Throughout history, we've assigned roles for harbingers of doom to various creatures and people. If a black cat crosses your path, it brings bad luck with it. If you see your own doppelganger, you're dangerously close to an untimely end. If the grim reaper makes an appearance, your time is up. And on and on it goes. In small towns in and around the United States and across the world, creatures lurking in the woods, sounds that can be heard at night, are all signs that something terrible is headed your way. These are what are known as “harbingers of doom” – and there are some horrifying events that have been linked to them over the years. Mental Institutions, psychiatric hospitals, lunatic asylums… whatever you want to call them, they can do good work if given the right resources and staff, helping patients to live through or possibly even overcome mental health crises. But even in the more well-funded locations, nightmares still occur according to both staff and patients. And even when those institutions are abandoned and left to rot, many refuse to release the tormented souls who have somehow found themselves entrapped there in the afterlife. We'll look at haunted asylums, we'll hear some horrifying true stories from both patients and workers about what happens inside asylums that are still in operation, and we'll learn about the horrifying reality of mental asylums in the 19th century acting almost like amusement parks for paying visitors. Today we answer the questions:- How much do I eat? (With or without tracking) - What do I drink?- When do I stop eating?- Can I drink alcohol?And, you'll leave with several action steps to get started on 2024 and beyond. Partial Transcript: today we are back in the new years revolution series, we are revolutionizing the way you do new years, and we're making sure that you never have to have a generic new year's resolution that ends in February every single year. And we're back at it the next ever, ever again.They're really two questions. When someone comes and they say, you know, I want to lose weight or whatever. First one is what do I eat? And the second one is how much do I eat? Today, we are going to focus on the, how much, and it's going to steer you in the right direction anyway, but we will focus on what you are eating as well. That is just as important. And we will go into that as the series goes on.  Today talking about how much you eat. We're going to split it up into two possibilities, essentially. If you are tracking your food and if you are not tracking your food, and if you have no idea what that means, you are not tracking your food and that's okay.  Tracking your food is something that I actually used to start nearly every single client on, like, unless they told me that it really stresses them out or it really just doesn't work for them. Or the technology thing is just like way too much. I started almost everyone there and I don't necessarily think that that's wrong. I think I'm now just more experienced and able to see that it's just not going to be a long-term solution for a lot of people. So I basically try to mash them together the best I can in the beginning to make sure I really understand what they're eating and we can make improvements. However. The older I've gotten. You have to remember. So when I started taking clients, we started the gym. I was still a senior in college. I was an idiot  I was 20, 21. Yeah. 21. So this is not. Uh, wisdom filled human being that we're talking about when I started this and as I've gotten older and life has gotten more stressful and more real. And we went through the pandemic with the gym and I've just had times where I really understood. Fitness being on the back burner and like, couldn't even imagine trying to fit a workout into my day. Like I get it and I don't think I fully got it before. But for the past couple of years, I found that most people transition out of tracking towards the end and we make, and us making sure that that transition goes smoothly is really kind of the end of their journey with me. And then I graduate them, quote, unquote. (The Axeman's Jazz) *** The investigation of an apparent suicide in 1953 led to an unbelievable theory… not only had the victim used LSD years earlier, but it was quite possible it was forced upon him by the Central Intelligence Agency. (The CIA and LSD) *** You don't often hear of people being struck and killed by lightning – at least not nowadays. But pick up a paper from the early 1900s and you'd think people were doing it as a hobby. Partial Transcript: Welcome, I am your host, Tara Jabbari. Who was she? Podcast will focus on the stories of women throughout history that were active in the Baha'i Faith. This season is about Hazel Scott, a talented musician and activist. She had evolved in her faith. Having been introduced to the Baha'i Faith by her good friend and famous jazz artist, Dizzy Gillespie, she was interested in learning more. She was particularly intrigued by “progressive revelation.” This is the belief that Manifestations of God represent stages in the spiritual evolution of civilization. These Manifestations include Abraham, Moses, Krishna, Buddha, Zoroaster, Christ and Muhammad. Or as she explained, “Whenever man has been ready to absorb more knowledge, God has revealed it.” Baha'u'llah is the Manifestation of the Baha'i Faith.Hazel fought nonstop for what was right, she achieved many firsts and her talent was truly one of a kind. In one of the last interviews she ever did, she was asked what is the most important part in her life. Hazel replied, “The important part? Partial Transcript: After Hazel had married Congressman, Adam Clayton Powell Jr. her music career changed from late-night jazz to a more conservative, classical approach which proved to be very successful. Hazel said goodbye to 1945 and to her mother Alma but 1946 brought new life. On July 17th, Hazel gave birth to a son, Adam Clayton Powell The Third, or affectionately called, Skipper. She said, “My greatest thrill was the first time I saw Skipper.” Adam and Hazel were both very busy but they made sure they would be home on weekends. During the week, a housekeeper cared for their son. Skipper, later on, said, “They decided to try to have as normal a life as possible. (Dad) would be in Washington during the week at least January through May, and (Mom) would be traveling a lot but on Saturday and Sunday, we were going to be a family. And so wherever they were, the deal was they would have to get back to New York by Friday night.”The Powells were famous, being a celebrated and high-profile black power couple. However, behind closed doors, it was not easy, Hazel admitted, “We fought bitterly but loved each other deeply.” She confessed that she did think of ending her marriage in the first year. The constant pressure of everyday life, their bustling careers, and their public persona along with the death of her mother and a new baby were all so much for Hazel. She tried to repress her emotions which would eventually end with almost dire consequences. Along with all of her responsibilities and attention, she still dealt with constant racism. I think you have provided objective, fact-based views on what the dangers are, and the risks and potentially even human extinction - an existential threat which has been mentioned by many more than just the three of you, experts who know first hand the potential for harm. But these fears need to be addressed, and I think can be addressed through many of the suggestions that you are making to us and others as well. I've come to the conclusion that we need some kind of regulatory agency, but not just a reactive body. actually investing proactively in research, so that we develop countermeasures against the kind of autonomous, out-of-control scenarios that are potential dangers: an artificial intelligence device that is in effect programmed to resist any turning off, a decision by AI to begin nuclear reaction to a nonexistent attack. The White House certainly has recognized the urgency with a historic meeting of the seven major companies which made eight profoundly significant commitments. but it's only a start. The urgency here demands action. The future is not science fiction or fantasy - it's not even the future, it's here and now. And a number of you have put the timeline at 2 years before we see some of the biological most severe dangers. It may be shorter because the kinds of pace of development is not only stunningly fast, it is also accelerated at a stunning pace, because of the quantity of chips, the speed of chips, the effectiveness of algorithms. It is an inexorable flow of development. Building on our previous hearing, I think there are core standards that we are building bipartisan consensus around. And I welcome hearing from many others on these potential rules: Establishing a licensing regime for companies that are engaged in high-risk AI development; A testing and auditing regimen by objective 3rd parties or by preferably the new entity that we will establish; Imposing legal limits on certain uses related to elections. related to...

So I just wanted to share some dog training point of view type thoughts I’ve been having about the current state of our COVID/quarantining/social distancing world, which I think is, overall, I think we’re coming out of the most difficult part of this period. At least I hope so. And it raises some interesting behavioral, I dunno, problems, questions, I guess, that I’ve been thinking about in terms of dog training. Firstly, I’ve been thinking about masks and why people are still wearing masks. I actually was listening to an episode of All of It with Alison Stewart which I listened to pretty frequently on WNYC on this topic. And I almost called in, and then I hesitated because I always… I always wonder if people might roll their eyes, if I say, Hey, I’m a dog trainer, and this is what I think in dog training terms. But if you’re tuning into my podcast, I guess you do want to hear a dog trainer thinks about this situation in terms of human behavior! Anyway, in the segment with Alison people were saying some things that I hadn’t even thought of about why they continue wearing masks. Some were saying that it’s helped with their allergies. It’s helped them not get sick in general. Some have said that they enjoy the kind of anonymity it gives them on the street. Overall, I think most people are wearing masks if they are still wearing masks, because sort of like better safe than sorry. Easier to wear a mask than to deal with being potentially fatally sick because you did not wear a mask. And it’s relatively easy thing to do. It’s not a behavior that requires a massive amount of effort to engage in and it can keep others from harassing you on the street. Although, of course, that can go both ways. Some people are annoyed when people are around them wearing masks, and some people are annoyed when they’re not wearing masks. Overall. However, I think it’s a really good example of negative reinforcement at work. Negative reinforcement is negative not because it’s bad, but because it involves the removal of something. Well, I had been preparing for our January challenge and doing batch recordings for YouTube videos, podcasts, and then with the release of our new program, I was recording all the modules for that on top of all the other content that you see me doing on Facebook live and things like that. So it came out to about 35 hours a week of trainings, recordings, all of that. This strategy I'm going to share with you works every single time. So most people don't follow up. And this is going to set you free. This is going to allow you to make sure that you are able to follow up with confidence and get the results that you want in your business. Stay tuned. All right. So for this episode, we are going to talk about how to follow up with your prospects in a way that feels genuine, that feels authentic, and that you're not bothering them because let's be honest, we've all done it where we keep following up and we kind of get frantic around it. And then that's weird. Like, are they ignoring you or are they ghosting you? Or are they just busy? Right. So the thing I want you to know first off is that we actually are not great at follow up as an entrepreneur in general. Less than a third of leads are never followed up on. So a third of the people you talk to are never followed up on. Okay. So first off, you're probably not following up enough, but when you look at the way that we're going to go over right now, you can see why. You're going to start to be like, "Oh, that's how I follow up with people!". So it's going to give you more confidence and it's going to give you the direction you need to follow up, follow up appropriately. So you want to make sure you're following up for sure, but you need a reason to follow up. I call it Permission Marketing. Seth Godin wrote a really great book with that title. And it's something I've adopted for a very long time, since I've been on social media and it's allowed me to build my business to seven figures, it's allowed me to recruit double digits every month in my business without coal messaging or spamming anyone. So if that sounds good to you, you're going to want to implement the follow up method. So with the follow up method, we want a reason to follow up first off. So let's say you do chat with Susan and you're in your whole process.,you sent her the video. By the way, you never want to stop with the third party tool and the video and say, "did you watch the video? Did you watch the video?". No, we're just going to keep that train moving. Okay. So let's say we connect with Susan in a Facebook group. Susan wants to know more about how the heck are you making money on social media? Like she doesn't get it. Exactly what did I do to be able to recruit over 50 people in less than four months in my network marketing business and on top of that, getting to a million dollars in revenue this year with my brand? I mean, that's a lot of stuff going on, right? That's a lot of moving pieces and a big part of this, the last three months at the time of this recording, we've been in quarantine, right? With the economy taking a hit, people are concerned, there's a lot of fear, but my business has grown. So I think this is really going to help you if you're stuck, or if you are wondering, "what are people doing to recruit a lot of people?", let's talk about it. Okay. So the first thing I would tell you is when I really started picking up in my recruiting, where people started coming to me like last year alone, I recruited over a hundred people and I started thinking, "what is it about the way I'm building my business?". I'm not messaging people. I'm not cold messaging. I'm not doing the, you know, look at their posts for three days and then reach out. And there's nothing wrong with that, but I'm not doing that. So I was like, "okay, what is it?". Of course my marketing mind always wants to know. So what I did is I started looking back at conversations that I'd had with these people. And I saw that at some point in time, I had mentored them. So the first thing I would say to you is, are you mentoring? Are you pouring into people? Are you offering value? You know, and I think I am in a unique situation because I do have a personal brand. I've monetized my brand at 15 streams of income, now, that I don't need my network marketing business to grow, I don't need to recruit people to be able to take care of my family. Right. It kind of shifts the energy. So when I'm on social media, I'm offering value like this. I'm putting content out there and doing videos. I'm doing posts that are engaging, entertaining, connecting with my audience, sharing with them what's going on in my family. I do it because I know that my job is to make people feel better when they, when they connect with me. Right? So if they come to my profile on Facebook or Instagram or in my stories, I want to make their day better. I want them to be glad that they came to hang out with me for a second on social media. So the first thing I would say to you is how are you showing up on social media? Are you doing the you post once in a while and hoping people reach out, are you spamming people? Are you doing the stop, go, stop, go? I feel like we're finally getting some quality time together, 'cause we're always doing voice memo at like midnight. Yes. Yes. So I thought since we're going to chat about something, that's just something you're very passionate about and I'm always asking you questions around it. I thought it would be great if we brought our listeners into our conversations so they can learn while we're talking about this topic today. Kimberly Olson: So a lot of people may have never heard of you before or met you up until this point. So I would love for them to learn a little bit more about you. So to start, can you just share, bring them up to speed as far as your entrepreneurial journey, what got you into entrepreneurship? And tell us a little bit about that story. Nicole Chugg: Yes. So I started my career in the cosmetics industry, but I was always sort of wanting more. And I remember so many times when I was in my job, so to speak, I kept thinking "there's got to be more, I just want more for my family. I want to be able to stay at home with my babies. I want to travel. I just want flexibility and to not be living, pay to pay". And I remember back in the day, it's amazing how things show up when they're supposed to show up. My husband, who's in the Defense Force, came home and said, "Oh, by the way, we're moving to this country town". Nicole Chugg: I'm like, how on earth am I ever gonna carry on with a career in this country town? It was certainly not on my radar and it certainly didn't align with what I was visualizing for my life, but everything does happen for a reason. And it was the biggest gift I could have asked for. Because of that move, it allowed me to pursue my entrepreneurial journey and had so much success in our life for our family. And now we are living that exact life that I had envisioned for my family. Kimberly Olson: That is truly incredible! Just by asking the question, "is this it? I would like to have more for my family", and all of that. That's amazing. So how long have you been an entrepreneur? How long have you been doing that and what have you done with that? Nicole Chugg: Yeah, so for 10 years in social marketing. So I've been there for 10 years doing this and yeah, I'm in the top 1% and it's just truly been incredible, absolutely life changing. And it really has just opened so many doors. This is the thing when it comes to branding, just like a lot of people, what I did is I thought, you know, if I had a website sign up with a network marketing company, I had a website, maybe linked it to my blog, I would get orders, I'll get people joining and it doesn't work that way. And a lot of times people will think, you know, if I have a Facebook business page and I post my products on there, people will find it and they'll order. It also doesn't work that way. Facebook is pay to play. Facebook wants it to be where you're spending money on ads to get your content in front of people. So you want to get away from thinking you have to hide behind a brand or your company. What you want to start thinking is, I have to connect with my potential audience. I've got to build relationships with my followers so I can build up that know, like and trust factor. And when you do that, you will start to learn how to engage your audience. You're going to start to learn what those pain points are. You're going to start to learn how to build up the know, like, and trust factor. So what I want you to do is I want you to do, "What Would Kimberly Do? Then we zoom in to a group of seniors at the Alice Saunders building in Vancouver’s Hastings-Sunrise neighbourhood and how a proposed development might uproot their tight-knit community. These stories drive home that no model of housing can succeed without really listening to the residents themselves. This project was part of a mentorship and skills development program. It acquires signals from the real world, sends that information to the cloud through the Internet, and it provides some value to your customers. ”Okay, so before we introduce you to our guest, consider this: The IoT Market is infernally hot. In 2016, we had 6.4 billion connected ‘things’ in use worldwide, and Gartner research firm projects that number will nearly double to 11.2 billion in 2018, and then nearly doubling again to 20.4 billion IoT products in 2020. For context, this last number is about 2 and a half times the number of people on earth. “Let’s look at an example of IoT at work. Let’s say you’re an oyster farmer, and you need to keep your oysters under a certain temperature because harmful bacteria might grow if you don’t—which would result in people getting very sick after eating your product. If that happened, the FDA could shut your operation down. “This is where IoT products can help you. You can track water temperature with sensors. Those sensors can send that data to the cloud, where you can access it. The system will even send you an alert if the temperature ranges outside your chosen temperature criteria. You can use cameras that show when the oysters are harvested and how long the oysters are out of cold water before they’re put on ice. By using these sensors and cameras to record harvest date, time, location, and temperature at all stages of harvest, you have recorded evidence that you’ve properly handled the harvest. “So, for the purposes of today’s episode, let’s now switch to the other perspective—to the perspective of someone who wants to make and sell an IoT product. Imagine you and two of your friends recently launched an IoT startup—you’re able to secure funding to build your IoT product, and you’ve hired some team members to help you get your beta version off the ground. But you’re new to building products like this, and the rest of your team is also pretty new to it as well. So you decide to talk with someone who is an expert in the IoT space who can give you and your team pointers—and you’re lucky enough to find this man.” Daniel: “My name is Daniel Elizalde. I am the founder of Tech Product Management. My company focuses on providing training for companies building IoT products, specifically I focus on training product managers. I've been doing IoT really for over 18 years, before it was called IoT, and I worked in small companies and large companies, consulting, and UX agencies. Most of my career has been on the product side of things, anywhere from single contributor to head of product and most recently, I left the corporate world, and I founded Tech Product Management. I teach online. I have an online course for a certification program for IOT product managers. I also teach at Stanford continuing studies, and I do consulting and workshops for companies. “I started to get a lot of request for an online program. And so that's when I decided to build my online training, and it's actually a certification program where you take all the material, then you take a test, and you get a certification.”

And then we’ll pop over to New Zealand to explore how a disaster situation affected Christchurch and what people did about it.” Aaron: “I was a disaster relief volunteer in New Jersey during hurricanes Irma (Ginette: Here Aaron actually means Irene) and Sandy, and my area got very hard hit by Irma, and I started off as a relief volunteer and ended up directing a lot of those relief efforts for my church, and while I was there, I remember standing in very long lines, and a thousand of us would gather together at a field command center and spend an hour and a half waiting to get checked in, which is lightning speed for 1,000 people, but it's still an hour and a half. “And while everybody was waiting, they’d pull out their phones and would start playing Angry Birds, and the technologist in me would just scream inside, “I could have you all checked in with your work orders in 30 seconds, not an hour and a half!” “And I abhor inefficiency—to a fault—like it's almost a little bit of a sickness. I really ought to be better, but I really abhor inefficiency, and I hate it when people waste my time, and I hate wasting people's times, especially volunteers.
