Un requin, un dragon, un rhinocéros, un être humain, aujourd'hui on parle de la personne qui veut démanteler tout un système : Nimona ! We can't wait to see you there.  This week, Ellie and Leigh discuss the 2023 animated Netflix film Nimona based on the graphic novel by ND Stevenson (who you may recognize as the creator of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power!). The story follows Nimona, possibly the most nonbinary shapeshifter character ever made, as they team up with Ballister, an aspiring knight from a humble background who is set up and accused of murdering the Queen. Nimona is pretty disappointed that Ballister is not actually a villain mastermind, but decides to be his sidekick anyway in an attempt to help him clear his name. It's all fun and shapeshifting sharks until Ballister starts to realize that his boyfriend Goldenloin really does not believe he is innocent and cannot see Nimona as anything more than a ‘monster'. Overwhelmed by the extent of the Director's deception and the loss of everything he has ever known in his life including his relationship, Ballister turns on Nimona triggering flashbacks of being betrayed long, long ago. Things become intense and dark very quickly from here on, but honestly we get it. Everyone with any ounce of power in town would rather kill and destroy innocent lives than change or remotely challenge their worldview. They see Nimona as a monster simply because they are different and everyone grows up being taught to 'kill first, ask questions never'. We do ultimately get a happy ending, but not before being absolutely stabbed in the heart at least 12 times with the feels. We are kicking off my second year of Pride Month Specific coverage in the month of June with a new guest on the show today, Theo Parish. Theo is a UK based nonbinary illustrator and author with an amazing new autobiographical graphic novel called Homebody from Harper Alley. Homebody is a compelling depiction of Theo's own experience of self discovery as a nonbinary person using an honest and heartfelt storytelling approach. It's out in stores now so make sure to pick yourself up a copy. From the publisher In their comics debut, Theo Parish masterfully weaves an intimate and defiantly hopeful memoir about the journey one nonbinary person takes to find a home within themself. Combining traditional comics with organic journal-like interludes, Theo takes us through their experiences with the hundred arbitrary and unspoken gender binary rules of high school, from harrowing haircuts and finally the right haircut to the intersection of gender identity and sexuality—and through tiny everyday moments that all led up to Theo finding the term “nonbinary,” which finally struck a chord.  A whole spectrum of people will be drawn to Theo's storytelling, from trans or questioning teens and adults, to folks who devoured Gender Queer by Maia Kobabe or The Fire Never Goes Out by ND Stevenson, to any person looking to dive a little deeper into the way gender can shape identity. Throughout the book, Theo's crystal-clear voice reminds the reader that it's okay not to know, it's okay to change your mind, and it's okay to take your time finding your way home. Our episode sponsors Transphoria Kickstarter Make sure to check out the Kickstarter campaign for Transphoria, a new new 90 page graphic novel that collects 19 new short storeis about trans and non-binary experiences of gender euphoria.      This week a super special guest and we keep our free flowing vulgarity to a minimum... try to anyway. Sorta.     A chance encounter leads a high school girl to an abandoned part of town, where she discovers a strange door in the middle of the remains of a spa. Next thing she knows, supernatural cats are running away from possessed chairs and a giant worm threatens everything. Makoto Shinkai's latest film about connection, loneliness, and mourning the lost places... Suzume (original title- Suzume no Tojimari, literal- Suzume's Locking Up).    Prior to the founding of Seabrook, those seeking to settle there fought off Werewolves for control of  a powerful mystical stone. The same stone that would be the strange source of energy for Seabrook Power that brought about Zombies. Now, after zombies have finally gotten a measure of equality, the powers that be decide to demolish Seabrook Power, the heart of Zombie culture, and Werewolves return to town seeking what was stolen from them. In the panic that follows, anti-monster laws are re-established. Can cheerleader Addison earn the place of captain as her bigot pandering cousin aims for higher office? Can Zed finally go to Prawn? Will Seabrook finally learn the lessons from the first film and welcome the Werewolves with open arms of equality, love, and kinship? Can the Werewolves do it like the... Zombies 2.     16 years after adventurer archeologist Lord Richard Croft disappeared, his daughter Lara has taken up the legacy and is without question the best in the world. Elsewhere, Manfred Powell and the Illuminati are desperately searching for a key to unite two halves of a mystical artifact before a once every 5000 year celestial alignment occurs. If you had any doubt, the key is definitely in the missing father's possessions and Lara will be immediately drawn into the shadowy shenanigans as soon as she finds it. Will Lara save the world? Obviously. Will baby Bond ever learn how to do a decent American accent? No, it's been 23 years and he is still terrible at it. Will there ever be a truly great adventure game adaptation?  Based on the ridiculously popular and long running video game series- Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.     In the thousand years since the Institute of Elite Knights began protecting the kingdom, following the teachings of the legendary hero Glorith, there has never been a commoner brought into the knighthood. All of that is about to change with Ballister Boldheart being the shining hope for the future... or he would be if he wasn't the fall guy in a plot to maintain the status quo by murdering the queen. Instead Ballister loses an arm and finds himself on the run with no one to turn to and no way to clear his name. Enter a mischievous shapeshifter who has faced persecution for her powers and knows all too well the pain of being rejected by everything and everyone. Declaring herself his sidekick, the duo set off to find the truth and maybe cause a little trouble for the powers that be along the way. A current Oscar contender that started production at Fox with their animation powerhouse Blue Sky, continuing for a couple years under Disney's hesitant eye, and finally being finished by Annapurna as their first animated feature. Based on the webcomic and graphic novel by ND Stevenson- Nimona.     All that and did I mention that there's a super special guest this week? Join us, won't you?   Episode 349- All Killa No Filla

Based on ND Stevenson's graphic novel, Nimona started life with Blue Sky Studios, and when Blue Sky was acquired by Disney in its purchase of 20th Century Fox, originally Nimona's production continued. When Disney officially cancelled Nimona, it came as no surprise to the team working on the movie. While officially the reasons for cancellation were financial, rumours swirled that Disney didn't like the LGBTQ themes, and opposed a same-sex kiss. But Nimona, and the crew behind the movie, refused to give up, and thanks to Annapurna Pictures and Netflix, Nimona was reborn. Nimona is more than a character. Nimona is the story of the making of this movie. Nimona is the scrappy underdog who refuses to back down from a fight. Nimona refuses to let a corporate entity subdue her and control her. Nimona might fall down, but Nimona will get back up again, and she will prove all her doubters wrong. And now Nimona is an Oscar nominated movie... take that, Disney.I would love to hear your thoughts on Nimona !CONTACT.... Skwigly.com presents Animation One-To-Ones featuring Ryan Gaur in conversation with ND Stevenson, discussing the Netflix feature film adaptation of his Eisner-winning graphic novel 'Nimona' Released on Netflix earlier this year, the world of 'Nimona' began with Stevenson's National Book Award-nominated and New York Times best-selling graphic novel that tells the story of the titular teen shapeshifter Nimona and her adventures as sidekick to wronged knight Ballister Boldheart. The film adaptation is directed by Nick Bruno and Troy Quane based on a screenplay by Robert L. Baird and Lloyd Taylor. Alongside being known for the much-loved comic series 'Lumberjanes', which picked up multiple Eisner awards, ND Stevenson initially introduced Nimona to the world as a webcomic in the early 2010s, which would ultimately see itself published and snag an Eisner of its own, among other accolades. His career in animation has included writing work on Disney's 'Wander Over Yonder' and showrunning the acclaimed 2018 reboot 'She-Re and the Princesses of Power', while ongoing attempts to translate the world of Nimona to a feature film were stymied by delays and cancellations before finding a home on Netflix with production house Annapurna Pictures. Interview conducted by Ryan Gaur Produced, edited and presented by Ben Mitchell

Screen Cares hosts, Sarah & Jennie, received a listener question for this week's episode: "My children care about inclusivity and equity but express that they aren't sure if their individual efforts matter, and express that it's hard to always keep up the 'good fight' against hatred. Is there a film that I could show my children that could demonstrate how important it is to be an active ally?"This was a challenging question but we've got the perfect film! And while the PG-rated film, Nimona (2023), based on ND Stevenson's graphic novel, is a fantastic screening choice for kids, it also is wildly entertaining and inspiring enough for humans of all ages. Nimona demonstrates the immense value of acknowledging and celebrating human differences and the value of being brave enough to be a true friend and ally.Screen Shares Rating: Family Screen and Little ScreenScreen SparksThink about an issue of identity that feels uncomfortable for you. Discomfort often comes from fear, rather than blind hatred. So, ask yourself this: What are you afraid of? Why are you uncomfortable with elements of someone else's identity that don't impact you?How do your relationships with individuals impact your ability to have compassion? Think about a time when you or someone you love has suffered. How can you generalize your feelings of compassion towards your loved one to someone not known to you, who is also suffering? There have been several recent examples of public backlash for inclusion of depictions of same-sex relationships or affection. There are also lots of examples of suggestive heterosexual content in media marketed to children that receive much less backlash. Movie description to follow! Theme Song by Man With Roses When Ballister Boldheart (Riz Ahmed), a knight in a futuristic medieval world, is framed for a crime he didn't commit, the only one who can help him prove his innocence is Nimona (Chloë Grace Moretz), a mischievous teen with a taste for mayhem -- who also happens to be a shapeshifting creature Ballister has been trained to destroy. But with the entire kingdom out to get him, Nimona's the best (or technically the only) sidekick Ballister can hope for. And as the lines between heroes, villains, and monsters start to blur, the two of them set out to wreak serious havoc -- for Ballister to clear his name once and for all, and for Nimona to... just wreak serious havoc.

From cartoonist ND Stevenson, the mind behind She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, we get Nimona, a gorgeously animated sci-fantasy film that's risen from its ashes after almost being axed by Disney a few years ago. Ballister and Nimona give excellent performances and together they tell a rich and genuine story centering around duty, purpose, and the struggles that real-life LGBTQ+ individuals face in today's world, in ways that a few of us have never seen before! That isn't to say that Marcus enjoyed every aspect of this movie, but we talk about whether of that is justified, too. Content warning: SPOILERS, strong language.

Last but certainly not least of our Nimona interviews is Eugene Lee Yang who chats about early representation (shout out to the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers), casting against type, and queer love stories. More about Nimona When Ballister Boldheart, a knight in a futuristic medieval world, is framed for a crime he didn't commit, the only one who can help him prove his innocence is Nimona, a mischievous teen with a taste for mayhem — who also happens to be a shapeshifting creature Ballister has been trained to destroy. But with the entire kingdom out to get him, Nimona's the best (or technically the only) sidekick Ballister can hope for. And as the lines between heroes, villains, and monsters start to blur, the two of them set out to wreak serious havoc — for Ballister to clear his name once and for all, and for Nimona to…just wreak serious havoc.    Directed by Nick Bruno and Troy Quane, NIMONA is an epic tale about finding friendship in the most surprising situations and accepting yourself and others for who they are. Drink it: 1 fl oz simple syrup 3/4 fl oz spiced rum 3/4 fl oz light rum 1/2 fl oz Blue Curacao 1/2 fl oz lime juice 3 drops (or more -- feel free to go crazy) grenadine Fill cocktail shaker with ice. Add all ingredients but grenadine and shake like a Polaroid picture for 10-15 seconds. Strain cocktail over ice in glass. Add drops of grenadine. Do NOT add Swedish Fish as a garnish.   Read it: The title character in "Nimona," by ND Stevenson, is a shapeshifter who wants to work for the evil(?) Ballister Blackheart. He wants to destroy the Institution, which rules their land, but he must go through his former friend Ambrosius Goldenloin. Blackheart has a plan, but Nimona add her own special ingredient: chaos.   The webcomic-turned-graphic novel won an Eisner Award, as well as a Cybils Award and a Cartoonist Studio Prize. We discuss the character of Charlotte Grote, the teen detective, and how her methods compare to other crime-solvers we've encountered. We love the visual art style and how it feels animated, get slightly confused by some of the plotlines, and wonder about the specific alternate reality of this world where everyone knows famous teen detectives. We also talk about the medium of comic books and how the storytelling is different, the uncertain nature of issue runs, and how we're talking about a very visual medium on a very auditory podcast. Katy cares about our social media, Carrie gets jealous of a blazer, Maddy gasped while reading, and Mack had to Google British slang. We also discuss the impermanence of our consumerism-driven world, confirm we don't feel bad when corporations are stolen from, debate what exactly constitutes an 18-bird roast, and learn what not to do when waking up in a hospital. Listen to hear about grocery store crushes, getting trapped in a skate bowl, childhood comic drawings, and a great Halloween witch impression. Hannah and Laura recorded at night instead of their usual afternoon recording and things went off the rails a bit.  Laura had to get out a lot of feelings about Agatha Christie (please don't unfollow her), and read a thriller that she really enjoyed. Hannah is still on her theme of watching TV shows about old, rich people who like to stir up drama and walk around in heavy ballgowns. We talk about the men of Towers of Midnight and have many thoughts about it, so many that we even forget about some characters for a hot minute. We think some of our thoughts make sense, but we were tired so cut us some slack. Hannah also has started A Memory of Light and reveals a hilarious spoiler about the audiobook.Media Mentions: The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan and Brandon SandersonThe Wheel of Time series---Amazon Prime VideoDeath on the Nile---HuluDeath on the Nile by Agatha ChristieMurder on the Orient Express by Agatha ChristieMurder on the Orient Express---HuluBlank Check podcastAgatha Christie's worksLumberJanes Volumes 2-4 by ND Stevenson, Shannon Waters, Brooke A AllenVerity by Colleen HooverStoryDarlings podcastJane Austen's worksThe Gilded Age---HBOmaxNorth and South miniseries---Amazon Prime VideoFilthy Animals by Brandon TaylorReal Life by Brandon TaylorHope and Glory by Jendella BensonStarstruck---HBOmaxPriory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon@ronniereadsregularlyFairly Odd Parents---NetflixHow The Grinch Stole Christmas---NetflixArrested Development---NetflixBridgerton---Netflix
