Send us a textAlright our kid? We finally review Deadpool and Wolverine in detail this week, as Hutch has managed to get himself to the cinema and watch it at last.Meanwhile, Steff has already moved on and been to see Alien Romulus, so we get the lowdown on that, and hear why you should probably take a spare pair of pants with you...A slower news week for Star Wars this time, but Hutch tells us why Disney are missing a trick with The Acolyte, and why they should employ him in their marketing department. In 2nd Chance Cinema Club, we review that groundbreaking 90's sci-fi flick starring Keanu Reeves. You know the one, where mankind has become a slave to technology and a rag tag group of underdogs fight the system? Final clue, it's based on works by William Gibson. Yes that's right, it's The Ma.... Johnny Mnemonic. Sorry.Tune in next week where a special guest helps us review The Star Wars Outlaw game. We're going back to the days when the geeks inherited the earth...specifically, the bands that were influenced by the monumental commercial and artistic triumph that was Weezer's 1994 self titled album (or, as it's affectionately known, The Blue Album). That's the subject of the new oral history and accompanying 11-track compilation album Generation Blue, out now from Big Stir Records and Spyderpop Records. Compiled and edited by this week's Third Lad, S.W. Lauden, Generation Blue is a fascinating celebration of the '90s Hollywood scene that included bands like Ozma, Nerf Herder, Baby Lemonade, Chopper One, and more. S.W. Lauden (aka Steve Coulter) was not only an active participant in the Geek Rock and Power Pop scenes, drumming for a series of LA bands like Ridel High, Tsar and The Brothers Steve, but is also accomplished writer. He is the editor of the essay collections Go All The Way: A Literary Appreciation of Power Pop and Forbidden Beat: Perspectives on Punk Drumming. His power pop-themed crime fiction novellas include That'll Be The Day: A Power Pop Heist and Good Girls Don't. He is also the author of the Greg Salem punk rock PI trilogy, starting with Bad Citizen Corporation. Find more of Steve's music writing on Substack at Remember The Lightning, including his semi-annual print/ebook Guitar Pop Journals. Generation Blue is also available as on Kindle: Generation Blue: An Oral History of The Hollywood Geek Rock Scene in the 1990s & 2000s - Kindle edition by Lauden, S.W., Koch, Karl, Fisher, Justin. "Once grunge, pop punk, and alternative rock went mainstream in the early ‘90s, local music burst into vibrant micro-scenes that stretched from Santa Monica to East LA, the Valley to the South Bay, and beyond. Among them was a Hollywood Geek Rock contingent" that included bands like Weezer, Nerf Herder, That Dog, and more... and their influences are still felt today. Some have even been Geekscape guests! Joining us on Geekscape are two people who were there to see it happen: writer/rocker S.W. Lauden (Ridel High) and Jason Cropper (Chopper One, Weezer) to talk about the "geek" rock scene that changed the face of music as documented in the new oral history book and album 'Generation Blue'. I'm joined by TV writer Eric Ernst, the self-professed "biggest Ridel High fan" I know! Pick up a copy of 'Generation Blue' here! Writer/musician S.W. Lauden is this episode's guest to talk about a limited-edition vinyl LP compilation and oral history book called Generation Blue. The album and book explore the Hollywood Geek Rock scene of the '90s and early 2000s, featuring key bands Nerf Herder, The Rentals, Ozma, Baby Lemonade, Psoma, and Weezer who released their triple-platinum Blue Album 30 years ago this spring. Previewed by the hit indie single “Where The Hell Is She,” a lost Geek Rock nugget by the band Shufflepuck, the album features eleven rare or exclusive vintage tracks while the book tells the story of the scene in the words of those who were there—including Lauden who played drums for the band Ridel High. The paranormal comedy podcast where we probe the dancing plague. All through history and most famously in Strasbourg, a market town in the Holy Roman Empire during 1518, dancing mania, has struck. The dancing plague has afflicted and possibly been responsible for the death of up to 15 people per day, effecting up to 400 people in total on one occasion over the course of a few months. But what caused it? Some accounts tie the Strasbourg event all back to one person, Frau aka Mrs Troffea. Frau, had the moves and not just like Jagger oh no no for Frau, Electric Slided in to a Time Warp as she showed the town how to Dougie. It turns out that dance is infectious and the town would need to come up with some quite creative ways to stop that plague from spreading. What this doesn't tell us however is what struck Frau? Was this a saintly curse? A demonic curse? Something altogether more biological in nature? Whatever it was, this plague could hit you so hard that you'd end up in Heavvvvennnnn. We think you'd be in Heavvvveeennnnnnnn. All that and more on this week's file. As we discussed the bustling market town you of course will have heard the Market theme from 1998's The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, followed by part of the End Credits theme, which were composed by Hero of Sound Kōji Kondō for Nintendo. Also composed by Kōji was the Fortune Telling House theme from 1991-1992's The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. We finished the episode as is often usual with the ‘Staff Roll' aka credits theme from 1990-1992's Super Mario World on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, also composed by Kōji Kondō. Between those tunes, you may have noticed the theme from The WB and UPN's 1997-2003 Buffy the Vampire Slayer courtesy of Nerf Herder. Legendary.

TV writer, editor and musician Allie Goertz introduces Al to an album that's been central to her life for the past year — The Downward Spiral by Nine Inch Nails. Allie talks about how she first heard the album, why it's been important to her and how she covered several of the tracks on her upcoming album, NIN, Peeled Back. She also talks about the Nerf Herder song that bears her name.Correction: Al incorrectly stated that "Closer" was the album's first single. “March of the Pigs” was actually the lead single, though “Closer” was the first track Al had heard on the radio. It's ridiculously easy to find and follow Allie online (and you should)!Twitter, Instagram and YouTube: @alliegoertzBandcamp: https://alliegoertz.bandcamp.com/Al is on Twitter at @almelchiorBB, and this show has accounts on Twitter and Instagram at @youmealbum. Linus of Hollywood (Linus Dotson) is an American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and record producer. The stage name comes from his early days in Los Angeles, where he frequently wore striped shirts similar to the Peanuts character Linus van Pelt. At age 21, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in music. In 1995 Dotson started his professional career with the band Size 14, named after his shoe size. After releasing their self-titled album in 1997, the band broke up in 1998. After Size 14, Linus began playing with and producing other artists and recording his work. In 1999, Linus released his first solo album, Your Favorite Record, on his label, Franklin Castle Recordings. He performed nearly everything on the album, both instrumentally and vocally. He has since released four more albums: Let Yourself Be Happy (2001), Triangle (2006), Attractive Singles (2008), and Reheat & Serve (2008). The single for "A Girl That I Like" was released in 2011. Dotson released his fourth solo album in 2014, titled Something Good. Linus has toured with guitar hero Paul Gilbert extensively, as well as working with artists like: Allstar Weekend, 5 Seconds of Summer, Mr. Big, Bowling for Soup, Cheap Trick, The Charlatans, Kim Fox, Jennifer Lopez, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Lil' Kim, Nerf Herder, Ol' Dirty Bastard, Roger Joseph Manning, Jr. (of Jellyfish), Puff Daddy, and The Smashing Pumpkins. Dotson co-wrote the theme song for Nickelodeon's School of Rock and also wrote music for the show. His solo music has been included in the TV shows Weeds, Californication, and The New Normal. He also appeared as an actor in the season finale episode of The New Normal and performed in an episode of TNT's Rizzoli & Isles. Yea, he's done a lot. With the recent firing of Joe Maddon from the Los Angeles Angels, the Gents evaluate what the legendary baseball manager has accomplished in the MLB (1:50). The firing of the Halos' skipper did not carry shock value to EstoBro, TV, and special guest He-Who-Most-Not-Be-Named after his first major league firing. However, between his tenure for the Tampa Bay Rays and Chicago Cubs, they wonder if his managing style still has what it takes? After the cold open, the Gents continue to go after the Star Wars fanbase (11:45), and the echoing issues that the toxic fanbase has for the latest installment of the franchise with the Obi-Wan Kenobi series on Disney+. The focus on how diverse and explored the franchise has been explored in the Gents' lifetime is everything they need to combat the "gatekeeping fans," and why they need to be sidelined. The shifted frustration is focused on the latest issue of Rolling Stone magazine ranking the greatest hip hop albums of all time, only to criticize a list that shows a great deal of favoritism to relevance over cultural impact (32:20). Both TV and EstoBro want a more balanced take from He-Who-Most-Not-Be-Named because he works in the music industry before the collective dismisses this list for being poorly ranked. On a lighter note, Tampa's very own hockey team has a chance to win their third Stanley Cup in a row as they look to face the Colorado Avalanche in the Stanley Cup (46:15). The Gents make their predictions on what will it take for the ChampaBay team to win once more before turning their focus on the NBA Finals. In the major spotlight for the guest of the show, EstoBro interviews He-Who-Most-Not-Be-Named about his upcoming tour that he has been waiting for since before the pandemic broke out (60:50). With the show finally getting on the road, the guest shares the excitement he will be experiencing this summer in professional sports team stadiums. With music and sports meeting at one place on the podcast, it was something that EstoBro was more than happy to discuss on the show.
