Annie Duke is a World Series of Poker champion, having won more than $4 million in tournament poker. In 2004, she won the World Series of Poker bracelet and is the only woman to have won the World Series of Poker Tournament of Champions. In 2009, Annie was a contestant on Celebrity Apprentice, where she took 2nd and raised more than $700,000 for her chosen charity. She is the author of Thinking in Bets, a national bestseller, and Quit: The Power of Knowing When to Walk Away. Annie was awarded a National Science Foundation Fellowship to study Cognitive Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania, and she recently completed her PhD. She is also the co-founder of The Alliance for Decision Education, a non-profit whose mission is to improve lives by empowering students through decision skills education. In this episode, we discuss the following: Quitting isn't a bad thing. With whatever we're doing, don't be afraid to say, “I don't love it” or “I loved it, but I no longer do” or “I still love it, but I think there might be this other thing that I love more.” All decisions are probabilistic, so it's important to continually sample.Try a bunch of stuff, figure out what you like, and then keep trying a bunch of stuff. It's hard for us to leave paths without feeling like we've failed. Luckily for Annie, she was forced to try other things when she got sick during her PhD program. And then sampling poker led her to becoming a world champion. Then she realized she liked writing books, giving talks, and running a foundation. Just because something survives a fact check doesn't mean it's true…true in the sense that it's the right model of the facts. If the stock market drops 3,000 points in one day, people might say it's the largest drop in history. But that would only be true in terms of total points, not true in terms of percentage. Given that every decision we make is a forecast, the quality of our decisions are only as good as the way that we've modeled the information that is inputted into the forecast. Annie has developed two questions that are fantastic for modeling facts: “Out of how many?” and “In comparison to what?” By asking ourselves these two questions we will improve our models and make Annie happy. As a high school student, in the next few years, I'll make some major life decisions about where I'll go to college and whether I'll riddle myself with decades of student debt. How will I make the best decision? My guest today, Dr. Maria Konnikova, had a similar question about her own life. How do you assess a situation and decide the best option for yourself? And, if Fate pulls a fast one on you, how do you react accordingly? In search of answers to these questions, Dr. Konnikova, a journalist and Ph.D. in psychology, tackled the game that best simulates our constant decision-making in life. And what is that game? It might surprise you. It's poker. For her NYT bestselling 2020 book, The Biggest Bluff, Dr. Konnikova took a deep dive into poker and ended up becoming an international poker champion and winner of over $300,000 in tournament earnings. In this episode of Aiming for the Moon, we'll discuss what this taught her about decision-making and how we can apply these skills to our own lives.Topics -Why poker?Games of complete information vs games of incomplete information and how they simulate lifeLife skills gleaned from pokerThe process of decision-making vs the result of the decisionWhat is the biggest bluff? What books have had an impact on you? What advice do you have for teenagers?Dr. Maria Konnikova is the author of Mastermind and The Confidence Game. She is a regular contributing writer for The New Yorker, and has written for The Atlantic, The New York Times, Slate, The New Republic, The Paris Review, The Wall Street Journal, Salon, The Boston Globe, Scientific American, Wired, and Smithsonian, among many other publications. Her writing has won numerous awards, including the 2019 Excellence in Science Journalism Award from the Society of Personality and Social Psychology. While researching The Biggest Bluff, Maria became an international poker champion and the winner of over $300,000 in tournament earnings. Maria also hosts the podcast The Grift from Panoply Media and is currently a visiting fellow at NYU's School of Journalism. Her podcasting work earned her a National Magazine Award nomination in 2019. Maria graduated from Harvard University and received her Ph.D. in Psychology from Columbia University. The sunglasses are coming off. Pro poker player Danieal Negreanu is unapologetically transparent from his game strategy to his vegan diet. He’s won over $42 million in two decades of poker playing, and he’s not even close to folding. Daniel made the switch first to a vegetarian and eventually to a vegan diet in his early twenties when his casino lifestyle started to catch up with him. He claims the way he eats now gives him the focus and stamina to endure twelve to fourteen-hour games and multi-day tournaments. He also challenges others to shift their perspective about eating animals—why do we love dogs and eat cows? From psychology to poker strategy, Las Vegas eats to travel foods, this conversion is a delight. What we discuss in this episode: - The importance of making a gradual transition to plant-based - How he started playing poker at 16 years old - Fundamentals and strategy of poker - Changing perspectives around the “traditional” way of eating - What he eats to stay energized and alert during long games - GTFO It’s Vegan online market - HappyCow app - Melanie Joy’s book, Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows Connect with Switch4Good - YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQ2toqAmlQpwR1HDF_KKfGg - Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/Switch4Good/ - Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/switch4good/ - Twitter - https://twitter.com/Switch4GoodOrg - Website - https://switch4good.org/

My guest today is Annie Duke, who was previously one of the best poker players in the world and is now a renowned public speaker and best-selling author. If anyone has the perfect background to discuss decision-making, it’s Annie. She pursued a Ph.D. in psychology at UPenn before starting her poker career, and when she stepped away from poker in 2012, she was the leading money winner among women in the World Series of Poker. Our conversation today focuses on both her books, Thinking in Bets and How to Decide: Simple Tools for Making Better Choices. We discuss both causes of bad decisions and ways to make better ones. She explains the issue with analyzing decisions based on outcome (which she calls resulting) and uses real decisions made by Pete Carroll, Nick Saban, and Bill Belichick as examples. We also discuss best practices for group decision making from the standpoint of a coaching staff or front office when scouting or drafting a player. Being sick while finishing her graduate program at UPenn Favorite Quotes: “Whenever you do something that’s unusual, you’re risking idiot, and most people would prefer to risk bad luck than idiot. If I hand it off to Marshawn Lynch, my risk is people say I have bad luck. If I choose a pass play and it doesn’t work out, even if it’s the better decision, and it doesn’t work out, I’m risking idiot. People don’t want to risk that because that’s career risk.” “Here’s the interesting thing about Belichick: When you look at the early part of his career, he wasn’t doing those things on fourth down. He’s really famous for going for it on fourth down in places people don’t understand. Guess what? The first few years of his career, he wasn’t doing that. It wasn’t until he had a ring when his job wasn’t at risk anymore…that he started to make those fourth down calls.” “The goal of having a bunch of people to come in and give their perspectives is to inform everybody of the different ways you can model the data you have, the different ways that you can think about it and view it and the different perspectives you have. And then the person who can ultimately decide (like the GM) then is now the best informed to make a decision.” “This is step one: when you’re thinking about do you want to recruit a player, and you’re eliciting the opinions of those on the coaching staff, make sure they’re giving them to you independently and that they don’t know your opinion.” “The things that matter is not so much the things you agree on, but the differences of opinion. To be a good part of a team, it doesn’t mean that being on the same page means agreeing.”

Flipping 100 houses is less “risky” than flipping 1 house. The first time I heard this a few years ago, it blew my mind. But it’s 100% true. And it’s just one crazy takeaway from this 2-hour interview I held with Annie Duke.Annie is a World Series Poker champion with a Ph.D. in cognitive science. She’s an author, a decision strategist, and a consultant. And I only meant to spend 45 minutes talking with her.But the stuff she was sharing was just too good.We dug into questions like…How do you know if you’ve made a GOOD decision? (Spoiler alert… it has nothing to do with the OUTCOME of the decision…)What’s the CORRECT way to think about risk and probability? (This is HUGE for real estate investors…)How do you ACTUALLY learn from your mistakes? (Most of us are learning the WRONG lessons…)And those are just a few examples. You’re also going to learn…Why a lot of the things we think are mistakes actually aren’t, and a lot of things we think aren’t mistakes actually are...The “poker concept” that explains why appraisers hassle flippers on resale values…Why losing money on a deal messes us up mentally (and how to resolve it)…How to break out of analysis paralysis (by the end of this episode)…The 2 things that determine how your life turns out…Why it’s important to focus on the “set” rather than the “individual….”Why “winning or losing” is irrelevant to good decision making…And more. This episode will change HOW YOU THINK.And there's a HUGE surprise at the end... Annie is going to be SPEAKING AT FLIP HACKING LIVE! I can't believe I'm publishing the 100th Episode of this podcast that I started in the summer of 2017. My first guest ever was Ralph Acampora! I mean, how could it not be right? Since then I've had the privilege of interviewing Portfolio Managers, Traders, Analysts, Best Selling Authors and even a World Series of Poker Champion! People all over the world have approached me how much they've learned from listening to the podcasts. It's been an amazing experience for me all around. Since it's Episode 100, how can I not invite Ralph back on the show to talk markets? In this episode Ralph describes the recent trip that him and I took to India. We both had an awesome time and are blown away by the interest out there for Technical Analysis. It really is incredible. He thinks we're going to see breakouts in Gold and Silver soon but that's not necessarily bad for stocks. Both can rise together. I always enjoy my conversations with Ralph. He has great old stories about technicians that we're too young to remember or even know about. He's good with giving credit to some of his predecessors that probably don't get the recognition these days that they deserve. Louise Yamada for example gets a lot of credit for the phrase, "The bigger the base, the higher in space". But she'll tell you that she got that from her boss and mentor Alan Shaw. And Alan will tell you that he learned it from his boss. So I think it's important to remember the ones who came before us. I would argue that over 95% of what you see me do, say and talk about comes from something I learned from my colleagues and/or predecessors. I didn't make any of this stuff up. The credit goes to all of them and in most cases they have all been guests on this podcast. I want the world to be able to learn from the people that I learned from and continue to learn from every day. Ralph is a great example, obviously!

In a week where markets hit new all-time highs, Dan gets to the question everyone asks with each new record. “You all know where I'm gonna come down on this.” With this high-water mark, it's a good time to reflect on the principles of investing, from risk management, to value, to growth. Dan gets into the weeds on the literature of investor behavior – and the findings by DALBAR on individual investing performance, which while never changing year after year, are always shocking.

''Life is more like Poker than chess.'' - @annieduke What's going on guys? Back once again for a very special episode! We've been speaking to former world series of Poker champion Annie Duke. Annie's story is so fascinating. Originally Annie began her journey flourishing academically. Majoring in english and psychology, before pursuing a doctorate in cognitive linguistics. It all looked set for a nice life in academic circles... But everything changed for Annie, when she got sick and needed to find a way to make some money. This led her to poker. The combination of a cognitive psychology base, Annie's own characteristics and ''luck'' as Annie says, led her to become the 2004 World series of Poker champion. Annie's book is called 'Thinking in bets: Making Smarter Decisions when you don't have all the facts.' And I can testify and say it's a fantastic read. In today’s epic show, we interview World Series of Poker bracelet champion Annie Duke. Annie is a nationally sought-after speaker who combines her mastery of poker with a study of the cognitive sciences in a truly unique and brilliant way. In this show, you’ll have your mind blown by Annie’s insights regarding following conventional wisdom (even if it doesn’t make sense), focusing too much on the results (and not enough on the right choice), and accepting a level of uncertainty to gain a HUGE advantage over your competition. Annie’s theories on “thinking in bets” are designed to help others navigate a world where we can’t be certain of an outcome, but still come out on top over time. This is an absolute can’t-miss episode for those looking for strategies to overcome apprehension, fear, or uncertainty.
