with over 1000 articles published over the last decade, and six books, including the latest two, Hotel Mogel and More Hotel Mogel, which is on my desk now, and I highly recommend it. A few quotes from our chat:About traveling for inspiration, before Covid, Larry and his brilliant wife Maureen traveled 30% of the time and tried to visit over 35 new hotels each year. “The goal in going to a new property any property for or from my standpoint is learning what is it that this hotel is doing that is new or unique or different that can be applied to other hotels to either to improve revenue, improve loyalty, improve guest satisfaction, or create a new experience” “There is so much we can learn from each other so many opportunities so we can take advantage of to enhance how we operate how we live and importantly how we as hoteliers can do our job better and it represents another one of those seismic shifts which are going to change how we look at hotels, and importantly how hoteliers look at their guests.” About the Guest Forward Concept: “It's all about you- the guest. It's not about us. We are going to take care of you as best we can within the facility that we have. No, we haven't put in the fastest elevators, and the world's thickest mattresses, and the world's largest bathrooms, because that doesn't matter to you. Ultimately, what matters to you is, do you feel comfortable. What matters is that the guest feels good about being there and if you do that, that will be reflected in the reviews very quickly.” “The flip side is don't pay attention don't do anything don't handle reviews people start to get surly and nasty and you don't care and watch what happens to your ADR your revenue and your percent occupancy and your staff who won't be happy because guests are not happy and the spiral will spin downward very quickly.” Larry is also the Managing Director of Hotel Mogel Consulting. https://www.hotelmogel.com/about/ Adele Gutman can be reached at https://www.adelegutman.com/

In 1977 Leonard Mogel began publishing a dark, illustrated, steampunk, and somewhat erotic science fiction and fantasy magazine called Heavy Metal, and in 1981 an adult animated sci-fi fantasy film by the same name was produced by Mogel and Ivan Reitman. The film would become a mainstay of the midnight movie circuit (along with “the Rocky Horror Picture Show”) throughout the 1980's, and would also lead to a hit album which would peak at number 12 on the Billboard 200 chart. The movie mirrors a comic book, in that it strings together a number of shorter vignettes into an entire animated movie. The shorts are loosely held together by the frame of the Loc Nar, an orb that is the ultimate evil.Filled with terrific rock tracks, the soundtrack would become mired with legal issues, causing the CD to not be released until 1995. If you wanted to hear it before that, you needed to buy the LP.We're only giving you a taste of this album, folks. You really should download and listen to it in its entirety. Friend of the show Andy Burt stands in for Bruce in this one way ticket to midnight. Heavy Metal (Takin' a Ride) by Don FelderThis is the title track by once and future Eagles alumnus Don Felder. Fellow Eagles alumni Don Henley and Timothy B. Schmit also contribute backing vocals. The track would be the only Felder solo effort to chart, appearing at number 43. The music is associated with the film episode entitled B-17. Veteran of the Psychic Wars by Blue Oyster CultPenned by Eric Bloom and British author Michael Moorcock, this song appears in the story entitled Harry Canyon. John Candy voices the Sergeant in this segment. The song itself reflects a futuristic soldier exhibiting PTSD. Heavy Metal by Sammy Hagar“Headbangers in leather!” This song was written for the movie. “It's a one-way ticket to midnight! Cal it - Heavy Metal.” This iconic track is played in the segment called So Beautiful & So Dangerous. The Mob Rules by Black SabbathThe short entitled Taarna contains this track. Ronnie James Dio is the front man for this iteration of Black Sabbath. "If you listen to fools, the mob rules." This is the concluding vignette from the film.“Reach Out” by Cheap TrickWayne doubles up with his out-of-order staff pick, from the Heavy Metal Soundtrack. This track also takes place in the Taarna vignette. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK“Bad Moon Rising” by Credence Clearwater Revival"An American Werewolf in London" was on the big screen at this time, with some amazing special effects in this day. CCR contributed this song as the theme of the film. STAFF PICKS:“Gemini Dream” by The Moody BluesBrian's staff pick comes from a synthesizer heavy hit from prog rock superstars The Moody Blues. It hit number 12 on the charts, and comes from their album "Long Distance Voyager." Justin Hayward and John Lodge co-wrote this song. “Really Wanna Know You” by Gary WrightRob brings us another synth-heavy hit from the artist best known for "Dreamweaver." Wright worked closely with ex-Beatle George Harrison, and developed an affinity for eastern religion which permeates his music.“Hold on Tight” by E.L.O.Guest Andy finishes off our staff picks with this somewhat Rockabilly boogie number 2 charting track from the Electric Light Orchestra. It is off their sci-fi themed album “Time.” At the time, it was the most expensive video produced. Interestingly, it only hit number 24 in France despite the fact that it has french lyrics in the song. COMEDY/INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:“Birdy Song” by The TweetsBruce gets blamed for this comedy song choice to finish off an otherwise awesome podcast.

It's January and we are working to wrap up the next strategic plan. In doing so, one of the first things we evaluate is whether or not the mission and philosophy of the school continue to reflect who we are. After all, a strong mission and philosophy is the roadmap to a successful organization. Marijo Foster, retired Head of the Lower School and current board member, is my guest this month along with several TLS students from across all divisions. Marijo and I take a trip down the mission and philosophy lane and discuss the value of courage-building and how it is woven into the DNA of The Lexington School. I want to thank the students who contributed such words of wisdom to the podcast this month, and as always, here are some resources for those who want to dig a bit deeper as referenced in the podcast. What Fresh Hell: Laughing in the Face of Motherhood | Parenting Tips From Funny Moms
It’s easy for most parents to explain what’s wrong with how our kids speak to us: the snark, sarcasm, and eye-rolling are all things we could use a lot less of. But could the way we talk to our kids use a little fine-tuning as well? Dr. Wendy Mogel’s latest book, Voice Lessons for Parents: What to Say, How to Say It, and When To Listen, is just out in paperback. In this episode, Dr. Wendy Mogel tells us how to bridge the ever-more-complicated communication gap between parents and children, no matter what age our kids are. Over the last two years we've quoted Dr. Mogel more than any other parenting expert, and no surprise- this interview is full of "aha moments" and great ideas. You can read and download the full transcript here. And if you still need a little convincing that we should be focusing on the faults with our own parental communication, rather than the shortcomings of our children’s techniques, consider this quote from another classic of parenting advice, How to Talk So Kids Will Listen and Listen So Kids Will Talk: "Rather than blaming your kids for all your parenting grief, you can improve communication with them by making a few changes to the way you speak to them and set the tone of a situation. Listening, sharing feelings, and respecting your kids will make your job as a parent far easier.” Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

At school our sons keep it together. At home, flushing the toilet is well beyond their capability. This leads to a litany of “hurry up, put that down, stop doing that, start doing this” from their mothers. But are we too hard on our boys? We had an “aha moment” after reading this question posed by parenting expert Wendy Mogel: What percentage of your communication with your son consists of nagging, reminding, chastising or yelling? We’re going to respectfully decline to answer that question, as is our Fifth Amendment right. But we love Mogel’s solution: Talk to them like dogs. Really. Read the whole article; it’s a real perspective-changer. Mogel suggests that as our children’s lives become more intense and more structured, with ever-increasing homework when they finally get home, our boys are losing their chances to run and bark and chew on shoes (metaphorically). And that that’s leading to all sorts of issues. In this episode we discuss: how studies have proven that we treat infant daughters and sons differently- even before they can speak how to fight against the parenting norms of what David Lancy calls “WEIRD societies” (Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, Democratic) why the key to our sons’ happiness can often be found in the garage how to be interested (really interested) in what our sons are interested in. Even if it’s Fortnite.
