12 Strength Training Mistakes in Menopause Robbing Your Results

Most commonly the challenge is gaining lean muscle. Doing all the things but can't seem to gain muscle? Then tune in and go through this like a check list of 12 strength training mistakes in menopause that could be the reason. It just takes one. But if there are multiple, it's compounded and in this case, not interest but penalty! Join us at Metabolism Makeover 2.0 to support your journey avoiding the 12 strength training mistakes in menopause. Overworking Small Muscle Groups [00:02:20] You need fewer of these small muscle group-focused exercises in your routine if you prioritize the major muscles like chest (pectoralis) and back (trapezius and Latissimus Dorsi). If the secondary (biceps and triceps) muscles are going to get a workout most of the time, these will rob you of time and energy that is better spent on major muscles if you aren't getting in the adequate volume there. Skipping the Warmup [00:06:40] Nearly a decade ago, I began sharing the fact that if you skip the warmup, you also miss an opportunity to increase total energy expenditure during a workout. It's not only about injury prevention. There's an increased blood circulation, improved energy expenditure, mobility and you can work closer to your capacity. If fitness and longevity are truly goals, “exercising” is not the same as working at your capacity and safely, sanely raising the roof on your fitness level so that age doesn't automatically result in slowing down or gaining weight. Not Resting Between Sets Long Enough Before [00:13:10] Rapidly moving from one exercise to the next, was yesterday. The “metabolic conditioning workouts” are a nice anomaly, a change in pace. Rest between sets of strength training. Reach complete muscle fatigue or within 2 reps of it. If you do HIIT, separate the sessions so you get the best benefit from it and from strength. If you are not getting stronger, not increasing muscle, and these are your goals (in order, perhaps to improve body fat % ultimately), it's a “how” you're doing it problem. Plan Your Routine to Avoid 12 Strength Training Mistakes in Menopause No Organized Plan [00:17:30] You either default to using what's available at the gym or doing the same exercises in the same sequence every time. If you're not careful you won't change the stimulus (by changing the sequence and sets/rep combination) and may also not be getting enough sets per muscle group in each week. It doesn't mean that all sets for a muscle group must be all the same exercise. A super set of 6 different exercises for the triceps works. The next workout you may just do 3 and you're still covered… if you planned it that way. Not Sleeping Enough or Not Changing the Workout When You Don't Sleep [00:20:50] The sleep you get will determine the benefit you get from exercise. If you don't prioritize, your workouts will suffer too. You're also at risk for injury, not only because your body isn't fully doing the repair job or releasing testosterone and growth hormone in deep cycles of sleep as it should, but because coordination suffers. Treating Soreness or Worn Out an Indication of “Good Workout” [00:22:40] When you work muscles, it's normal to feel sore, even if you're extremely fit. Some muscles like quads and glutes are used to a lot of activity and tend to get sore less often. But there are two genes associated with soreness and you may either be predisposed to be sore or not. It's not a good indication of whether you worked hard enough. If you reached muscle fatigue or came close, you gave the muscle enough stimulus. The first sign of poor recovery was soreness after workouts, the second was reduced performance during workouts. 12 Strength Training Mistakes in Menopause to Avoid and Nurture Your Body Dependence on Supplements and Negating Balanced Whole Food Meals. [00:27:00] If you're all too willing to jump to EAAs, or BCAAs but won't eat regular meals that result in satiety, chances are your lack of micro and macronutrients will catch up with you. “Food first”, then allow supplements to take you the rest of the way. I don't like to “count” calories on a regular basis but a snapshot is very helpful for checking in. Often for knowing when you're eating too little. Taking Too Much Advice (or Too Little From Too Many People) [00:30:20] It often takes even gurus a while to come around. You have to love Vonda Wright and Mary Haver sharing their own menopause journeys. We need more women like them. They're open about not knowing what they didn't know about menopause, as physicians and women. You have at your fingertips access to women who learned the hard way, so you don't have to. Just don't jump in the middle. You need an onramp. Ignoring Nutrition Needs. [00:32:30] The talk is “calorie deficit.” Yet, 80% of women in our community under-eat for their mere existence (resting metabolic rate) and then try to put their foot on the accelerator for exercise causing a bigger caloric deficit. Then they stay there for years, under-fed and under-fueled (processed food, diet food), the metabolism will come to a halt, along, potentially with adrenal and thyroid function. Figure your calorie needs. Use an app to track your actual intake for 3-5 days. 12 Strength Training Mistakes in Menopause That Hinder Your Progress Thinking Small, Skinny, or Numbers That Don't Matter Instead of That Do [00:36:20] Your size and your weight on the scale do not tell the story of your fitness and health. Though they might hint at your likelihood of sarcopenia and osteoporosis, fall and fracture risk. When women focus on weight or size they sacrifice muscle. When they lose muscle, they lose strength, longevity and independence. A woman who has her ideal weight or size is constantly thinking about it and a step away from a fall or fracture. A fracture that results in bedrest, weakness and loss of more muscle. The beginning of the end. Those falls are not devastating just because of the breaks, but because of brain bleeds or other internal damage. Too Heavy to Start [00:38:20] The first 6-8 weeks, and up to 12, of a resistance training program, the benefits are due to the neural connection. That isn't rushed by going heavy. But loads too great for your ligaments, tendons and joints or muscles can cause weakness, undue soreness, and a weak foundation leading to injury. We, in the fitness industry, need to be more careful. We have sometimes lost our way in regard to where to START, and how and at what pace to PROGRESS. You Add Something But Don't Remove Something Else [00:40:30] I've experienced this temptation myself. When I started training for triathlons at 40, I was compelled to figure out how to run even while I was adding biking or swimming to my schedule. I soon realized I was sabotaging the quality of every workout and just putting those “junk miles.” A woman will lose muscle because of the added stress, inability to recover. That's an extreme example, but if you're adding and never subtracting/replacing, you're probably going to experience similar results. In this episode of The Nichole Banks Podcast, we dive into The Real Pain of Not Changing. I talk about how staying in the same place—emotionally, mentally, or even physically—may feel safe, but it leads to stagnation and missed opportunities for growth. Resisting change often comes from fear of the unknown, and the real pain is not the change itself, but the discomfort of remaining stuck in unhealthy patterns. The freedom that comes with change is empowering and can be achieved through small, consistent shifts rather than drastic overhauls. I also share practical tips for embracing change, such as starting with awareness, setting manageable intentions, celebrating small wins, and seeking support from others. Change may be tough, but it's worth it for the life and growth it brings. Lastly, I encourage listeners to take the first steps toward transformation by exploring my courses and coaching offerings for more support.Hey, gorgeous! A Word With You

Once you've tasted Vermont maple syrup, all the store brands taste like goo! So my ears picked up one night when NBC Nightly News started talking about the troubles that Vermont maple farmers were having that year. They focused on one farmer who lived on a farm where they've been mapling for eight generations! This farmer had known that the maple trees were ready to be tapped for their valuable sap during the first week of March. But recent weather changes had suddenly thrown that predictable harvest schedule into total confusion. The previous year, he and his son nearly lost a third of their normal maple sap because it was either too soon or too late to capture it. For all those eight generations, this family had used one time-honored method of tapping their maple trees; a spout on the tree and a bucket underneath. But there's this new technology, I guess, that enables a farmer to know when the sap is ready and to capture it in that brief window. But tubes and vacuums seemed pretty foreign to a man who'd known one way that worked all his life and for generations. But after all they lost that previous year, his son finally convinced him. His son's comment was, "It takes some coercion to get him to go along with new ideas, for sure." But the veteran farmer did it. The NBC News reporter identified why. He would do anything to keep the farm for his son. In the reporter's words, "Even if it means doing what he hates the most - changing his old ways." I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "The Cost of Not Changing." When the method you know, and the method you're comfortable with is costing you the harvest, you change or you lose the harvest. How can that lesson be lost on those of us who have joined Jesus in what He came to earth to do - seeking and saving the lost? Jesus actually called the work of bringing people to Him harvest. And honestly, there's a harvest many believers and many ministries may be losing because we hate to change. While North American Christians have built this massive Christian subculture, we've been losing our culture. And the lost people around us have changed dramatically. They don't know God's rules; they don't know God's Book; they don't know the religious words we use; they don't ever plan to go to any of our religious meetings. But in many cases, we're deciding what we'll do to reach them based on what we're comfortable doing; what we're used to. But since when does a rescuer decide what he's going to do based on what's comfortable for him? He does whatever he has to do to save that dying person, and it's seldom comfortable! Listen to God's greatest harvester, the Apostle Paul, in 1 Corinthians 9:22, our word for today from the Word of God. He says, "I have become all things to all men that by all possible means I might save some." Just before this, he's told us that when he's with the Jews, he comes in a Jewish package; when he's with the Gentiles, he's as Gentile as God will allow him to be; when he's with those who need an uncomplicated presentation of Christ, he becomes what they need. All the time making sure he is never "ashamed of the Gospel of Christ" (Romans 1:16) as he said. And Paul followed a Savior who constantly changed the package and the presentation to break through to changing audiences. But Paul and His Savior never changed the product! They never compromised their message! Like that Vermont farmer, we're harvesting the same product, but we've got to be willing to change the way we get it as much as the harvest requires. So are you willing to change so we can bring in the harvest of lost lives? Will you, for example, learn to tell them about Jesus in their words like a missionary does in a foreign culture, and not just speak our Christianese? Are you willing to use the kind of program, the kind of music, the kind of package that speaks the language of the person you're trying to reach? Are you willing to reach them in locations where they're comfortable and maybe you're not? Are you willing to introduce the Gospel by starting with needs they care about? We might be talking change here; it's what we hate to do the most. But the cost of not changing is much higher than the cost of changing. Because that might be souls lost forever, maybe because we wouldn't change.

This week, we take a look back at the incredible albums of 1978. In a year when Uncle Gregg was just playing with his squeezebox and Brett was gettin' down to Sesame Street Fever, our Third Lad Jim Basnight was right in the thick of the Seattle music scene. 1978 was the year Basnight's power pop combo The Moberlys formed, straddling the line between melodic Beatlesque songcraft and tightly wound, hormonally charged garage rock. From those nascent days (which have been compiled on the recent Early Years compilation) to his latest solo album, 2019's aptly titled Not Changing, Jim Basnight has been delighting pop music fans for well over 40 years.   In this insightful, fun-filled episode, we talk about early musical influences, opening for Ramones, The Police and Greg Kihn, the New York punk scene, Seattle grunge, drunken nights, hard rock, bubblegum and blues roots, and a whole lot more. Plus, we play both sides of the latest single off of Early Years, "Live In The Sun" and "Bebe I'm Gonna Leave You."   It's the show that caused Jim to exclaim, "I didn't realize what kind of complete nerds you guys are!"   It's just what you needed!   #musicpodcast #musicpodcasts #podnation #1stwave #classicalternative #70smusic #1978music #1978albums #punkrock #newwave #powerpop #classicrock

RockerMike and Rob Presents: Jim Basnight Jim Basnight started recording solo and with the Moberlys in the late 70's and led a pre-grunge original rock and roll scene in his native Seattle, before relocating to NYC in 1980. He's been working live and releasing records ever since.   Armed in NY with his first album "The Moberlys" (on Seattle's Safety First Label), he received critical acclaim in NY from among others Trouser Press, New York Rocker and Rolling Stone Record Guide. He reformed the Moberlys and worked with various east coast musicians and producers before returning to Seattle in 1984 where he found a more fertile ground to carve out a rock and roll living.   In 1985 Basnight moved to LA, CA with a third version of the Moberlys on the heels of his second album "Sexteen" on the Lolita label (France). In LA the Moberlys recorded with REM's Peter Buck for EMI-America Records and several other noted producers.   After working as a sports website journalist with the Seattle Times, Yahoo and ESPN from 2005-11 to support a new family while still gigging the region, Basnight became a managing partner in a research project on blues icon "Sonny Boy Williamson" (Alex Miller) in 2012.   Jim released the CD album "Introducing Jim Basnight" in 2012 on Precedent and continued his "Sonny Boy" research and shows. In 2019 Basnight released "Not Changing," which received a strong response from indie radio, specialty shows and widely heard podcasts, as well as notable reviews from around the globe.   Jim's new release is "Jokers, Idols and Misfits" on Precedent (November 2020 CD) and on Dangerhouse Skylab (August 2021 LP) and has expanded on the momentum of "Not Changing." Since the release of “Jokers, Idols and Misfits,” Basnight has released, for download and streaming only; “Seattle-NY-LA” (April 2021), “Makin' Bacon” (August 2021) and “Pop Top” (March 2022), all three brand new to online platforms.   Jim has appeared with acts such as the Ramones, the Police, the Romantics, the Band and Billy Idol and has shared stages with original members of Blondie, Guns and Roses, Heart, New York Dolls, Paul Revere and the Raiders, Janes Addiction, REM, Nirvana and Pearl Jam.   In late 2020 Jim placed all 138 of his published compositions and co-written songs with Wixen Music in LA, CA. Basnight is represented by the European 4W1 Agency. Jim's biography on Miller is scheduled to be published in 2022. Basnight was nominated in January 2022, in the Best Male Artist Category for a 2021 Radio-WIGWAM Online Music Award. In April 2022, Jim's track “Stop The Words” was chosen “Coolest Song In The World,” by Little Steven's Underground Garage (Sirius XM). Udi is also insightful and pragmatic, constantly making connections and critiques of the space with a sharp eye and a relentless desire to call things out when he disagrees. He blurs a lot of lines, and you always have to be on your toes when Udi's around. There's value in having members in the community who never give the benefit of the doubt and act as a philosophical razor for the space. In today's episode of This Little Light of Mine I'm going to be speaking with Jonathan Brower who knows a little bit about NOT CHANGING (as in not changing your sexual orientation, based on what someone else believes SHOULD be true for your life). As I introduced on the last episode of TLLOM, Jonathan has been through conversion therapy programs four times… yes… FOUR TIMES!  There has been lots in the news recently about conversation therapy. And Jonathan Brower was intimately involved in the very recent ban of conversion therapy in the city of Calgary Alberta.  As they do with systemic racism, gender inequality & oppression churches around the world continue to do an excellent job masquerading their practices of hate, discrimination and exclusion for queer people so that they APPEAR as offering message of HOPE and CHANGE coming from the ‘one and only true word of God' or as compassionate offer of help, out of true love & concern '… spoiler alert… let's call it what it is. HATE. I found Jonathan's story fascinating and it helped me see the politics behind conversation therapy and how real and dangerous this practice still is today in both Canada and the United States. At a time when we can’t go ten minutes without hearing someone declare how they’re going to turn everything around and make 2017 their best year yet, it’s a radical notion to propose that we simply continue on the course we’re on. We live in a culture that’s obsessed with instant results. New Years comes around […] The post I’m Not Changing a Damn Thing in 2017 appeared first on Boodaism.

Dialed in For Success, Episode 2: The Secret Life of Goals You have to follow your calling. Don’t let fear stop you. Review of last week’s Podcast I used to hate goal setting because the way it was taught to me was boring and I heard it again and again.   Standard Corpoarte Goal Setting: S.M.A.R.T. Goals Specific, Measurable, Attainable/Achievable, Realistic, Timebound The Law of Familiarity: Anything you are exposed to repeatedly, you tend to take for granted. This Week’s Podcast Seth Godin interview really opened my eyes to goal setting secrets. Goals are a tool for keeping an agreement with yourself. They’re like a lever. They pry you into action. You don’t want to break a promise with yourself. It’s easier to achieve the goal than break the promise to yourself. The reason people don’t set goals is that once they write down the goal, they have to take responsibility for their lives and that scares them to death. Tracy Trost of  the Successful Life Mindset podcast calls it pre-quitting. “I’m going to fail so why try?” When you set your goals, the critics will come out. They have a vested interest in you NOT CHANGING Achieving goals has a snowball effect. Start small and use each victory as a steping stone to the next one.
