Costume designer Tim Chappel on the chance discovery at a train station that led him into a life of designing for films and the stage.Tim can't remember all the places he lived, growing up on Army bases around the country, and overseas. His one constant as a kid was nature. He'd look for stick insects to pin into his collection and draw endless terrestrial orchids. Tim was ready to focus his life on botany when he found a copy of French Vogue at Flinders Street Station in Melbourne. He was entranced by the glamour of the clothes and felt an instant connection to the tailoring.Tim was creating shorts for bartenders and costumes for drag queens at Sydney's Albury Hotel when he got a new job offer. That's when he signed up to design the costumes for an Australian film called Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, work which would later win him an Oscar.More informationThere is a sequel in the works for Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. Former CME floor trader and RCM co-founder Bobby “Yogi” Schwartz joins Jeff to close out our Chicago month and walks through a wild career arc: from generational hog pit roots to dominating the Nasdaq futures pit during the dot-com bubble, then building prop firms, arbing minis vs. big contracts, and eventually stepping into Hollywood film finance before returning to launch RCM. Bobby shares vivid floor stories: badges, hand signals, full-contact fights, and multi-million-dollar errors, while explaining how open outcry actually worked, why Chicago produced so many elite prop traders, and how the e‑mini revolution rewired the futures landscape. He breaks down building and backing 100+ traders, deploying early “gray box” tech, and structuring option and index arb trades that bridged futures, ETFs, and cash baskets. The conversation then shifts to what RCM does today: multi-FCM clearing, outsourced trading, ETF and mutual fund infrastructure, ag and global trade finance, and navigating the explosion of new DCMs, prediction markets, and perps. Along the way, Bobby drops Hollywood war stories, Chicago steakhouse lore, and a candid look at where derivatives trading is headed next.Chapters:00:00-01:12=Intro01:13-10:06=From Yogi's Jacket to a Generational Life on the CME Floor10:07–20:20 = Inside the Nasdaq Pit: Dot‑Com Vol, E‑Mini Arbs, and Human Algos20:21–31:36 = From Floor to Screens: Building Prop Firms and Hollywood Film Arbs31:37–41:42 = Hollywood Trades: Indie Film, Oscar Winners, and Risk Like a Trader41:43–58:06 = Building RCM: Clearing, Outsourced Trading, ETFs, Ag, and China58:07–01:10:47 = Chicago War Stories: Pit Fights, Steakhouse Nights, and Trader Royalty01:10:48-01:17:51 =  Life After the Pit: Chicago NightsHow Chicago Became the World's Options, Vol, and Derivatives Capital (with Cboe's Rob Hocking & Mandy Xu)Inside $2B of Chicago Real Estate: Tommy Choi on Housing, Migration, and Millennialsrcmalternatives.comDon't forget to subscribe toThe Derivative, follow us on Twitter at@rcmAlts andsign-up for our blog digest.Disclaimer: This podcast is provided for informational purposes only and should not be relied upon as legal, business, or tax advice. Julian, Madeline, and Emilio welcome back writer, performer, and Julian's longtime friend Michaela Brady to discuss the iconic meditation on the creative process that is "Adaptation" (2002), written by Charlie Kaufman, directed by Spike Jonze, and starring Nicolas Cage, Meryl Streep, and Chris Cooper in an Oscar-winning role. As the "View-nanimous" entry in a new episode cycle focusing on Twins and Doppelgangers in film, the group members all re-watch this exceptionally meta movie to discuss its relationship to reality, both in the literary process and its specific characters, as well as how its fusion of sincerity and irony produces an inimitable outcome, and how having a dual performance at the center actualizes the film's messages. And while the main four participants generally praise "Adaptation," they also consider a hot take from friend of the pod Idris Goodwin, for whom the distinct qualities of this film landed a little differently compared to many others.   Follow Michaela Brady on IG @leatrice_write or @jillnjeff11, and check out her writing and blog at leatrice-author.com.Follow Idris Goodwin on IG at idrisgoodwin, and learn more about his latest book "King of the Neuro Verse"  as well as his plays, music, published works, and varied artistic endeavors at http://www.idrisgoodwin.com/If you enjoy our podcast, please rate and review us on your podcast platform of choice. Sam Davis on Making Oscar-Nominated Short ‘The Singers' Without a Script, Casting Viral Buskers, and Shooting on Film On Get Reelisms podcast episode 187, filmmakers Adam Chase Rani and Christine Chen interview Los Angeles–based filmmaker Sam Davis, who is campaigning his live-action short The Singers, nominated for an Academy Award and streaming on Netflix. Davis traces the project back 3–3.5 years to reading a George Saunders breakdown of a Russian short story, then adapting it into a modern bar-set film starring first-time actors found on social media, which took about 18 months to cast due to scam concerns and trust-building. He describes a documentary-influenced, unscripted approach with long improvised takes, constant sound recording, layered audio, and shooting on 35mm film for intentionality, while noting the costs of film and travel. The four-day shoot faced setbacks, including a lead dropping out two days prior. Davis discusses song selection, costume strategy, collaborating with a small crew, balancing documentary and narrative work, and developing future projects, including a long-term feature documentary.   About Christine W Chen: Christine W. Chen is a Taiwanese American filmmaker, Academy member (Short Films Branch), and versatile producer, director, and writer known for bold, character-driven storytelling. Through her production company, Moth to Flame, she has created award-winning short films, features, and branded content—including Erzulie, a feminist swamp thriller that had a limited theatrical run and now streams on major platforms. In addition to her directorial work, Christine is a seasoned DGA 1st Assistant Director and co-author of Get Reelisms and ABCs of Filmmaking, as well as the co-host of the Get Reelisms Podcast. Join The Op as he fan-girls over Brian's 40+ year career in movie makeup and FX, lending his wizardry to amazing movie icons like The Demogorgon, The Terminator, The Thing, and many more... even Stuart Little :)Together, they land on Mersey Island, just off the Essex coast, northeast of London, connected to the mainland by a single strip of tarmac called the Strood — a causeway so low that twice a day the tide rolls in and swallows it whole. No bridge, no tunnel, no alternate route. It is the kind of tight, physically separated community where people know each other's cars, each other's dogs, each other's business, which is precisely why, when a quiet and well-liked local man was arrested in connection with a double murder, somewhere between thirty and forty of his neighbors immediately stepped forward to testify on his behalf. The lead investigator said she had never seen a number like that before in her career — not once — and that the gap between what the community believed about this man and what had actually been happening inside one house on the island is what the entire case runs on.The Op walks through all of it — the island, the family, the architecture of the deception, the fake personas and the voice recordings, the poisoning that lasted two years, the investigation that nearly pointed the wrong way, and the moment it didn't. He is joined, for the first time on a case episode, by a guest: two-time Oscar-winning effects artist Brian Wade, who rode every twist of this one in real time and made for the most memorable co-chair the Operator could have asked for on episode 200.Hugs ❤️----------------------------------------CREDITS:Narration – The OperatorResearch & writing – The OperatorCreative direction – The OperatorProduction – The OperatorIntro Music – The Operator...did we mention The Operator?

Josh, Garrett, and David sit down to digest the massive wins for Sinners and One Battle After Another. They unpack Ryan Coogler's masterful genre-blending, the jaw-dropping musical sequences in Sinners, and why waiting for the vampires to actually show up is the smartest thing the movie did. Then, they shift gears to PTA's chaotic, cross-country epic starring a buffoonish Leonardo DiCaprio, debating the film's wild pacing, stacked cast, and underlying themes.
