On this third installment of Febwhaleary we take a look at perhaps the largest acrobats in the sea: the humpback whale. Known for their extraordinary feats of agility, as well as a complex series of songs that they sing to one another, the humpbacks were truly one of the most graceful creatures ever to inhabit the oceans. Unfortunately, the humpbacks would be hunted to extinction in the early 21st century…or so we thought. To understand the fate of the humpbacks, one must look not into the future…but into the past. The year 1986; using a stolen Klingon bird of prey, a group of disgraced Starfleet officers from the 23rd century would travel backwards through time to save, not only the humpbacks, but indeed all of humanity from extinction. The following is a dramatization of those events that we like to call Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.I'm your host, Dave, and joining me as we lay down a series of colorful metaphors are fellow cinephiles and life long members of the Cetacean Institute in Sausalito, Mike, Ryan, and Jackie.Topics of discussion in this episode include the Enterprise crew's laissez faire attitude towards time travel; we analyze where the alien space probe falls on the Bristol Stool Scale; and finally, we break down the age old fallacy of the odd numbered Trek's being shit.Be sure to rate, review and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. You can also Like Us on Facebook, Follow Us on Instagram, or shoot us an email at apocalypsevideopod@gmail.comAnd with the whales safely transported to the 23rd century, this leg of our voyage is now over. When Febwhaleary concludes, we'll be taking a look at one of the rarest whale species on the planet…the Comeback Whale, as we watch Darren Aronofsky's 2022 Oscar Winner, The Whale.

Robert Duvall Passed Away at 95, and it Seems too Soon This week on the podcast, Brian and Darryl honor the legendary Robert Duvall, break down the latest Warner Bros. Discovery and Skydance merger talks, and review the penultimate episode of HBO's A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Corporate power plays and Westerosi lances collide. Episode Index Intro: 0:07 Robert Duvall: 3:51 Warner Bros/Skydance: 9:07 A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: 23:43 Robert Duvall January 5, 1931 – February 15, 2026 Robert Duvall was one of the defining American actors of the modern era. A founding member of the American Film Theatre movement and a classmate of Dustin Hoffman and Gene Hackman at the Neighborhood Playhouse, Duvall built a career on discipline, restraint, and volcanic presence. Career Highlights: Tom Hagen in The Godfather (1972) and The Godfather Part II (1974) – The calm consigliere in a world of chaos. Controlled, intellectual menace. Lt. Colonel Bill Kilgore in Apocalypse Now (1979) – “I love the smell of napalm in the morning.” One of cinema's most iconic performances. Oscar Winner for Tender Mercies (1983) – Best Actor for his deeply human portrayal of a broken country singer. The Great Santini (1979) – A towering, volatile performance that earned him an Academy Award nomination. Lonesome Dove (1989) – Cemented his legacy in the Western genre. Later career standouts: The Apostle (which he also wrote and directed), Open Range, The Judge. Duvall's strength was subtle authority. He never chased flash. He built characters from the inside out. In an industry obsessed with volume, he mastered quiet. Hollywood didn't just lose a legend. It lost a craftsman. https://variety.com/2026/film/news/paramount-skydance-response-warner-bros-discovery-deal-talks-1236665757/ Warner Bros./Skydance Will They/Won’t They Warner Bros. Discovery has reportedly reopened acquisition discussions with Skydance and Paramount, injecting fresh volatility into an already chaotic media landscape. Paramount previously floated a $30 per share offer, potentially rising to $31. Meanwhile, shareholder votes and competing interests continue to complicate the picture. This is consolidation round… what, 47? The real question is what this means for IP control, franchise strategy, and the long-term survival of mid-budget filmmaking. Every merger promises “synergy.” Historically, synergy often translates to layoffs, canceled projects, and fewer creative risks. We break down what this could mean for DC Studios, HBO prestige content, and the streaming wars at large. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (HBO Max) Season 1, Episode 5 (Penultimate Episode) Episode Title: “In the Name of the Mother” Directed by: Owen Harris Written by: Hiram Martinez & Ti Mikkel and Ira Parker Summary: The trial of seven begins. In the first charge, Aerion knocks Dunk off his horse. In a series of flashbacks to Dunk’s childhood, he and his friend Rafe scavenge from a battlefield. They return to Flea Bottom in King’s Landing and pickpocket from Alester, a City Watchman. Dunk and Rafe attempt to buy passage to the Free Cities in Essos, but cannot afford it. Alester corners them and takes their money. Rafe steals Alester’s dagger, but he notices and slits her throat. Arlan emerges from a tavern and kills Alester, saving Dunk, who then follows Arlan on his travels. In the present, Dunk duels Aerion on foot until both men collapse from injury. After Dunk falls unconscious, Aerion declares him dead. Egg begs Dunk to get up, and the crowd chants for Dunk as he stands. Dunk and Aerion resume their duel until Dunk gets the upper hand. Aerion yields and withdraws his accusation. In the aftermath, Beesbury and Hardyng are confirmed as killed. Dunk pledges fealty to Baelor. Raymun and Pate help Baelor remove his helmet, which Maekar struck with his mace during the trial, revealing a fatal wound. Baelor collapses from his injury and dies in Dunk’s arms. The jousting sequences are shot with brutal realism. Armor feels heavy. Impacts feel dangerous. The episode underscores a central thesis of Martin's work: nobility is aspirational, not guaranteed. Key Cast: Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan the Tall Dexter Sol Ansell as Prince Aegon “Egg” Targaryen Finn Bennett as Aerion Targaryen Bertie Carvel as Baelor Targaryen Sam Spruell as Maekar Targaryen Production Notes: The series distinguishes itself from House of the Dragon by focusing on intimate political storytelling rather than large-scale spectacle. The penultimate episode prioritizes character psychology, legacy, and the myth of knighthood over spectacle-driven chaos. Bleek Gilliam (Denzel Washington) is a hot-shot young trumpet player leading his own jazz quintet who loves the music and has a way with the ladies but can't figure out how to reconcile those two things.  He's also dating two women (Joie Lee, Cynda Williams) at the same time and can't commit to either of them.  He has also a manager (Spike Lee) who's a gambling addict and a saxophonist band-mate (Wesley Snipes) who has developed a rivalry with him.  So where does he go from here?  In this sprawling romantic musical drama, we follow his complicated story and hear a lot of great music along the way!  This was Oscar-Winner director Spike Lee's immediate follow-up to Do the Right Thing and even though it was a pretty unconventional choice to come right after such a seminal film, its reputation has only grown over the past thirty-five years thanks to several sterling peformances from its leads along with a stacked supporting cast including Giancarlo Esposito, Bill Nunn, John Turturro, NIcholas Turturro, Ruben Blades, Samuel L. Leaving Las Vegas (1995) is Nicolas Cage at his most raw and devastating and he delivers a performance that won him an Oscar and became one of the bleakest love stories ever put on film. Cage plays Ben Sanderson, a man who moves to Las Vegas to drink himself to death, where he meets Elisabeth Shue in a career-defining role as a sex worker who chooses to love him anyway. In this episode, Richard Lewis, MonteCristo, and Thorin break down Cage's Oscar-winning performance, Elisabeth Shue's shocking transformation, and the film's unflinching depiction of addiction, despair, and fleeting connection. They also discuss Roger Ebert's surprising praise, the film's cultural impact, and why Leaving Las Vegas still resonates nearly 30 years later.

It's been a big time for Formula 1 these past few days, we've had the launch of Brad Pitt's long-awaited F1 movie coming straight after a triple header (that we managed to miss, but RIP the Groundhog) and then heading to Austria for what promised to be a shoot-out at RedBull's home track.Well it didn't exacly pan out well for the team that gives you wiiings after all that (also Max didn't turn up to the movie premier in NYC either), but once again we saw a dominant performance from McLaren, who really have made THE car of 2025, leaving everyone else scabbling to pick up what they can from the race. This week on the podcast there's some of your thoughts on the F1 movie, with a couple of spoilers (but there's a timer so you can skip through them) and the ups and downs of an Austrian Grand Prix that started with a fire and kind of went on from there.Sorry for the radio silence again, between covid, flu (thought it was meant to be Summer right now?) and various festivals and gigs we've either all not been able to be in the same place or speak for what seems like months! His mother Eunice Paiva was now alone, raising five children. For decades she fought for answers from the state. She became a prominent lawyer and human rights defender and helped to set up Brazil's Truth Commission. But when Eunice started to develop Alzheimer's disease it fell to Marcelo, by now a successful author, to tell the family's story. That story has been made into an Oscar-winning film - I'm Still Here. The podcast explores needed narrative, behavioral, and system shifts for recreating human life in balance with all life on Earth. With expert guests from wide-ranging disciplines, we examine the forces underlying overshoot: from patriarchal pronatalism that is fueling overpopulation, to growth-biased economic systems that lead to consumerism and social injustice, to the dominant worldview of human supremacy that subjugates animals and nature. Our vision of shrinking toward abundance inspires us to seek pathways of transformation that go beyond technological fixes toward a new humanity that honors our interconnectedness with all beings.  Hosted by Nandita Bajaj and Alan Ware.
